The School of Education & Human Services (SEHS) at UM-Flint is known for its excellent academic programs in the realm of education and social work. We are in search of the next dean who will continue to maintain the consistent high level of quality, but who is a transformational leader, interdisciplinary collaborator, and exemplifies campus-community partnerships with key community stakeholders for the purpose of enhancing and expanding the potential of the School, its faculty, its scholarship and research footprint, student success, and the Flint community.

The SEHS student experience combines the rigors of a University of Michigan education with hands-on learning through mentoring and classroom placement for new teachers, as well as community outreach and engagement activities for future educators and social workers to develop experiential learning opportunities through service. This unique combination engages our students to have a truly comprehensive education, inside and outside of the classroom.

Flint and Genesee County is a welcoming place, where partnerships and collaboration abound. I recently joined UM-Flint as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. UM-Flint has exceeded my high expectations. The faculty are creative and considerate of their students, and their flexibility and innovation as they rethink teaching methods during the ongoing pandemic is inspiring. Our students deeply value their educational experiences, and enjoy the challenge of the various nursing curriculum. The staff are an amazing resource, helping faculty and students alike so that teaching and learning may be pursued freely. ABOUT UM-FLINT The University of Michigan-Flint serves approximately 6,800 students studying in one of the six colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, College of Health Sciences, School of Education and Human Services, School of Nursing, and the College of Innovation and Technology. UM-Flint offers degrees in more than 190 areas of study, including over 70 graduate programs.

The institution offers a strong mix of liberal arts and sciences, education, business, and health-related professional programs.This combination of high quality liberal arts and professional and graduate programs in an urban institution is unique and shapes the institution’s culture and opportunities.

The Flint campus is located about 60 miles from Ann Arbor and its sister campus in Dearborn. In response to urging by a broad base of community supporters, the campus was established in 1956 as the Flint College of the University of Michigan, a two-year upper-division institution intended to provide a high quality, low-cost liberal education to local students. It expanded gradually to take on a larger role, becoming a four-year regional campus in 1965. Being part of the University of Michigan was at the heart of the campus’ identity at the time of its founding, and continues to be so today.

The available space on campus has grown since 2014. In that time, UM-Flint has taken ownership of the Riverfront Residence Hall and Banquet Center, which added over 500 available beds in addition to those in the First Street Residence Hall, and a newly renovated conference center which is also the largest such space in the county. The expansion of the Murchie Science Building will provide state-of-the-art laboratories, student learning commons, and new faculty space to help deal with the 58% increase in STEM students in the last decade. WHY UM-FLINT? u The campus is one of three campuses of the legendary University of Michigan, the leading public university in the world. u In spite of the pandemic, UM-Flint is positioned for growth in enrollment, programs offered, and markets served in the future.

Facilities and resources are in place and the next five years will see a major transformation of the institution. u The connections to and partnerships with the community are strong. There are numerous examples of programs and activities involving students, faculty, and staff with the Flint community. u A diverse student body that enriches the classroom environment and campus life in general. Expectations for faculty include a blend of teaching excellence and scholarly and creative work, as well as service. u UM-Flint has over 80 articulation agreements with Michigan community colleges which allow a student to apply credits earned in specific programs toward a UM-Flint bachelor degree, many of which can be completed entirely online. u The Student Veterans Resources Center assists active duty service members, veterans, National Guard, reserve, spouses, and dependents with their educational needs from admission through graduation and our population of veterans has substantially increased over the years. u As a comprehensive regional campus of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint has a strong tradition of excellence in basic and applied research. u The university utilizes several delivery modes for offering its academic and non-credit programs including face-to-face, completely online, and blended courses including those with weekend residencies as well as dual enrollment programs with program offerings onsite at several of our neighboring school districts. u UM-Flint has partnered with area high schools and school districts to create innovative dual enrollment opportunities. Genesee County is also home to three major hospitals: Hurley Hospital, McLaren Regional Medical Center, and Ascension Genesys Hospital. The School of Nursing has collaborative partnerships with all three of these medical institutions, offering opportunities for students and faculty in the realms of learning, teaching, and scholarship.

SEHS INFORMATION Information about the School of Education & Human Services The University of Michigan-Flint is a regional campus of the University in an urban setting, with an enrollment of over 6,800 students.

Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered through our six schools/colleges. The College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Management, the College of Health Sciences, the School of Education & Human Services, the School of Nursing and the College of Innovation & Technology. The University of Michigan-Flint offers degrees in 198 areas of study, including 74 graduate programs. The combination of high-quality liberal arts and professional and graduate programs in an urban institution is unique and shapes the institution’s culture and opportunities.

