Faith-Based and Mission-Driven: The UCH Difference
In 1916, pastors and church leaders founded the predecessor to today’s United Church Homes (UCH). From its humble beginning to 2022, UCH has become a modern, growing ministry serving more than 9,000 older adults in 15 states and 2 tribal nations. From our first day onward, UCH has remained based in faith and driven by its nonprofit, charitable mission. It’s the “UCH Spirit” and we believe it is distinctive.
First of all, we are different because our roots are planted in the church and nourished by pastors and people of faith serving on our staff and Board of Directors. This distinction has created a unique pastoral presence within the organization.
Second, there is a palpable sense of spirit. From my earliest days with UCH, I often met residents and family members who would comment, “there is something different about United Church Homes’ communities. You can feel
it when you walk through the doors of a community.” By this they mean they experience a genuine hospitality, a deep sense of the staff’s compassion and an organization that works ethically. People encounter a life spirit—some say the Holy Spirit depicted in the Bible. We celebrate that spirit in whatever ways it is manifest—through community, wholeness and peace.
We also embrace a holistic perspective that affirms the importance of emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing. United Church Homes is different because our pastoral presence, rooted in Christ’s example, changes the way we think about our humanity in its wholeness. We believe there is a sacredness to aging. And we support each person in body, mind and spirit through the work we do and the environments we cultivate.
We have a long tradition of providing chaplains in many of our life plan and healthcare communities, many with advanced post-graduate training in clinical pastoral education, the national standard for excellence. Chaplaincy is one of the most visible signs of our faith-based identity.
Most importantly, the UCH spirit has shaped our board and organizational culture since our founding. Our values define our culture: Compassion, Hospitality, Respect, Integrity, Stewardship and Transparency. While values are common to many nonprofit organizations, they also define how we look at our work as a mission that drives toward a greater vision for our world.
The Board of Directors and leadership team understand there is more to the organization’s work than meets the eye. Embedded in our vision, “where the Spirit creates abundant life in community,” is a call to make the world a better place. This is reflected in our commitment to support diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, not just for the people we serve, but also for the wider communities where we operate.
We see our work as a ministry and part of God’s larger plan to remake the world into a place where all can experience abundant life in a loving, just, inclusive community. We have been committed to this work every day, every year, in every decade of our existence. You will see this shine through the stories in this, our Annual Report for 2021.
This is the UCH Spirit and we believe it makes a difference.

NaviGuide Launches and Links Older Adults with Services
NaviGuide makes life easier for families by providing a trained service coordinator to arrange and manage a menu of services that help aging loved ones continue to live well and remain independent. The service coordinator works with the older adult and their adult children to create personalized solutions ensuring they prioritize the needs and goals of the family.
United Church Homes (UCH) has launched NaviGuide, a new service for older adults living independently. Aging parents often turn to adult children for support in managing day-to-day activities like scheduling medical appointments, setting up home health care, navigating Medicare, cooking, grocery shopping and lawn care.
It is a subscription-based service available in Franklin, Delaware and Greene counties in Ohio. NaviGuide service coordinators do not provide direct inhome services. Instead, NaviGuide service coordinators assist older adults with navigating healthcare options, linking them to community-based services and securing solutions that are critical to living well. NaviGuide service coordinators have strong professional connections in the aging services community and years of experience building service plans for individuals that improve their health and wellbeing.
United Church Homes already provides service coordinators in its independent senior living communities, including The Polaris Community and several affordable housing communities in Franklin and Delaware counties. There are many community-based programs and services available to older adults; however, families may not know about those or how to navigate the complicated network of aging services. Family members, especially adult children, or caregivers whom NaviGuide uniquely speaks to, usually have very full lives of their own.
“It is time-consuming and confusing to coordinate services for a parent when you’re busy juggling careers, family commitments and your own home,” said Dan Fagan, Executive Director of Housing and Services.
Kim Yoder, UCH NaviGuide Program Manager said service coordinators understand the demands and become the trusted link between families and services needed to support a loved one on their aging journey. “This eases the burden for everyone so that mom or dad get the support they need and adult children have peace of mind.”
NaviGuide service coordinators also can help families when their loved ones are returning home from hospital stays or recovering from surgeries. Service coordinators help with these transitions by providing recommendations and coordinating assistance for help at home.
“NaviGuide is a godsend for my parents and me,” said Jackie, an adult daughter whose father has benefitted from the service.
“My parents were determined to stay in the home they’d had for over 50 years. Then my dad had a stroke. He was always the handyman around
2 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2022 | unitedchurchhomes.org
the house and since he retired he helped mom with laundry, going to the store, even cooking. I knew mom wouldn’t be able to handle it all by herself. I helped as much as I could, but I have to travel for my job and couldn’t always be there when they needed something. That’s when I heard about NaviGuide. Our service coordinator spent time getting to know them and how they live. Then she put together a plan that provided the services and supports they need to remain in their home. It’s given us peace of mind knowing that NaviGuide is in our corner, making life easier for all of us.”
NaviGuide service coordinators have professional training and experience dealing with the challenges older adults and families face. Since NaviGuide service coordinators have regular contact with clients, they often are the first people to notice a change and begin important conversations such as when more services may be needed or it’s time to consider a move to a senior living community that offers a higher level of care.
It is simple to get started with NaviGuide. A service coordinator will do an initial in-home visit to determine what services an older adult needs. After the initial
assessment, a month-to-month subscription provides the ongoing monitoring, service set ups and special discounts from preferred providers who prioritize NaviGuide members.
The NaviGuide pilot in Greene County is being supported in part by a grant from the Yellow Springs Community Foundation, to provide 14 older adults in that village with three free months
of service. “We are fortunate to have foundation partners that invest in new projects that support older adults,” said Gloria Hurwitz, Vice President of Advancement.
NAVIGUIDE PROVIDES:
• 24-hour NaviGuide call service
• Medical and personal care appointment scheduling
• Coordination of transportation
• Setup of food and prescription home delivery
• Navigation of today’s complicated healthcare system
• Scheduling of household chores, repairs and care
• Connection to benefits and services older adults qualify for, but may not be aware of
• Explanation of the various options for aging seniors, including assisted living and senior communities

