A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-INCHIEF Dear Reader, We hope that you had a spooky Halloween this year, despite the cold. If Beijing’s bitter, harsh winter is a bit too much for you and you’ve been seeking an escape, check out page 39 for some teashops in the city to keep yourself warm. Or if that’s not quite your thing, get a head start for next year’s Halloween by taking a look at some of the top special effects makeup Youtube channels on page 32. There’s no time quite as hectic as the end of the first semester. For the seniors out there, we hope that your college applications are going swimmingly. To everyone else, if you’re not quite at that stage yet, jump to page 16 for a review of UToronto, in case if you’re in that bunch of people now wanting to move to Canada after recent events. In these gloomy winter days, many of us are likely still internally mourning the results of the US elections, regardless of our nationality. If you are finding it difficult to keep yourself sane amidst all the frantic turmoil that has built up over the past month, take some time to read our open letter concerning the election on page 20. We hope that our insights help you make your own reflections regarding the issue and that you find solace in its remarks. As the days get colder, for many of us this will be the busiest time of year. With countless projects piling up on each other and seemingly endless exams coming up, UNIT-E wishes you the best of luck in the final stretch of the semester. Happy holidays! ABOUT UNIT-E

UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’S VISION AND PHILOSOPHY

UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing. Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
