Dear Friends,

As we reflect on the past year and look forward to the future, I am filled with gratitude for the journey we have shared together. In the pages of this annual report issue of Spirit magazine, you will find stories that highlight the unwavering spirit of our organization and the individuals who make it possible.

The theme of this issue, “Nurturing Growth and Embracing Change,” encapsulates the essence of our journey. In the face of challenges and uncertainties, we have not only persevered, but thrived. We have embraced change as an opportunity for growth and innovation. And through it all, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to nurturing the well-being of those we serve.

I am inspired by the resilience of our 90-plus communities, the dedication of our staff members and the support of our donors. Together, we have achieved milestones and overcome challenges. And these achievements serve as a testament to the dedication of our team, who continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in pursuit of our mission.

In this issue, we take the opportunity to celebrate the generosity of our donors, whose support and commitment have been vital to our success. Their contributions, both big and small, have played an important role in sustaining our mission-driven work.

As we celebrate these successes, let us also look ahead with optimism for the future. Together, we stand on the threshold of new possibilities, new adventures and new opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

In the pages that follow, I invite you to explore stories of transformation, growth, and community that define our organization. May they serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement in the next chapter of our journey together.

Thank you for your commitment to our mission. Together, we are building a brighter future.

With gratitude,

Radiant Alliance to Bring Transformational Change

TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE. It’s a lofty goal, but one that the founding members of the newly created Radiant Alliance are fully committed to and confident in their ability to achieve.

America’s existing healthcare and support for individuals with complex chronic clinical, emotional and social needs often leaves them underserved and at risk, as they try to navigate and access services on their own. The consequences are profound: a lower quality of life and shorter life expectancy for those individuals, limited effectiveness in delivering services and an increased financial burden on the healthcare system.

That’s why three dynamic, nonprofit organizations aligned in response –United Church Homes (UCH), Metta Healthcare and Genacross Lutheran Services – have joined together as founding members of Radiant Alliance.

Created last year, Radiant Alliance is a dynamic consortium of reputable nonprofit health and human services organizations with decades of experience and expertise in the supportive care and housing sectors. The alliance promises to be so much more than the sum of its parts – creating a synergy that will have a profound impact on the healthcare landscape.

What makes the relationship between the three founding partners so great is close alignment of their individual missions, core values and cultures. They share an unwavering commitment to innovation, compassionate care and the power of human connection.

For more than a century, UCH has provided quality housing and services to older adults. It currently serves nearly 7,000 residents in its more than 90 owned and managed communities in 15 states and two Native American nations – from independent and assisted living, to life plan communities providing nursing, rehab and memory care. It also provides valuable support services to older adults who prefer to remain in their homes through its Naviguide program. Closely affiliated with the United Church of Christ, UCH is a provider of healthcare and senior living services with a mission to transform aging.

Metta Healthcare’s mission is about transforming the experience of health care by creating and providing innovative, world-class solutions that support patients and families through superior care and services. It is the parent company of Ohio’s Hospice and Pure Healthcare, annually serving more than 18,000 patients throughout Ohio by providing long-term direct healthcare for those with chronic illnesses or in need of end-of-life care.

Genacross Lutheran Services has been serving people in need since 1860. Today, nearly 3,000 people of all ages throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan benefit from Genacross programs and services that foster compassionate care and wellness. It provides a spectrum of care – not only to older adults, but also to at-risk youth. Genacross is a faithbased social ministry affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and recognized by The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.

“United Church Homes and Ohio’s Hospice formed a successful partnership in 2018,” said Rev. Dr. Ken Daniel, UCH Chief Executive Officer. “I knew and respected Ohio’s Hospice CEO Kent Anderson and was receptive to his vision to bring nonprofits together to address the needs of a growing body of people on Medicaid.”

Pure Healthcare’s partnerships with managed care insurance companies served as the model in creating Radiant Alliance – expanding the concept to bring more nonprofit organizations to the Medicaid space and providing a seamless web of support services.

