Prada Acquires Versace
for $1.4 Billion, Marks New Era for Both Brands
In a historic move, Italian luxury giant Prada has acquired iconic fashion house Versace from US-based Capri Holdings in a $1.4 billion cash deal, restoring Versace to Italian ownership and strengthening Prada’s position in the global luxury market. Prada Group chairman Patrizio Bertelli hailed the acquisition as a union of shared values like creativity and craftsmanship. Capri Holdings, which bought Versace for $2.1 billion in 2018, faced challenges amid shifting trends toward “quiet luxury” and declining sales, leading to the discounted deal. The acquisition, the largest in Prada’s 112-year history, is expected to close in late 2025. Ahead of the transition, Donatella Versace stepped down as creative director after more than 30 years, with Dario Vitale, known for his success at Miu Miu, taking her place. Donatella now serves as Versace’s chief ambassador as the brand enters a new era.
Ericsson to Localise Telecom Antenna Production in India by June 2025
“Even if you don’t have the perfect idea to begin with, you can likely adapt.”
Victoria Ransom
Sweden-based telecom giant Ericsson will localise the production of all its telecom antennas for the Indian market by June 2025, responding to rising demand from major operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Production will be handled in Gurgaon through local partner VVDN Technologies. While meeting India's growing 5G needs, Ericsson also plans to export antennas made in India. This move comes as domestic demand helps offset a slowdown from the US, Ericsson’s biggest market. The company's logistics hub in Pune will continue supporting regional distribution. With existing manufacturing units in Mexico, Romania, and China, Ericsson’s decision to strengthen its India operations highlights the country's expanding role in the global 5G ecosystem. Having started manufacturing in India in 1994, this latest move marks a deeper commitment to one of the world’s fastest-growing telecom markets.
Eversource Capital in Advanced Talks to Acquire Troubled EV Startup BluSmart
Eversource Capital is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire EV ride-hailing startup BluSmart, which recently suspended operations amid a financial scandal involving its sister firm, Gensol Engineering. The proposed buyout, valued between `800–1,000 crore, represents a steep 60% discount from BluSmart’s last known $300 million valuation. Post-acquisition, BluSmart would merge with Eversource’s EV venture Lithium Urban Technologies, with an additional $100 million investment planned for the combined entity. A key condition of the deal requires BluSmart co-founders Anmol Singh Jaggi and Puneet Singh Jaggi, currently barred by Sebi over alleged fund misuse, to resign from the board. The controversy has severely impacted Gensol, whose shares have plunged 84% since January, wiping out over 70% of its market value in just two weeks, and has triggered layoffs and customer refund issues at BluSmart.
Puma Launches ‘5AM High Drops’ Campaign to Celebrate Early-Morning Runners
“We are really competing against ourselves, we have no control over how other people perform.”

State Bank of India (SBI) has decided to halt its plan to raise up to `150 billion through bond sales in the current fiscal year due to persistently high bond yields, despite recent policy rate cuts and liquidity measures by the central bank. Originally set to issue `50 billion in Basel III-compliant additional Tier-I perpetual bonds and `100 billion in 15-year infrastructure bonds, SBI now plans to reassess its funding needs in the new financial year starting April. Rising yields on AAA-rated 10-year corporate bonds—up by 15 basis points since early February 2025—have made market conditions unfavourable. Meanwhile, state-run banks like Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of Maharashtra raised `72.52 billion via infrastructure bonds in February, falling short of their targets. SBI last tapped the market in October 2024, raising `50 billion at a 7.98% yield via perpetual bonds.

British Employers Hold Pay Growth Steady as BoE Watches Closely
British employers maintained pay growth at 3% during the three months to March, marking the fourth consecutive quarter at this level and the joint-lowest since December 2021, according to HR analytics firm Brightmine. Despite major policy changes in April, including a national insurance hike and a near 7% rise in the minimum wage, employers have shown no immediate reaction, with many adopting a "watch and wait" approach, said Brightmine’s Sheila Attwood. The Bank of England (BoE), closely monitoring wage trends as it considers future interest rate cuts, will likely have a clearer outlook by the second half of 2025. Brightmine's analysis of 125 pay settlements covering around 192,000 workers showed a shift toward more modest deals, especially at the lower pay scale. The BoE's next interest rate decision is scheduled for May 8.
