Our Impact

UEL is committed to producing research that makes a difference. We align our work with real-world challenges to become a leading modern research university. Our research has already made a measurable impact—reaching over 50,000 early years practitioners across 2,000 primary schools, significantly improving early childhood education environments.

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, UEL saw a 54 per cent increase in recognised research outputs since 2014—rising from 350 to 538—highlighting our growing strength as a research institution.

Many of our research initiatives are rooted in civic engagement, actively collaborating with community-based projects to address social needs and create shared value. We are also pioneers in emerging technologies, with several of our research projects receiving ‘excellent’ ratings from the European Commission.

Our impact is both local and global. We are working with partners across the world to tackle major challenges—whether it’s reducing health inequalities, promoting sustainable infrastructure, or unlocking the potential of artificial intelligence.

Our Vibrant Campuses

We’re one of the only universities in London with a self-contained campus, yet our closeknit community feel extends across all our sites throughout east London. Uniquely situated in this booming, diverse, and fast-growing region, we offer students incredible opportunities alongside excellent transport links across the city and beyond. Step outside our campuses, and you’ll find yourself in one of the most multicultural and exciting areas of London—an inspiring place for career development, life experiences, and connecting with extraordinary people.

Check out what east London has to offer.

Docklands

Jump off the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and you’re only steps away from our beautiful waterfront campus, home to many of our students. You’ll study in stunning surroundings and always be close to the opportunities central London offers such as The Royal Drawing School at Trinity Buoy Wharf, the O2 Arena, and ExCel London. We run free buses to our Stratford campus to provide you with easy access to lectures. As a postgraduate student, you'll enjoy access to our exceptional facilities, including the £21 million SportsDock, the Way Out East Gallery, the Children’s Garden Nursery, various cafes, the 24/7 library, and more.

USS

University Square Stratford (USS) is one of London’s most modern and well-equipped campuses. It is home to our performing arts courses, The Source, and our business, law and criminology courses. Our innovative Legal Advice Centre offers students valuable opportunities to gain experience and develop legal skills. We provide a free legal advice service to the community, which is delivered by university students under the supervision of experienced practicing solicitors.

We’ve invested £33 million in facilities, including a student centre and help desk, specialist dance and performing arts spaces, a Harvard lecture theatre, and a mock courtroom designed to provide practical experience by replicating a real-world legal environment.

Stratford

Stratford Campus is one of UEL’s most accessible locations, just minutes from the town centre and major transport links. It’s a key hub for health, education and social sciences, home to specialist schools and hands-on learning environments.

Facilities include a fully equipped Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub, modern labs, VR tools, a library, and student spaces like cafés and study zones.

Looking ahead, the new Health Campus development will bring cutting-edge teaching facilities, a wellness centre and student accommodation — built to support future health leaders.

Affordable Accommodation

Our accommodation is divided into the West Student Village and the East Student Village. With a range of premium, standard and wheelchair accessible spaces, you can find a home that matches your budget and needs. Every room on campus is single occupancy and en-suite, meaning you will have your own private bathroom no matter where on campus you live.

Our waterside campus accommodation is close to everything the local area has to offer. Hop between campuses with our free bus service or head into central London on the DLR.

Testimonials

Tripti Someshwar Special and Additional Learning Needs (ICEPE) MA

Relocating to a new city led Tripti to discover a deep passion for special education, which transformed her career path. After volunteering at a special needs school, she was inspired by the resilience of the children and pursued training in special education. Over the years, she gained experience across cities and educational settings.

A turning point came during her master’s at the University of East London. Her dissertation explored the challenges neurodivergent students face transitioning to higher education, particularly in India, where resources are more limited than in the UK. This insight deepened her resolve to create meaningful change.

Today, Tripti is the founder of Vision Board Projects, an initiative empowering neurodivergent youth. From college readiness to recreational centres, it tackles the unique barriers this community faces. Her work has led to remarkable outcomes, including one student who, though nonverbal, now works as an editor for an online disability magazine.

“My time at UEL gave me more than a degree—it gave me clarity, confidence, and the academic grounding to lead meaningful change. The research I carried out there became the blueprint for the work I do today.”

Jackson Brooks MSc Sport Analytics

Jackson Brooks pivoted his career from finance to football analytics, following his passion for the sport.

After earning a degree in economics and econometrics, he pursued an MSc in Sports Analytics at UEL, graduating with a distinction in August 2023. His expertise quickly secured him a position as a Match Analyst at Football Radar, a leading football data organisation.

Jackson has since secured a promotion to Lead Analyst at Football Radar.

“There are lots of extra opportunities available throughout the course, such as presenting to the sports science department at Chelsea Football Club, and securing a certificate from Catapult for using their GPS tracker systems. I have now secured a job that I love, which I definitely couldn’t have secured without the skills that I learnt on the course and from my lecturers.”
