The £6.2 million refurbishment of our Clifford Whitworth library was completed, bringing over 250 new individual and group study spaces and much more.

FEBRUARY 2016

Our New Adelphi building first opened its doors to students studying art, design, fashion, music performance and photography.

Our first cohort of degree apprenticeship students joined us, studying quantity surveying.

JULY 2016

Sir Walter Bodmer officially opened our £3 million Bodmer Lab, housed in our Cockcroft Building.

Our simulation suites opened. Designed to mirror hospital and counselling environments, they help to train the next generation of nurses, midwives and counsellors.

NOVEMBER 2017

This year marked the opening of our new Faith Centre on campus. The centre brings together space for group worship, private prayer, personal reflection, social activities, pastoral support and relaxation.

EARLY 2023

Our brand-new £65 million home for the School of Science, Engineering and Environment officially opens, providing a state-of-the-art collaborative workshop and laboratory space at the heart of Peel Park campus.

OCTOBER 2022

Salford rises 10 places to 88th in the influential The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023.

SEPTEMBER 2022

Salford climbs up five places to 89th in the Guardian University League 2023.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Over the coming years, Salford as a city will be undergoing a significant amount of change and our university is right at the heart of that journey. The Crescent Masterplan is an £800 million investment designed to transform the city.

The next steps of the Masterplan will see the arrival of a new Acoustics Lab and Business School added to our Peel Park campus and our vision for a more pedestrian-friendly campus come to life, with Salford Rise, a pedestrian bridge which will link our Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses.

JUNE 2022

The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results were released, confirming that 78% of research led at Salford was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

AUGUST 2022

The University received the prestigious White Ribbon accreditation after making a firm commitment to ending men’s violence and abuse against women.

EARLY 2020

Our Sports Centre opened its new floodlit 3G pitch, which is now used for a range of sports in all weathers, including football, rugby league and union, softball and even ultimate frisbee!

MARCH 2022

We ranked 6th in the English Social Mobility Index, recognising our inclusive approach, and our focus on developing our students into workready graduates.

FEBRUARY 2022

The build of Energy House 2.0 was completed. This unique facility will play a key role in accelerating the progress towards low carbon and net zero housing design and builds upon the success of the original Energy House, which opened in 2012.

Our commuter hubs opened, providing a dedicated space for commuting students to relax between lectures. They feature chill-out spaces, a lounge area with TV, a kitchenette with microwaves, fridges, hot water and lockers.

Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester holds an ever-changing collection of historic fine art, contemporary and modern art, textiles, prints and sculptures set in the beautiful Whitworth Park.

Manchester city centre offers shops to suit every budget, with the best high street and designer names at the Arndale Centre, as well as vintage and alternative markets in Afflecks Palace and the Northern Quarter. You can also find lots of specialist goods from around the world.

We admit it, we’re a bunch of foodies here and you can experience all types of cuisine at Salford and Manchester’s many food and drink establishments.

Greater Manchester benefits from a huge range of food options. From specialist supermarkets for Chinese and South East Asian foods in China Town, to Rusholme’s ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, Afro-Caribbean food in Cheetham Hill, and award-winning restaurants in the city centre. All tastes and dietary requirements are catered for, and Halal, Kosher, vegetarian and vegan food is widely available. MUSIC AND THEATRE

Manchester and Salford have a rich history of producing famous musicians and bands. There are many music venues around the city such as the AO Arena Manchester, the Academy and the O2 Apollo which attracts Adele, Ed Sheeran and many other international artists. Plus annual festivals such as Parklife and Sounds from the Other City.

Greater Manchester welcomes people of all religions and beliefs and a broad range of religious communities are represented. You can find places of worship for all major religions across Greater Manchester and we offer space and support on our campus for religious practice.

TRAVEL

Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria stations can take you to London in just over two hours and Liverpool in 45 minutes. Manchester Airport has daily flights around the world including direct flights to China, India and the United States. Manchester and Salford have excellent transport links, with Peel Park campus accessible via many bus services. The Metrolink tram runs regularly between MediaCity and Manchester city centre.

NATURE

Besides the beautiful Peel Park right on campus, Greater Manchester is close to some of the finest nature spots in the country. From Heaton Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, to Fletcher Moss Park & Botanical Gardens, or Sale Water Park, there are many nice places to visit close by. Slightly further afield, the Lake District is famous for its stunning lakes, forests and mountains and its links with Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth, and yummy fudge! The Peak District and Yorkshire Dales are also gorgeous spots for a day trip.

SPORT

If you’re into sport, you couldn’t choose a better city to live and study in. Sportcity houses Manchester City Football Club’s Etihad Stadium, as well as the National Squash Centre and Regional Tennis Centre. Here you’ll also find the National Cycling Centre which includes the Manchester Velodrome and Manchester BMX Club.