“The unprecedented COVID pandemic disrupted the normal cadence of providing healthcare,” Anderson said. “Against that backdrop, we now face hyperinflation. Standalone providers are finding it much harder to remain sustainable with rising costs and reimbursements that have failed to keep pace with inflation.”

Although cost savings is a tangible benefit to forming partnerships among providers, that was not the driving force behind the creation of Radiant Alliance. The number one goal is to develop and implement models of care for individuals with complex health care needs that will produce better results.

“Over time, we’ll develop shared services,” said Genacross President/CEO, Rick Marshall. “But our top priority is developing models of care that lead to better outcomes. We believe that Radiant Alliance will be a national prototype for how governmentfunded health and human services can be effectively and efficiently utilized to improve quality of care and life for those we serve.”

Each of the partner organizations will maintain their own identity and governing structure. Upon regulatory approval, Radiant Alliance will become an affiliate of CareSource – a nonprofit, nationally recognized managed care organization established in 1989 that now serves more than 2.1 million members. The partnership is evolving from an idea to early implementation with Rev. Daniel serving as its CEO, Anderson as president and Marshall as treasurer. The broader goal is to recruit additional nonprofit organizations to join the Alliance, working together to deliver quality of life and care.

“Growth is a priority for nonprofit organizations because it allows us to expand reach,” Rev. Daniel said. “UCH, Metta Healthcare and Genacross are all about providing quality care and support to a greater number of people, particularly those who are underserved. We want to help people live their lives to the fullest. This partnership makes each organization stronger and represents an opportunity for each to better serve more people in need.”

In the Summer and Fall of last year, United Church Homes (UCH) expanded its reach, serving more individuals in nine new communities: two owned, and seven managed.

The impetus behind UCH’s growth strategy is quite simple: to serve and help more older adults live abundant lives. Its faith-based legacy is open and affirming, and its communities are highly diverse, serving seniors from every walk of life: Native American Indians, people of Hispanic heritage, individuals with disabilities, and those who identify as LBGTQ+. Its affordable housing, middle market and life plan communities all serve diverse aging populations.

The Hamlet on Darby is a newly built, vibrant middle market community located in Plain City, Ohio – a suburb of Columbus. Located on nine wooded acres alongside Big Darby Creek and three metro parks connected with walking paths. It features beautiful villas and townhomes with attached garages, covered front porches and plenty of safety features. The community boasts a countryside feel with easy access to all central Ohio has to offer.

The Parkvue Community on Catawba Island –formerly known as the Vineyard on Catawba Island is also an owned community, acquired last year. It serves as a satellite to UCH’s Parkvue life plan community in Sandusky just 20 miles away. Featuring affordable housing units and independent living apartments and condos, it offers endless opportunities for development with 57 acres in a picturesque setting appealing to active adults.

“We build communities and seek out partners that align with our mission, vision and core values,” said Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer Terry Spitznagel. “Like UCH, the former owner was a faith-based nonprofit organization providing a range of services to older adults. The acquisition was seamless, without disruption to residents and staff, and is a natural fit in UCH’s portfolio.”

With a growth strategy focused on both owned and managed communities, UCH was also pleased to enter into management agreements with three communities that also align well with its mission, vision and core values: Friends Fellowship Community, St. Mary’s Development Corporation and Wexner Heritage Village.

“That alignment is a key factor in the decision to provide management support,” Spitznagel said. “We’ve experienced 38 percent growth over the past three years in our portfolio of managed communities, but we choose our partners very carefully. For each partnership we form, we opt not to pursue a half-dozen. We’re very deliberate in our decision-making – it must be a good fit. We want to preserve each community’s legacy, enhancing rather than changing what they bring to the relationship.”

The Friends Fellowship Community, located in Richmond, Indiana, is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community founded in 1965. Serving in the Quaker tradition, it offers independent and assisted living, memory care and a health care center.

“We engaged in strategic planning with the Friends Fellowship’s board – not only to identify strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats, but to better understand their needs and preferences,” Spitznagel said. “They share UCH’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion which is one of the reasons it’s such a good fit.”

