Unison is the perfect fit for my small business!

Meet Dorothy “Dort” Vander Wyst from Festive Balloons in Little Chute. Dort has always been a supporter of credit unions, she’s belonged to one since she was a little girl saving money in a piggy bank. Dort was born and raised in Little Chute, and still lives there today, where she runs her online and inhome business. Dort’s husband, Frank, started using Kaukauna Credit Union (now Unison) when his employer began direct deposit. They opened a joint account at Unison about 10 years ago, when the Little Chute branch was built.

Dort’s interest in balloon creations came when she began following several balloon artists on YouTube and practicing balloon twisting at home with the long, skinny (entertainer) balloons. After attending a daylong balloon workshop, Dort decided to start a business of her own doing smaller, more detailed sculptures.

“I love to use It’s Me 247 Online Banking to keep track of my balances and to transfer money from my savings account to pay my Unison credit card. It is so easy!”, says Dort. “The employees at Unison have always been very personable. From being greeted in the lobby, going through the drive-up and now, with Ryan, my Financial Services Representative, I have had smiling, helpful and pleasant service. I would recommend Unison to anyone who needs advice or help with any type of account.” We’d like to say Dort, thank you for choosing Unison! Ryan took an interest in my balloon business and spread the word along to others at Unison, which has really helped me out!”

Deck the Halls Without Overspending

Even in tough times, it seems we love to shop…especially for the holidays. But why?

Some people may feel guilty about not spending as much time with their loved ones or friends and will compensate with a special gift. Others may feel they need to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ to match what friends, families, neighbors and even co-workers are doing. And some simply get swept away in the glitter of the season and overspend before they realize what they’re doing. For all of these reasons, setting a budget and making a list, and matching the two, can be really effective at reining in the ‘over’ part of holiday overspending.

Smart Spending

So how can you have your holiday shopping and stay on budget too? Here are a couple ideas.

• Crunch the numbers. Create a holiday budget listing all expenses, including small gifts and “extras,” such as cards, wrapping paper, decorations and holiday clothing purchases. • Avoid money matching. Most people feel the stress of the dollar-for-dollar matching competition, so talk with the people on your shopping list about setting limits. Fill in gaps with homemade presents or offer help to the recipient with chores or services.

• Start early. Avoid the last-minute rush so that you’ll have more time to comparison shop. If you’re in a rush to get out of a crowded mall or store, you’re more likely to spend impulsively as a way of escape.

• Get creative. Set up a gift exchange among friends and family. For children with big-ticket items, consider pooling resources with other family members rather than splurging yourself into debt. • Be a quitter. When you hit your budget limit, stop! Leave credit cards at home and put each person’s budget in an envelope, in cash. When it’s gone, it’s gone – and you’re done.

• Spend within your means. If you run up a big bill to celebrate the holidays and then pay it off at a leisurely pace, next year you may experience financial heartburn, the sour sensation that your holiday overindulgence is taking way too long to leave your budgetary system.

Oops! I Overspent…

Not to worry! Unison Credit Union is here to help. If you accidentally get a little carried away with the spirit of giving, stop in and talk to one of our Financial Services Representatives. Whether you need to consolidate your debt, take out a new loan or need a credit card, we are here for you. It’s never too early to start planning ahead for next year with our Christmas Savings account. At Unison, we start with you and we’ll stay with you! Merry Christmas to you and yours.
