Visitors to the 46th Annual Colusa Farm Show, the Granddaddy of all Farm Shows, can expect yet another exciting agriculture-based exhibition this year. This year’s Show has something for everyone.

The volunteers who make up the Colusa Farm Show Steering Committee bring a vast array of different experiences and information to ensure that this show is always at its best.

As was the tradition of the Show’s forefathers, present day volunteers continue to help to keep the Colusa Farm Show on the cutting edge of agricultural technology. Additionally, the Show continues to grow, and new events are added to improve on each year’s program.

Featured seminars this year are the California Highway Patrol and their presentation on the new transportation laws, as well as the issues facing farmers in California regarding water sponsored by the Family Water Alliance. The CCRD will also be featuring a new seminar about Farming with Wildlife, co-sponsored by the Autobahn of California and Pacific Gas & Electric will be here showcasing their new Time Varying Pricing in Agriculture. The Community Foundation of Colusa County is sponsoring a Farmer / Rancher Estate Planning seminar.

Colusa County Bounty coming to Farm Show A new vendor attraction at the 2011 Colusa Farm Show will display some of Colusa County’s own products. The Colusa County Bounty booth, hosted by the Colusa County Chamber of Commerce, will provide Show visitors with an opportunity to purchase locally grown and packaged commodities.

Aptly name, Colusa County Bounty, the products are a bountiful selection. Patrons will be tempted with products ranging from almond butter, to olives, beans, rice, an array of mixes including cornbread and pancake, and soaps and nuts to honey in a variety of flavors. These items are for sale year around at the Colusa Business & Visitors Center, but in an effort to better reach potential customers from out-of-

county, Colusa County Bounty was invited to the farm show as a new vendor.

The invitation to bring the products to the farm show was one the Chamber of Commerce eagerly accepted said Chamber Board member Lynda Reynolds.

“I think this is another terrific opportunity to get the word out about Colusa County and its international importance,” Reynolds said. “We really do feed the world.”

Capital Press sponsors Farm Show Hospitality Room Capital Press is continuing its support of the Colusa Farm Show this year by once again hosting the Show’s Hospitality Room.

Not only does it provide the exhibitors’ hospitality room, Capital Press also provides “food runners” to assist single exhibitors in getting his or her lunch.

Friends of Greg Goodin Support Community Center Project Ten year’s after his death, the late Greg Goodin is still being remembered in Colusa County.

In response to a fund-raising sponsorship request letter from the Colusa County Fair Board on behalf of the Colusa County Community Center construction project, the group known as “Friends of Greg Goodin” decided to see what they could do to help out and also recognize Goodin for his dedication to Colusa County.

A recent fund-raising effort hosted by the late Greg Goodin’s brother Stan Goodin of Reno and Paul Sankey of Colusa, raised funds as a donation to assist in the completion of the Center being built at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.

“We were able to raise a considerable sum for the Community Center project at the event held in December,” Stan Goodin said. “We

served Hors D’ Oeuvres and drinks at Dave Holeman’s Shop. People were very generous in their support.”

He added, “We have formed the Friends of Greg Goodin, and we are attempting to help with the completion of the Community Center, and in doing so provide some recognition for Greg’s memory.”

Although the organization has a good start at the fund-raising effort, its members would like to do more. Contributions can be sent to Paul Sankey at 315 Market Street, Colusa, CA 95932. Checks should be made payable to the 44th District Agricultural Association [44th DAA.] Goodin was 51 when he passed away at his home in Colusa in 2001. He was born in Colusa and was a lifelong Colusa resident. He managed the family business [Tri-

County Petroleum] with his parents Bud and Virginia Goodin for many years. He graduated from the University of Nevada where he was an member of the SAE Fraternity.

His ties remained with Colusa County where he was active as a member of the Colusa Rotary Club, past chairman of Colusa Ducks Unlimited, chairman of the Fish and Game Commission, and commissioner of the Colusa Rural Fire Department.

Plans for the Colusa County Community Center were developed by the Colusa County Fair Board. It will replace the old Flower Building formerly known as the Firemen’s Beer Garden Area.