UCH also entered into an agreement with St. Mary Development Corporation, founded in the Catholic tradition, to manage six affordable housing communities in Dayton: Hoover Cottages, Lofts at Hoover, Lyons Place I, Lyons Place II, McBride Place and Twin Towers Place.

“COVID has had a profound impact on our health care system, and we’re still feeling it today,” said Dan Miller, executive director of corporate compliance and UCH Management. “It’s been particularly challenging for standalone organizations. UCH can provide much needed support that allows our partners to maintain their own governance, core values and culture.”

Wexner Heritage Village (WHV) has also engaged UCH to provide management support to its community in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in and inspired by the Jewish faith, its campus offers independent and assisted living accommodations, as well as skilled nursing, memory care and hospice support.

Shared values rather than shared faith was a priority in choosing a partner, as was selecting a partner with a proven track record of success. UCH and WHV are closely aligned as nonprofit legacy providers, in mission and culture, and in their honoring of all faiths.

“Members of United Church Homes’ board of directors and staff who serve in senior leadership positions are forward thinking,” Spitznagel said. “We’re positioning the organization to continue its legacy into the next 100 years, and we see growth – in both owned and managed communities – as key to doing it. Growth is challenging, but it’s also exciting! We feel called to do the work we do.”

Dividing Top Leadership Responsibilities for Continued

Following more than a year of discussion among the United Church Homes (UCH) board and staff leaders, the position of president and chief executive officer held by Rev. Dr. Ken Daniel for more than a decade has been split into two, with Ken Young assuming the responsibilities and title of president.

Continuing to serve as UCH’s CEO, Rev. Daniel will shift much of his focus to growth and development of the new Radiant Alliance – a dynamic consortium of reputable nonprofit health and human services organizations working together to produce better outcomes for those they serve. He will continue his involvement in UCH’s work in philanthropy, communications, growth and innovation, but will devote significant time to recruiting nonprofit health and human services organizations to become part of Radiant Alliance.

“It’s an interesting, new challenge,” Rev. Daniel said. “I’m fortunate to work with a very forwardthinking board that recognizes the synergistic value of collaboration. They understand that making Radiant Alliance a transformational success will be an evolving process that will ultimately expand and enhance our ability to serve.”

In addition to continuing to serve as UCH’s CEO, Rev. Daniel also serves as CEO for Radiant Alliance. He will work with the founding members to identify new potential partners, serve as a liaison between participating organizations, and network to engage with entities and individuals interested in learning more about Radiant Alliance and the transformational opportunities it offers.

“Radiant Alliance is a central part of our strategic direction,” said UCH Board Chair Karl Ulrich. “It leverages each partner’s individual strengths and is designed to provide a continuum of care that’s seamless from the customer’s perspective. In times of rapid change and evolution, continuity within UCH is critically important.”

“It became quite clear early in our discussions that Ken Young was the obvious best choice to serve as UCH president,” he continued. “Everyone on the board knows Ken extremely well and has great respect for him, as do his peers and subordinates. ‘Servant leader’ best describes his style. We’re fortunate to be able to leverage the talents of both leaders in their respective president and CEO roles.”

Young has worked with United Church Homes since graduating from law school in 1993 and joining a firm that provided legal support to UCH. By the year 2000, his work focused almost exclusively on UCH. He came to know the organization quite well and over time it became apparent that he should leave the law firm – in which he was a partner – to join UCH as general legal counsel, which he did in 2005.

6 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2024 | unitedchurchhomes.org

“I was attracted to United Church Home’s mission,” Young said. “That remains true nearly two decades later. I have a true belief in, and commitment to, our mission and try to always practice and act in alignment with our core values of compassion, hospitality, respect, integrity, stewardship and transparency.”

Young is well-prepared to assume responsibility for overseeing daily operations as the transition to greater responsibility was carefully planned and implemented. Rev. Daniel has served as a mentor to him throughout his 19 years with UCH, and Young is surrounded by a committed, skilled, talented team of senior leaders.

“What I really enjoy about the new role is the opportunities it provides for me to support other members of the team,” Young said. “That’s what charges me up! I want United Church Homes to continue to provide the highest quality of care and best housing for our residents, the best services for older adults living in their own homes, and the best work environment for our employees.”