Old Trafford, home to the worldfamous Manchester United Football Club, is just two miles from Peel Park campus, along with Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

As a city that lives and breathes sport, whether you’re interested in cricket, badminton, football, volleyball, or any other sport, you’ll find a team in Manchester. Manchester is even home to the UK’s longest indoor ski slope - you can go along and enjoy real snow, even if you don’t want to ski or snowboard.

PEEL PARK

Our main campus, Peel Park, offers you the best of both worlds: state-of-the-art learning facilities within minutes of a world-class city, set against beautiful green spaces to relax and socialise.

On this campus you’ll easily spot our futuristic New Adelphi building, the home of our art, design, music, and performance subjects. Equally as eyecatching though is the Peel building, opened in 1896 and one of our founding buildings, now home to students studying courses in environment and life sciences. Peel Park campus is also home to our new £65 million Science, Engineering and Environment building.

Frederick Road campus is where all our health and social science courses are delivered. It houses an impressive range of facilities, including a radiography centre, a psychology testing lab, a world-class human performance laboratory, and working clinics for prosthetics and orthotics, podiatry and sport and rehabilitation.

Here you’ll also find our simulation suites which include a midwifery clinic with birthing simulators, a replica hospital environment, counselling suites and an Occupational Therapy rehabilitation flat.

FREDERICK ROAD MEDIACITY

We are the only university to have a campus at MediaCity, the home of TV, digital and creative businesses in the north, including the BBC and ITV.

MediaCity is a lively, professional environment, with a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops and leisure facilities.

SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENT’S NEW HOME

Our new £65 million home for the School of Science, Engineering and Environment sits at the heart of our Peel Park campus.

Opened in 2022, this world-class sustainable, four-storey facility is part of a £2.5 billion Crescent Masterplan, a 240-acre major regeneration scheme aimed at driving economic and social prosperity for the whole of the city.

100% electric-powered and supported by 154 roof-mounted photo-voltaic panels to provide renewable energy, the new build features cutting-edge research facilities, including a wind tunnel and high-spec laser laboratories.

Designed to facilitate student, academic and industry partner collaboration on real-world projects, the building is home to departments including built environment, science, computing and engineering, as well as our flagship Maker Space.

I am studying in the amazing Science, Engineering and Environment building. The incredible facilities have made it easier for me to progress and develop the skills I need for my future career.

SIMULATION SUITE

When you train to become a nurse, midwife or allied health professional at Salford, you’ll experience realistic scenarios in the safe and supportive environment of our Simulation Suite.

Set up to replicate a hospital, the suite is equipped with all the equipment and props required including high-tech computercontrolled manikins that can be used to simulate complex healthcare scenarios. Working with both manikins and trained human-simulated patients and relatives you’ll learn how to perform vital procedures, plus you’ll practice clinical and non-technical skills that you’ll use throughout your career. You’ll practice under the supervision of trained

practitioners who will facilitate your learning and encourage you to reflect on your actions during the debrief that follows scenarios.

As part of the suite, we also have a realistic home environment featuring two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a bathroom and two 360° immersive simulation rooms. The 360° immersive rooms allow students to be immersed in any virtual environment. The technology is fully interactive - a series of cameras project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to enhance the realism. You’ll also have access to additional technology to enhance your learning and provide a truly interactive experience.

RADIOGRAPHY SUITES

Our Centre for Medical Imaging, located on our Frederick Road campus, has allowed the University to become nationally and internationally recognised. The facility has recently undergone a massive development thanks to a £2.5 million investment from a collaboration with GE Healthcare.

With unrivalled clinical and simulation facilities, the facility is home to a Revolution Maxima CT scanner, two Discovery static digital X-ray systems, an Optima digital mobile X-ray system and five ultrasound scanners. Following a recently won grant from Garfield Weston, we have also acquired a Sonograph Pristina 3D full field digital mammography system. Additionally, the imaging centre has a digital intraoral and orthopantomography dental imaging systems and MedaPhor intelligent ultrasound simulators.

CLIFFORD WHITWORTH LIBRARY

Our main library is a modern learning space with PC suites, Mac computers and laptops available to loan as well as bookable study areas, a cafe and a brand new wellness room for relaxing and chilling out after a day of studying.

The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can study at a time that suits you. You’ll also find study spaces across the University, so a quiet place to work is never far away.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE LABORATORY OUR CLINICS

Our Human Performance Lab is a teaching and research facility used by students on our sport and exercise courses, as well as physiotherapy, podiatry and prosthetics and orthotics.

