COMMUNITY IMPACT

HEALTH

GIVE For 70 years, United Way of Lane County has been an active partner in building a healthier, safer, and supportive community. Over the past year, our donors have invested more than $4 million to support basic needs and strategic initiatives in Education, Income, and Health. To validate that support, the United Way Board of Directors has instituted a Strategic Investment process to ensure that every dollar United Way manages helps children enter school ready to learn, provides neighbors with the health care they need, and allows modest-income working families to become financially stable. • Financial accountability has been built into the investment structure at every point. • Investments are leveraged by grants from other funders, by volunteers, and the aligned efforts of many partners. • Our volunteers and community partners establish specific goals to achieve by the year 2020, backed by research-based strategies. • Partners supporting our goal in Health have led to its achievement eight years ahead of schedule.

14

United Way is more than a pass-through mechanism for dollars distributed to agencies. United Way is a neutral community table where partners work together to accomplish more than any one of them can accomplish alone. Programs applying for funding must pass financial capability and program management scrutiny and meet periodic reporting requirements to be considered. Financial investments are made because a program can achieve defined outcomes.

VOLUNTEER

United Way has always been a voice for those in need, and in 2011, that voice has expanded to include the interests and commitments of our whole community.

Support comes in many forms.Volunteerism, whether once a year at the United Way Day of Caring, or every week through an aligned program, is a way of turning time into a priceless resource.

• United Way of Lane County is one of only eleven organizations selected nationwide to participate in a United Way Worldwide Mobilization Group geared toward building community involvement and partnerships to increase the financial sufficiency of local families. • Hundreds of Lane County residents are being asked to define the kind of community they are willing to step up and work to achieve. • Leaders in the public and private sectors are being asked to listen and lend their voice to the community’s call for action. Bruce Heldt, the 2011 Annual Campaign Chair, has dubbed his campaign theme the “2020 Promise to the Community” in recognition of the need to focus voices as well as dollars on achieving long-term success on issues that matter in education, income, and health. Lend your voice by telling someone how you Live United or why you invest in the future of our community.

• Even the most modest estimates of volunteer hours invested in Lane County are in the hundreds of thousands of hours every year. • The Retired Senior Volunteer Program, hosted by United Way of Lane County, provides more than 480 volunteers working out of 42 different locations. • Volunteer tax preparers helped Lane County residents bring nearly $7 million in eligible tax refunds back into the local economy. • United Way helped recruit more than 500 volunteers to help staff Project Homeless Connect at the Lane County Fairgrounds. • The 2010 Summer Reading spot logged more than 200 hours of volunteer time reading to over 300 children at Willamalane Park Swim Center. One hour of your time can make a real difference to someone in need in our community. And volunteering can be as simple as logging on to our Volunteer Opportunities link at www.unitedwaylane.org. There’s a volunteer need out there that’s just right for your interests and availability.

This booklet is made possible by the extraordinary generosity of QSL Print Communications.

Thank you QSL!

Doug Koke, QSL Print Communications

The staff and Board of United Way want to express our appreciation to QSL Print Communications for their long and generous support of the Leadership Booklet and to United Way of Lane County. Over the years, QSL has been a friend to a number of local causes and non-profit programs, allowing them to devote their scarce resources to serving clients. This unselfish support reflects the values that make Lane County a great place to live, and organizations like QSL Print Communications a great partner to have. Thanks Doug, you’re the best!