“It’s an exciting time,” Young continued. “Radiant Alliance has the potential to be truly transformational. Through our forthcoming partnership with CareSource, we see a clear path to continued success for United Church Homes beyond the next 100 years. We see collaboration as the way to make a difference that will lead to better healthcare outcomes.”

“This represents a great opportunity for Ken, UCH and Radiant Alliance,” Rev. Daniel said. “I’m excited to be part of something new and innovative, but I’m also excited for Ken to move beyond mergers, construction and other legal aspects of our work. I see this as an opportunity for Ken to further grow his leadership skills.”

“It feels like my entire career has led to this moment,” Young said. “I welcome the new challenge and am grateful to be supported by a governing board comprised of dynamic, forwardthinking leaders. I’m also fortunate to be surrounded by committed, skilled, talented professionals who share my commitment to those we are so honored to serve.”

UCH EMPLOYEES: We GIVE because we CARE!

Philanthropy is deeply rooted in American culture – Martin Luther King, Jr. said,

“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”

Although few are financially well-positioned to give at the levels of Bill Gates, Mackenzie Scott and Warren Buffet, givers at all levels truly have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Philanthropy can be looked at as one of the cornerstones of a stable society.

The benefits of philanthropy extend beyond those who directly benefit, as giving also enriches the lives of those who contribute to causes in which they believe. Giving contributes to greater overall happiness, lower stress levels and a heightened sense of connection to others.

Corporate giving campaigns aren’t novel, but there’s something quite special about United Church Homes’ (UCH) employee giving campaign: the funds support UCH’s 90-plus communities and those who call them home. Most employee contributions are directed toward seven initiatives: My Community Project; Wishing Well, My Housing Community; the Parker Center for Abundant Aging; Benevolent Care; Employee Emergency Fund; and, Life Enrichment Fund.

The UCH employee giving campaign is an annual event that goes beyond fundraising. It’s also an 8-week-long celebration of the 1,600 individuals who work for UCH.

“Employee appreciation is an important part of the campaign,” said UCH Vice President of Advancement, Gloria Hurwitz. “Team captains are the heart of the campaign’s success. Each community’s celebration is unique, with special themed dress down days, giveaways of UCH swag, prizes and lots of great food. It’s something employees look forward to!”

Last Fall, 67 percent of UCH employees pledged more than $145,000 – a 6.3 percent increase in the number of donors and an increase of 7.5 percent in contributions over the previous year. That’s much stronger support than

the average level of participation, about 40 percent, in most corporate giving campaigns. It demonstrates a high level of commitment among UCH employees at every level of the organizational chart.

“It’s gratifying to know that employees trust UCH to put their donations to good use,” Hurwitz said. “Their commitment to residents goes beyond their employment … they truly care about residents and are so generous in their support.”

Darlene Marrs, who has worked for UCH for more than 40 years, has served as an employee giving campaign team captain for decades. Her enthusiastic support of the campaign is contagious, and she and her fellow employees at The Trinity Community at Beavercreek are very competitive. They focus on trying to out-contribute other communities with 100 percent participation among staff.

8 | UNITED CHURCH HOMES | SPRING 2024 | unitedchurchhomes.org

So, what inspires Marrs and others who are so committed to the campaign?

“For me, I like to see that the residents are well cared for,” Marrs said. “I especially like the benevolent care fund which not only allows residents to remain in their homes when they’re no longer able to pay monthly fees, but also provides additional support for their everyday needs.”

Marrs and other members of the campaign team work with Chef Ashley Warren to host cookouts for employees – one for each shift. It’s something everyone looks forward to and makes employees feel valued and appreciated. Residents also enjoy celebrating staff throughout the 8-week-long campaign.

“Everyone gets into the spirit,” Marrs said. “For the last campaign, we had a dress down day featuring Marvel superheroes, fun hat and sock days, and a day when staff could wear jeans – a treat for those who wear unforms to work each day. Even those who wear scrubs participate.”