The project will include a small

kitchen area for food preparation, and an area for a barbecue facility for events such as family reunions, small weddings, business meetings, or employee appreciation luncheons.

Significant donors of $5,000 or more will receive major signage and recognition on the building.

New Water Rights Reporting Draws Concern Property owners who divert water from a California river or stream must now file a Statement of Water Diversion and Use with the State Water Resources Control Board [SWRCB,] as part of Senate Bill 8 [SB 8,] passed by the legislature in late 2009. This law applies to pre-1914 and riparian water rights holders.

The law has been on the books since the 1960’s, but SB 8 assesses new fines and penalties for noncompliance. As part of the bill, the law now appropriates $3.75 million to the SWRCB to hire 25 new staff members to enforce the reporting and monitoring regulation. The reports were to be filed by water diverters before July 1, 2010.

Many farmers and ranchers in the valley who are riparian water rights users have never reported or even measured their water use causing

great concern for those property owners. The enforcement of this law is the states attempt to measure all water use throughout the Central Valley.

The new statement is to include each point of diversion and also the amount of water diverted from each point for every month in 2009. Upon arrival, the statements are reviewed and assigned StatementWater diverson located on the Sacramento River in Sutter County. Numbers along with an electronic password for continued reporting. New statements are to be filed every 3 years before July 1st of that year.

The SWRCB is also to be notified of a change of name or address of the party diverting the water through the Supplemental Statement or a Notice of Assignment form. Furthermore, changes in diversion lo-

cation or new diversions require additional statements.

The fines included an initial penalty of $1,000 for failure to file with a $500 per day fine after the 30-day correction period. Accidental Misstatements [including those caused by a broken measuring device] will incur a $250 penalty, with a $250 penalty per day after the 60-day correction period.

The largest and most serious fine

is for Willful Misstatements [including those caused by tampering a water measuring device.] Such a penalty would cost the diverter $25,000 and $1,000 per day after the 30-day correction penalty.

The Community Foundation of Colusa County is sponsoring a farm/ranch estate planning seminar during the 46th annual Colusa Farm Show.

New York Life Insurance agents Tip Thompson and Ignacio Martinez will present the seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 2, during the Farm Show. It is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. [following the Family Water Alliance seminar] in the sheep barn.

The program is designed to assist farmers and ranchers in “getting their estate planning house in order and explore charitable giving.”

This seminar will review many of the issues faced by the farmers and ranchers today. Among the topics covered are: the impact the loss of a key employee has on the owner of a ranch or farm; ways to reward key employees and owners; and, estate planning issues that will be faced by the farm and ranch owner and his/her family at death.

At press time in January, the business was anticipating expanding its hours to include dinner as well.

by Butte Creek Farms.

Butte Creek Farms CEO Ed Hulbert, explained at the time of the opening in November, that the project continues the legacy of the Otterson family in development of projects in Colusa County.

Hulbert added that the renovation is phase I of the 88 acre resort project included in the resort commercial rezone located in the Colusa County General Plan update.

The success of the business serving only lunch and bar services have encouraged its management to expand into the dinner hour said Hulbert.

“We have a well received menu for lunch, and we will continue serving those items into the dinner hour and offer dinner specials as well,” he said. “I hope the Colusa Farm Show patrons will include dinner at the Steelhead Lodge Bar & Grill in their after-Farm Show schedules.”

In addition to the restaurant and bar, the business offers RV parking and truck and boat trailer parking across the road.

Hulbert commented that the RV spaces are fully rented, but as duck season ends in January there will be space rental openings again.

“We are ramping up for fishing season in March and April,” he added.

There are future expansion plans as well.

“As we move forward in the permitting process we will add restrooms and showers on the RV and trailer parking site,” said Hulbert.

Again, depending on the permitting and the rezoning process, Hulbert said the goal is to complete a boat ramp in 2011.

There is currently dock space rental available and they anticipate offering fuel service by April or May 2011.

The restaurant and bar are located at 3249 Butte Slough Road along the Sacramento River at Colusa.