It’s one of the best equipped labs of its kind, containing almost every type of physiological, performance analysis and biomechanical testing equipment, including industrystandard hardware and software for performance analysis such as HiPod filming equipment, Sportscode, Wyscout, and Nacsport. The lab also contains a 30 metre sprint track with inbuilt force platforms, motion capture systems, blood and gas analysis equipment and speed guns.

On campus we have a number of working clinics including podiatry and sports injury clinics, a counselling centre and prosthetics and orthotics labs. Under the supervision of fully trained staff, our students use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide a wide range of treatments to patients and clients.

BODMER LABORATORY

The Bodmer Lab provides our students with learning experiences using advanced technical equipment in an accessible, interconnected environment. Equipped with a sophisticated AV system and network of screens, the space is designed to ensure that students can clearly see and hear the lecturers and technicians from wherever they are situated.

The Bodmer Lab, named after Sir Walter Bodmer, the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is our multimillion-pound hub for students studying biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and wildlife related courses.

The learning suites in Salford Business School offer a range of technologically enhanced spaces to enrich your applied learning. You’ll have access to digitally-powered collaborative group and individual spaces that facilitate live projects and discussions.

You’ll learn by using tools such as Digital Whiteboards, Gameplay Applications and VR headsets that simulate the working environments of the future.

ENERGY HOUSE 2.0

Our ENERGY HOUSE is the only fully climate-controlled (inside and out) terraced house in the world. Research at Energy House over the last ten years has led to important changes in the way that UK housing becomes more energy efficient.

NEW ADELPHI

New Adelphi is the home of arts and culture on campus, designed to inspire your imagination and spark your curiosity. If you study music, performance, or art and design, you’ll hone your skills in facilities that mirror those used by professionals in the industry.

Artists and designers have their own dedicated workshops, ranging from traditional model making tools to 3D printers and laser cutters. The printing lab contains specialist equipment from screen printers and lithotables to etching presses and felt looms.

All of these facilities allow us and our students to strengthen the relationships we have with industry, including The Lowry, Islington Mill, ITV and the BBC.

The theatre is equipped with the latest lighting, PA equipment and high-powered projection, seating for up to 350 people, and can be adapted to different configurations to suit each individual event.

Our professional-quality screen acting studios allow you to film in front of high definition cameras, while the voice acting studio will give you the chance to master a variety of vocal performances used in radio or video game production.

Music students have access to six professional recording studios, built using specialist room-within-room construction methods and housing recording booths, Yamaha pianos, drum kits from DW and Gretsch and amplification by Ampeg, Fender and Vox.

The adjoining control rooms are extensively equipped with hardware audio processors from Bricasti, Neve and Warm Audio and feature the first six new ‘Heritage Edition’ recording consoles in the country, manufactured by Audient. Primary monitoring is provided by ATC and PMC loudspeakers.

Budding photographers can experiment with new techniques in our professional photography studios, which feature lighting equipment, a dark room and the latest cameras and accessories.

MEDIACITY

MediaCity is at the heart of digital creativity and is home to the BBC, ITV, the University of Salford and over 200 other companies from the creative and digital media sectors.

It’s the main learning space for our media, film, TV and digital courses. 1,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students are based at our MediaCity campus and enjoy access to industry-standard production suites, TV studios, a TV newsroom and animation suites. Being based in one of the country’s leading digital and creative hubs also means that our students are ideally placed to take advantage of industry placement and collaboration opportunities. TOUR

MediaCity is home to our student-led broadcast channel, Quays News - our University-wide news channel made by students right here on campus with support from industry professionals and guest editors from the BBC and ITV.

STOP-FRAME STUDIO

Here you can find five animation booths equipped with industry-standard lighting, grip, software and cameras. The booths are versatile and can be configured to meet a variety of production needs.

POST-PRODUCTION

There are a mixture of dedicated editing suites and classrooms with Mac and PC workstations equipped to meet the demands of contemporary workflows in editing, colour grading, VFX, animation, audio editing and mixing.

WORLD-CLASS TV STUDIOS

Here, you have full 1080p HD cameras and video systems with 5.1 surround sound mixing, fully-virtual 3D sets and green screens equivalent to those used by the BBC, ITV and Sky.

We also have three radio studios designed to match the set up of the BBC’s radio studios.

JOURNALISM CENTRE

This contains TV news and radio studios, gallery space and newsroom for editing content packages.

THE DIGITAL MEDIA PERFORMANCE LAB

We have one of the largest HD screens in Europe, right here in Salford. This experimental performance and lecture space is perfect for showcasing computer games, animation, dance and new creative technology.

FABRICATION LAB

This is a specialist workshop and studio space designed to encourage creative collaboration between physical process and digital design.