Hurwitz and members of the advancement team recently asked several staff members why they give to UCH. Here’s what they had to say:

It’s not enough to help residents on a daily basis … if they have a need and can’t quite make it, it’s nice to know we can give something of our own to help bring joy and life to those residents.

I give because of our residents. I believe in our vision of providing abundant life for older adults in community and one way I know I can participate is to give back. My giving helps our residents live abundantly.

I love helping others – that’s why I give.

I’ve been with UCH for many years and I have seen first-hand what our giving can do to help the residents and the community.

The number one reason so many UCH employees say they give is quite succinct and closely aligns with their decision to be part of UCH’s mission: I give because I care!

Innovating

While all at United Church Homes (UCH) are encouraged to be creative in their thinking, Michael Hughes, who serves as senior executive vice president and chief transformation and innovation officer, is the go-to guy when it comes to thinking outside the box.

Among the creative ideas he’s implemented at UCH over the past two years is the use of humancentered design – an approach to brainstorming and problem solving that honors the perspectives and experiences of internal and external customers.

Soon after joining the UCH team, Hughes piloted a program to demonstrate the benefits of humancentered design, hosting an Idea-AThon for The Parkvue Community residents using a modified version of AARP’s Baldridge Award winning training program. Fifteen residents participated in a two-day session to identify ways to enhance resident life in their community. Among their creative ideas was to develop a pollinator garden a project that has raised more than $30,000 for its development, a great example of residents taking charge and supporting the program for sustainability.

Hughes has facilitated Idea-A-Thon events at The Polaris Community in Columbus and most recently at The Trinity Community at Beavercreek.

Marc Molea, a Polaris resident who participated, enjoyed the experience and is enthusiastic about

for ABUNDANT LIVING

the outcomes. The middle market community attracts active seniors eager to experience all there is to enjoy in the busy surrounding area and beyond.

“The process used for the IdeaA-Thon helped participants be creative in their thinking,” Molea said. “Our activities coordinator does a great job engaging residents, but there’s also a role for residents to play in exploring and planning activities. We’re an active, social group, so our focus has centered around two ideas: Entertainment Express and Welcome Wagon.”

The Polaris Community residents developed a presentation highlighting local entertainment opportunities. They’ve also created their own bulletin board with information on activities: movie showings, afterhours social events, ladies’ ping pong, presentations by residents and others outside the community, a resident talent show and so much more!

“We started with a few ground rules: individual project costs must be no greater than $1,000, the initiative must benefit as many residents as possible, and implementation must be resident driven. Beyond that, no ideas are off limits!”

Human-centered design will continue to be used to engage residents and will be expanded for use with staff – all a part of UCH’s never-ending commitment to helping people LIVE ABUNDANT LIVES!

Weaving TOGETHER: The

DEDICATION of The Polaris Community

Members of the United Church Homes (UCH) family gathered on September 8, 2023 to dedicate The Polaris Community in Columbus, Ohio.

Special guests present that day included: Rev. George Graham, Council of Health and Human Service Ministries, United Church of Christ; Rev. Patricia Battle, Central Southeast Ohio Association, Ohio Conference; Rev. Sigrid Rother, Westerville Community United Church of Christ; Karl Ulrich, Chairman, UCH Board; and The Polaris Community executive director.

“Today, we welcome the covenant promise – a binding between two or more persons or groups that recognizes the spiritual connection between them,” Rev. Dr. Ken Daniel said, before inviting representatives of each of the organizations to receive into covenant relationship with The Polaris Community.

“By these actions, we celebrate the extension of the ministry of United Church Homes into Columbus, Ohio, the Central Southeast Association, the Heartland Conference and the whole United Church of Christ,” Ulrich prayed. “May this community provide care and comfort, abundant living in community, wholeness and peace. And may their service to the church and community be for the building up of the Kingdom of God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

“There is a framed weaving that hangs outside my office door,” said Rev. Daniel. “The ribbons which make up the warp and weft represent the various communities and individuals who work together to create the fabric of United Church Homes. They are a reminder of the ways that we each bring our unique gifts and graces adding to the culture in which the Spirit creates abundant life in our communities.”

