Lucky number three.

Three dates later, I had to admit that maybe I was starting to like Grant. He wasn’t like all of the guys that I was in college with. Grant was… older, more grown up. Not only did he pull out chairs for me at restaurants but he opened the car door for me before I got in or out of the car. My mother warned me not to fall for these tactics – all guys are charming in the beginning but just wait. Down the line they all get lazy, she warned.

young and vibrant with the healthiest and strongest body imaginable. I was merely weeks away from graduating college. I had men falling at my feet and asking me out daily. I had great friends, great roommates, and an abundance of self-confidence. I also had something else, something that unfortunately got me into a little bit of trouble. Because of my sheltered upbringing and being such a late bloomer, determined not to follow the crowd… I was filled with innocence and trust. Innocence and trust that would eventually fail me in ways I never could have imagined.

Having three dates under our figurative belts, Grant invited me Be sure to read the next edition of UNITED for more of Sex over to his house to watch a movie with him. Yes, yes, yes...the end of the year is here. ‘Tis the time to reflect on the past year and hope we learned our lessons well and plan for the year ahead. To me, it’s almost like a cleansing experience, a time to begin again. It’s also a time to forgive and try to forget the people or incidents that might have hurt you in the past year and begin the year on a good and civil note. It’s been a huge year locally and nationally: new president, new policies and new agendas. 2010 is also looking to be a big year; we have some elections coming up. I think it’s important to make your voice heard whatever it may be. I hope you, like me, see the importance of educating people and the need of getting people involved and registered to vote. So, my challenge is to get 10 people to register to vote for the 2010 elections. I challenge you to find 10 people in your community and aid them in the process of registering to vote. You’ll be surprised how many people are not active voters. It’s a right and a privilege we have as Americans and it should be exercised by all citizens, as many people have given their lives to allow us to have it. I’m also very excited about the merge between the Colusa County Chamber, EDC and the Business & Visitor’s Center. I’ve been a member of Colusa Chamber for almost two years now. I was also very humbled and honored to hear last week that I had been nominated to the board of directors. This is the second year I’ve been nominated. I believe my experience as part of the executive board of the North Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will allow me to bring a vast knowledge to the table. I, like many others, have seen what has unfolded with the Colusa Chamber in the past couple of months and the scrutiny the current board has been under. While I might not know some of the members

Contact luis barrera at luis@luisbarrera.com on a personal level, I sympathize with all. I personally know the feeling of being judged from others who may not know me personally and who just have heard things about me and have been quick to pass judgment on me as a person by what they think are facts. To some, it might be hard to believe this, but I truly believe that deep down every person on that board did as best of a job as they could have done. It’s hard at times feeling the weight of the organization on your shoulders and feeling like there is no one there to help. You make quick decisions that are innocent at heart but once you take a step back they might look different to others. While some people may not agree with some of the decisions or ways of execution, I know that each one of those board members cared about their community. I wish them all the best and hope people can realize how hard it is to volunteer for a non-profit organization and all the time and energy that goes with it. I also hope more members volunteer this year. I would like to recommend to further boards to actively pursue the idea of committees. This will allow more people to get involved and volunteer on a limited basis. We have a lot of talented people who I know would volunteer an hour or so a month to help the chamber in a committee. I would also like to see the formation of a non-profit forum for all non-profit organizations to come together on a quarterly basis and allow each other to be aware of the other’s events for the year. We need to realize that our community is too small to work independently from one another and that at the end of the day we all want to improve our community. There are strengths in numbers and UNITED we can accomplish a lot more and achieve better results. I hope you have a great 2010 full of health, happiness and prosperity.

Supervisor Tommy Indrieri & Family Water Alliance’s Ashley Indrieri By Kathy Craigo - Special to United

© 2009 Luis Barrera Photography Design

© 2009 Luis Barrera Photography Design Tom and Ashley Indrieri might be known as a ‘power couple’ if they were in Hollywood. The attractive duo are familiar faces in almost every arena in Colusa County and are also recognized in State political circles as well, but they are nearly ‘famous’ in Colusa County for the catering job they do. Along with Tom’s son Quinten Indrieri, an 8th grade student at Maxwell High School, the couple has made a great reputation as top notch caterers. Tom is the first person to say that he couldn’t have accomplished what he has created without Ashley and Quinten working by his side. “My mother-in-law Dare Emery has also always been there when we needed her,” he said. He added that working together has been the key. “It is a great to spend time together,” he said. Tom was born and raised in Colusa County and Ashley moved to the county about four years ago. The couple is a good match in that they are both devoted to preserving the lifestyle provided in the county. “We believe we need to protect our way of life here in Colusa County. I do it as a Colusa County Supervisor and Ashley does it at her job as Executive Director of the Family Water Alliance (FWA). As executive director of FWA Ashley advocates for water rights,