“Without support, it would be difficult or perhaps impossible to provide this much-needed subsidy in Yellow Springs for NaviGuide during the initial pilot year.”
Pastoral Spirit RUNS DEEP
UCH and its Board also has maintained a close affiliation with the United Church of Christ, even as other nonprofit housing providers have distanced their organizations from their faith-inspired roots. In 2011, Reverend Dr. Kenneth Daniel, a United Church of Christ ordained minister, became UCH’s president and chief executive officer.
at the corporate level and within the communities they serve.
The role of UCH chaplain is more expansive than the title suggests. Like chaplains serving in the military, prisons and hospitals, their focus is on spirituality rather than religion and they minister to people of all faiths.
“Chaplains are there to help residents discover and achieve abundant living and to support them as they grieve
A pastoral perspective of love and compassion informs every aspect of care and service for residents in United Church Homes’ communities.
Since its founding in 1916 by five church leaders, UCH has maintained its unwavering commitment to serving the minds, bodies and spirits of its residents, particularly those in rural areas unable to rely on family for care in their later years.
UCH started as “The Home for the Aged” in Toledo, providing respite for six individuals. Later, the community moved to a farm in Upper Sandusky and was renamed The Fairhaven Community. By the 1960s it was home to about 140 older adults.
As Medicare and Medicaid benefits were established in the 1960s, UCH received support through government reimbursements to support its mission of service for older adults and with the establishment of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, UCH began to create safe, socially enriched affordable housing communities for people in need.
“We see every aspect of our work through a pastoral lens,” Rev. Daniel explained. “The board is firmly church-minded in UCH’s strategic direction – with its commitment to LGBT and multicultural communities –and in setting priorities and decision-making. Five of UCH’s 14 board members are ordained and all see the care provided as a ministry and serving those in need has remained a priority focus.”
Today, the nine UCH chaplains serving residents, family members, volunteers and staff are ambassadors of kindness and caring, and visible symbols of UCH’s commitment to its faith-based mission. They are leaders
for loved ones they have lost and deal with the struggles of declining health,” explained Reverend Becky King who serves as UCH dean of chaplains and director of spiritual care for the Trinity Communities in Dayton. “We’re here to support each resident – sharing in the celebration of joyous events and comforting in times of sorrow and loss.”
“Chaplains build relationships by fostering connections and letting individuals know they are loved. In return, we are honored to learn from them which enriches our lives, too.”
Finding new ways to help residents live abundantly is part of the role of UCH chaplains. They foster a sense of community, compassion and care,
4 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2022 | unitedchurchhomes.org
which is so fundamental to humankind. That commitment extends beyond residents to staff and the broader community.
“Members of the UCH board firmly believe that our mission extends beyond our communities,” Rev. Daniel said. “We are committed to promoting social justice and feel a sense of responsibility to impact society in a positive way. Consistent with the mission of the United Church of Christ, we welcome all, love all and seek justice for all.”
UCH’s clinical pastoral education (CPE) program at The Trinity Community Beavercreek is a multi-faith clinical internship for developing professional skills in spiritual caregiving. Accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (APCE), UCH’s CPE program is open to a diverse community of clergy. Certified Instructor Reverend Mary Catherine Cole facilitates group and individual learning in the dynamic graduate level program.
This innovative program includes a clinical component with students serving as chaplain interns in Trinity’s rehabilitation, memory care, skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living neighborhoods.
“Our residents place great value on the CPE program and the important role chaplains play in the community,” said Senior Executive Director Laura Farrell of The Trinity Community at Beavercreek. “The greatest benefit of the CPE program is giving residents a sense of purpose. They welcome the opportunity to give back through their engagement with students.”
“Chaplains are an important part of our interdisciplinary teams,” Farrell said. “Residents view them as spiritual guides – as empathetic nonjudgmental friends they can confide in with total confidence. They also provide support to residents’ family members and to staff.”
“We made a commitment to introduce pastoral care into all campuses with skilled nursing,” Rev. Daniel said. “We intentionally seek out chaplains with significant postgraduate training and who enthusiastically embrace and represent UCH’s core values.”
“Our culture is very deliberate and the mission is embedded throughout our organization,” he continued. “Chaplains are a visible reminder of a deeper spiritual, ethical and social justice commitment ingrained in every aspect of our work.”
UCH Welcomes Two New Chaplains
United Church Homes is pleased to welcome two new chaplains to its dedicated team.
Reverend Darla Metz joins The Fairhaven Community as its full-time chaplain. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Tiffin University and a Master of Divinity degree from Methodist Theological School of Ohio. She was called to full-time ministry in 2011 at Republic United Church of Christ, and in 2017 also began serving the congregation of St. Jacob’s United Church of Christ –both in Republic, Ohio. She has completed one unit of clinical pastoral education and will be a student in UCH’s next CPE class.
She and her husband have been together for 27 years, have five children, 12 grandchildren, a dog named Zeke and nine chickens.
“I’m very excited and blessed to be a part of this wonderful community at Fairhaven,” she said. “I am so very grateful for the warm welcome that has been extended and look forward to our journey together.”
Reverend Jessica Tinkham joins The Trinity Community at Beavercreek as a part-time chaplain. She earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Wright State University and a Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary. She has completed several units of clinical pastoral education at The Trinity Community at Beavercreek and a 12-month CPE residency with Kettering Health.
She and her husband have been married for 18 years and have three beautiful children.
“I’m happy to be at The Trinity Community at Beavercreek as a part-time chaplain,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to work alongside a wonderful staff and serve wonderful residents, and I have time to spend with my incredible family.”