Gaye Allen, the first resident to make the new community her home, was invited to join others in weaving ribbons representing The Polaris Community into the tapestry – symbolically demonstrating how individual strands become stronger when woven together and the importance of unity, collaboration and spirituality.

A prayer of blessing was then said by Rev. Battle, with all guests invited to celebrate in the spirit of abundant life.

Rev. Beth Long-Higgins, vice president of engagement and director of the Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging, closed the event with a touching benediction:

May you go with the infusion of Christ’s COMPASSION;

Finding ways to share the gift of HOSPITALITY;

May you celebrate with RESPECT, the diversity gathered in each place;

Allowing INTEGRITY to provide you courage to live God’s intentions for peace;

May you be wise STEWARDS of the gifts God has entrusted to your care; and,

May you be TRANSPARENT that others may see God’s love at work in you.

We give thanks for God’s blessing on us as we work to build God’s vision of abundant life in community.

The Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging (RFPCAA) will host its annual symposium October 4, 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio. The event will offer opportunities to participate in person or virtually.

This year’s theme is Meaning, Purpose and Redefining Retirement , exploring what the next phases of life may hold for aging adults. Most research about retirement in the 21st century has focused exclusively on financial planning – an important consideration given the fact that today’s seniors are living much longer than previous generations.

What hasn’t been adequately explored is the importance of planning beyond finances – finding meaning and purpose in life throughout what could be a 20- to 30year period. Who am I? What gives my life purpose?

“Many people define themselves by their occupation, which may be less relevant after they retire,” said Rev. Beth LongHiggins, United Church Homes (UCH) vice president of engagement and director of the RFPCAA.

“Women who do not pursue careers may define themselves by their relationships, as a wife or mother. Despite the need to redefine oneself later in life, few people plan for retirement beyond assessing their financial situation.”

“Henri Matisse is best known as a painter and sculptor,” she continued. “When ill health prevented his continued work in those mediums, he maintained his passion for creating art, but shifted his focus to the medium of cut paper collage.”

While some older adults may find different ways to pursue their lifelong passion, others may opt to take a different path. As one begins to plan for retirement, it’s important they consider what will be their purpose in the later years of life.

Among the speakers already confirmed for the Fall symposium are Helen Dennis, a nationally recognized leader on issues of aging, employment and the new retirement, and Anna Hall, founder and chief purpose officer with The Purpose Equation.

The RFPCAA symposium promises to be a dynamic, thought-provoking event! Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend – it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Thanks to advances in medicine, public health, housing and food security, we have an additional 20-30 years in average life expectancy. What are the implications for those serving older adults? What are the non-financial consequences for all of us as we look toward our own futures? And how might our society consider new ways of thinking about and living well in our later decades of life?

As Chair of the United Church Homes Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to share my reflections on a busy 2023. Every year presents new challenges and opportunities, and 2023 was certainly no different. Overall, 2023 was also a year of recovery and renewed strength. Through it all, UCH has remained fiercely dedicated to its core mission. This is possible because of UCH’s greatest strength - its people. In 2023, teamwork, creativity and dedication to mission were once again on full display.

In 2023, UCH substantially improved its overall financial performance despite lingering post-COVID headwinds. UCH revenue performance was

strong due to improved occupancy in many communities and effective cost management across the organization. Nonetheless, UCH made the difficult decision to divest itself of The Fairhaven Community. While difficult in the extreme, the move enables UCH to continue to grow and innovate in response to rapidly changing market conditions.

The organization continued to build community, innovate and collaborate – key components of UCH’s longer-term strategic plan. UCH is proud to be one of the founding members of the new Radiant Alliance, a collaboration of organizations in the supportive care and housing sectors. Radiant Alliance is an entirely new and unique business model. This alliance will craft innovative solutions for aging Americans and others with complex health needs. Through Radiant Alliance and other efforts, UCH will also continue to expand its low to middle-income housing offerings to serve those who too frequently are left without affordable options. Radiant Alliance will enable UCH, in collaboration with like-minded nonprofits, to reach new in-need populations.