private property rights and the sustainability of agriculture,” said Tom Indrieri. Tom is District II Colusa County Supervisor; he volunteers for numerous countywide organizations including the Colusa Lions Club and previously served as chairman of the Williams Pioneer Day more than six years and was a past president of Colusa Chamber of Commerce and the Williams Civic Association for many years. Ashley serves on the Colusa Rotary Club board, Omega Nu, Colusa Republican Party and California Alliance to Protect Private Property Rights. Together with Quinten, the couple makes their home in Colusa and they work together catering innumerable dinners and events in the county through the family business; Tommy’s Catering. Tom said the thing he likes most about being a supervisor is the opportunity it affords him to advocate for the citizens of Colusa County. “I like being able to make a difference that helps ensure the quality of life we all love here in Colusa County,” he said. Tom commented that he has always loved food service and that he is trained as a chef. Now he has been given an opportunity use his culinary talents to complement the menus of a landmark eatery here. In October, he merged his catering business with Louis Cairo’s in

Williams. “Cairo’s has been famous for its Louie Bread and hand trimmed steaks for more than 60 years,” he said. “I am very excited to be running the catering division at Cairo’s and adding a little bit of a BBQ flare to an already great menu,” he added. “Our customers can be assured that we can cater an elegant wedding or a backyard BBQ with equal style and capability.” Tom is passionate about the food he prepares. He said he likes to cook a lot of things, but his favorite is his signature ‘fall-off-thebone’ barbecue. He said he has a lot of things he likes about his job, but one of the best things about catering is serving people great food and sometimes preparing and serving the food in a challenging and remote location. “I like the challenge, the creativity and the people you meet,” he said. Tom has a lot of ambitions in his life. It may surprise some folks to know that he’d like to be a chef at Caesar’s Palace or to be the fifth member of the rock band KISS. Tom, Ashley and Quinten have goals for the catering business. “Honestly, I hope to have a long relationship and career with Cairo’s. “We are hoping to stay busy catering twelve months out of the year. “We always want people to know there is no catering job too big or too small,” he said.

Touch of Health (530) 933-3933 430 Market St., Suite E Colusa Ca, One of the most amazing experiences in a women’s life is that of experiencing the beauty in becoming pregnant. On this journey the body changes in so many ways. Though some of these changes are quite wonderful there are others that can leave the mother feeling quite uncomfortable. So how can one find a degree of relief from common discomforts. Many new moms are nervous about pursuing massage therapy during pregnancy. I hope to provide information that may help shed some light on the benefits of Pre-Natal massage. A Pre-Natal massage won’t just relax you, it can also increase your energy level and relieve discomfort from the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy. An aching back, hips, and legs; nausea; insomnia; headaches; swollen feet; and unpredictable hormones are all a part of a normal pregnancy. However, many women have discovered a way to ease some of the discomfort associated with pregnancy and even improve their labor and delivery. When you are pregnant, your skeletal structure supports an increasing amount of weight, your organs shift to accommodate the baby, and you go through significant emotional and psychological changes. A massage therapist certified in prenatal massage is trained to

manipulate those muscles most affected by these changes to help alleviate some of the discomfort, and the relaxation can help ease your emotional rollercoaster. A pre-natal massage will be done in a side-lying position with pillows and bolsters carefully place to make sure you are extremely comfortable. Seated massage is also another alternative, if lying down is uncomfortable. Seeking such treatment does not have to end once the new baby enters the world. You may choose to continue with Post-Natal Massage. This helps speed up the post-pregnancy healing process by increasing circulation and aiding in the stabilization of hormonal activity. Light, gentle stroking motions increase circulation, eliminate toxins and help reduce post-delivery swelling. Post-natal massage therapy can be a wonderful way for a new mother to cope with all the changes she is going through both emotionally and physically. There is a tremendous shift that happens hormonally after the birth of the baby, which can leave mom feeling emotional highs and lows, like elation, irritability, and anxiety. If you are pregnant and interested in pre/post natal massage. Please contact Wendy (certified in pre/post natal massage)

