A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-INCHIEF Dear Reader, As the school year comes to a close, we hope that you all have had a fruitful year by meeting new friends and taking up the opportunities that were offered to you. Speaking of opportunities, UNIT-E is currently on the lookout for staff members from any and all schools! If you are interested in participating as a formatter, writer, or editor, contact me via my e-mail at alanke@unit-emagazine.org stating your interest and we will gladly help set you on track. We’re eager to hear from you all! As a huge music fan, I always appreciate it when students other than myself contribute articles about music. This issue, we have not one, but two articles related to the subject. Since UNIT-E is a medium for students to convey their diverse thoughts and opinions, one writer’s view might not necessarily represent that of the entire publication. For example, while one writer might write an in-depth review of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (page 26), if I were to write it, it certainly wouldn’t be as positive. Similarly, in the past, we’ve published issues with side-by-side reviews that showcased two contrasting views on the same work, such as our review of All Time Low’s 2015 album, Future Hearts. The point is, UNIT-E is a platform that welcomes you to voice yourself, no matter how controversial your opinion is. Whether you’re just starting the two-year IB journey or just about finished with it, check out our satire of it on page 12. If you’re part of the latter, lean back and take a look at all that you’ve survived; you should be proud of yourself. If on the other hand, you’re on the other side of the spectrum, we wish you good luck. ABOUT UNIT-E

UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’S VISION AND PHILOSOPHY

UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing. Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
