What a great edition we have this month. It goes without saying that it’s a true honor for Q Sacramento Magazine to have Terry Sidie as our feature for this month. I have known Mr. Sidie for a few months and all I can say is that he’s a very involved individual not only in his entertainment venues but also in the community. Having established Faces Night Club twenty seven years ago has paved the way for many other LGBT businesses to be established openly in Sacramento - such as Q Sacramento and The Luis Barrera Studio. Also in this month’s edition is Artist Jason Thorpe, who is one of Sacramento’s best and creative artist. Jason’s lively art style has received

great reviews across the area. This month we are also pleased to showcase a truly international DJane. DJ Rossana is one of Mexico’s hottest export and she’s spinning her way into Rainbow’s Fest Latin Stage this Labor Day weekend. We hope everyone has a fabulous month and have a safe and fun Rainbow Fest! Hope to see you all out there. Also don’t forget to ‘like’ us on facebook. Sincerely,

Jason Thorpe creative & Fun Jason Thorpe fuses together his love for the past and experience of today to create colorful, lively, and often humorous portraits of everyday people experiencing everyday life. Influenced by both old and new, the original and the remake, Frank Sinatra and Brad Pitt, Jason’s art has come to a place of its own. And with every carefully guided brushstroke he creates a mood or an atmosphere, but not just any atmosphere…one that speaks to the viewer personally. Maybe it’s a memory of last Friday night with all your friends or a dream you’ve lived a thousand times. Or maybe a moment when you were all alone, doing what you love…either way it’s life – your life – on canvas. Our lives together; a place where we can all have one hell of a time. So whether you’re rich or poor, famous or not so much, you will find your place in Jason’s world. As much a self-taught artist as one can be, Jason Thorpe has learned, since he began painting in 2006, to trust in his style and his techniques. Coming from a childhood that included many drawings, he has taken that same youthful passion and turned it into a career he not only loves, but has found success in. His night-life and music scenes speak to the heart of not only his but any generation, appealing to mass audiences and evoking a playful emotion from all viewers. Jason was born in Heerlen, Holland on January 15, 1983 to Victor and Kathi Thorpe. From there they moved to Sacramento, California where his father was stationed at Mather Air Force Base. Jason has lived the vast majority of his life in the Sacramento area. The path that led him to painting began as he stared, mesmerized at a picture of Michelangelo’s famous fresco, “Creation of Adam”. Something in that famous image ignited a passion to create within him. He was moved to recreate Michelangelo’s most famous work, a task that would eventually take him over a month and nearly 70 hours to complete! After being laid-off from his fulltime job shortly after, he was determined to learn what it took

to become a successful artist. With little painting experience and even less direction, he began brainstorming and sketching, EVERYTHING!

He humbly began his journey with a donated box of paints and brushes, three canvas boards, and no easel. Along with some much needed help and encouragement from fellow Sacramento artist, David Garibaldi. His first paintings were to say the least, rough, but every one a stepping stone to the next, better painting. After 2 years of dabbling in every style you can imagine, it was the figurative works of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and others that really grabbed his attention and focus. He began to see the activities of the world around him as cropped pictures just waiting to be painted. Any scene, any scenario becoming his inspiration. That is what you will find in his work; a moment taken from our world, cropped and carefully applied to canvas with acrylic paint. And although he still considers most paintings to be experiments, he continues to grow in his processes, his technique, his style, and his love for art. And with a long career ahead of him, we’re all in for a ride, so please continue to watch and support as he defines himself in this crazy world full of artists. .and encouragement from fellow Sacramento artist, David Garibaldi. OFFICIAL TRAILER

In a time when America’s economy and sense of community were crumbling, one guy left everything behind – to see if he could survive solely on the support of the 21st century’s new town square: Craigslist. As of recent, the United States found itself in one of the most precarious financial meltdowns in modern history. News programs spoke of the worst economy since the great depression and demise of the American Dream. Unemployment was soaring and millions were losing their homes. Rather than banding together and helping one another, people started pointing fingers and casting blame. Many feared the sense of community that had once carried us through tough times had dissolved into an attitude of ‘every person for himself.’ Many were skeptical that today’s self-involved society would be able to weather the storm without its traditional social supports. It was in this climate that 29-year-old Joseph Garner cut himself off from everyone he knew and everything he owned, to embark on a bold adventure. Armed with only a laptop, cell phone, toothbrush, and the clothes on his back – alongside the hope that community was not gone but just had shifted – Joe lived for a month looking for alms in America’s new town square: Craigslist. For 31 December days and nights, everything in his life would come from the Craigslist website. From transportation to food, from shelter to companionship, Joe

would depend on the generosity of people who had never seen him and whose sole connection to him was a giant virtual swap meet. Would America help Joe? Could he survive with nothing, apart from the goodwill of others? Through his explorations, Joe gained insights into our collective psyche, and took the pulse of an anxious nation teetering on a knife’s edge of hope and uncertainty. Joe encountered a diversity of unique stories that reveal the layered mosaic of our national identity. He observes some of the most challenging issues facing our country today – from new economic realities to the continued reconstruction of New Orleans to the effect of America’s presence in Iraq. His experiences raise profound questions about who we are as a society and where we are headed, leaving you to draw your own conclusions.

the face of faces

terry sidie

Q&A with the man behind faces inc.

