Welcome/

2025 marks ten years since formally establishing Architecture at the University of Salford. The introduction of undergraduate and postgraduate Architecture programmes builds on the university’s almost 130year social history of construction, engineering, design, and making that is intertwined with the city’s industrial landscape. Our aspirations draw on this heritage to continue shaping dynamic, meaningful, and just urban and architectural futures rooted in the foundations of the profession, climate equity, and cutting-edge technology.

As we look back to recognise value, we are grateful to Professor Hisham Elkadi, who retired earlier this year, for leading the development of Architecture at Salford. Hisham’s pioneering use of the university campus as a test bed for architectural research and experimentation continues to inspire our expansion into computational design, artificial intelligence and robotics. Our novel approach embraces collaborative and generative technologies to address complex and multi-faceted socio-environmental challenges.

We are committed to exploring interactions and conditions through experimental processes to evaluate and reveal spatial arrangements, formal aesthetics, hybrid typologies, and new materialities. Making and critical analysis are central to our approach. We encourage making through iterative testing and refining, combined with physical assembling. It draws on heritage craft and expertise to inform new possibilities for advanced fabrication and technology applications. We promote this through critical analysis using robust design research methods, and thinking to produce responsive, agile, and effective interventions.

Our established and experienced team of academics and practitioners 4

periodically welcomes new members, recruiting award-winning expertise and increasing our research and enterprise activity. This shapes our learning environments and the way we impact industry and community engagement. Over the past two years, this has been augmented by high-profile academic guest lecturers like Professors Jala Makhzoumi, Albena Yaneva, Alessandro Armando, and Andrea Canclini and guest speakers from local and international practices like Buttress, DLA Architecture, Seven Architecture, Studio Maurice Shapero, Studio Mutt, ARUP, Buro Happold, MVRDV, Ramboll, and Zaha Hadid Architects, among others.

Our students are recognised for their relentless optimism and ambition for meaningful change in uncertain and challenging professional and societal contexts. This year, they established the Salford Architectural Society to represent students across all our five programmes. They connected with wider regional student networks to host debates, engage communities and inspire younger generations. Employers recognise their enthusiasm, where their entrepreneurial appetite makes positive impact on local and global sustainability, accessibility and equality.

Today, we continue under our new moniker, the Salford Laboratory of Architecture (S-LAB) to learn from our rich heritage, inform our creative development and motivate our innovative futures thinking approach to shape a diverse, inclusive and agile profession.

BSc Architecture/ RIBA&ARB

Our BSc Architecture programme blends theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on design experience, all rooted in a rich architectural heritage. With creativity and critical thinking at its core, the programme equips students with the expertise to become inquisitive problem solvers in professional practice.

Our BSc Architecture programme Design Studio Projects foster the integration of aesthetic, spatial, and compositional principles, reinforced with cumulative knowledge from the parallel Modules; Design Technology, Practice, and History and Theory. The synthesis of the Modules encourages critical engagement with cultural, theoretical, ethical and socio-environmental issues.

Interdisciplinary collaborations are central on our BSc Architecture programme, particularly in Level 5 Multidisciplinary Project, which connects Architecture students with peers from other construction programmes; preparing them to appreciate and respond to complex challenges in diverse professional settings.

Strong industry links are evident through teaching by research-active staff and practicing professionals from local and national architectural practices, construction and engineering companies. Students engage with real-world architecture via local and national site visits.

Our BSc Architecture programme is supported by the Salford Laboratory of Architecture (S-LAB), celebrating its 10-year anniversary in September 2024. S-LAB embodies research-led and industry-focused pedagogy, fostering experimentation, live projects, and collaborations with world-leading research groups. It is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, representing a cosmopolitan society and embracing flexible, transnational, and multidisciplinary modes of studio learning.

Ali Zia

As a final-year student at the University of Salford, I have undertaken a graduation project on the planning and execution of the extension to the Working Class Movement Library in Salford. This proposal explores how architecture can carry meaning beyond form and function embedding symbolism directly into the building’s façade to reflect the values, resilience, and collective identity of the working-class movement. The design introduces a contemporary architectural language that gives visual form to a movement historically underrepresented by a singular symbol, turning the extension into both a functional space and a statement of cultural remembrance.