WELCOME TO THE MAKER

SPACE - our flagship additive and digital manufacturing facility supported by our Salford-based industry partner Morson Group - a global leader in technical recruitment and engineering excellence.

THE MAKER SPACE

The Maker Space is open to students, staff and industry partners to explore and iterate solutions for manufacturing, electronics and design challenges.

Students have access to several digital and technology enabled workspaces with access to 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters and clean working spaces for testing, metrology and assembling projects. There is also a dedicated computer suite for 2D and 3D design (CAD) and electronics workbenches.

The Maker Space includes the Morson Engine Room, a heavy duty workshop with industrial grade machinery fitted with a waterjet cutter, 5-axis CNC mill, CNC laithe, CNC router and welding station, that supports industry-standard methods of production.

SUSTAINABILITY AT SALFORD

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing society. As one of the largest organisations in Greater Manchester, with over 25,000 students and 2,500 staff across 27 buildings and around 70 hectares, we are aware of our impact on local, national and international environments.

In the 2021 REF results, 78% of research at Salford was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. With research into Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences regarded as 100% outstanding or having very considerable impact.

Our vision is that by embedding sustainability in all aspects of university life, we will enable our University community to have a great place to study, live, work and relax, all whilst ensuring we are managing our social and environmental impact.

Consisting of four different planted sections that include biodiversity, seasonal, pollinator, edible – this mass of plant life and soil helps utilise excess rainwater from across the University and attract more biodiversity to the campus.

ENERGY HOUSE LABS

Salford’s Energy House is a unique research and testing laboratory which comprises an early 20th century two-bedroom terrace house within an environmental chamber. Over the last ten years, research here has led to important changes in the way that UK housing becomes more energy efficient.

In February 2022, we opened Energy House 2.0. This unique facility with two environmental chambers, each able to accommodate two detached houses under controlled conditions, will play a key role in accelerating the progress towards low carbon and net zero housing design.

Situated right on our doorstep sits the green haven of Peel Park, which is a perfect escape from city life. Bringing tranquility to our campus, Peel Park is perfect for a summer picnic, early morning jog or leisurely stroll to clear your head in between lectures.

In 2022, the University ranked 9th out of 153 UK institutions and received a First-Class award in the People and Planet’s University League. Salford was named as one of the UK’s most sustainable universities based on criteria including energy sources and waste to sustainable food and education for sustainable development.

Team Salford unites all sports teams at the University, with the aim of making exercise accessible and fun for everyone. You can’t think about Salford and Manchester without thinking about sport, it’s in our blood. SPORTS CENTRE

Our facilities include a 25 metre swimming pool with a spa and sauna, five fitness suites - including strength, cardio and conditioning rooms, all containing the latest gym equipment supplied by our partners Matrix Fitness UK - and a multi-use sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and five-a-side-football. The Sports Centre also provides access to two 11-a-side football pitches and a brand-new 3G pitch that can be used for a range of activities such as football, rugby league and union, ultimate frisbee, softball and much more.

We offer a range of fitness classes in our state-of-the-art Studio Room, including Boxfit, Zumba, yoga, pilates, studio cycling and HIIT Bounce. We regularly refresh our timetable to bring you a variety of enjoyable classes at convenient times. Located on Peel Park campus, the Sports Centre is the perfect place to keep fit and healthy, relax and make friends, right on your doorstep.

Our Sport Rehabilitation students offer free sports massages and injury treatment on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons for Sports Centre members and sports team members during term times (this service is subject to availability). This is a unique student-led service offering additional value to our memberships.

We have unique partnerships with Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club and Salford Red Devils Rugby League Club, with their staff studying MSc and PhD courses in our School of Health and Society and Salford Business School. We play a key part in pre and post season testing and management of the players alongside their medical and scientific staff, using our advanced research and testing facilities.

John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and are perfect for those studying a nursing or health course, as they're located next to our Frederick Road campus. We are just over a mile away from Manchester city centre; that’s just a 20-minute walk or five-minute journey if you hop on one of the many buses which run every few minutes. If you’re travelling by train, Salford Crescent is perfectly placed with four trains to Manchester Piccadilly every hour.

If you are travelling to our MediaCity campus, you can show your student ID card on the number 50 bus to ride for free from our Peel Park or Frederick Road campuses. Alternatively, if you’re commuting in by tram, there’s a Metrolink stop right outside our MediaCity campus.

If you’re coming in by bike or car, we have over 400 spaces for bicycles and over 1,000 car parking spaces across our campuses. Annual and monthly parking permits are available to buy, or you can simply pay as you go.

COMMON ROOMS

Our common rooms have everything you need to pass the time between lectures with solo and group study spaces, a lounge area with TV, a kitchenette with microwaves and fridges, gender-neutral accessible toilets, lockers, charging points and even a pool table.

It only takes me 10 minutes to reach Salford Crescent from Manchester Piccadilly and from there it is only a couple of minutes to my class. I sometimes have classes at MediaCity and take advantage of the free bus service between Peel Park campus and MediaCity.

On campus we have loads of chill-out spaces and comfortable seating zones for our commuting students.

Our Wellbeing Advisers provide you with a confidential non-judgmental space where you feel listened to. They will help to explore solutions for any emotional problems you may be experiencing.

We have a mental health nurse, a psychologist and three social workers who are accessible through an appointment with a Wellbeing Adviser and you can receive ongoing support with them if this is appropriate. We also have relationships with external services should you need further ongoing support or a supported referral to a specialist service.

We offer a counselling service that provides talking therapy and can help you on your personal journey to understanding your issues. These sessions are confidential and your information won’t be shared with any other services, except in the most exceptional of circumstances.

Starting a degree whilst looking after young children can be challenging, but there is a wealth of services available to you at Salford

Disability is a word used to describe any sensory, physical or medical condition which may impact your day to day life and also your ability to undertake study.

LGBTQIA+

Greater Manchester is a great place to be LGBTQI+. It is one of the gayest cities in the UK and even holds the largest Trans festival in the world, the Sparkle Weekend. Canal Street is where all things LGBTQI+ are centred, not just gay bars and restaurants but community facilities also have a presence there. The University participates in Manchester Pride each year and you are welcome to come and celebrate Pride with us.

If you are from a country where LGBTQI+ rights are not as good as in the UK, it can be hard to come out and meet people. But don't worry, we make it easy to do this. In askUS we have an LGBTQI+ Team that can advise you and help you meet people. Contact them at lgbt@salford. ac.uk. The Students’ Union also have a LGBTQI+ Society which is another opportunity to meet people and socialise.

The Salford Trans Forum is a group that meets regularly to provide students with opportunities to continue to make Salford trans and non-binary friendly. We are also a Stonewall Diversity Champion and are working towards being one of the first trans and non-binary friendly universities in the UK. We have staff who can help support your transition at university if you need it.

FEES AND FINANCE

To make moving to a new country as easy as possible we have created the following guide to show all the fees you will need to pay, plus information on the funding options that are available.

HOW MUCH WILL I NEED?

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) office requires you to provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself throughout the whole period of your studies. Without this, you will not be able to obtain a Student Route visa.

Costs that you will need to consider:

/ Living costs: a minimum of £9,207* per year (maintained 28 days prior to your visa application).

/ Study deposit (paid before you begin your course): £5,500*. This is required before we can issue you an unconditional offer and give you your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

/ Undergraduate fees: £15,720 - £18,300* per year.

/ Postgraduate taught (full-time) fees: £16,380 - £20,340*.

/ International Foundation Year fees: £13,750*

/ The Immigration Health Surcharge, which is currently £ 470* per year.

You can choose to pay your fees in full before your course starts and save 3% of the net total, or you can set up a payment plan. If you set up a payment plan, you will pay in five or seven consecutive monthly instalments, depending on the course you are studying.

COST OF LIVING IN SALFORD

ACCOMMODATION

On-campus accommodation (run by Campus Living Villages) starts from £125* per week, depending on site and room size. Private accommodation (off-campus) will cost a minimum of £447* per month for a house share or £558* and upwards for a studio flat.

UTILITIES AND OTHER OUTGOINGS

If you are not living in campus accommodation, you’ll also need to take into account the cost of bills for water, electricity, gas and internet.

FOOD AND GROCERIES

There are a range of supermarkets to suit every budget, as well as farmers markets and independent shops. Preparing fresh meals at home rather than buying pre-prepared or takeaway food will save you money. Don’t forget to budget for cleaning products and toiletries as well. We estimate you will need to spend around £170* for essential food per month.

BOOKS AND STATIONERY

New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books second-hand to save money. The Student Store on campus sells affordable stationery.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Our gym membership start from £14* per month, depending on the facilities you choose to use. University sports teams will charge weekly membership fees, plus the cost of your kit.

LEISURE

A cinema ticket costs from £5 - £12*, and theatre tickets between £13 - £75*. An evening meal at a restaurant with friends typically costs around £15-20* each, plus the cost of any drinks. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants and cinemas.

TRANSPORT

A single bus ticket costs £2*, a weekly bus ticket costs about £17*, a single ticket on the tram costs from £1.40* and a weekly tram ticket starts from £10.60* depending on your destination. Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes.