With approximately 500 faculty and 440 staff, the University is advancing its mission in implementing a strategic plan that emphasizes stabilizing and regaining enrollment, improving student success and retention, building of resources to support growth, and increased engagement of students and faculty in experimental learning, research, and interdisciplinary programs.

SEHS prepares students with engaged learning experiences to give them first-hand practice before entering the job market. From field experiences for social work students to student teaching opportunities for future educators, the commitment goes beyond the classroom to transform lives and communities.

Notable Achievements

• Established a virtual teachers lounge providing continued engagement with the School’s alumni community

• The Early Childhood Development Center continues to sponsor campus and community events which showcase how children explore their learning environment. This includes a “Night Out on the Campus” and visits to the Flint Farmers’ Market to help children establish grocery lists for snack and cooking projects

• The Social Work Department was actively involved in the development of the Wolverine Food Den on camp.

• The Center for Educator Preparation established and fostered a consortium with nine PK-12 districts/schools to establish a collaborative PK-20 system focusing on the educational needs of the Greater Flint community.

• The Social Work Department was accredited by Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 2018 (until June 2026).

• The Social Work Department has been responsive to the Flint Water Crisis in hardest hit neighborhoods by partnering with the Urban Renaissance Center, the North Flint Neighborhood Action Council and the R. L. Jones Community Outreach Center.

Job Summary The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking an innovative and transformative leader to become our next School of Education & Human Services Dean. The School of Education & Human Services (SEHS) is comprised of the Education Department, the Social Work Department, the Center for Educator Preparation, and the Early Childhood Development Center. The Dean will collaborate with the faculty, staff, and students to articulate a shared vision as the School continues to advance in education and social work through the preparation of teachers, social workers and leaders and a commitment to the well-being of the community. Serving as the chief academic and administrative officer in SEHS, the Dean will lead the School in advancing its core commitments, partnering with its stakeholders, and by defining the future of the School’s programs and scholarship activity, education, practice, and service.

As part of the strategic vision for the future, the Dean will be responsible for a clear plan of advancing student recruitment, retention, and graduation success for the School. The Dean also provides oversight to the Center for Educator Preparation and the Early Childhood Development Center.

Job Responsibilities The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and will have the following goals and responsibilities:

• Provide leadership for academic management that ensures efficient course offerings, effective program advising, high levels of student retention, and timely completion of degrees • Provide leadership for the Center for Educator Preparation and the Early Childhood Development Center • Advance the vision, mission, and core values of the School of Education and Human Services and UM-Flint • Mentor, promote, and advance research/scholarship and grant writing • Build on and sustain strong partnership collaborations with the Flint community and with Flint educational and business partners who are committed to strengthening the community and growing leaders in our community • Develop and enhance beneficial fundraising relationships with individuals, foundations, corporations, and local, state, and federal government agencies • Develop and implement strategic plans for expansion by building on and enhancing existing programs and strengthen the curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels • Collaborate with the executive officers of the University and other academic and clinical leaders to promote interprofessional, interdisciplinary, and inter-institutional partnerships • Develop external relationships and fund development opportunities for the School and its academic programs in collaboration with the Office of Research and Economic Development • Regularly assess develop and improve all School programs • Maintain accreditation standards and ensure that programs adhere to University, state, and federal regulations • Oversee and monitor all accreditation processes for the School • Actively participate in community activities, increase the School’s visibility to its communities of interest, and represent the School at key meetings and conferences • Develop, support, and maintain faculty, staff, student, and alumni relationships and partnerships • Provide strong leadership, oversight, and guidance in all aspects of the School’s educational programs, research endeavors, community outreach, and service programs; encourage effective collaborative relationships; and foster excellence in teaching, research, and service • Develop the curriculum and programs necessary to meet the needs of the community, students, and region as well as the emerging needs of education and social work.

Required Qualifications Qualifications include an earned doctorate in education, social work, or related field from an accredited institution; academic and experiential qualifications to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes for the School; a distinguished record of academic leadership and accomplishment in teaching, scholarship, and service at the college or university level. Candidates must possess a record as a teacher and scholar commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in the SEHS at UM-Flint. Candidates should be passionate advocates for education and social work; academic leaders with a track record of effective academic and administrative experiences; and visionary and strategic thinkers who can demonstrate collaboration and administrative accomplishment.

Additional specific qualifications include:
