The Thompson Library is a crucial gathering space both on campus and online, and must have a leader who understands the vital importance of the user experience. I recently celebrated my one year anniversary at UM-Flint as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. This outstanding university has exceeded my high expectations. The faculty are creative and considerate of their students, and their flexibility and innovation as they rethink teaching methods during the ongoing pandemic is inspiring. Our students deeply value their educational experiences. The staff are an amazing resource, helping faculty and students alike so that teaching and learning may be pursued freely. We have outstanding partners in Flint, and they are deeply invested in the success of our students and the communities they will serve.

ABOUT UM-FLINT The University of Michigan-Flint serves approximately 6,400 students across six colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Management, the College of Health Sciences, the School of Education and Human Services, the School of Nursing, and the College of Innovation and Technology. UM-Flint offers degrees in more than 190 areas of study, including over 60 graduate programs.

The institution offers a strong mix of liberal arts and sciences, education, business, and health-related professional programs. This combination of high quality liberal arts and professional and graduate programs in an urban institution is unique and shapes the institution’s culture and opportunities.

The Flint campus is located about 60 miles from Ann Arbor and its sister campus in Dearborn. In response to urging by a broad base of community supporters, the campus was established in 1956 as the Flint College of the University of Michigan, a two-year upper-division institution intended to provide a high quality, low-cost liberal education to local students. It expanded gradually to take on a larger role, becoming a four-year regional campus in 1965. Being part of the University of Michigan was at the heart of the campus’ identity at the time of its founding, and continues to be so today.

The available space on campus has grown since 2014. In that time, UM-Flint has taken ownership of the Riverfront Residence Hall and Conference Center, which added over 500 available beds in addition to those in the First Street Residence Hall. The The Riverfront Center is also home to the county’s largest event space, which is newly renovated and can accommodate large-scale recruitment, academic and community events. The new expansion of the Murchie Science Building provides state-of-the-art laboratories, student learning commons, and new faculty space to accommodate the 58% increase in STEM students in the last decade.

WHY UM-FLINT? u The campus is one of three campuses of the legendary University of Michigan, the leading public university in the world. u In spite of the pandemic, UM-Flint is positioned for growth in enrollment, programs offered, and markets served in the future.

Facilities and resources are in place, and the next five years will see a major transformation of the institution. u The connections to and partnerships with the community are strong. There are numerous examples of programs and activities involving students, faculty, and staff with the Flint community. u A diverse student body that enriches the classroom environment and campus life in general. There is a widespread and genuine belief that a mix of traditional and non-traditional students produces a vibrant and exciting educational experience. u UM-Flint is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is classified Doctoral/Professional in the Carnegie Classification and is amongst the select group of community-engaged institutions. u Graduate programs are growing and graduate students successfully compete with graduate students from Big Ten universities.

Expectations for faculty include a blend of teaching excellence and scholarly and creative work, as well as service. u UM-Flint has over 80 articulation agreements with Michigan community colleges which allow a student to apply credits earned in specific programs toward a UM-Flint bachelor degree, many of which can be completed entirely online. u The Student Veterans Resources Center assists active duty service members, veterans, National Guard, reserve, spouses, and dependents with their educational needs from admission through graduation, and our population of veterans has substantially increased over the years. u As a comprehensive regional campus of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint has a strong tradition of excellence in basic and applied research. u The university utilizes several delivery modes for offering its academic and non-credit programs including face-to-face, completely online, and blended courses including those with weekend residencies as well as dual enrollment programs with program offerings onsite at several of our neighboring school districts. u UM-Flint has partnered with area high schools and school districts to create innovative dual enrollment opportunities. Both the Early College and Dual Enrollment Education Partnership (DEEP) initiative offer high school students the chance to experience college and earn college credits.

Flint’s Bishop Airport connects directly to several hubs across the country, including Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

We’re also conveniently located about an hour from Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Detroit, MI. That means access to even more restaurants, theaters, and nightlife.

Genesee County is also home to three major hospitals: Hurley Hospital, McLaren Regional Medical Center, and Ascension Genesys Hospital. The School of Nursing has collaborative partnerships with all three of these medical institutions, offering opportunities for students and faculty in the realms of learning, teaching, and scholarship.

Job Summary The University of Michigan-Flint seeks an experienced and visionary leader to serve as Director of its Frances Willson Thompson Library. Reporting to the Provost, the Director will be a principal member of the Provost’s leadership team, setting the strategic direction for 21st century library services and support for student learning and faculty teaching and scholarship to our campus community and beyond. This exceptional leader must embrace the University of Michigan-Flint’s vision: “Engaging minds, preparing leaders through academic excellence, student centeredness, and engaged citizenship” in every aspect of their leadership and actions.

The University of Michigan-Flint celebrates its 65th anniversary in September 2021, and was the first University of Michigan campus to be located outside of Ann Arbor. With six colleges and schools, including the new College of Innovation & Technology that launches this fall, UM-Flint proudly serves over 6,800 students, offering nearly 200 areas of study, and 74 graduate programs including 19 doctoral and Ph.D. programs. The University has a diverse array of challenging academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences, education, health care, and business. The academic campus community is comprised of over 500 faculty and over 400 staff members.

The Director will be responsible for transforming UM-Flint’s library into a state-of the-art technology driven center which expands beyond the traditional in its delivery of services. In addition, the director must be a collaborator who engages others and seeks to fully understand the needs of our students, faculty, and community. The Director must be willing to build and sustain relationships, and seek funding through creative and innovative ways.

Job Responsibilities Some of the specific responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following: • Lead the development and implementation of a shared vision for the Library that embraces technology and state of the art library concepts.

• Sustain and build strong relationships across disciplines, departments and University of Michigan campuses to develop partnerships, share resources, and collaborate on projects.

• Facilitate the creation of innovative programs and flexible environments.

• Provide effective and collaborative oversight of the Library’s budget, space, and staff.

• Represent the Library on campus university governance committees and relevant groups.

• Develop, implement, and evaluate library policies and procedures.

• Contribute to a culture of high performance by modeling and promoting effective collaboration among team members, creating a trusting environment, and supporting appropriate staff development opportunities.

POSITION SUMMARY Required Qualifications • Master’s degree in Library, Information Science or relevant field from an ALA-accredited program.

• Demonstrated record of successful academic library supervisor/leadership experience of 5 years or more.

• Work experience leading technology or academic collaborations.

• Experience in budget and personnel management, and demonstrated knowledge of electronic information resources and the application of emerging technologies in academic library environments.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and community members.

• Proven keen analytical skills and a commitment to collaborative decision-making.

• Demonstrated managerial leadership in recruiting, supervising, and developing a high functioning and collaborative work team.

• Demonstrated ability to formulate strategic plans, implement programs, and evaluate the success of these initiatives.