Russia Escalates Hybrid Attacks on the Netherlands, Warns Dutch Military Intelligence
Russia is intensifying its hybrid warfare against the Netherlands and its European allies, according to the latest report from the Dutch military intelligence agency (MIVD). Director Peter Reesink revealed that Russian hackers recently attempted cyber sabotage on a Dutch public service, marking a significant escalation in cyber activities. Although the attack was foiled, the MIVD warned of ongoing Russian efforts to target critical infrastructure, including the mapping of key sites in the North Sea for potential disruption. Additionally, the report highlighted China's increasing espionage activities, particularly in the Dutch semiconductor sector, and its growing alignment with Russia. Reesink urged European nations to accelerate military readiness, citing the rising risks posed by Russia’s rapid military buildup and its broader threats to European security. Western nations, including Britain, have echoed concerns about Russia's aggressive actions, though Moscow denies involvement.
UK Supreme Court Rules "Woman" Refers to Biological Sex in Landmark Case
Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that under the Equality Act 2010, the term "woman" refers to biological sex, not gender identity. The decision followed a legal challenge by For Women Scotland (FWS) against Scottish government guidance allowing trans women with gender recognition certificates to be included in female public sector board quotas. The court’s unanimous ruling affirms that single-sex services, including women’s refuges, hospital wards, and sports, can legally exclude trans women. While the UK government and FWS hailed the decision as a protection for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ advocates, including Stonewall, expressed concerns about its potential harm to trans people’s access to services. The ruling reignites the debate over transgender rights and women’s spaces in Britain, with mixed reactions from high-profile figures and calls for legislative reform to address trans protections.
Niox Group Terminates Sale Process Following Keensight Capital Withdrawal
British medical device company Niox Group has ended its sale process after Keensight Capital withdrew its interest in acquiring the company. Keensight, a Paris-based private equity firm, had proposed a £22.4 million ($29.1 million) deal, offering 81 pence per share, up from its initial bid of 78 pence. However, the agreement has been cancelled due to worsening macroeconomic conditions, particularly growing global trade tensions and fears of a recession. The ongoing trade war, exacerbated by US tariffs, has contributed to economic uncertainty, and the Bank of England has cautioned about the UK's vulnerability. While Niox had previously engaged in talks with other potential buyers, it had favoured Keensight's offer. The company has not provided updates on any alternative bids, leaving its future direction uncertain amid the broader economic challenges.
SIR SOHAN ROY SK: THE EFFICIENT KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR
In a world where industry titans are a dime a dozen, there is one visionary who dared to chart an entirely different course and explore new frontiers. He began his journey just like any other dreamer on the shores of Kerala armed with nothing but an unshakeable vision and an engineer's precision. This is the success saga of Sir Sohan Roy SK, the Efficient Knight who defied the conventional playbook of success, shattered cultural barriers, and rewrote the rules of global leadership. His journey not just inspires but challenges everything you thought you knew about innovation, perseverance, and the power of thinking differently. Marked by consistent recognition in the Forbes' list of Top Indian Leaders in the Arab World from 2015 to 2019, Roy is an acclaimed entrepreneur, world record-holding poet, Hollywood director, Educator, Mentor, member of IEMMY, founder and promoter of the International Maritime Club, World Medical Council and the prestigious Indywood Billionaires Club (IBC). He has not only shaped his own destiny but has also become a catalyst for transformation across multiple industries. For his humanitarian and environmental initiatives in business and movies, he was bestowed with ‘Knighthood’ by the ancient Italian chivalric order, Ordis Parte Guelfa, becoming the first Indian to receive this honour.
The Beginning of an Amazing Voyage
Starting his professional journey as a marine engineer, Roy established Aries Marine in 1998. His innovative approach to business coupled with his commitment to
excellence fueled the remarkable growth of the enterprise over the years. Headquartered in Sharjah, UAE, the firm now encompasses 76 companies across 30 countries, providing employment to over 3,000 individuals. Aries Marine & Eng Services LLC (AMES), the flagship brand of Aries Group, is the largest ship design and consultancy firm globally, catering to the maritime and design industry. It is supported by its Inspection & Maintenance (I&M) division, which operates the world's largest NDT services with worldclass testing facilities developed over decades of expertise, positioning Aries as a leader in the Middle East. Aries is ranked No. 1 globally in five fields and No. 1 in the Middle East in 31 segments. The company leverages cutting-edge technology that aids the committed team of engineers and technicians, to cater to a wide range of needs in the maritime industry through its various specialised divisions.
