LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Dear Reader, The end of the school year is always a bittersweet time. On one hand, all of us get a much-deserved break from school. On the other, it’s the season filled with the most goodbyes. In just a few months, some of your closest friends may move or graduate, with most of last year’s seniors entering college. So, make sure that you say your goodbyes to whoever may be leaving Beijing soon. On that note, I’d like to thank UNIT-E’s former Editor-In-Chief, Chelsea Liu for her mentorship. Thank you for all the help, for assisting me when I was just beginning to acquaint myself with this position. Almost three years ago, when I wrote my first article for UNIT-E as a freshman, I never imagined being where I am today. I thought to myself something along the lines of, “if UNIT-E would even publish this article, I’d be lucky to even become a column editor by my senior year.” So, thank you for believing in me, Chelsea. You can read her goodbye letter, along with the letters of former co-art director Nicole Bae and former Academics column editor Daniel Fu starting from page 6. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the magazine. For everyone else, wherever you’re bound to next, whether it be to college, a new school, or just another year of high school, I wish you cherish your break and rest while you can, you’ll need it whichever path you’re on. Regards, Alan Ke Editor-In-Chief

ABOUT UNIT-E

UNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’S VISION AND PHILOSOPHY

UNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing. Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