STUDENT DISCOUNT

Students are eligible to buy a TOTUM card which gives you access to exclusive student deals on food and fashion, tech and travel, and everything in between.

REGISTRATION AND INTERNATIONAL CHECK-IN

Before you start your course at the University of Salford you need to register as a student. This will allow you to collect your student ID card and will fully activate your IT and library accounts, allowing you to benefit from all of our services. 1. BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Make sure you hold an unconditional offer and have used your CAS to apply for a Student Visa to study in the UK. When you are eligible to register, you will receive an email containing your student ID number (i.e. @01234567) and a PIN number. Follow the link in your registration email and book an International Check-in appointment to provide your immigration documents to the University.

2. WHEN YOU ARRIVE

When you arrive in the UK you must attend your International Check-in appointment at the allotted time and date. It is very important that you bring original versions of the documents asked for in your offer letter. These will include:

/ Your passport

/ Your visa

/ Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or the letter from the Home Office telling you where to collect your visa (BRP card) from

/ Your unconditional offer letter or transcripts from the University of Salford

/ Any qualifications used to obtain your offer including your English Language qualifications.

The University is required by law to hold a copy of these documents to ensure that we can provide proof of your leave to remain in the UK should this information be requested by the Home Office.

3. AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT

Once you have attended the International Check-in appointment, you will be able to complete online registration and finalise payment of your tuition fees. You must complete this straight away to ensure you are a registered student.

The University has a responsibility to report any student who fails to register to the Home Office. If you are unable to register on time, please contact our registration team at registration@salford.ac.uk so we can advise you on your options.

4. ORIENTATION

To help ensure you meet the requirements of your Student Visa and settle into your course at the University, orientation events will be advertised for you to attend. Part of your orientation will explain how to remain compliant with the conditions of your visa during your studies. We would highly recommend that you attend this and also contact the Home Office Compliance Team if you have any additional questions.

OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK IN THE UK AFTER GRADUATING

WORK PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Here at Salford, we pride ourselves on giving our students the practical industry experience that they need to succeed in their chosen career.

All of our courses offer opportunities to collaborate with industry, including hearing from guest speakers, live projects and field trips. Many of our courses also offer opportunities to undertake a work placement, which range from a few weeks to a year in length.

Apart from the obvious fact that is a good addition to your CV, a work placement also helps you to appreciate and have a better understanding of what you have been taught in the classroom.

THE SALFORD EXPERIENCE

My course is covered over five modules, Digital Marketing and Data Analytics, Online and Offline Consumer Behaviour, Integrated Marketing Communication, Search and Social Media Management and the final module which makes the University of Salford stand apart from its competitors is the Industry Collaboration Project. The Industry Collaboration Project allows you to complete a paid placement as part of your final module. This course doesn’t focus on just one area of the business and hence I will have exposure to all the segments of Digital Marketing.

MY PLACEMENT EXPERIENCE

I am placed with Self Storage Tameside as a Digital Marketing Intern managing two of their important websites.

Having found a paid placement during a pandemic and in my area of interest is more than what I could ask for and it is the University of Salford’s Careers and Enterprise team that I have to thank. They helped me review my CV so that it was ready to send to employers, as well as, helping me to develop my interview technique with mock interviews and personalised feedback. All the guidance and help that the Careers and Enterprise team have provided is commendable.

PLACEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

I get to use the best in class Digital Marketing tools. I have a daily meeting with the owner of the company

where we go through the tasks of the day, look at what revenue we have made and tweak the strategies we have for the next day. My usual day at work is busy with writing blog posts, creating new webpages, managing the website content, PPC and more. I enjoy going to work and taking on new challenges. 3. RECEIVE AND ACCEPT YOUR OFFER

After assessing your application, we may send you a conditional offer. This means that you will need to provide additional information, for example, a high school diploma certificate or your final degree result. Details of what additional information is required will be detailed in your conditional offer letter.

You must formally accept your offer to confirm your place at the University of Salford.

You must also make sure you meet the conditions of your offer by the specified deadline to secure your place on your course.

4. PAY DEPOSIT OR PROVIDE PROOF OF SPONSORSHIP

/ Self-funded international students must pay a tuition fee deposit of £5,500* before they arrive at the University, and before we can issue a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies).

/ Sponsored students (students with an official financial sponsor) must provide official evidence of financial sponsorship.

5. APPLY FOR ACCOMMODATION

Complete the online application for accommodation as soon as you have accepted your offer. Accommodation is not guaranteed, but offered on a first come, first served basis.

If you need to apply for your CAS you will be sent details of how to do this once you receive your unconditional offer. It is important to complete the CAS request form as accurately as possible, including uploading any requested documents, to ensure that this information is correct on your CAS. We will send a CAS by email which you must check and confirm the details are correct. You will need your CAS number to apply for a Student Visa.