Andrew Conlin For my final year degree project I have undertaken the challenge of re-imagining the Working Class Movement Library, currently housed within Jubilee House, a Grade 2 listed building, in to a modern, sustainable building designed to house archival material and provide public access to the collection.

The design responds thoughtfully to the building’s heritage and the constraints of the conservation zone, respecting both the scale and height of the surrounding buildings. Additionally, the extension behind Jubilee House has been recessed in order to maintain its visual history from Action Square. The octagonal form creates a courtyard with an amphitheater-style focal point for performances and public engagement.

As part of my final-year architectural thesis at the University of Salford, I have collaborated with the Working Class Movement Library (WCML), exploring the intersection of cultural significance and adaptivity. Situated within Salford’s historic Crescent, the WCML offers a rich historical timeline. My project investigates how cultural institutions like the WCML can be reimagined in a different light where evolving communities and areas demand more inclusive and resilient design strategies. By integrating the library’s legaacy into my design process, I aim to propose an architecture that not only preserves historical significance but also is a catalyst for community, influence and societal engagement Material Exploration

Bethan Anderson As a final-year student at the University of Salford, I have undertaken a graduation project of the refurbishment and extension to the Working Class Movement Library in Salford. Thought needed to be had over the existing archives, issues surrounding accessibility and what future library would be. My proposal focuses on the concept of hierarchy with the ground floor becoming the social hub to allow for more functional public space, with the second floor being made up of enclosed spaces for private study and staff. This was achieved whilst retaining the north and east facades of the original building, in addition parts of the annex, with the reuse of removed elements key to my scheme.

Callum Jacobs-Barnes This project is a visionary reimagining of the library and archive typology, centred on the Working Class Movement Library in Salford. In a digital age, it explores new ways to access, preserve, and experience historical material through spatial design.

My proposal creates a hybrid museum-library that safeguards archives while reactivating the site as an inclusive civic and educational hub. Accessibility for all was a core principle, shaping circulation, layout, and engagement. Immersive digital media, flexible community spaces, and industrial-inspired materials honour working-class heritage while fostering a meaningful connection between past, present, and public life.

Devam Kachiwala As a final-year student at the University of Salford, I had the opportunity to develop a conservation and extension strategy to the Working Class Movement Library. The project centers around the core values of the existing building and its historical context.

The design also incorporates environmental strategy which considers methods which reduces the carbon footprint of the extension as well as the existing building. My aim for this design was to create spaces that exhibit the artifacts stored in the existing building while ensuring that the spaces encourage community centered activities and encourages social interactions.

Grace Share

Originally funded by public subscription to house nurses tending to individuals unable of affording healthcare, the Working Class Movement Library has always been for the people. But with time, its intent transcended its physical form. Nestled behind strong walls, the archive became physically, socially, and intellectually challenging to access. Those it was supposed to serve couldn’t reach it. This project puts the building back in its natural habitat. A complete retrofit releases the layout, enhances accessibility, and helps to bring the archive back into public view. Designed by social need and from recyclable materials, a new extension offers space for events, displays, and community use. Because history should be learnable by everyone, not simply legible by some, AR and VR displays, tactile learning zones, and quiet study rooms enable neurodivergent users.

The architecture flows like a living memory, and a sustainable design approach combines natural ventilation, solar gain, and repurposed materials to bring the ideals of the past into a climate-conscious future.

Harry Lockyear For my final degree project, I have produce a range of media outputs aligning with the brief for an extension for the Working Class Movement Library.

Following my own interpretation of the brief, I created a programme which would allow the Working Class Movement Library to become a more self-sustaining organisation, offering a range of facilities aimed at generating income for the library, including a gallery, exhibition, and cafe, along with renovating Jubilee House, where the WCML is based.

Hibah Ali

Reimagining the WCML through a dialectical lense, Continuum encapsulates the essence of a building that exists not as a fixed monument, but as a living part of an ongoing story.