What was coming out for Terry Sidie? They didn’t teach me about gay in Wisconsin. So I thought there was something wrong with me. I had a really good friend and I liked to sleep on the same bed as him. There was nothing sexual about it. I just always had a really good friend. I liked my best friends a little too much. I used to steal the girlfriends off of them, that’s how I would keep them away from them. How old were you when you realized you were gay? I was in Detroit… I didn’t have my first [experience] until I was 19. The guy turned to me and asked “is that your first time?” and I replied “How could you tell? the footsteps in the ceiling?” I was a farm boy, we didn’t’ get to do anything…it was all new to me. How is the gay scene different from those times to now? We didn’t have those things on your phones where you can meet people… what do you call it? Grinder! We just went to an area were everyone went. Everybody in Detroit went to were the General Motors building is today and thats where people walked and drove around the block. How did you start being an entrepreneur in Sacramento? Well I opened up Bojangles off of Folsom boulevard at the time and people used to say no one would come. I was the bartender, the barback, the only employee. We got busy really fast and started hiring friends. Until I had about five employees, then I thought to myself, I’m now responsible for these people, so I knew I had to make it work.

photography by Mark gunter & Luis Barrera

Talking about Bojangles, when is the new location opening up? We hope by the labor day weekend. There is a need for 18 and over places for young people to come and socialize at a safe place. It’s not safe in the streets anymore like we used to hang out by the boulevard back in the days.

I think they call that retirement, correct? I don’t want to call it that, it sounds like you’re just waiting to die. I really enjoy living… I always enjoyed the jobs I have had… You know before Miguel, I was settle down with someone for about 20 years, so I only have had about three years of freedom.

How do you feel about our local gay scene? People used to say to me, oh you’re from SacaTomatoe? I hated that. Now, even though I love San Francisco, I think we have a better scene. We have a really good time here in our little neighborhood.

How hard is it for someone like you to date? I have always had fun, and it’s great when you’re young. Yet as you get older, you want to go home after a day at the office and settle down and rest… We have a forty year difference and I enjoy going home and watching the olympics and he [Miguel] enjoys watching Telenovelas and he won’t tell me whats happening, I don’t speak Spanish.

How is the relationship between Faces and Badlands? Well you know he [T.J.] likes me and I put up with him [Jokes]… Badlands really hasn’t hurt our business. If anything, it’s made us try and tailor more to the straight community. This was all a rundown neighborhood before Faces and Badlands… it’s helped the neighborhood to have our businesses near… gives us a Castro feel, well better than Castro, I think. How did Rainbow Festival start? It started about 25 years ago, to create a party for our area to help support the community center. It started out with five to six hundredth people, and it grew and grew and has grown each year since. What are Terry Sidies plans for the future? I plan on having a home somewhere in Europe, my farm in Wisconsin, a house in Mexico and travel for two to three months at a time.

From doing my research I understand you like that age difference, don’t you? Well yes! Sometimes I feel younger that he is… Once I’m not so busy I’ll can have more time to spend with him, it will be better. He likes the attention you know. As far as where it’s going [love] has a lifespan. He might get bored or I might get tired or running around like a twenty year old. Yet, if I didn’t want to be settled I wouldn’t be settled. I like being settled with Miguel. Whats next for Faces Inc.? Well the new Bojangles is opening up. We also just installed a $15,000 laser show program in our main dance floor. We have a lot of things that are new and exciting for a gay bar, we want people to come and enjoy our wonderful facilities. I would also like to help create some kind of October festival for our neighborhood. We need some new ideas.

] s u o l u b a f n [u social life By Luis Barrera

I remember growing up with the golden rule: “Don’t tell lies. Lies are bad and they hurt people.” Well you see, I think that’s the biggest lie of all. I think that lying is the easiest thing to do. Everyone lies, every day. We lie to others from the simple “how’s your day?” reply of “great, thanks” to ourselves with things like “oh that bagel doesn’t have that many calories in it.” The hardest thing however, is to tell the truth, because the truth always hurts.