SPONSORED STUDENTS

You will also be required to upload your sponsorship letter. This must be addressed to the University and state exactly how much and for what you are being sponsored for. For example, tuition fees or tuition fees and maintenance.

SELF-FINANCING (NON-SPONSORED) STUDENTS

As part of your CAS request, you will be required to upload your bank statement to demonstrate that you have the required amount of maintenance funds in place before you apply for your visa.

The current level of funds required to prove you can maintain yourself whilst in the UK is £1,023* per month.

If your course duration isn’t given in whole months, the number of months’ maintenance

costs you are required to show will be rounded up a month (so, if your course is three months and one week long, you’ll need to show four months’ maintenance costs)

STUDENTS SUPPORTED BY PARENTS

If you are being supported by your parents and you are uploading their bank statements, it will be necessary to upload documentation which supports their relationship to you, for example a birth certificate and a letter confirming you can use their funds. Failure to provide any evidence of maintenance will result in your CAS request being denied.

You should not apply for a visa if any of the information on the CAS statement is incorrect as doing so will lead to your Student Visa application being refused.

When you apply for your Student Visa, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) and obtain your IHS number for inclusion on your Student Visa application form. For information on the IHS, please see gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application

MEET MEGHA

International graduate, Megha Rahti, from Nepal, loved her course and, most of all, working on a research paper for the BBC!

Hi Megha, what did you enjoy most about your course?

Without a doubt, my favourite thing about my course was the way it was taught. All my lecturers highly encouraged critical thinking and all our ideas were welcomed with so much respect. We were never addressed as students; we were seen as media psychologists and this made my journey of becoming one feel natural and effortless. We also had amazing labs and equipment which helped us see how things really work in our field. The course also featured multiple guest lecturers, all experts in their respective fields. We really got the best of it all!

How did you feel about being so far from home? How did you settle in?

I come from a very small town in Nepal. My experience of having to move to India at very young age to study helped me adjust to life in the UK. However, what helped me the most was the warm welcome I received from my lecturers. I was also lucky to be able to make friends straight away! The Student Support services at the University of Salford also went above and beyond to ensure that we were all feeling safe and comfortable at all times. I always felt at home at Salford. Maybe it was because everyone always wants to hold the door open for you, or the amount of intellectually stimulating conversations I had on campus.

What was your experience with the BBC like?

Right from the start, we had multiple guest lectures from the BBC team whose lectures were highly informative and interactive and gave us an insight into their work life at the BBC. We worked on various projects for them until one day we were told we could choose our dissertation based on some research areas they were interested in and present our findings to them.

My research topic was ‘Love in a Digital Age’. I never thought I would work on a research paper that would be relevant to the BBC! This was such an amazing journey!

What are you doing now that you have completed your course?

I am currently in the process of setting up my own company and I am looking at India and Nepal as primary locations. I also have plans to pursue a PhD and continue in academia.

Lastly, what was your favourite thing about living in Manchester?

Easy – Manchester United and match nights!

MEET PIYUSH

Piyush Bhanu graduated with an MSc in Biomedicine and has now started a company back in India, called Xome Life Sciences, that is developing food intolerance testing kits.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I definitely learned a lot during my studies at Salford. We had courses on enterprising our biotech products and building something for the consumer which would be helpful to them. During the entire course, I learnt about many useful and fascinating topics and interacted with different people, which really opened-up my view of the world around me!

What did you do after graduation?

I moved back to India and was successful with my bid to receive a grant of £10,000 from the Indian Government to prototype and develop an intolerance testing kit. Users of the kit will be able to detect foods that they are intolerant to and eliminate these foods from the diet in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle and fitness goals.

MEET SUJANHARIHARAN

Sujanhariharan Ragunathan from India came to Salford to study MA Digital Video Production and Marketing.

What is the best thing about your course?

I really enjoy how practical the course has been. In my first trimester, we were tasked with creating a video campaign for Salford Foodbank. This gave me the opportunity to try out different roles including director and cinematographer.

What work experience have you taken part in as part of your course?

I was given the opportunity to work alongside my module leader, Mirage Islam. I was brought in as a Campaign Researcher to work on a live pitch

What are your future plans?

Currently, we are developing the prototype and soon we will be applying for patents in the UK and Germany. The next big market for us is there. The UK will certainly be our next stop once we raise to the next round, as I am quite aware of the English market.

MEET MUAZZAM

Muazzam Deen came from Nairobi in Kenya to Salford (that’s a distance of 6,450 miles!) to study BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering. He says this experience has moulded him into a different person and he has enjoyed every minute of it.