It speaks to the uninterrupted flow between past and future. aligning with the marxist theory of dialectical materialism, the idea that social progress arises from contradiction and motion. This building is not a container of history; it is a process, a movement, a continuum. As my final year project i wanted to Elevation of my amazing building explore how to create a design that emphasises material and architec tural contradictions, such as contained archives versus open, participa tory spaces, hefty brick versus light timber, and orthogonal traditional forms versus fluid contemporary shapes.

As a final-year architecture student at the University of Salford, my Design Studio project reimagines the Working Class Movement Library (WCML) as a library hotel. The design preserves its historic identity while introducing hospitality, learning, and community use. A new underground passage connects the WCML to a modern extension—an interactive public library—symbolising the journey from history to contemporary engagement. The project focuses on adaptive reuse, spatial storytelling, Basement theory visual and inclusive design.

Natalia Kaczuk As a final-year student at the University of Salford, I have undertaken an ambitious and visionary project that aims to redefine the library and archive typology. As information is increasingly digitised and the hardware required to access it continue to evolve, we must rethink how we access historical data and how the structures and spaces we design can enhance this Ground floor experience.

My strategy focuses on strengthening connections between the existing library, the surrounding park, and the wider campus. While respecting the topology of the surrounding area and respoding in with a design that echos and mirrors the existing building while taking on modern architectural approches echoing manner. A new First floor extension activates the building’s northern edge, creating outdoor spaces for play, growing, sitting, and hosting events.

Salford Crescent has a diverse architectural style, from Georgian to Arts and Crafts to Gothic. The WCML itself is located at the far southwest end of the Crescent Conservation Area, surrounded by Listed Buildings. The map illustrates the main materials of surrounding buildings

Tia Manning Project: Future Heritage

The renovation and extension of The Working-Class Movement Library is an active form of protest- embodying resistance, remembrance and commemoration. Providing a space for working-class reconciliation- honouring the past and reclaiming the future.

Through engagement with the textile industry, this project explores material reuse as a reflection of time, heritage and memory- weaving in sustainable practices.

The approach taken creates space for working-class voices to be heard, resisting erasure towards their experience and existence.

Yasmine Amarsil As a final-year student at the University of Salford, my architectural journey has been shaped by a deep appreciation for both history and innovation. My current project, an extension of the Working Class Movement Library, seeks to honor the library’s rich legacy while introducing a contemporary space that engages with the community in new and meaningful ways. The design revolves around a transparent glass tunnel at ground level, connecting the original library with the new extension, creating a seamless flow between the old and the new. This intervention allows the history of the existing building to remain at the forefront, while also inviting to explore and interact with the updated facilities.

Being in the digital age, libraries are not an exception when it comes to digitalisation. Therefore, there is a demand to re-imagine libraries in a way that would facilitate the access to historic information and provide access and innovative ways of interacting with such material.

Through reviewing existing libraries Reflective Spaces and archives, along with their requirements, the refurbishment and extension of the WCML should aid in becoming a facility that welcomes and motivates people to frequent the library and learn, interact, and utilise the archival materials and books in the library.

As part of my final-year architectural project at the University of Salford, I worked with the Working Class Movement Library (WCML) to explore how cultural institutions can adapt to meet the needs of evolving communities. Located in Salford’s historic Crescent, the WCML has a strong legacy of public service and activism.

Siteplan for the Future Heritage Project My proposal reimagines the library through refurbishment and extension, focusing on accessibility, sustainability, and community use. The design retains key elements of the original structure and introduces a social ground floor, private study areas, and new exhibition and event spaces, including AR/VR features.

Alaa Salah Taha

As a final-year student at the University of Salford, my graduation project focuses on the reimagining of the Working Class Movement Library (WCML).

The project explores the adaptive reuse of the existing historic structure by integrating it with an adjacent building to create a contemporary library and community center.

Central to my approach was the preservation of the building’s historical identity while responding to modern-day needs. Drawing Main Interior Stairs inspiration from the architectural character of the existing façade, I designed the new addition to echo its aesthetic, creating visual harmony from the outside. Internally, however, the space evolves into a vibrant, inclusive environment tailored to accommodate diverse user groups across all ages.