Pillar Highlight: Social Connections
Amy Kotterman, Director of Customer Experience at United Church Homes said the organization is seeing more new residents with tablets, smartphones and computers.
Kotterman added she attributes the isolation experienced during the pandemic to the growing number of older adults wanting access and education on how to use it. “For many people in our communities, technology became the primary way they were able to connect to family, friends and medical providers,” said Kotterman. “They began using various apps to connect with others, seeking purposeful and individualized engagement.”
Kotterman was happy to see this, as she was already working on implementing Touchtown within United Church Homes senior living communities. Touchtown is an online tool that serves as a hub of information for residents, family members and prospects.
Through Touchtown, a resident and their family can view the same calendar of events through their mobile phone app, laptop, tablet or on a dedicated TV channel throughout the communities.
Olivia Markley, service coordinator at United Church Homes, The Polaris Community said,
Markley said when families cannot be around, residents are able to use the app to connect with neighbors to play games and plan activities together.
Touchtown has been implemented in six United Church Homes communities, with nine additional planned in 2022. Each community
has its own tailored version of the application, offering a customized experience for each user.
Communities currently utilizing Touchtown:
The Brunswick Community
The Glenwood Community
The Niles Community
The Polaris Community
The Trinity Community at Fairwood
The Trinity Community at Miami Township
Communities adding Touchtown in 2022:
The Chapel Hill Community
The Parkvue Community
The Trinity Community at Beavercreek Affordable Housing Communities

“Touchtown offers residents choice,” Kotterman said.
“Individuals using the app can choose what they want to engage in and how to receive the information.”
As the world becomes more dependent on virtual technology for staying connected, so do older adults.
Amy Kotterman
“Our residents are very tech-savvy and prefer connecting through their phones or tablets. Touchtown has been very easy for them to use.”
New Projects Advance UCH’s GROWTH PLAN
United Church Homes’ (UCH) strategic growth goals have never been about the bottom line, but rather about advancing the organization’s mission to help a diverse population of older adults live abundant lives.
“We cast a wide net in implementing our strategic growth plan,” explained Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer, Terry Spitznagel. “We work with a diverse group of individuals and organizations in financing, development, acquisition and management which create opportunities to meet and work with others who help advance UCH’s mission.”
Spitznagel’s commitment to UCH’s mission is what motivates her to identify and pursue opportunities for growth, including the new Whisper Hills mixed income senior community in San Marcos, Texas, about 50 miles northeast of San Antonio.
UCH is an investor in the project which involves construction of a 277 unit independent living senior community which UCHM will manage once it is completed. Mission DG, whose core values of integrity, innovation and partnership align with UCH’s vision, is a partner in the project which will create a vibrant community for seniors in southern Texas.
“Diversity, equity and inclusion are important UCH priorities,” Spitznagel said. “We’re excited to expand our portfolio to serve a largely hispanic community through our first housing community in Texas.”
The Whisper Hills Community — which will be rich in amenities including a swimming pool, fitness center, art studio, dog park and more – is expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of 2023.
“We’re also excited about the Longfellow Midtown Community and our partnership with the G.F. Baily Company and Weyland Ventures,” Spitznagel said. “It involves restoration of the historic Longfellow school building, a Dayton landmark, as well as new construction of 80 apartments on the campus. It will provide an open and affirming environment offering a welcoming and safe campus specifically appealing to those older adults of the LGBTQ+ community.”
Six million dollars in financial commitments – including $1.84 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits – have been secured for the $30-plus million development project located near downtown Dayton. Beautiful architectural features of the historic Longfellow school building, built in 1882, will be preserved including 12-foot pressed metal ceilings, exposed brick, ornate woodwork and staircases and terrazzo floors.
Strategic
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and the project is expected to be occupancy-ready in late 2023.
UCH also welcomed three managed communities recently: Columbus Colony Housing in Columbus, Ohio, Ken Mar Apartments in Martinsville, Indiana and and Meridian Point in Uniontown, PA.
Columbus Colony Housing is an affordable housing community that shares a campus with Columbus Colony for Elderly Care, also managed by UCH. It features 106 affordable housing apartments. About 60 percent of them are occupied by residents who are deaf or blind. The 40-plus-year-old building will be renovated top to bottom, including new flooring, kitchens and bathrooms in each apartment.