UCH also continued to expand its creative NaviGuide service line in addition to acquiring two home health licenses. This acquisition will enable UCH to develop and grow new in-home healthcare services. UCH has implemented and grown a human-centered design project to involve its stakeholders, especially residents and staff, in crafting innovative technologies and growing philanthropy.

UCH continued to make progress in developing and managing its human resources. The organization continues to advance its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program and its living wage benchmarks to increase starting wages to higher levels. UCH has also added cadre of talent by adding even more high-level expertise to all areas of the organization.

In 2023, the Board was pleased to promote Rev. Ken Daniel to CEO of both UCH and Radiant Alliance. At the same time, the Board was pleased to promote Ken Young to President of UCH. This leadership restructure recognizes the increasing importance of Radiant Alliance to the long-term growth and development of UCH. Even more, the Board’s action honors the talents of two of the most remarkable leaders with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

On behalf of the UCH Board of Directors, I want to again thank all of the donors, volunteers, staff and leadership of UCH for their dedication to this important work. May God continue to bless this ministry and all those whom we serve.

Uncompensated Care

For the 12 months ending December 31, 2023

United Church Homes has been celebrating the Spirit of older adults for more than a century. The nonprofit, faith-inspired organization is one of the nation’s largest providers of senior living services, with more than 1,800 dedicated staff serving about 9000 residents in its owned and managed communities. The UCH network extends to more than 90 senior living communities in 15 states and two tribal nations. UCH is in covenant with the United Church of Christ and welcomes residents of all faiths.

Through our residential services, in 2023, we provided over $12 million of uncompensated charity care that was not reimbursed by user fees or government funding.

DOROTHY ECKERT: A Gift of God’s Compassion

In the heart of Marion, Ohio, resides a woman whose generosity knows no bounds. Meet Dorothy E. Eckert, a compassionate soul who has been impacting the lives of those around her for decades.

Dorothy’s journey of philanthropy begins in her childhood where she fondly remembers her mother bringing quarts of vegetables to Harvest Home at The Fairhaven Community. Despite her family facing hardships during The Great Depression, Dorothy’s mother instilled in her the value of giving back, even when it is not easy – a lesson that Dorothy carries with her to this day.

Her connection with The Fairhaven Community deepened over the years, fueled by her desire to make a difference in the lives of older adults. From volunteering with the Fairhaven Volunteer Service Group for more than three decades, to serving on the United Church Homes (UCH) Board of Directors, Dorothy’s commitment to the mission of providing affordable housing for older adults remained unwavering.

Driven by her belief in UCH’s mission, Dorothy dedicated herself to advocating for affordable housing, ensuring every resident receives the care and support they deserve. Her passion for the cause led her to visit all 49 (at that time) of UCH’s housing communities, where she witnessed firsthand the profound impact of safe and affordable housing on residents’ lives.

What sets Dorothy apart is her genuine empathy and compassion for those in need. Her holiday tradition of delivering cards and gifts to residents at The Fairhaven Community and now Brownstone Terrace is a testament to her caring nature. From handwritten notes to bags filled with goodies and fresh fruit, Dorothy’s gestures brighten the spirits of residents and remind them they are cherished.

When asked about her dedication to UCH, Dorothy’s answer is simple yet profound: “I just always saw the need.” Her belief in the organization’s mission, coupled with her husband’s philanthropic legacy, fuels her steady support. In stride with this commitment to the organization, Dorothy has made plans for an estate gift thus solidifying her legacy of giving to the older adults we serve.

As Dorothy reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the positive change she has witnessed at UCH over the years. From humble beginnings to a thriving organization, UCH continues to make a difference in the lives of countless individuals, thanks to the generosity and dedication of individuals like Dorothy.

In Dorothy, we find not just a donor, but a shining example of kindness, compassion, and selflessness. Her giving spirit inspires us to make a difference in the lives of others.

To Dorothy Eckert, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for her tireless dedication and constant support. May her legacy gift to UCH continue to brighten the lives of those in need for generations to come. In Dorothy’s words, “You have to leave your legacy somewhere and I believe in the UCH mission!”