BSc Architectural Engineering/CABE BSc Architectural Engineering combines design creativity and engineering principles. The program provides a systematic and conceptual understanding of key theories and methodologies of architecture, engineering, urban design and their application in real projects in a range of societal contexts. In parallel, students develop a comprehensive understanding of key aspects of sustainable design and collaborative, integrated design practices in architecture, building engineering and construction.

The programme encompasses planning and pre-design, design, construction, operation, and re-construction; it offers an opportunity for students from different domains to study together through multi-disciplinary projects. The programme promotes an action learning approach, with a focus on the workplace and current practice-based developments.

This interdisciplinary program equips students with the knowledge and skills to design and construct innovative, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing structures that meet the needs and trends of modern society.

Considering the structure is at the core of the students’ designs. Their creative work demonstrated the course’s philosophy: the structural elements of a building not only provide support and stability but also play a vital role in shaping its overall form, function, and aesthetic appeal Students view the relationship between architectural design and structural engineering, as continuous and reciprocal: they are trained to recognise that the structure itself is not merely a separate component but an integral part of the building’s identity.

Farah Abdelrahman As a final-year Architectural Engineering student at the University of Salford, I have reimagined the Working Class Movement Library as a spatial dialogue between past and future. By vertically splitting the existing structure and inserting a luminous polycarbonate extension, I seek to evoke the duality of past and future , creating a suspended narrative of light, translucency, and connection.

By merging archival preservation with contemporary intervention, the project explores how architecture can become a vessel for memory while provoking new interactions within the urban fabric. It is a celebration of Salford’s working-class heritage, reframed as a living, breathing testament to collective identity.

Kieran Pierce Thornhill This project presents an ambitious approach to the extension and renovation of The Working-Class Movement Library, bridging reclamation of space and identity.

To honour the working-class’ resilience, a network of open library, archive, exhibition and study spaces is provided- prioritising community engagement and education.

Material reuse, passive ventilation and accessible green spaces are embedded throughout to promote a low- carbon strategy, rooted in adaptability and inclusivity for future heritage.

This proposal redefines the Working-Class Movement Library (WCML) as an immersive, living archive where history is actively experienced .The design carefully balances respect for heritage with improved accessibility and public engagement, encouraging visitors to explore and reflect through a thoughtfully arranged sequence of spaces that move from informal discovery to deeper areas dedicated to learning, storytelling, and contemplation. This progression fosters meaningful connections with the archive’s social and political narratives. Circulation is deliberately structured to create moments of pause and interaction, reinforcing the relationship between movement, memory, and place. the project cultivates an inclusive environment where history is approached with openness, empathy, and relevance.

Hasna Abdo

This extension of the Working-Class Movement Library in Salford reimagines the panopticon—not as a tool of surveillance and control, but as a protective civic space. Traditionally designed for isolation, the circular form is reclaimed to foster connection, sheltering legal aid, mental health support, and a Radical Readers Room. In response to the 2023 Public Order Act and increased surveillance of activists, the design resists oppression through visibility, not silence. It transforms a symbol of discipline into a sanctuary of solidarity, empowering collective resistance and shared political agency. Rooted in working-class history, the space becomes a living archive and active resource— supporting protest, education, and wellbeing.

Robert Brazier

As a final-year student at the University of Salford, We were tasked with an extension and re-use project for the nearby working class movement library in The Crescent, Salford. The client is an organisation that seeks to the historic preserve local and international working class movement of the post-war consensus era. However the WCML has fallen into disrepair due to funding issues.

My design is a reimagining of how that first working movement found its architectural expression, brutalism. Utilising modern methods of construction and a low carbon mass timber design with stone cladding for the brutalist affect.

Street Scape

It brings brutalist asthetics into a modern context, helping to both expand the spaces and capabilities of the WCML as well as marrying the organisations form and function. Instead of having a modernist leftist organisation trapped within a victorian town house, the project stands in contrast with the existing proudly exemplifying the clients values and the building’s use as an archive of working class history.