“We’re excited about these latest projects and eager to increase the number of seniors that we serve with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion,” Spitznagel said. “It’s all about fulfilling our mission to help more older adults live abundantly!”
Celebrates Five Years of Ministry
2022 marks the five-year anniversary of the establishment of an important donor-sponsored initiative of United Church Homes (UCH): the Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging (RFPCAA).
The center’s primary goal is to transform how society views aging through engagement, education and advocacy, aligning closely with UCH’s mission to transform aging by building a culture of community, wholeness and peace.
Named for Ruth Frost Parker, who served as the inspiration for many UCH initiatives, the center is led by Reverend Beth Long-Higgins, Vice President of Engagement for UCH. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ for more than three decades, Long-Higgins is a tireless advocate for older adults. She joined UCH in 2013 and was named as the RFPCAA founding executive director in 2017. The success of The Parker Center and our growing accomplishments lead UCH to recently expand Long-Higgins’ role to Vice President of Engagement, bringing her expertise in engagement on the national scene to the executive table.
the gifts older adults contribute to society, confront and eliminate ageism, grow an understanding of the many facets of the aging journey and facilitate partnerships with other organizations seeking to enhance the quality of life for older adults. The center also provides education and other resources on aging for religious, community and healthcare professionals who support older adults.
“We live in a society with a youthfocused culture,” explained LongHiggins. “There is an inherent bias against the aging process. Ageism and making assumptions of one’s abilities based on age, is far too prevalent.”
“Our intent is to foster connections by promoting conversation and building community to enhance the experience and understanding of aging abundantly,” she continued. “Our outreach extends to older adults, professionals, academics and students, clergy and religious leaders and organizations.”
Long-Higgins is passionate that as we age, we cultivate wisdom. This cultivation involves deep listening and learning, while reflecting on life experiences. She said we have internalized our culture’s messages which suggest that aging itself is something to ignore, deny, cover up or cure. We don’t have to hold on to those messages when we discover that despite the challenges aging presents, there are other ways to
engage in the world with purpose and meaning.
Today, humans are functioning at higher levels for longer periods of time with chronic illnesses controlled through medication, and surgeries like knee and hip replacements allowing older adults to remain active longer, giving them more time to make a difference in the world. LongHiggins strives to help individuals and organizations better understand the many facets of aging, surprisingly noting that the first, second and third most creative decades of one’s life are 60 to 70, 70 to 80, and 50 to 60, respectively.
“Individuals who have a positive outlook about aging generally live about seven years longer than those with negative perceptions,” she said. “And people who continue to work past age 65, whose work gives their lives purpose, tend to live longer. Meaningful purpose is a key ingredient of quality of life.”
In the The Parker Center’s mission to transform how society thinks about aging, it has expanded to offer a variety of resources including the Another Day Older Conversation Guide – designed for virtual or in-person group discussions, aimed at sparking conversation about ageism and challenging individuals to reframe attitudes toward aging. Darla Metz, chaplain at The Fairhaven Community, described the program as enlightening, “When I attended the seminar, I was very enlightened on ageism and how the words and phrases we use as we minister to our more mature parishioners can have a negative outlook. Though perhaps not intentional, certain phrases can be hurtful to those we love and minister to. I am now able to be more conscientious of what it is I want to say and how to phrase so it is heard in a much more appropriate and uplifting manner.”

RUTH FROST PARKER CENTER FOR ABUNDANT AGING
The RFPCAA holds an annual symposium in Columbus, OH.
Some of the center’s programs are designed specifically for elders, including the Art of Aging Podcast which explores topics and experiences relevant to older adults. The podcasts offer ideas, information and inspiration on how to improve our lives as we grow older. This product stems from a partnership with The Dayton Foundation’s Del Mar Encore Fellow, Eric Johnson.
Enliven features a series of online courses for older adults that create community and conversation around spiritual life, encouraging individuals to learn, grow and share together. Dale, a participant in the Qigong sessions said, “The course touches my heart and soul. I’m at peace and God’s presence is strong. It’s a reminder in this violent world that love always wins.” Rev. Dr. Janet Ross reflects, “I came into the Qi Gong class completely new to the practice. I have learned more than I would have imagined, including the power of
slowing down, listening and moving as my body seeks to move.”
Annual symposiums hosted by the The Parker Center bring together nationally recognized speakers, experts on aging and an interdisciplinary audience of older adults, students, professionals and community members.
In addition to partnering with groups to design and cocreate programs, The Parker Center offers presentations and workshops on a range of aging topics including: Living well in later life, Spirituality and aging and Age-Friendly Congregations.
The Parker Center’s first five years have been busy, productive and impressive in its accomplishments. In 2018 it was honored to receive the Social Impact Award from LeadingAge Ohio for its symposiums and in 2019 the Partner of the Year Award from
the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging for co-presenting the LGBT Horizons of Aging Summit.
As Long-Higgins looks back on the center’s beginnings and ahead to the future, Ruth Frost Parker’s words are front of mind: There is still so much work to be done.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER
Celebrating CENTENARIANS who embrace UCH’s commitment to LiveIt!
United Church Homes (UCH) understands that everyone’s life journey is different and that many factors contributing to longevity also impact quality of life. That’s why our communities provide opportunities to meet residents’ unique needs and paths to achieving abundant living. We don’t just imagine a world where life in retirement is filled with meaning, purpose and joy – we strive to create it!
UCH’s LIVE IT! program is at the heart of its mission to celebrate the spirit of older adults and help them age abundantly. It addresses all the factors that contribute to health and longevity, which center around three core pillars: Living Life with Purpose; Creating Social Connections; and living Safe and Sound.
Social-emotional issues also impact longevity, with research showing the benefits of maintaining social connections, spirituality, forgiveness and living a life of purpose.
explained Reverend Becky King, who serves as dean of chaplains and director of spiritual care at The Communities of Greater Dayton.
That’s part of what makes UCH different. It’s not about asking residents to adapt to what UCH offers, but rather about UCH adapting to the needs of its residents. It’s about offering a wide range of opportunities and experiences to maintain social connections.
10 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2022 | unitedchurchhomes.org
Google “keys to longevity” and you’ll find lots of good advice but no guaranteed formulas for achieving it.
“We seek to foster a sense of community, compassion and care,”
“Older adults have a passion for life and want to feel connected. We help them find what makes their lives abundant – what gives them a sense of purpose – and look for new ways to help them achieve it.”
The Glenwood Community is home to FRAN BISHOP, who at 106 years of age is UCH’s oldest centenarian. A resident for 14 years, Fran offers her best advice for achieving longevity: “Just enjoy life and quit worrying about things.” Her grandmother played an important role in Fran’s life, teaching her “everything there is to know about everything.” Her life’s passion has been volunteer work, including through her church. She has a deep love of animals and dogs have been a cherished part of her life.
One-hundred-year-old LILA HILL also has lived in The Glenwood Community for seven years. The former accountant was an avid bowler, traveling to state and national tournaments for 50 years. Her niece, friends at The Pines assisted living neighborhood and her church family are dear to her. She cites exercise, continued use of her mind and a little bit of luck as the key factors in her longevity.
KEN SNAVLEY is UCH’s second oldest centenarian. In July he will celebrate his 105th birthday and eight years living at The Trinity Community at Miami Township. He is proud of his military service and names his daughter and late mother as the most important people in his life. Representatives of the Masons recently presented him with a certificate for 75 years of membership in the Grand Lodge of Masons of the State of New York and he was elevated to the sublime degree of Master Mason. His secret to longevity and abundant life? The people who surround him.
MARY FRAN SHEPHERD has resided at The Trinity Community at Miami Township for four years. The 100-yearold lady credits two friends from her church, both of whom work in healthcare, for support that has extended her life. She has a great appreciation for art and music, loved to knit and sell handmade hats to a local shop, and enjoys puzzles and reading. Her secret to a long life is prayer – she describes herself as a prayer warrior.
LOIS PAUL , a resident of The Parkview Community for the past two years, will turn 100 in September. Her children are the most important people in her life. For 25 years, she worked in an administrative position taking dictation at a hospital in Cleveland and led an exercise class at the YMCA in Lorain. She was named Miss Avon Lake in 1939. Her hobbies include puzzles, reading and exercising. She used to take a blind friend on tandem bike rides. Lois credits staying active and having a large church family for her longevity.

