With our newly established College of Innovation & Technology (CIT), we are in search of a new dean to lead this exciting new addition to Academic Affair at UM-Flint. The ideal candidate will adhere to our consistently high level of quality. This individual must be a transformative, innovative leader and collaborator who will enhance and expand the potential of the new College, hire faculty, develop a culture of scholarship, and build an environment that is conducive to student success.

Candidates must be a tenured full professor in a STEM discipline at UM-Flint and meet the required qualifications listed below for consideration. Job Summary The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a founding dean for the newly established College of Innovation & Technology (CIT). The Dean will collaborate with the UM-Flint faculty, staff, and senior leadership to develop a shared vision for the College. Serving as the chief academic and administrative officer of the CIT, the Dean will define the future of technology education and practice and establish strong relations with industry and Flint community. As part of the vision, the Dean will also be responsible for advancing student recruitment, retention, and graduation success for the College.

This dean appointment will be for a fixed and non-renewable term of three years. Since the launch date for this College is set to matriculate the first cohort of students in the fall semester of 2021, UM-Flint is utilizing an internal search and search advisory committee process. A national search will be conducted in academic year 2022-23 to select the next dean.

Information about the College of Innovation & Technology The College of Innovation & Technology will enhance the standing of UM-Flint and address identified needs within the higher education system and industry in the state of Michigan. With a focus on professional-general engineering education, coupled with a student-centered educational approach to produce job-ready graduates, the CIT will uniquely identify UM-Flint within the 15 public universities in the state of Michigan. As described in the prospectus the educational focus of the new College will be on creating “T-shaped” individuals: liberally educated technology professionals who graduate highly prepared to enter the job market. Graduates will gain deep and relevant experience through work-to-learn and other innovative approaches to teaching and learning, while simultaneously being grounded in the important underlying competencies of a traditional liberal education: analytical reasoning, effective communication, critical thinking, collaboration, cultural awareness, and self-directed learning, while maintaining a strong focus on innovation.

During the establishment of the College, it will be necessary for the dean to create and/or enhance existing STEM laboratories with more equipment to offer the planned curricula. It is expected that the new College will welcome the first students in fall 2021.

During the fall and winter semesters of the current (2020-21) academic year, the founding dean will work with existing faculty in STEM disciplines to develop curricula and implement laboratories.

Responsibilities The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and will have the following duties and responsibilities.

• Develop the vision, mission, and core values of the College of Innovation & Technology • Lead the curriculum development for the initial majors to matriculate the first cohort of students in fall 2021.

• Establish plans for effective program advising, high levels of student retention, and timely completion of degrees • Develop a 5-yr plan for faculty hiring and oversee the hiring of the first two cohorts • Establish the Steering Committee (internal) and the Industrial Advisory Board (external) • Work with the Steering Committee and Industrial Advisory Board to develop programs and curricula necessary to position the CIT as an innovative and industry relevant college in the nation • Develop external relationships and fund development opportunities for the School and its academic programs in collaboration with the Office of Research and Economic Development

• Develop and implement collaborative relationships with the existing schools and colleges • Foster an environment within the CIT that supports creativity, innovation, inclusivity, and scholarly productivity that reflects the University of Michigan’s tradition of excellence in a regional campus • Develop plans for the accreditation of CIT programs to be executed within 5 years • Develop plans to increase CIT’s visibility to its communities of interest, and represent the CIT at key meetings and conferences • Provide strong leadership, oversight and guidance in all aspects of the CIT’s educational programs, research endeavors, and budgetary matters • Engage the Industrial Advisory Board and existing STEM faculty to develop plans for student recruitment, retention and success, upskilling regional workforce, while providing academic excellence in face-to-face and distance education.

Required Qualifications Qualifications include an earned doctorate in a STEM field from an accredited institution; academic and experiential qualifications to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes for the startup of a new College; a distinguished record of academic leadership and accomplishment in teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates must be a tenured full professor in a STEM discipline at UM-Flint with a minimum of three years’ experience, preferably five, as a department chair, academic program director and/or associate dean.

Candidates should possess a track record of effective academic and administrative experience, be a visionary and strategic thinker with demonstrated ability for collaboration and administrative accomplishment. Specific qualifications include:

• Experience in leadership roles as department chair, academic program director, associate dean or dean • Demonstrated excellence as a faculty with a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service • Ability to develop and convey a clear vision for the College of Innovation and Technology • Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem solving skills necessary for establishing a new college, including academic units, from the ground up • Experience with fiscal and personnel management • Demonstrated experience with successfully developing and managing budgets • Substantial accomplishments in both student recruitment and academic success • Commitment to shared decision-making and governance • Excellence in written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills that promotes dialogue with faculty, staff, students, and the industry • Demonstrated ability to bring together a diverse group of faculty and staff and to lead them in a manner consistent with the principles of shared governance • Commitment to cultural diversity, equity and inclusion • The ability to exercise intellectual leadership, inspire a strong sense of collaboration with UM-Flint faculty, staff and students and the new College, and with industrial partners • Understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the changing landscape of higher education and the role of technology education