Throughout the interior architecture programme we seek to turn the simplest of briefs into extraordinary experiences; spaces which excite the senses and deliver on their promises. We see interior architecture as an exploration of the intersection between the poetics of the existing and the social interactions which bring meaningful experiences to the interior.

Throughout the programme students are encouraged to take ownership and responsibility for their design decisions, adopting a pro-active approach to design research, ideation and learning. They successfully manage, develop and creatively investigate their own practice with both rigour and tenacity.

Through a creative & technically responsive approach to design, the innovative potential of our students is realised through a collaborative, explorative and energetic approach to design practice.

‘Bento’ proposes the thoughtful transformation of 60 Spring Gardens, a Grade II listed Renaissance-revival landmark by Alfred Waterhouse (1881). Layered with the memory of Manchester’s industrial past, the site now stands primed for a new kind of productivity; not of goods, but of experience, connection, and well being.

Drawing from the conceptual metaphor of the bento box, a container of diverse, interdependent elements, the design weaves together plant propagation, culinary craft, pottery, and social gathering into one spatial ecosystem. Here, waiting is not an empty time but activated potential, where participants reconcile their individual practice with a collective rhythm, engaging body, mind, and community.

KINK explores the future potential of night life culture through the development of a bar space and performance club. The scheme explores definitions of ‘kink’ as both architectural form and interior – a deconstruction of the existing space. Identity and culture are explored to form a queer identity into spaces, surfaces, functions and textures; a kink that reflects in all aspects of the scheme.

Sited in Manchester’s Gay Village the Bloom Street building is a part of the integral veins of the village along Canal Street. In the development of a ‘21st century nightclub’ understanding this historical cultural value is vital as there is no future without understanding the past.

ARC aims to be the central hub for Architectural Ceramic Research. Here, new technologies and innovations will both be ‘born’ and showcased. The space aims to inform the users of the many valuable and practical uses of architectural ceramic through a mixture of visual and physical experiences. A key focus of the design is the visual and auditory experience. This will be achieved not only through interactive showcase events, but also with the design and features of the building itself.

The space aims to re-imagine ceramic capabilities and its applications in modern Architecture. With a blend of traditional and modern, algorithmic design processes, ARC hopes to reignite the curiosity of modern-day designers to the capabilities of a material that, in Architectural terms, has been forgotten.

The BSc Architectural Design & Technology program provides students with systematic and conceptual knowledge and understanding of key theories and methodologies of architecture underpinned by an awareness of the technologies, systems, and materials required to develop a convincing design, to understand and manage its construction, and to deliver an asset maintainable through the full cycle of its expected life. With a growing emphasis on sustainability, adaptation and reuse, these studies are contextualised by understanding the evolving scientific, social and cultural role of the Built Environment and its industries in a challenging and challenged world.

For instance, students exploring adaptive reuse are presented with examples of some of the most challenging schemes with access to the Architects and Architectural Technologists involved to appreciate how ensuring Inclusive Design (universal access) to a retrofit scheme has benefits beyond just meeting compliance expectations etc. Students explore how engaging with fire safety, access and other upgrades often provides a durability to the integrity and maintenance of a Listed building the mere act of listing it does not. Equally students are encouraged to examine schemes where the retention of an existing structure with no seeming historic or architectural merit is key to meeting Carbon targets and other climate related challenges.

A faith space should be grounded and earthy, embracing the landscape that surrounds it. honouring & uniting belief in modest harmony.

This is an example of my final year at the University of Salford, from the Integrated Architectural Design & Practice Module, where students were instructed to design a structure of choice from a range of sites around campus.

My design idea formed the Adelphi Multi Steel cog column design - main prayer/conference hall Faith Centre, opposite Adelphi street on connecting industrial heritage to nature the Farmer Norton Carpark. Grounded in British industrial heritage, with material focus on recycled grey brick and exposed steel. Sustainable features include a quiet garden, open courtyard, green terraces, water harvesting systems, permeable pavers aswell as a solar panelled carpark shelter, EV charging points and bike stations.

As a final-year student at the University of Salford, one of my final modules required me to create a hotel. I approached this project as a comprehensive architectural exploration that responded to a real site, considering environmental, social, and urban contexts.

My focus throughout the project was on sustainable design, spatial experience, and how architecture can contribute to urban regeneration. I have explored materiality, structure, and form through both conceptual and technical development.

The name ‘Hotel Irwell’ was established due to the site being of walking distance to the beautiful River Irwell located in the heart of Salford.

Growing up in a family that cherished the theatre, I developed a lifelong love for performance, music, and the unique sense of unity that live shows bring. That moment when an audience gathers - strangers sharing the same space, drawn together by a common purpose has always felt profoundly powerful to me.

My final project explores the theatre not just as a building, but as a social vessel - one that inspires, connects, and transforms. Sustainability is integral to my theatre design, guiding choices in form, materiality, and performance. The building uses natural ventilation, daylighting, and Solar PV’s to reduce energy demand. The design incorporates biophilic elements that connect users to nature, creating a resilient, future-focused space that supports both community and climate.

Ultimately, this project brings together my passion for design, performance, and people. It is a tribute to the spaces that bring us together, and a reflection on the power of architecture to evoke emotion, encourage belonging, and stage collective experience.

BSc Interior Architecture/Year 1 Program Leader: Paul Blindell The Interior Architecture Design studio this year explored the future of retail and hospitality design as a move from transactional to relational in nature; a shift in emphasis from the sale of items and goods (transactional) to the promotion of a connectivity between people, place, processes and experiences (relational).

Students visited and documented the site (an existing double height commercial unit) to prepare a series of proposals which centred around ideas of making and production.

Here, the design journey is as important as it’s destination.

A liquid-smooth, open space that flows effortlessly and radiates tranquil energy. Light colours are used to create a soft, welcoming atmosphere, complemented by gentle, relaxing lighting. The overall feel is designed to be peaceful and breathable; a space that soothes the senses and invites ease, as customers enjoy their drink or dessert while surrounded by cats.

Visits to Willohaus Project BSc Architectural Engineering (Year1&2) Students of Architectural Engineering 1 (Year 1) and Architectural Engineering 2 (Year 2)-in T2 and T1, had the opportunity to visit Willohaus, Peru Street, Salford, with Dr Maria Yioutani-Iacovides. They learned about the different stages of construction of a Passivhaus building, and the construction of the concrete frame, such as: Falsework, formwork, shuttering, Steel reinforcement and post tensioning strands, Concrete pours, Core construction, etc. The visit was kindly facilitated by the construction managers at Eric and Wright and our colleague Nicola Harris, Senior Lecture at or University who introduced us to the project, and we are very grateful. The visit was very relevant to the curriculum of the Architectural Engineering modules in Years 1 and 2.

(Year 3) Students visited the Acoustics Labs (5th February) and Energy House 2 (12th February) as part of the Design Technology 3 curriculum. the visit organised by Dr Maria Yioutani-Iacovides and students were guided

by Dr Danile Wong-Mcsweeney and the research team to the Acoustic Research Centre, one of the largest in the World. They learned about current research and experienced the state-of the art facilities, including anechoic chambers. Students visited Energy House 2 facilities and learned about the research projects and their impact on improving our home’s energy efficiency. Michael Brown emphasised the research team’s work and the significance of their industry-focused approach.

Venturing into Birmingham’s urban fabric, students explored the dynamic interplay between heritage and innovation - core themes of their final design projects.

The visit to the iconic Birmingham Library demonstrated how civic architecture can be both poetic and purposeful, while the Jewellery Quarter revealed the rich potential of adaptive reuse within a layered industrial context.

This experience sharpened students’ understanding of spatial narratives, materiality, and urban regeneration - insights clearly evidenced in the evolution of their studio work.