Sailing Ahead
Roy’s innovative spirit in maritime engineering has repeatedly made waves across the industry. His masterpiece, the Aries Punnamada Chundan, captured the world's imagination as it sailed into the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest snake boat ever created. But this was just the beginning of his revolutionary designs. The 'BOTEL,' an ingenious semi-solar powered unsinkable seagoing steel houseboat, demonstrated his early commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. His creative mind didn't stop there – the innovative 'Topless Ship' design and the groundbreaking 'Solar AC Bed' further showcased his abil-
ity to merge eco-consciousness with practical innovation. But his most profound impact on the maritime industry came through an ambitious global initiative: the transformation of over 4000+ vessels into 'Green Ships.' This monumental achievement not only set a world record but also sparked a revolution in sustainable shipping practices. At the core of Aries Group lies his transformative 'Green Vision' – an extraordinary step of dedicating a quarter of its total workforce hours specifically to 'green' initiatives.
His company is at the vanguard of maritime innovation, pioneering advances in energy efficiency, exploring cutting-edge alternate propulsion systems, and leading the charge in developing low and zerocarbon fuel technologies. What sets this vision apart is his commitment to progress over profit – the group regularly undertakes pilot projects and concept studies on a zero-profit basis, prioritising environmental impact over financial gain.
Tryst with Celluloid
Roy began to be noticed in the entertainment world after he directed "DAM999" which made history as India's first mainstream Oscarqualified movie. But his vision for cinema extends far beyond personal achievement. Over the past decade, he has emerged as a pivotal figure in bridging Indian cinema with global recognition, guiding 47+ Indian feature films and documentaries to the prestigious Academy Awards (Oscars). His ambitious US$10 billion, Project Indywood proved to be a turning point for the entire Indian Film Industry. Under Roy's leadership, a series of groundbreaking fa-

cilities emerged: Aries Plex, India's first dual 4K projection theatre, and Aries Vismayas Max, Kerala's pioneering ATMOS sound mixing studio, and the country's first integrated dubbing system. He also launched the first International Film Magazine dedicated to coverage of the Oscars, Cannes, and American Film Market, creating new pathways for Indian cinema's global presence. The crown jewel of his initiatives, the Indywood Film Carnival, emerged as an unprecedented convergence of cinema, media, music, advertising, fashion, and education, drawing billionaire investors from diverse industries, all united by the vision of transforming Indian cinema.
As the founder of the Indywood Billionaires Club, Roy’s ambitions reach beyond entertainment to economic transformation, working toward the audacious goal of achieving parity between the Indian Rupee and the US Dollar. Through two decades of organising talent hunts, he has discovered and launched hundreds of promising careers in the film industry. He initiated establishment of Film Clubs across educational institutions and corporate organisations, fostering skill development and career design in unprecedented ways. He also pioneered an innovative approach to corporate social responsibility by leveraging the power of cinema for social change. Under his leadership, Aries Group broke new ground with ‘Jalam’, their first charity movie from south India, whose profits directly supported landless communities in Kerala's Idukki region and funded women empowerment programmes. This successful model inspired further ventures, including 'Aickarakkonathe Bhish-
aguranmaar', 'Mmmm - Sound of Pain', 'Aadhivaasi’, and ‘Karnika’. Each film emphasises his vision of using cinema not just as entertainment, but as a catalyst for meaningful social transformation.
Transforming Maritime Studies
Education holds a special place in Roy's vision for the future. In 2012, he founded the Aries International Maritime Research Institute (AIMRI) to revolutionise maritime education through visual media and technology. The institute delivers advanced technical, management, and personal development courses for the maritime sector, and is pioneering AI-driven education through its i-Metaverse University initiative. He also initiated the Industrial Doctorate concept under AIMRI to bridge academia and industry and honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions or achieved remarkable lifetime accomplishments in their fields of expertise. He further revolutionised maritime education by creating Marine BizTV & Medi BizTV, the world's first maritime TV channels, offering an impressive 20,000 hours of technical content. Roy's innovative spirit has yielded 270 groundbreaking concepts and products, each designed with sustainability at its core.