Have you ever met someone who constantly giggles? Well I have. For all intents and purposes let’s call him Mr.Giggles. I met Mr.Giggles a few months back, soon after I moved to Sacramento, at the restaurant where he works. At first glance, I thought to my self, “He’s kind of cute”. Every time I went in for lunch, I found my self leaving with so much more than a full stomach, a smile. I guess I really didn’t think much of it, just some platonic flirting here and there. At first I wasn’t even sure if he was gay or just really nice. As you might recall I have a thing for bringing the fruit out of the straight boys (See Unfabulous Rule#1). It wasn’t until one of my friends confirmed he was actually gay that I began to wonder, maybe there is a little more to all that platonic flirting. It also didn’t help that I kept running into him - like everywhere. I was walking around midtown with my friend one Sunday afternoon when there he was, Mr.Giggles walking his dog. My friend and I stopped and made small talk for a second. My friend ended by saying “that’s a cool dog” I replied “He’s really cute” and added “the dog ain’t bad looking either.” Mr. Giggles well… just giggled. Little by little I got to know Mr. Giggles more and more. I found out he actually had a boyfriend and that we even had a few friends in common. Earlier this summer I was at a friends house when, to my surprise, Mr. Giggles came in. Except this time, there was something wrong with Mr. Giggles, he wasn’t giggling. We made some small talk and that’s when he told me, “My boyfriend and I broke up”. Seeing him so upset about his break up, I couldn’t

help but be a bit sad for the guy. A few days later I sent him a Facebook message to see how he was holding up. He said he had been doing better but was still pretty upset about the break up. It was a second saturday weekend, so I thought I would be a good samaritan and offer to cheer him up. Okay, fine, honestly, I thought to my self, it’s now or never - this is almost seven months in the making, carpe diem!. We made plans to meet up that second saturday and go out for a drink. That Saturday came, and it was weird how easy it was to talk to him outside of our normal small talk. It was also nice to see that some of that giggling meant we had a bit of chemistry. Drink after drink our conversation got deeper and deeper and I started to really get to know him. I realized he was a really nice, down to earth easy going guy. I thought to my self, jackpot! Finally a decent, cute, funny guy! After a couple more drinks, we took a cab to my place so I could do a quick change before we went out. As he stood in the middle of my loft talking about, gosh knows what, I took a chance and went in for the KISS, right in middle of his sentence. I discovered that not only was he nice, cute and giggly, but he was also a good kisser. After a couple more drinks and a little more French’ing we took a cab back to the gayborhood. As we walked towards the club, he asked for a quick second to smoke a cigarette. As I stood there waiting for Mr. Giggles to finish his cig, he began to open up more. That’s the moment I realized something about him. He was also a very honest and genuine person. That’s also the moment that I realized, Mr. Giggles was too good of a guy for me.

Because honestly, nine times out of ten, I’m the guy that when asked how I am, I say “I’m fine thanks” and close my self off to people. We finally made it to the club and in keeping with the honesty, I had a crazy amazing time with him. Not only was he cute, funny and all of the above, white boy had skills on the dance floor. After a few more drinks and a couple more hours of dancing we decided to call it a night. As we walked outside, to go our separate ways, I was able to steal one last kiss from Mr. Giggles, after which I just smiled all fifth-teen blocks back to my place. I also got to learn an...

Unfabulous Rule for a More Fabulous Life #4

Lies are Easy - Honesty is Not.

It could of been easy to lie to myself and think there was a future with Mr. Giggles. Yet, the honest truth, as hard as it was to realized, was that all he could of ever wanted from me was someone to giggle with. While I think it kind of sucks that nothing really came out of that really amazingly fun night with Mr.Giggles. I’m glad that I was able to be honest with my self about what Mr. Giggles really wanted from me, before I put myself in a pickle. That kind of self honesty is hard to come by, and that is nothing to giggle about. #FM(U)L. FM(U)L WANT MORE UNFABULOUS LIFE? DOWNLOAD THE FREE QSAC APP! For iPhones

The Summer of Love Five Effective Relationship Tips for Couples

> > > > >>>>

> > > > >>>>

>>

R A E Y S I H T NEW

By Florence A. Soares-Dabalos MS, LMFT #MFC40331

Ah yes, the summer of love is well underway and many brides are scurrying about to make sure everything will run smoothly for the big day. Perhaps even more important will be making sure the marriage will run equally smooth. Sharing effective relationship tips, then, is the best gift I can offer to those soon to be married.

1. Listen. The number one complaint I hear regarding relationship difficulties is, “S/He doesn’t listen to me!” Actively listening to your partner requires one to put her/his own agenda aside for a moment, to understand the other’s perspective, and to listen for any underlying concerns. 2. Use “I” Statements. “I” statements are a common tool that therapists use in teaching effective communication. When one uses the word “I” rather than “You”, this can reduce the possibility of an argument because the speaker takes ownership of his/her concern and the listener doesn’t feel the need to defend. For example, “You always run late!” might be said as, “I truly feel disrespected when you run late.” 3. Compromise. Any successful relation-

ey l l a r u o t de

ship requires negotiating what’s in the best interest of the couple and not necessarily the individual. Discuss what goals you desire as a couple and assess individual needs and expectations to help guide you.

4. Acceptance. Focus on the good things

your partner brings to the relationship. Remember, you can only change yourself and not anyone else. Of course know where you draw the line. Issues of infidelity, addiction, and abuse need not fall into this category.

5. Take a Time Out. Children aren’t the only ones who need to take a time- out. As adults our inner child can feel hurt, angry, and frustrated, too. During those times, it might be a good idea to take a step back and calm down before discussing “hot” topics. If you find that you and your partner continue to have difficulty communicating, enlist the help of a marriage therapist who can facilitate positive communication.