Guest Lecture by Alexandra Fisher from Zaha Hadid Architet 8th October 3-4pm, 2024 Alexandra Fisher, Lead Architect at Zaha Hadid, presented two projects that she had worked as a lead project architect at Lead Architect at Zaha Hadid; Generali Tower in Milan and BEEAH Headquarters in Sharjah, UAE. Very different project that presented diverse challenges.

Generali Tower, a high-rise office building located the City Life Masterplan, a recently redeveloped area in Milan. ‘Inclined perimeter columns follow the twisting geometry of the tower to mirror the inclined alignment of its external façade untis’

BEEAH a low rise building in the middle of the desert in Sharjah UAE, ‘the latest milestone of the BEEAH Group…the design responds to its environment as a series of interconnecting dunes orientated and shaped to optimize local climatic conditions’. Guest Lecture Buro Happold-Battersea Power Station 19th November 2024, 3-4pm BURO HAPPOLD structural engineers Matt Duckett, and Azat Tatygulov shared their experiences working on the Adaptive reuse and Restoration of Battersea Power Station, London. The Grade II Listed landmark has been sympathetically restored and transformed a residential and retail hub. The restoration and adaptive reuse of the building followed a regeneration of the entire site. The successful engineers articulated the challenges in ensuring structural stability and integrity of the building, the multi-disciplinary engineering solutions and decisions. An awarded project unique in concept and implementation. This lecture was organised by Dr Maria Yioutani-Iacovides, Program Leader BSc Architectural Engineering and Hasna Abdo, L6 Architectural Engineering student.

The Salford Laboratory of Architecture in practice, exploring the cities The Architectural Design & Technology programme have been putting the ideas of the Salford Laboratory of Architecture to use by starting modules featuring the cities of Salford and Manchester out exploring the building and sites they cover. For example, the History of Architecture & Construction students, who select a Listed Salford structure as the subject of their assessments, spent the first session of that module examining several heritage buildings in the City, debating whether a building was listed or not, and the merits of this recognition.

Student Field Trips These local sites and projects were in addition to several field trips beyond Greater Manchester, including the annual Level 4 Liverpool walking tour with the obligatory student-being-devoured-by-door photo and an understanding of the development of a great port city, and the associations this had with complicated aspects of British history.

New sites for exploring module content from a different context included a Level 5 trip to the ‘Grandparent of Skyscrapers,’ the Shrewsbury Flax mill Maltings, on completion in 1797, the World’s first iron framed building. This visit allowed students to appreciate the impact of the Industrial Revolutions of the 1750s and 1850s on architecture and technology; events that changed the character of both Salford and Manchester.

The Level 6 students took a longer journey out to the groundbreaking Centre for Alternative Technologies in Machynlleth, exploring the development and application of sustainable building and system technologies in the built and natural environment. The application of several of these in their major final year projects was evidence of the benefits of these study trips, opportunities extended to all the SLAB programmes, with Architects, Architectural Engineers and Interior Architects joining all of these trips.

Programme of lunchtime Student Talks supported by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists North West A particular success for the ADT programme was a series of Student Talks with professionals from across the Built Environment sector, including Salford City Council’s Heritage Commission Coordinator Dr Joanne O’Hara, and several practitioners who some of the students’ secured placements with. The best attended of these was delivered by E3Cube, recently appointed the Equity Diversity & Inclusion Coordinators for the University estate, and Tarkett, a major European flooring manufacture. Their interactive session, titled: Inclusive Design & Neuro-Accessible Considerations explored an area of design and technology challenging on several levels but essential in a diverse world.

Engaging with University teams and facilities Finally, ADT students took advantage of the various facilities available on campus, including the Acoustics Laboratories, World-leading in their research, as well as more practical engagement. For example, our new Professional Model Maker Technician, Saul Parker-Backhouse created a beautiful set of giant blocks to allow Level 4 students to test out spanning and cantilevers in structures, as well as playing a very large game with them. The culmination of this on-campus work was working with colleagues and students in Computing and Gaming with Jo O’Hara of Salford City Council on a Heritage Gaming Jam, creating a virtual environment of Weaste Cemetery, Salford, to consider how immersive environments can be used to engage students, professionals and the public in saving Salford’s Listed buildings.