CREATE YOUR LEGACY
In this three-part series, we will discover legacy: what it is, how to create it and how to implement it. Follow the entire series in future Spirit magazines.
It is astounding how many people have never arranged a will, denying in death what they affirmed in life. In life most Americans give to support their families, church, communities and even global initiatives. Yet they fail to arrange any gifts for their charitable causes they support and even fail to plan for their families in a meaningful way. This has resulted in over $49 billion dollars, largely funded by unclaimed assets in individual’s estates, sitting in state’s unclaimed fund accounts today. These dollars will eventually, if not claimed, be transferred to the states permanently. Now if just 56 percent (the percentage of American’s who give to charity annually) was instead purposefully directed, that would save $27.4 billion from the government. If these individuals had just given 10 percent to charity, that would have provided over $2.7 billion to our nation’s charities.
We all have been blessed in different ways, whether through time, talents or resources. It is how we use these gifts that define us and define our legacy. For Jack and Barb it was their “lifelong practice to give, save, spend.” You can learn a lot about a person by their words, but to quote Abraham Lincoln “Actions speak louder than words.” For them they really lived out their faith and putting God’s WILL in their Will.
WHAT IS YOUR LEGACY?
This may seem to be a simple enough question, but to anyone who has contemplated the totality of his or her life and lifetime, the response can be daunting. Legacy is a word filled with a depth of meaning. Webster’s definition is “something that is handed down or remains from a previous generation or time” and
Legacy planning is an important process that allows families to pass their values along with their valuables onto those they care deeply about
To learn more about discovering your legacy and how you can support those you care about, regardless the size of your estate, contact Gloria Hurwitz, Vice President of Advancement at 740.751.8702 or ghurwitz@uchinc.org. United Church Homes offers its friends a complimentary and confidential, values-based planning service provided by Thompson & Associates.

“money or property that is left to someone in a will.”
One way our parents and grandparents created legacies was by simply practicing the values and traditions that their ancestors practiced for generations. In some instances, they also left financial legacies to their families and charities. So, legacies are created by living by a certain set of values, raising our families a certain way, practicing our faith or religious rituals or traditions and more tangibly through estate planning with bequests to loved ones and charities.
DISCOVERING YOUR LEGACY
Discovering your legacy is a process of learning and understanding the fullness and richness of your passion. This usually starts with “big picture” ideas and feelings about the legacies you want to leave. As you start to craft the details of your dreams and the resources to be used to implement those wishes, legal complexities can arise, and logistical obstacles and challenges may emerge. Navigating these details allows you to adjust as you continue the journey to “discovering your legacy.” Likely, this discovery leads you to realize your love and desire for persons you care about, their lives and relationships and the causes and potential solutions to larger social issues including the laws of the land that set the boundaries for your planning process.
Comfort and Joy with a Splash of “Ooh Aah”
By: Gloria Hurwitz, Vice President of Advancement
“Jack and I were very blessed. We worked hard and gave back because that’s what the Lord calls us to do. Our lifelong practice was: Give, Save, Spend. This practice is very important because it’s in giving that you receive.”
Meet my friend Barb who has lived 88 years! I’m honored to have developed a special friendship with Barb that grew from a professional relationship when she and her husband Jack became new donors to The Trinity Community at Fairborn in 2019.
Jack was a recent resident as Barb became unable to continue care for him at home. The Trinity Community at Fairborn is near their home where they lived for more than 50 years.
Barb is an unassuming, very approachable and humble person. She often describes herself as “a simple girl from the country” as she considers her roots in rural Shelby, Ohio. But don’t confuse unassuming with unaware. Barb is smart as a whip, a fierce, independent thinker, candid, an active listener and keen observer of people with an incredibly sharp intuition for character.
I’ll never forget that first meeting when Jack and Barb stated, “we want to make a donation for something to benefit the residents.” Since Barb spent every day at Trinity at Fairborn with Jack, she quickly realized that many residents didn’t have family or frequent visitors. They decided together to buy Christmas gifts for all the residents. Jack and Barb’s donation brought Christmas joy to all.
Barb’s daily visits with Jack resulted in us seeing each other often when I visited the community. I noticed that Barb was busy forging relationships with residents, their families and care team members. Daily, she observed the compassionate care Jack received and was grateful. His comfort was priority for Barb and allowed her to go home each evening with peace in her heart.