Nurturing Young Talents
His vision has now expanded with the creation of the Indywood Talent Club, a platform that combines visual learning with personalised career guidance. Through its flagship Aries Kids Career Design Programme, he mentors students to map out their future careers based on their interests and abilities. The programme equips young students
with the practical knowledge, skills, and insights essential for a successful transition into the professional realm. He recently took over India’s largest stage drama, Aries Kalanilayam, for a project dedicated to nurturing and showcasing young and talented individuals in the vibrant world of theatre production.
To enhance the learning experience, he also introduced the Educational 3D Theatre, creating an immersive environment where students can engage with educational content firsthand. Equipped with advanced features to facilitate seminars, video presentations, conferences, online classes, 3D ieducation, animatic content, and more, this technological marvel helps schools, professional colleges, and universities keep pace with the growing needs of the education sector. At Agali Vocational Higher Secondary School in Kerala’s Attapadi, students now benefit from a stateof-the-art Educational Theatre and Film Club. The theatre features premium audiovisual technology, transforming everyday lectures and seminars into immersive learning experiences. Complementing this facility, the newly established film club introduces students to the art and craft of cinema, deepening their understanding of filmmaking.
The Quest to Optimise Efficiency
At the heart of Roy’s success lies his pioneering Efficiency Improvement System Management (EFFISM), a revolutionary efficiency improvement concept, which incorporates 100 critical efficiency parameters to optimise an individual’s both personal and professional performance. Coupled with
the Hartoise programme, EFFISM has now become a blueprint for organisational excellence. Based on the basic principle of balanced body, mind, and Karma (1:1:1), it is the first validated Industrial Research Product developed by Aries International Maritime Research Institute (AIMRI). EFFISM allows individuals to maintain a perfect work-life balance and achieve their goals effortlessly. It not only understands an individual's efficiency, but also changes their fundamental character and improves it daily. It identifies efficiency drain holes through its 200 set parameters and helps increase the profits of an organisation by up to 30 – 300% through efficiency improvement. Through various initiatives within the Aries Group, he has implemented continuous industrial education programs that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry requirements.
In Love with the Gentleman’s Game
Beyond the boardroom, Roy is a passionate cricket lover which led to significant investments in the sports sector. When he established the Aries Group of Companies, he brought his childhood passion into the corporate world. Every year, the company organises internal cricket matches, a tradition that not only keeps employees fit and healthy but also fosters team spirit and leadership skills. Taking one step further, Aries under his leadership started to conduct the Aries Premier Cricket League where corporates in the Middle East come together and share their love for the sport. As his cricket journey continued to expand internationally, he became a co-owner of the Harare Hurricanes in Zimbabwe's Zim Afro T10 cricket league, partnering with Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. This venture further demonstrated his
commitment to promoting cricket and creating opportunities for talent development across different countries. His dream of owning a cricket team in Kerala became a reality when the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) was announced. He seized the opportunity to acquire Aries Kollam Sailors, which went on to win the first match of the season- a moment of triumph that validated his long-standing love for the Gentleman’s Game.
Besides his entrepreneurial achievements, his literary achievements are equally impressive. He holds the Time Record and World Book of Records UK recognition for writing and publishing socially relevant short poems. In the last seven years, he has written over 2,700 poems without taking a single day break. His work in Anukavyam represents a unique blend of social consciousness and artistic expression,
Recognised with prestigious accolades such as the Visionary leadership in Maritime Innovation and Cinema at the Global Indian Business Achievement Awards, Pride of Bharat Award 2024 by the I CAN Foundation India, Maritime Personality of the Year Award 2023 and the Global Peace Award at the Global Summit 2022, Roy’s dynamic leadership and visionary ideas have left a profound mark on various industries.

Taking HR Management to New Heights
What sets the Aries Group apart is its revolutionary human resource practices. Numerous model schemes have been initiated as part of its policy programmes, including providing pensions to employees 'homemakers' partners and parents, providing employees with a 50% share, royalties, providing finan-
cial security to their parents in the event of an employee's unexpected demise, providing educational allowances, scholarships for their children's education and more. Roy's employeecentric philosophy manifests in unique initiatives such as grandparent care support, interest-free home support, extended maternity and motherhood leave, menstrual leave, startup partnerships, anti-caste and anti-dowry commitment, and allowance
for inter-caste marriage to name a few. These measures are a testament to the organisation’s commitment to creating a workplace where employees and their families can thrive and prosper.