PG&E Seminar: Time Varying Pricing for Agricultural Customers PG&E will have a booth at the 2011 Colusa Farm Show, and it will also participate in the seminar program during the Show.

Early next year, under a new requirement developed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and all other leading utility companies statewide will fortify California’s reputation as a leader in energy conservation by introducing new time varying pricing plans designed to help increase California’s grid reliability and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

The changes will eventually affect all business and residential customers.

PG&E is adopting time varying pricing. “PG&E is always working to design programs that conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help us avoid building new power plants,” stated Vanessa Volksen, Business Field Representative at PG&E. “Time varying pricing does just that – and saves customers money, too.”

Under this kind of plan, customers pay higher rates at certain times

when energy demand peaks and lower rates at other times. Starting on February 1, 2011, small agricultural customers will be transitioned to Time of Use (TOU) pricing and large agricultural customers will transition to Peak Day Pricing (PDP). Other time varying pricing plans are also available if a customer enrolls five days prior to their transition date.

During the PG&E seminar at the farm show, the topics covered will be small agricultural customers (<200 kW) transition to TOU, large agricultural customers (≥ 200 kW) transition to PDP. All aspects of the program including bill protection for the first year of participation are scheduled for discussion during the seminar.

To help agricultural customers keep costs down while continuing to meet their specific business needs, PG&E offers an extensive portfolio of Demand Response programs with alternative pricing options. PG&E Representatives on staff with the utility can help customers understand how PDP works or help them choose a more appropriate program. PG&E will also hold educational workshops to provide in-depth information before

the transition date.

46 years of history: the colusa farm show The Colusa Farm Show is the oldest continuous equipment show on the west coast and has earned the name of Granddaddy of Farm Shows.

It still offers free parking and free admission.

Now in its 46th year, the Show was first established as the Sacramento Valley Orchard Show in 1966.

The Farm Show Committee recently received the minutes from the original general arrangements committee meeting for the Sacramento Valley Orchard Machinery Fair. The meeting was held at the Country Kitchen in Gridley, CA on July 7, 1965.

Original committee members attending the meeting included; Norman Boeger, grower and catching frame manufacturer; Al Burling, Olive Industry; Morris DeLay, Manager, Colusa County Fair; Noah Good, Manager Colusa County Chamber of Commerce; Clyde Harter, grower; Fred Montgomery, grower, Bob Schubbe, Almond Exchange; Art Smith, grower; Jerry Stiefvater, grower; Rodney Vertrees, grower and orchard equipment manufacturer; Bill Winkler, Sunsweet field manager. Additionally, the following Extension Service personnel were present: Wallace Schreader, Art

On the committee, but not attending the July 7 meeting was Hugh Jones, Chairman, Colusa County Fair Board.

What began as a fair reserved for orchard growers has now evolved into a farm show exhibition with something to offer an expanded audience.

While some Colusa County residents still refer to the event as the “Orchard Show” the Colusa Farm Show has become a much anticipated venue to showcase the latest in farming equipment and techniques said Colusa County Fairgrounds CEO Carolan Meek.

It also now includes educational seminars on a variety of topics.

This year’s seminars will feature presentations by PG&E, the California Highway Patrol, New York Life on Farmer / Rancher Estate Planning, and the Family Water Alliance.

The prospect of organizing the show was first discussed in July of 1965. According to previous reports on the show’s history, this was during a time when farming was becoming mechanized and there was great interest in gather-

ing manufacturers and farmers in one place.

Meeting minutes from that July 1965 meeting indicate that at that time the fruit industry of the Sacramento Valley was anxious to have some organization take the responsibility of giving an opportunity to see and compare various types of orchard equipment in one place.

The demand was great enough that it compelled those gathered there to put the show together.

Actually, the show was intended to be a one-time-only event. Instead, it has successfully grown for 46 years.

H.L. Peterson, who has been involved with the show for about 30 years, credits the success of the show to the people behind it.

In an earlier interview, Peterson committed that early on it was a blessing of the 44th District Agricultural Association that they saw the value of the show and offered its full support.