Jack and Barb
In March of 2020, the global pandemic and associated visitation restrictions prevented Barb from visiting Jack. This was extremely difficult for both. However, Barb and Jack talked daily and she assured him that she was safe at home and was reassured that he, too, was safe.
Soon after the grand opening of the spa room, in anticipation of Jack’s upcoming 90th birthday in February 2021, Barb called me to ask me how much a new bus would cost. She and Jack were interested in doing something to honor his special birthday. After some discussion with staff about the features they would like, she and Jack donated the funds to purchase a new bus. This news brought incredible joy to the staff who would be using the bus to transport residents. Sadly, Jack passed away before the bus arrived, but in April 2021, the new bus was dedicated in his honor and memory in a special celebration. Jack was a beloved resident at the community and is greatly missed by all.
They chatted about experiences and shared observations about Trinity at Fairborn. Barb often called me to share those conversations. I knew that Jack really enjoyed “a good shower” and she told me they wanted to help update the aging tub room and offered a generous donation to transform the conventional tub room into a contemporary spa offering beautiful amenities (including a towel warmer). This new room offered an exceptional shower and bath experience culminating in the ultimate joy and comfort of a warm towel.
As the pandemic persisted, isolation was hard for everyone including Barb. She had a lot of time to “ponder”, and I knew from past experience when she is pondering, it usually means she has another idea for a project. She became interested in making another donation that she knew would offer joy to the staff. She wanted to replace the aging nurse call system and provide modern technology that offers the nurses more efficiencies and would provide easier access to families trying to talk to their loved ones. This new, noteworthy gift offers a substantive improvement in service that will benefit generations of residents and families.
I’m in awe of Barb’s extreme generosity and her love for The Trinity Community at Fairborn. As friends, we spend a lot of time talking and one day I asked her “why do you do what you do?”
She answered, “people who are at the end of their life deserve the best life has to offer in whatever home environment they live and that home should provide comfort and joy.”
It’s that inspiration that brought Barb to her latest idea. She wants to create a legacy as an example of the wonderful life she and Jack shared. She has made a transformational gift to support an interior makeover for The Trinity Community at Fairborn that she so dearly loves. As only Barb can express, “get rid of the ugly beige walls and bring in colors of joy.” And, because she is adamant about creating an entrance that offers an immediate “ooh aah” guests will be wooed with three exquisite, tiered crystal chandeliers lining the entryway that will brighten their arrival and welcome them to the gem that is The Trinity Community at Fairborn. Barb’s legacy includes “putting The Trinity Community at Fairborn on the map” to ensure that local families are aware of and seek this destination for their loved ones.
Thank you, Barb, for your friendship, extreme generosity, love, vision and commitment to comfort and joy with a splash of “ooh aah.”

I am pleased to serve as Chair of the United Church Homes Board of Directors. When I joined the Board, I already knew I was going to be working with a caring, dynamic and innovative community of people. I was not disappointed. And then the pandemic struck.
I don’t think anyone could have imagined a potentially more disruptive, uncertain and isolating time than 2021 – indeed, than the past two years. UCH residents and staff have been faced with unprecedented challenges and rapidly changing conditions on virtually a daily basis. When dealing with any unexpected crisis, it can be tempting to set aside the vision and values which have defined an organization in the best of times. But, it is also the ultimate test of mission when the people who define an organization double down to embrace that vision and values as a source of strength.
The people of UCH make me proud. I am humbled when I consider their incredible efforts this past year. UCH continues to build community, expand, innovate and collaborate. UCH continues to expand low to middle-income housing offerings to serve those who too frequently are left without affordable options. UCH acquired United Church Homes - The Polaris Community, a middle market housing community in the Columbus area. UCH established a subsidiary, UCH Ventures, in order to fund future growth opportunities. UCH Management added new management contracts to serve more residents in Tennessee and Ohio.
UCH continued to make remarkable progress in developing and managing its human resources. The organization continues to advance its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program and leverage the revised MIT living wage benchmarks to increase starting wages to higher levels. UCH works to strengthen our already impressive cadre of talent by adding even more high-level expertise to all areas of the organization.
UCH continues to innovate with service coordination offerings and digital services for older adults. UCH’s collaboration with the MIT Age Lab places us at the forefront of this effort. The organization continues to build and expand its fundraising, to grow, manage and realign its assets and properties. In the midst of a profoundly disruptive pandemic, the people of UCH have never strayed from their core mission – to transform aging by building a culture of community, wholeness and peace. They have never lost sight of the people we are here to serve.
On behalf of the UCH Board of Directors, I want to thank all of the donors, volunteers, staff and leadership of UCH for their dedication to this important work. We honor you. May God continue to bless this ministry and all those whom we serve.

Uncompensated Care
For the 12 months ending December 31, 2021
United Church Homes has been celebrating the Spirit of older adults for more than a century. The nonprofit, faith-inspired organization is one of the nation’s largest providers of senior living services, with more than 1,800 dedicated staff serving about 9000 residents in our owned and managed communities. Our network extends to 80 senior living communities in 14 states and two Native American nations. UCH is in covenant with the United Church of Christ and welcomes residents of all faiths.
Through our residential services, in 2021, we provided over $11 million of uncompensated charity care that was not reimbursed by user fees or government funding.