These groundbreaking practices have not only fostered loyalty but have also created a model for sustainable business growth. He also established Happiness Department in his organisation to oversee their new fitness centre, employee engagement programmes, wellness initiatives, and even fitness challenges. The department also conducts regular health check-up drives, and team-building activities to promote a balanced, happy workplace.
Back to the Roots
As his global success grew, Sohan Roy's thoughts frequently returned to Aickarakkonam, the village that shaped his early years. Despite building an international maritime empire, he maintained a deep connection to his roots. Recognising the untapped potential in Aickarakkonam, he envisioned creating meaningful opportunities for its residents. His goal extended beyond job creation. Instead, he aimed at empowering individuals, especially women, toward financial independence and personal growth. By establishing an Aries Group office in Aickarakkonam, he bridged his professional achievements with his commitment to community development.
A cornerstone of Roy's vision for
Aickarakkonam was implementing skill development programs for women. Understanding the barriers many women faced in accessing education and employment, he introduced training initiatives that equipped them with practical skills. These efforts fostered independence and confidence, breaking traditional constraints that had historically limited their opportunities. Through workshops, classes, and support systems, villagers have now gained tools to build sustainable futures. To brand Aickarakkonam and Ayurveda globally, he produced ‘Aickarakonnathe Bhishaguranmaar’ which contended for the Oscars in 2023, and created a global awareness about Ayurvedic practitioners worldwide.
Despite leading a global organisation, Roy maintains a personal involvement in Aickarakkonam's development. For him, developing his native place represents more than corporate social responsibility – it's a deeply personal mission to honour his origins and the values that shaped him. Through his efforts to transform Aickarakkonam into a model village, he ensures that the community spirit that influenced his character continues to thrive and
inspire future generations.
Family Matters
Family plays a crucial role in Roy's story. His wife, Abhini, a talented classical dancer and interior designer, has been his pillar of support throughout his journey. Their daughters, Nirmalya and Nivedya Sohan Roy, have followed in their father's footsteps as Professional Naval Architects, ensuring the continuation of his legacy while bringing fresh perspectives to the business. Abhini is the Managing Director of Aries International Interiors –Dubai, Aries Telecasting Pvt Ltd; Producer at BizTv Network, Executive Director of Indywood Fashion Premier League (IFPL) and promoter of Khadi handlooms through her brand ‘Abhini Contours.’ Nirmalya is the Vice President of Aries Group, looking after the group activities. She made waves by becoming the first-ever female president of Ship Science at the University of Southampton. As a maritime industry leader, she is actively focused on driving change in the industry. Her husband, Gilberto is a naval architect working in a leading maritime firm in the UK. Dr. Nivedya is the Managing Director of Aries Dental & Aesthetics Clinic, Dubai and Co-

As he continues to break new ground in various fields, his legacy grows stronger. Entrusting sensitive data to devices without maintaining mental backups poses not just memoryrelated problems but also critical cybersecurity risks. Moreover, the shift away from face-to-face communication fosters social isolation, potentially altering brain structure and impairing emotional intelligence.
DIGITAL DEMENTIA IN THE WORKPLACE
It wasn't too long ago that our brains stored more than just thoughts. They held family birthdays, travel directions and even an entire phone book. Our brains—once wired for retention and focus—are now outsourced to the devices in our palms.
In today's digital world, when information is just one swipe away, we have undeniably gained huge convenience in conducting everyday tasks. While this digital ease has transformed the way we learn, work and communicate, it is also leading to a creeping phenomenon known as Digital Dementia.
Coined by German neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer in his book "Digital Dementia – How we are depriving ourselves and our children of reason", the term refers to a noticeable decline in mental faculties— particularly memory, attention, and
deep thinking—resulting from the overuse of digital devices and online tools. The brain, like any muscle, deteriorates when not used actively. As we increasingly outsource thinking, remembering, and even socialising to screens, we are, often unknowingly, deconditioning our cognitive systems.