Colusa Casino Resort; a longstanding Farm Show Friend and Supporter A longstanding relationship that began more than 25 years ago between the Colusa Casino Resort and Colusa County Fair management continues.

Colusa Casino Resort has been a longstanding friend and supporter of the Colusa County Fairgrounds and many of the events that are hosted there.

Fairgrounds CEO Carolan Meek said that she and the 44 District Agricultural Association [44th DAA] Board continues to appreciate the Casino and the efforts it makes on behalf of the fairgrounds and all of its events.

This year, the Colusa Casino Resort is sponsoring the commodity bags for distribution to Farm Show vendors. In past years the casino has been co-sponsor of the Farm Show Commodity Cookoff. It will continue its contribution to the cook-off again this year but the event has been rescheduled to take place from the farm show to the Colusa County Fair. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at Festival Hall.

“We have a new demonstration stage in Festival Hall, and it will be a great venue for this event,” Meek said. “We certainly appreciate the continued support of the Casino in order to keep this great event going.”

Since Native American gaming became a reality, the Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians has begun to realize its dream of economic self-sufficiency. The revenues earned from the gaming facility are used to support vital government programs, infrastructure projects, and economic development for the benefit of its tribal members and its community. From improved health care to increased educational opportunities for its tribal members and descendents,the lives of the tribal members have been greatly enhanced.

Originally, Colusa Casino Resort opened as Colusa Bingo in 1986

as a 1,200 seat high-stakes bingo hall. The first 80 slot machines were introduced in 1992. In 2004, it undertook its largest and most impressive expansion project to date.

Today, the Colusa Casino Resort offers a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for visitors to try their luck at large jackpots. Farm Show Breakfast returns The annual Colusa Farm Show Breakfast hosted by alumni of the CSU, Chico College of Agriculture, California Agricultural Leadership Foundation and Alpha Gamma Rho, will be at the Colusa Farm Show again this year. This is the 9th annual breakfast and it will take place at Saint Bernadette’s Hall, 745 Ware Ave., conveniently located directly behind the Colusa County Fairgrounds.

California Farm Bureau Federation President Paul Wenger is this year’s guest speaker. A third-generation farmer, Wenger farms almonds and walnuts on the family farm in Modesto, which includes property purchased by his grandfather in 1910. He is an alumnus of Modesto Junior College and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and was a fellow in Class 17 of the California Agricultural Leadership Program.

Wenger was elected president of the California Farm Bureau Federation in December 2009.

Proceeds from the breakfast support California Agricultural Leadership Foundation Fellowships as well as Chico State Ag Alumni scholarships and academic needs.

Harry Krug After serving at the helm of the County’s agricultural industry for more than 20 years, Harry Krug has retired as ag commissioner.

Krug retired in December with 23 years of service as county ag commissioner. While serving in that capacity, Krug also accepted the roles of Sealer of Weights and Measures, Air Pollution Control Officer, Director of Migrant Housing and Director of Airport Operations.

“I’ve had a good run,” Krug said.

“Now its time to slowdown and relax a little bit.”

Krug said he plans to remain in the area and spend a little extra time on the golf course. During his tenure as Colusa County Ag Commissioner, Krug was responsible for obtaining grant funding that was used to help construct a new migrant housing facility in

Williams for farm labors and their families.

He was also instrumental in obtaining $3 million in grant funding for various projects at the Colusa County Airport.

Krug has served on the California Transportation Commission’s Technical Advisory Committee on Aeronautics since 2002, representing the Association of California Airports and general aviation airports at large.

He has been involved with the Colusa County Aviation Association and was instrumental in starting the Old Time Fly-in held each July at the Colusa County Airport.

He is a private pilot, member of the Colusa Rotary Club, Colusa Golf and Country Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Idaho Aviation Association and the National Auto Sport Associa-

tion.

“I have enjoyed working with people and I think they have enjoyed working with me,” said Krug.

He plans to spend his retirement by traveling, playing golf, flying, camping, fishing and spending time at the airport.
