WORKING TOGETHER
TO CREATE
A BRIGHTER
FUTURE. 9
We all win when a child succeeds in school. United Way supports solutions that help ensure all children in our community get the very best start in school and life. United Way is making progress: • Increasing opportunities for parents to develop the skills and access the support they need to nurture their child’s development. • Supporting efforts to improve childcare, and make quality early education more accessible. • Working with community partners to pilot promising early learning innovations and measure their effectiveness.
One result:
10
8% decrease in the number of children at risk for reading failure in the Promise Neighborhoods.

Preparing children to succeed in school and life
Moving families toward greater financial stability Many families are walking a financial tightrope where any misstep can cause them to fall. United Way helps transform that tightrope into a solid path so families have the skills and resource necessary to reach the end of the month with money left over. United Way is making progress: • Connecting unbanked and underbanked workers to mainstream financial products and services. • Supporting efforts to coach working families on the skills needed and resources available to become financially stable. • Increasing opportunities for financial education in the workplace.
One result: Over $6 million in tax refunds to Lane County residents through free tax preparation sites.
United Way is making progress: • Connecting uninsured or underinsured residents to a basic system of health care. • Through a Community Health Worker Program that brings trained health workers out into the community where they are needed. • By supporting Medical Access Programs (MAP), community health centers, safety net clinics, and dental programs.
One result: 15,000 uninsured county residents were connected to regular health care options.
Basic Needs
Health
Connecting uninsured people with basic health care improves their quality of life while reducing the overall cost of health care for everyone.
Food Health Safety Shelter Access to Services Food, shelter, safety, medical care, and access to services are essential to achieving long-term community goals. Families need a stable base before they can hope to build successful lives. United Way understands the important relationship between the Basic Needs that support people now, and the strategic goals that will strengthen our community into the future.
One result: Partner in serving over 4 million supplemental and emergency meals to more than 63,000 county residents in 2009-2010.

Thank you QSL!
Doug Koke, QSL Print Communications
The staff and Board of United Way want to express our appreciation to QSL Print Communications for their long and generous support of the Leadership Booklet and to United Way of Lane County. Over the years, QSL has been a friend to a number of local causes and non-profit programs, allowing them to devote their scarce resources to serving clients. This unselfish support reflects the values that make Lane County a great place to live, and organizations like QSL Print Communications a great partner to have. Thanks Doug, you’re the best!