Some researchers have shown a worrying increase in symptoms associated with digital dementia in countries with high internet and smartphone penetration rates. In fact, the World Health Organization issued guidelines in 2019 limiting digital device usage for children, citing concerns about long-term cognitive effects. But the threat isn't limited to younger generations. In today's high-speed professional environments, where innovation, mental agility, and sharp decision-making are non-negotiable, digital dementia
presents a silent yet pervasive risk to professionals also.
Memory Offloading
Digital tools promise instant access to information, yet they also enable "memory offloading"—a psychological dependence that reduces our brain's ability to retain even basic facts. Over time, our recall skills erode, and with them, our intellectual independence.
Diminished Critical Thinking
By relying on digital devices and AI for answers, professionals risk bypassing the mental processes that underpin strategic reasoning and analysis. Quick Googling often replaces reflective thinking, and depth is sacrificed for speed.
Security Risks and Social Disconnection
Entrusting sensitive data to devices without maintaining mental
backups poses not just memoryrelated problems but also critical cybersecurity risks. Moreover, the shift away from face-to-face communication fosters social isolation, potentially altering brain structure and impairing emotional intelligence.
A Call for Cognitive Balance
To combat this, organisations must embed behavioural strategies that support cognitive health: encourage manual note-taking, foster collaborative brainstorming, and support cross-functional problemsolving. Technology is a powerful tool—but without a balance of realworld mental engagement, it can come at the cost of our most vital asset: the brain.
Finance Professionals: At Higher Risk
Among the most vulnerable to
digital dementia are bankers and finance professionals, whose roles demand high-speed decision-making, multitasking, and extended hours on screens. Their dependence on financial software, analytics dashboards, and real-time alerts means their cognitive workload is constantly externalised.
This can result in a long-term decline in memory retention, critical judgment, and sustained focus— three pillars crucial in high-stakes financial environments. To protect against this:
Practise mental recall of client details, interest rate trends, or market positions before checking systems.
Schedule daily digital breaks to rest the brain from screens and allow it to recalibrate.
Engage in offline strategic think-
ing, such as paper-based modelling or whiteboard planning.
Encourage face-to-face client engagement, which not only builds rapport but stimulates the brain's social cognition circuits.
Avoid over-reliance on automation—reconnect with manual calculations and active scenario analysis during key decision-making. Conclusion
Digital dementia is not a dystopian theory—it is a current and rising workplace hazard. While the benefits of technology are undeniable, professionals across industries must learn to balance screen time with practices that protect and enhance their cognitive capabilities. A work culture that values presence, memory, and mindfulness may well be the best investment any organisation can make in the digital age

Finding one's core purpose at work elevates not only individual well-being but also enhances the calibre of one's contributions to their organization and society. By embarking on this journey, individuals can transform their professional lives into grand narratives filled with meaning and impact.
FIND YOUR CORE PURPOSE IN LIFE AND AT WORK
Finding one's core purpose is crucial for personal fulfilment and professional success. This introspective journey is not just about financial gain or job titles but about aligning one's work with deeper values and aspirations. As we reckon with the evolving dynamics of work environments, understanding our purpose can provide clarity and direction.
At the heart of this exploration lies the need to calibrate our life choices with our inherent passions and strengths. By calibrating our professional paths, we attune our daily activities to our larger goals, thereby enhancing our work's grand meaning. This alignment often brings about a sense of satisfaction and motivation that is less about external praise and more about internal fulfilment.
It's easy to become facetious about the quest for purpose, dismissing it as idealistic or impractical, especially in a world preoccupied with productivity and efficiency. However, to enunciate one’s true calling and integrate it with their work can lead
to unprecedented levels of engagement and creativity.
The solstice in this context represents those pivotal moments of clarity and transformation when one truly understands their contribution to the world. Such moments of enlightenment are crucial and can lead to a more focused and fulfilling career path.
Ultimately, finding one's core purpose at work elevates not only individual well-being but also enhances the calibre of one's contributions to their organization and society. By embarking on this journey, individuals can transform their professional lives into grand narratives filled with meaning and impact.
Here are six practical steps to guide you through this introspective journey:
1. Self-Reflection: Start by dedicating time to ponder your passions, strengths, and values. Self-reflection is crucial in understanding what truly motivates you. Consider journaling your thoughts or engaging in mindfulness practices to gain deeper insights into what resonates
with your core.
