Skimmers Found on Gas Pumps in the Fox Valley Recently, card skimmers have been found at some Fox Valley area gas stations. The skimmers are put on or in the gas pump card slot and can put your card information at risk. To help you protect your card information, we have put together a few ways you can safeguard from card skimmers at the gas pump. There are two types of skimmers – external and internal skimmers. An external skimmer is a device put on top of the card reader, keypad or both that looks identical to the real device. When your card is inserted, the skimmer saves the card information. To check for external skimmers at a gas pump: • Examine the card reader and keypad for anything that looks suspicious, like if the keypad doesn’t seem like it is fully attached or the card slot is misaligned.

•G ently tug on the card slot to make sure it’s secure. If there is an external skimmer applied it will most often move slightly as they are meant to be removed after a short period of time. • Check to see if the card slot looks different than that of other gas pumps. Internal card skimmers are placed inside of the card slot and save your card information as your card is read for the transaction. Internal skimmers are harder for consumers to notice and have become more popular as more people have learned how to identify external skimmers. To check for internal skimmers at a gas pump: •L ook for tamper-evident stickers. If the gas station has them, they will normally overlap a seam where two plastic pieces come together around the card slot. To

insert an internal skimmer this piece needs to be removed. Make sure the sticker is still intact and is one consistent color or pattern. • Make sure all graphics, colors and materials are consistent and aligned properly. Similar to the sticker, if any pieces are removed so a skimmer can be put in place, the pieces will need to be put back perfectly to be undetectable. Be aware of graphics that are not placed properly over seams or differences in materials. • Check for pinhole cameras. These cameras are very small and are usually not detected unless specifically looked for. Pinhole cameras often accompany internal skimmers and are pointed at the keypad to record you typing in your PIN number.

If you see anything on the gas pumps that look suspicious or if you would like to be extra cautious, pay inside for your transaction. We encourage you to always read your credit card and account statements to verify you completed every transaction.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, have questions about your account or notice any suspicious transactions contact us immediately at 920-766-6000 to speak with a Financial Services Representative. After hours, call the Lost/Stolen Card Center at 1-800-523-4175.

The Ghost Branch, a student-run branch located within the high school’s commons, has been a part of Kaukauna High School for more than 14 years. The branch is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week during school lunch hours. This year, Unison has partnered with Mr. VanderHeiden’s Accounting class to provide students the opportunity to gain valuable personal finance skills and career experience. Each trimester, students in the class will be “hired” into a credit union role which they have applied for. Options include Member Associates (tellers), Human Resources, Marketing, Financial Services Representatives (FSRs) and Management. Throughout the trimester, students learn about their department and work in their roles during class. Each student will also create a personal budget and spending plan based on their position’s salary. In addition to classroom activities, students in the Member Associates role staff the Ghost Branch, along with a Unison representative, over the lunch hour and learn about daily credit union operations and money management skills. This valuable opportunity offers students realworld experience and applicable knowledge that will benefit them as they transition through high school, college and beyond.