Some people call them “Twi-hards,” others “Twilighters;” but at the end of the night the only thing that matters to them is whether they are “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob”. That’s right, I’m talking about “Twilight” fans. Colusa had its share of the vampire-driven global explosion that so far has grossed over $250 million. On the evening of the premiere, local fans lined up outside Colusa’s historic theater as early as 6:00 p.m. for a seat at the midnight show. As the crowds grew larger, it was evident that it wasn’t just teenage girls anxious to see Taylor Lautner’s new sculpted, shirtless body. “I’m here with my daughter,” said first-in-line Rebecca Velazquez, who along with her daughter, Kourtney, had been waiting since 6:00 p.m. that night. Rebecca said she comes to the Colusa Theater because it’s convenient and it’s a friendly family environment. She added that working graveyards makes it hard to spend time with her family, and “this gives us an apportunity to do something together as a family.” This Team Edward mom and daughter duo live in Princeton and said the drive to Colusa is much easier to them than the drive to Chico. “We also like to support our local theater, it’s just a very special place,” Velazquez said. The second-in-line team, also Edward fans, was also a family crew. Logan Fitzsimnons and his mom Kalya had been in line since 7:00 p.m. along with family friends Brenda Marfil and daughter Shanta. “They were sold out everywhere else” said from left to right: Brenda and daughter Shanta marfil, Kayla and son

Year ago, I opened Grandma’s Christmas decoration box. Staring back at me were many special ornaments. They were made from all sorts of shapes and material. This was the start of a special quest of Santa ornament searches. In later years I found I was not alone in my intrigue. Throughout the years, ornament collection has been very special to thousands of collectors. It is said there were more than 5,000 ornaments made between 1830 and 1939. The use of using greenery for celebration goes back to the Egyptians. And most religions have a special tree connection such as the Norse. Their tree is the ash. The Druids have the oak. Romans love the holly or mistletoe and several more. They loved their trees. And they all decorated them in some manner. In 1880 angel hair hit the market and we’ve been itching ever since. In 1882 a colleague of Thomas Edison electrically lit the first Christmas tree. Christmas became a legal holiday around 1890. But in 1892 when ornament hooks were invented, trees really began to sparkle! The Cleveland Administration electrified the first White House tree in 1895. Conservation concerns arose in 1900 and the first tree farm was established in New Jersey. By 1920, 5 million trees were exported from Vermont alone. In 1913 the metal cap for tree ornaments were invented. The first dripless candle was marketed by Standard Oil Company. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1938. They were crudely made compared to German made ornaments. But they have remained the most famous of American figurals. The 1960’s saw the rotating silver trees hit the market with a color wheel. It was popular to have all the lights the same color. This was the time many old ornaments were taken to the trash and dumped. I remember doing that! In the 70 and 80’s country style trees were decorated with crafts. Wooden cut outs and decoupage’ glue was in every house hold. Stuffed dolls, gingham bows had no resemblance to the true tree of the period. But, time changes many things. This year, enjoy your tree, no matter how it’s decorated or where you are; If it’s a foot tall, on a helicopter in the blasting heat of sand or if you’re sitting peacefully warm and watching the flow of the Sacramento. Just feel the gift of celebration.

By Kay Hosmer of Picket Fence Antiques ence in the prices they demand. A collector develops a kind of “sixth sense” that helps determine what is old or new. However there are indicators which can assist you in developing your knowledge. Then, proceed with caution. Weight of the glass: Probably the single most noticeable difference between old and new is the weight of the ornament. Old ornaments are thin, light weight and blown from a thin walled glass tube. After the war, the glass was thicker & stronger. It is heavier and often feels like plastic. Methods of hanging: Many methods of hanging were applied in old ornaments. The older ones could have string or crinkle wire. New caps usually have a spring wire or gold foil with a stamped design. Taste it: A more unusual method to tell old ornaments is to taste them. I have no idea why but the old ones have a salty taste. It could be the result of the body salts accumulated from years of handling. But for whatever reason new ornaments do not have the same taste. Price: Every year, popularity changes the prices on collectables and antiques. No one is perfect when predicting what sells year to year. What does reflect is rarity, popularity, variations, age and condition. When comparing a known brand vs. an off market brand the popular brand will always out sell the less known item. Repairs: Repairs to such fragile items usually lower the cost of fine ornaments. However, in unpacking great grandmas’ ornaments and you find the prized tree top has been broken and it appears repairable, do so. A fine repair is worth the price but a buyer will be reluctant to purchase ornaments which show poor repair jobs,

Cleaning: The white spray-on snow of terror hit in the 50’s and 60’s. If you haven’t thrown your speckled ones away by now here’s a possible solution. Photographer’s film cleaner used in very small amounts will remove the white blobs. Do not rub, let it evaporate or it will remove the lacquer. When Old or New? Grandma’s Victorian Christmas tree Ornaments dry, brush it with a soft brush and repeat as needed. Good have brought copies and reproductions onto the market for luck. And happy holidays! many years. Old ornaments are those made before World War For a vintage Christmas visit II started in Europe in 1939. New ornaments are those made picket fence antiques at after the war, from the late 1940s and present. Some argue that the 40’s and 50’s are old.