2. Identify Core Values: Determine the values that guide your decisions and actions. These could include values like integrity, creativity, helping others, or personal growth. Understanding your core values helps in identifying work that aligns with them, ensuring that your professional life is not in conflict with your personal beliefs.
3. Set Clear Objectives: Once you have an understanding of your values and passions, set clear objectives that reflect your core purpose. These objectives should guide your career choices and daily activities. Make sure they are realistic, measurable, and aligned with your longterm vision.
4. Research and Exploration: Conduct research to explore fields, roles, or organisations that align with your purpose. Networking, informational interviews, and engaging in various professional communities can provide insights and open doors to opportunities that resonate with your core purpose.
5. Align Activities: Reflect on your current work and daily activities. Identify areas that are misaligned with your core purpose and consider how you can adjust them. This might involve delegating tasks that do not align with your objectives, or restructuring your time to focus more on activities that fulfil your core purpose.
6. Evaluate and Adjust: Regularly evaluate your progress and make necessary adjustments. Life is dynamic, and so is your purpose. As you grow, your understanding of your core purpose may evolve. Be open to refining your goals and strategies, ensuring that your work remains in alignment with what is truly important to you.
By following these six steps, you can discover and harness your core purpose, transforming both your work and personal life. This alignment not only enhances personal
fulfilment but can lead to greater professional success, as your work becomes a true reflection of your authentic self.
Helping others find their core purpose in life is a rewarding endeavour that can significantly impact individuals and communities. This guiding process involves empathy, insight, and structured support to assist others in discovering their passions and aligning their actions with their deepest values.
Understanding and Empathy:
The first step in this supportive journey is to listen actively and empathetically. Engaging in open conversations allows individuals to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment. By providing a safe and supportive environment, you enable them to explore their experiences, aspirations, and challenges. This foundation of trust is crucial in helping them uncover what truly matters to them.
Encouraging SelfReflection:
Encouraging self-reflection is vital in the pursuit of purpose. Prompt individuals to consider what activities bring them joy and fulfilment, and what they naturally excel at. Encourage them to reflect on past experiences where they felt most alive or accomplished. Through this introspection, individuals can start to identify patterns and themes that reveal their core interests and values.
Identifying Strengths and Talents:
Everyone possesses unique strengths and talents that can guide them toward their purpose. Helping others recognise and appreciate their abilities empowers them to leverage these strengths in meaningful ways. This process may involve providing feedback, sharing observations, or suggesting opportunities to develop these talents further.
Clarifying Core Values:
Core values are the guiding principles that shape decisions and behaviours. Assisting others in clarify-
ing their core values helps them align their lives with what they believe is right and important. You can facilitate this by helping them rank their values or envision scenarios where their values have driven their actions. When individuals identify their core values, they can better navigate choices that align with their purpose.
Setting Goals and Creating Action Plans:
Once individuals have a clearer understanding of their purpose, the next step is to set goals and create action plans.
Offer guidance on how to set realistic, achievable objectives that align with their newfound purpose. Encourage them to break these goals into smaller, actionable steps that can be integrated into their daily lives.
Support and Encouragement:
Finally, provide ongoing support and encouragement. The journey to finding and living one's purpose is continuous and may include challenges and setbacks. Be there to celebrate successes, offer guidance during difficulties, and remind them of
the importance of staying true to their purpose.
By helping others find their core purpose in life, you empower them to live authentically and make meaningful contributions to the world. This process not only enriches their lives but can also create a ripple effect, inspiring others to embark on their journey of self-discovery and purpose. Through empathy, support, and guidance, we can collectively foster a world where individuals thrive by living in alignment with their true selves

The most direct route to increasing the value of the Indian passport is by fostering stronger bilateral relationships with other countries. This involves proactive diplomatic engagement aimed at securing visa waiver agreements or more favourable visa-on-arrival policies for Indian passport holders.
INDIAN PASSPORT: THE WAY AHEAD FOR ENHANCING ITS VALUE
The Indian passport serves as a crucial document for international travel, embodying the identity and nationality of its holder. However, its global value, measured by the ease of visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to other nations, currently stands at a rank of 73 out of 92 according to the Global Passport Power Rank, and 85th according to the Henley Passport Index of 2025. While this represents a gradual improvement from previous years, there is significant potential to enhance its standing, thereby offering greater global mobility and convenience to Indian citizens. This article outlines a multi-pronged approach to elevate the value and utility of the Indian passport.