Why did you choose the University of Salford?

I chose Salford because it has state of the art facilities that are used to conduct experiments relative to the course along with a team of industry experienced lecturers. Salford is also ranked as one of the top universities offering a course in Aeronautical engineering.

What’s the best thing about the course?

It has truly made me appreciate and understand the amount of thinking and reasoning that is required to make aircraft the way they are. The

way the theory is deduced and how it is applied in reality, is what astounds me the most.

What is the support like for international students?

MEET WENWEN

Wenwen Wang, an MA Dance Performance and Professional Practices graduate, came to the UK to study after retiring from the national rhythmic gymnastics team of China from the University of Salford. Since then she has become a television star after appearing on China’s The Greatest Dancer!

Hi Wenwen, what experience and skills did you gain at the University of Salford?

I learnt to adapt to different dance styles, and I have become more open-minded and versatile after working with different amazing artists with their own uniqueness. I also had the amazing opportunity to join the Emergence Dance Company and work with internationally renowned choreographers and performers.

What’s next in store for you?

I would love to dance professionally for the next couple of years, maybe even in Europe. Longer term, my goal is to have a studio one day so young dancers have the facilities to grow and learn. Teaching ballet and contemporary dance is also something I would

definitely try.

What advice would you give to students who are considering studying in the UK and specifically at the University of Salford?

Be daring to try out new ideas, university is the best time to experiment new areas. Be social and make as many friends as possible!

Wenwen also won the Dean’s Award at the School of Arts and Media’s Create Student Awards. The award is given to one student every year who has shown outstanding levels of devotion and commitment to their course, contributing to the outputs of the school and wider university, whilst working exceptionally hard to achieve their potential and beyond.

Sibongiseni arrived in Salford from Eswatini as part of the 2023 Chevening Scholarship cohort to study MA Public Relations and Digital Communications.

Why did you choose the University of Salford?

The course spoke to exactly what I wanted. It was clear that it was not only going to prepare me for the industry of today but the industry of the future. I was also attracted to the opportunity to study at MediaCity.

Did you carry out any work placements?

TRANSFORMING PRODUCTS AND IMPROVING PRACTICE IN HUMAN MOVEMENT AND REHABILITATION

Salford’s Human Movement and Rehabilitation team works with industry across the globe to improve the lives of people with mobility problems. This ranges from people who have difficulty walking and rely on gait analysis to inform diagnosis and treatment, to the millions of workers who stand for long periods at work and suffer musculoskeletal pain and to the survivors of stroke, for whom regaining limb movement is key to their daily activities.

In addressing these issues, Salford’s research led to the first major update to clinical gait analysis methods in 40 years, impacting the work of 1,000 clinical laboratories worldwide, some 80% of the global sector; it challenged the occupational footwear sector’s focus on accident prevention, redirecting it toward footwear to protect musculoskeletal health, resulting in a new company, strategy and products (>60,000 sold); and it produced a patented rehabilitation technology that provides high-quality physical therapy without the need for highly skilled staff, resulting in a spin-out company in China, investment of GBP2,000,000 and benefitting 1,350 patients in its first 18 months.

MAINSTREAMING URBAN AGRICULTURE: BRINGING THE BENEFITS OF FOOD GROWING TO CITIES

Urban Agriculture, the practice of cultivating and producing food in cities, is growing in importance in terms of sustainability. The practice offers substantial social, economic and environmental benefits for communities, such as job creation, improving mental health and greening neighbourhoods. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding sustainable models, models for upscaling and best practices to implement Urban Agriculture. Researchers at Salford have pioneered the implementation of upscaled Urban Agriculture, leading to creation of the largest urban farm in the UK and a wide range of other assets.

Our research has also highlighted the value of the concept in decision-making processes and supported policy change to enable wider-scale application of the practice. In doing so, we have directly enabled £2,500,000 in funding for the practice so far and secured Government commitment for a further £8,000,000 to mainstream the concept in the UK. Salford’s research has been instrumental in creating jobs, shaping environments, influencing policy and effecting behaviour change, which has enabled the Urban Agriculture concept to flourish at scale.

Some courses may have additional fees associated with them, for example for specific materials or field trips. We make every effort to assist students in finding placements where they are a requirement of their courses. However,

employers have a limited number of placements available and we cannot guarantee that students will have access to the placement of their choice. Students who wish to undertake placements as an optional part of their course are responsible for finding them, but support will be provided (the course information in this prospectus directs you to the applicable course web page where you can find more detail).

Following your application for a particular course, you will receive further information from us detailing the terms and conditions which govern your relationship with us. Students are required to comply with the University’s academic and other regulations, rules and procedures.