A Family Affair
Beatrice “Beanie” Smith, a resident of The Parkvue Community since 2013, would wear her favorite color pink, sit in the lobby next to the fireplace, smiling and greeting everyone that would go by. A people person, not an activity would go by without her being there, participating and laughing with the other residents.
“It didn’t matter what the activity was, she just wanted to be with people,” said Samantha Williams, Activities Coordinator.
Her favorite person, though, was her granddaughter Annee, who is a volunteer at the community. “Annee and Beanie had a special bond and would share stories and memories with the whole neighborhood,” said Williams.
missed the opportunity to offer a compliment or let you know just how much you were appreciated. We shared laughs, hugs and tears and I knew each emotion was genuine. They were people you wanted to be around to share their pure love for Parkvue Community and our mission to care for older adults.”
This letter comes as a sincere “thank you” to the United Church Homes’ Parkvue Community. On November 10, 2021, our Mom/Mother-in-law/ and Grandma passed away. Over her eight year stay at Parkvue, the last three years spent in the memory ward (Follett), we witnessed first-hand the genuine care and compassion shown to her by those in charge of her care. She was the recipient of unmeasured kindness and respect, and, at all times, her dignity in every phase remained intact. It was always such a blessing to our family, and we were certain that her well-being mattered to the staff. Her slipping away from us as a result of Alzheimer’s Disease, and the challenging behaviors that ensued, never lessened when it came to the care she received. The staff was exemplary, and, were regularly informed of how she was doing and consulted as to changes in her care.
That same kindness and compassion was also show to us. It meant so much.
Know that Mr. Dan Miller has done an outstanding job in keeping staff and residents safe during this time of Covid. It was quite apparent that safety was of great importance to him, and it speaks highly of his leadership.
Melanie Smoot, also went above and beyond in her assistance to us regarding the financial aspect of Beanie’s care, and Tess Miller and staff provided the best care possible at all times.
Our family’s experience with Parkvue over the years was a true blessing, and we will be forever grateful. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Beanie’s son Jim and his wife Linda became very involved with the community while Beanie was a resident and their daughter Annee was volunteering. “They are so pleasant to staff, treating us like family of their own,” said Williams. “Jim and Linda are always so supportive.”
Shannon Graver, Resident Services Manager said, “Jim and Linda always had kind words for other residents and team members. They never
After Beanie passed in Nov. 2021, Jim and Linda sent a handwritten letter to Rev. Dr. Kenneth Daniel, President and CEO of United Church Homes praising The Parkvue Community for its care of their mother.
Beanie’s granddaughter Annee is a 2017 UCH Spirit Award recipient for her volunteer service to The Parkvue Community.

Resident-Hero Honored for Extraordinary Military Service
The Chapel Hill Community resident Guy Atkinson, recently met with his closest friends for dinner at Massillon Eagles #190, as he’s done for many years. But this time was special as he was honored and celebrated for dedicated service to his country as a soldier in World War II.
Retired Massillon (Ohio) Municipal Judge Richard Kettler presented Atkinson with a mayoral proclamation declaring December 10, 2021 “Guy Atkinson Day.” He also was presented with a beautiful handmade quilt from the Quilts of Valor Foundation in thanks for his service, sacrifice and valor so many years ago. A reporter was on hand to capture Atkinson’s story which was published in the local newspaper, the Massillon Independent.
Atkinson is quick with a joke about his service and clearly uncomfortable being referred to as a hero. But he has much to be proud of, including being awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, French Croix de Guerrero, ETO Ribbon with two battle stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge for his service as a rifleman in the 3rd Infantry, 30th Regiment, Company E.
The young soldier was wounded by machine gun fire while fighting in the mountains of eastern France, captured by the German Army and became a prisoner of war with several thousand others in Stalag VII-A.
said. “Six days a week they trucked us into the city to clean up the bombedout streets of Munich” which were repeatedly targeted by Allied Forces.
Atkinson’s six months of suffering ended when Stalag VII-A was liberated in 1945. He and his fellow POWs were flown from Germany to France where they were cleaned, clothed, fed and treated for injuries and disease. Once rehabilitated, Atkinson and others boarded a ship for the 11-day journey home, docking in Boston where the USO was there to greet them.
Through years of seeing death and destruction, Atkinson developed empathy for others and “felt like doing something for humankind.”
Tapping into his GI Bill benefits, he attended a mortuary science college in Cleveland, graduating in 1950 and beginning his career as a funeral director.
Married and widowed twice, Atkinson moved with his daughter Betsy to The Chapel Hill Community after he retired.
Atkinson was just 19 years old when he enlisted in the Army in 1943, following in the footsteps of his older brother. He and his six brothers all served in the military – five in WWII and two in the Korean War.
“Initially, we lived in unheated wooden barracks,” Atkinson said. “When the barracks reached full capacity, they set up a huge tent to accommodate additional prisoners. We were cold and constantly hungry — there was very little food – and infested with lice. I took one shower in six months, and left the camp wearing the same clothes I arrived in.”
When asked how the POWs occupied themselves hour after hour and day after day, Atkinson chuckled. “We worked every day but Sunday,” he
He’s proud of his service but like so many WWII veterans is humble, referring to the soldiers who gave their lives in service to their country as the greatest heroes.
“Guy is a very kind man,” said Chapel Hill’s Director of Marketing, Jerry Martin. “He’s well respected throughout Massillon and he and Betsy are cherished members of The Chapel Hill Community.

“We had lots of stories to share with one another when we got home from the war,” Atkinson said adding,“I’m not sure they were all true!”

