ISSUE

In Lane County, 841 of 3,094 children (1 in 3) enter Kindergarten at high risk for failure to learn to read by third grade.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is an effective tool to keep families out of poverty. Yet the IRS estimates that 20-25% of those eligible fail to claim their credit.

More than 56,000 Lane County adults aged 19 to 64 (over 24%) were uninsured.

More than 1 in 3 Lane County residents (about 133,000) were eligible for emergency food assistance.

STRATEGY Increase access to and use of free and low-cost tax preparation services.

Increase access to programs that support early literacy/language and social/emotion development.

More than 280 children were involved in programs that focused on increasing early literacy/language and social/ emotional development.

RESULT Over $6 million in tax refunds were returned to Lane County families through the free tax preparation sites in 2012.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

UNITED WAY ADVANCES THE COMMON GOOD

STRATEGY Increase the capacity of the community safety net clinics to provide care to the uninsured or under insured.

RESULT

Between 2009-2011, more than 15,000 uninsured or under insured residents were connected to basic health care.

More than 68,000 individuals were served over 200,000 meals through the emergency food box system.