CREATE A GIFT THAT LASTS: How To Follow in Dorothy’s Footsteps

Inspired by the story of Dorothy Eckert and her heartwarming legacy? Many of us aspire to make a meaningful impact on our community, just like Dorothy, but may not know where to start. Here’s how you can create a gift that continues to give, long after you’ve shared it.

Service in Action: A Health Fair with Heart

When Jennifer CraftWilliams became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, she knew it would be a life-long commitment to its mission, including to be of “service to all mankind.”

That’s the spirit she brings to work each day as the service coordinator at the Canterbury Crest affordable housing community in Mississippi and the motivation for her recent efforts to hold a health fair for residents.

“I wanted to do a health fair in the community for some time,” Williams said. “I’m fortunate to be connected with knowledgeable, talented women through my sorority, so it made perfect sense to reach out to them for help.”

Recognizing the threat that diabetes poses to Canterbury Crest residents and understanding that transportation can be a barrier for some in seeking access to health care, Williams and her sorority sisters made a plan to bring experts into the community.

The event featured three doctors, including a nephrologist, who are Williams’ sorority sisters.

They presented a diabetes clinic, helping residents understand the connection between diabetes, kidney failure and dialysis, eye and foot problems and hypertension. They helped residents understand the importance of nutrition in limiting one’s risk, answered residents’ general questions and met one-onone with residents who needed more information and guidance.

One of Williams’ sorority sisters serves as director of nursing at Northwest Community College and recruited nursing students to participate, checking residents’ blood pressure and glucose levels. Another who works in hospice care also participated.

“Residents loved the event,” Williams said. “It was scheduled for 90 minutes but lasted three hours! My sorority sisters were so respectful of residents, putting them at ease and speaking on complex medical issues at their level.”

Despite a tragic loss she suffered four months prior to the health fair – the death of her husband, who was her high school sweetheart, in an auto accident – she made sure residents were still well-served, continuing to plan the health fair. Although she took a bit of time off to grieve, there was no need for her to be concerned that the time away might be reflected in residents’ annual feedback on her performance. They recognize and clearly appreciate her dedication to them and gave her glowing reviews.

“Jennifer is such a great advocate for her residents and is always willing to go above and beyond in serving them,” said Kim Yoder, United Church Homes’ Engage/NaviGuide Program Director. “She and her sorority coordinated a wonderful event of great benefit to the residents.”

Passport Adventures Community Briefs

Executive Chef Ashley Warren likes to change things up a bit in the kitchen for residents of The Trinity Community at Beavercreek.

Last year, she introduced United Church Homes (UCH) to an opportunity to engage residents through a program she initiated in other communities: Passport!

As the name suggests, it’s an opportunity for residents to experience the excitement of learning about other cultures – their customs, languages, foods, music … what makes them interesting and unique.

Working closely with the community’s Joyologist and staff involved in coordinating activities and marketing, Warren brings a creative touch through themed events hosted as happy hours or as part of the main dining menu.

Last year, Passport took residents around the world, visiting Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, China, India, Bermuda Island, Spain, Germany and Thailand.

“The kitchen staff all enjoy doing something different and fun,” Warren said. “And residents are more likely to try new foods if they’re offered as a happy hour appetizer or something unique added to the menu and there’s a celebration around it. It’s not just about the food, but food does bring people together.”

“We reach out to residents to see if they or their family members have traveled to our next destination or have ancestors from there,” said Michelle Faulkner, The Trinity Community at Beavercreek’s activities director. “One of our residents shared what she’d learned about China from her travels there and another wore lederhosen and did a traditional cultural dance when we visited Germany. Everyone enjoys Passport activities – both residents and staff!”

This year, The Trinity Community at Beavercreek residents and staff will experience a 1920s American Road Trip, visiting New York, Washington, New Orleans, California, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Nevada, Hawaii, Illinois, Texas and Georgia.

“The Passport program brings the community together,” said Amy Kotterman, United Church Homes director of customer experience. “It’s an opportunity for residents and staff to learn about and celebrate other cultures, which aligns with the values of diversity, equity and inclusion which have long been embedded into UCH’s mission and vision.”