UCH Welcomes New Hires, Congratulates Those Earning Promotions
UCH is pleased to welcome Tiffany Affolter who joined United Church Homes Management last fall as Director of Business Development. With a bachelor’s degree in long-term health care administration from Ohio University and 25 years of experience working in the senior living sector, she brings a wealth of knowledge. Her initial focus has been on lease up of The Polaris Community and she hopes to develop a playbook for opening future middle market communities.
“I am very familiar with UCH and its mission and am particularly interested in supporting the organization’s strategic growth goals in the middle market,” Affolter said. “I appreciate UCH for its focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, and am happy to be part of a team that’s so dedicated to its residents.”
Affolter works closely with Kim Bowyer who was recently hired as Executive Director at The Polaris Community. Bowyer holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Bowling Green State University and brings more than 30 years of experience in healthcare to her new role. She embraces UCH’s commitment to helping older adults live abundantly.
“Being part of a large organization is beneficial to our residents,” Bowyer said. “We have access to private duty services through UCH Cares and offer lots of opportunities for resident engagement. I’m grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received and appreciate that UCH employees truly embrace the organization’s mission.”
Congratulations to Joshua Kerr who was recently promoted from Assistant Administrator at The Chapel Hill Community to Administrator. Kerr is a graduate of Kent State University where he majored in human development and family studies with a concentration in nursing home administration. The second half of his college internship was spent working at The Chapel Hill Community with his preceptor Debbie Durbin, executive director at the community.
“I wouldn’t trade my internship experience for anything,” Kerr said. “UCH is sincere in its ministry. I grew up in a Christian household and embrace UCH’s mission and values. My biggest challenge has been managing the ever-changing protocols throughout the pandemic and my greatest reward has been experiencing the spirit of comradery among staff –even during such difficult times.”
Greg Koller, employed by UCH since April 2019, was recently promoted from Facilities Manager to Director of Capital Projects and Construction, serving the affordable housing communities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in construction management, with a minor in business, from Kent State University. With five years of experience working for a large affordable housing real estate company, he is well-positioned to oversee more than 60 UCH communities in 13 states.
“ UCH maintains its properties well, but most are 20 to 30 years old and will require some improvements,” Koller said. “I work closely with Cheryl (Wickersham) whose responsibilities include obtaining financing for large projects, and with the maintenance technicians who serve as eyes and ears within UCH’s affordable housing communities. We all take a lot of pride in the organization’s mission, vision and core values, and in ensuring that our communities are well maintained.”

When The Going Gets Tough, UCH Staff Get Going
The winter storm that hit Ohio and other states in early February created challenges, but United Church Homes (UCH) staff rose to the occasion to ensure residents received the same level of quality care provided every day.
In anticipation of severe weather, The Chapel Hill Community Executive Director Debbie Durbin, pulled together key staff for a review of the emergency plan and to anticipate and address potential challenges. The priority was to make sure all the food and supplies needed to care for residents and staff were on-hand, and to consider every potential problem that could occur including loss of power and staff shortages. Mandatory meetings were held the next day to inform staff of plans put into place and solicit volunteers who would spend the night and provide transportation for other staff if needed.
The night before the storm hit hard, with 12 members of the The Chapel Hill Community team staying onsite overnight. Another transported stranded staff to work and back home at the end of their shifts.
“We worked alongside the direct care staff, helping wherever needed,” Durbin said. “We served meals,
passed meds, provided direct care and in the middle of all that worked to get our own jobs done and ensured there was staff for the next shift. I am filled with a sense of awe and humility by their extraordinary commitment.”
“I am so proud to be a part of this very dedicated and hardworking community of people,” she continued. “And I now have a greater appreciation for the sincere love and care they have for the residents and their loyalty to one another.”
The Parkvue Community was also impacted by the storm, with staff demonstrating their commitment to residents by overcoming challenges. Four employees spent the night and six members of the team provided transportation to and from work for more than 30 employees over the two-day period.
“What’s so beautiful about where we work is that everyone is so willing to do whatever it takes to serve and provide care to our residents,” said The Parkvue Community Senior Executive Director, Dan Miller. “We all pulled together to support residents and one another.”
“One employee’s husband plowed the parking lot a second time to ensure access if EMS was needed and to improve safety for team members
as they arrived and departed before and after their shifts,” he continued. “I’m fortunate to work with such a dedicated group of people and appreciate the support their family members provided.”
That same level of commitment is found in equal measure in UCH’s managed communities. Anna Gleaves, admissions and marketing director at Mansfield Memorial Homes, is an example of how UCH’s mission runs deep through its communities where employees go to great lengths to serve residents.
Chief Executive Officer, Miles Parsons at UCH-managed, Mansfield Memorial Homes, said Anna Gleaves is committed to going the extra mile. “Like so many employees, Anna is completely dedicated to helping with whatever may arise for the wellbeing of our residents.”
“I am so proud at the level of commitment demonstrated by staff throughout our many communities every day,” President and Chief Executive Officer Rev. Dr. Kenneth Daniel said. “Our people are what makes UCH so extraordinary and I am deeply grateful for the compassionate care they provide to those we are honored to serve even during the most difficult of times.”
unitedchurchhomes.org | SPRING 2022 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | 35
In total, UCH donated $11,477 in donated expenses to other organizations. The Chapel Hill Community partners with Trinity United Church of Christ in Canal Fulton to support a meal outreach program.

2021 Community Benefits Report
United Church Homes serves more than 9,000 older adults in its owned and managed communities with more than 80 senior living and affordable housing communities in 14 states. Employees at each of these locations are embracing our vision, mission and values daily in their roles as well as giving back their time and resources to the communities in which they work.
Through 31,331 staff hours, UCH employees provided leadership with associated organizations and partners whose missions align with ours. This report highlights a few of the ways in which our employees gave back.
In addition to providing sponsorship support, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Daniel, president and chief executive officer, volunteered technical support with the first virtual General Synod of the United Church of Christ.
Amy Kotterman, Director of Customer Experience, served as the preceptor for five Medical Dietetics student interns at The Fairhaven Community.
Dan Miller, Executive Director at The Parkvue Community, serves as a volunteer on the Erie County Foundation Scholarship Committee and Kim Sweitzer-Thorp, Director of Nursing at The Trinity Community at Beavercreek, gave a presentation on “COVID-19 in Long-term Care” at an Ohio conference.
Monetary donations of $58,212 were provided to support various community events. Sponsorships for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Sandusky, Marion and Marietta are included in this amount, as well as the support of the Fairborn Pride Festival in June.
Nearly 1,000 hours were logged for opportunities for our communities to safely provide space for area programs. For instance, the community room at Spoon River Towers returned to offering space daily for a congregate lunch meal program through the local Area Agency on Aging.
Even as we continued to follow protocols and observe guidelines and restrictions during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff of United Church Homes continued to find ways to serve the larger communities in which we live and work.