I. Strengthening Diplomatic Ties and Reciprocal Agreements:
The most direct route to increasing the value of the Indian passport is by fostering stronger bilateral relationships with other countries. This involves proactive diplomatic engagement aimed at securing visa waiver agreements or more favourable visa-on-arrival policies for Indian passport holders.
• Targeted Negotiations: The Ministry of External Affairs should prioritise negotiations with countries that offer significant economic, educational, or tourism opportunities for Indians. A focused approach, based on mutual benefit and reciprocity, can yield positive outcomes. For instance, if India simplifies visa processes for tourists from a particular nation, it can leverage this to negotiate easier access for Indian travellers to that country.
• Reciprocity as a Core Principle: While extending visa facili-
ties to foreign nationals is a gesture of goodwill and can boost tourism, ensuring reciprocity is vital for enhancing the passport's value. India should actively pursue agreements where visa-free or visa-on-arrival access is granted to Indian citizens in return for similar facilitations.
• Leveraging India's Growing Global Influence: As India's economic and geopolitical influence expands, this can be strategically leveraged in diplomatic negotiations. Highlighting India's economic growth, its role in global forums, and its commitment to international cooperation can strengthen its position in visa negotiations.
II. Promoting Economic Growth and Stability:
A strong and stable economy significantly influences a nation's global standing and, consequently, the perceived value of its passport.
Countries with robust economies are often seen as low-risk for immigration and are more likely to grant visa-free access.
• Sustained Economic Reforms: Continued economic reforms that foster growth, attract foreign investment, and create employment opportunities will enhance India's global image. A thriving economy reassures other nations of the low risk of illegal immigration and strengthens the case for relaxed visa policies.
• Focus on Key Sectors: Promoting specific sectors like tourism, technology, and trade can indirectly enhance passport value. Streamlining visa processes for international tourists and business travellers visiting India can pave the way for reciprocal benefits for Indian citizens travelling abroad.
• International Trade Agree-
ments: Actively engaging in and negotiating favourable international trade agreements can deepen economic ties with other nations. Such agreements often include provisions for easier movement of business professionals, which can eventually translate to broader visa liberalisation.
III. Enhancing Passport Security and Integrity:
The security features and integrity of a passport are critical factors influencing its international acceptance. A passport that is difficult to forge and has robust security measures builds trust and confidence among immigration authorities worldwide.
• Advanced Biometric Technology: India was among the early adopters of biometric passports. Continuous upgrades and integration of the latest security features,
such as advanced microchips and digital identity verification, will reinforce the integrity of the Indian passport.
• Stringent Issuance Processes: Maintaining rigorous standards for passport issuance, including thorough background checks and robust identity verification processes, is essential to prevent misuse and forgery.
• International Cooperation on Security Standards: Collaborating with international bodies and sharing best practices on passport security can enhance global recognition and acceptance of the Indian passport.
IV. Improving International Relations and Soft Power:
A nation's soft power, derived from its culture, values, and positive global contributions, can significantly influence its diplomatic
relations and the perceived value of its passport.
• Promoting Cultural Exchange and Tourism: Actively promoting India's rich cultural heritage and diverse tourism offerings can foster goodwill and understanding with other nations. Increased people-to-people contact often leads to stronger diplomatic ties and more relaxed visa regimes.
• Engaging in Global Initiatives: Participating actively in global initiatives addressing issues like climate change, health, and sustainable development enhances India's international standing. A responsible and engaged global citizen is more likely to be viewed favourably in diplomatic negotiations.
• Leveraging the Indian Diaspora: The significant Indian diaspora across the world can act as a bridge between India and their host countries. Engaging with the diaspo-
ra and leveraging their influence can support diplomatic efforts to improve visa policies.
V. Streamlining Visa Processes for Inbound Travellers:
Simplifying and streamlining visa processes for foreign nationals visiting India can also indirectly contribute to enhancing the value of the Indian passport.
• Expanding E-Visa Facilities: India has made significant progress in offering e-visa facilities to citizens of many countries. Expanding this to more nations and simplifying the application process can create goodwill and encourage reciprocal arrangements.
• Efficient Immigration Systems: Investing in modernising airport and immigration infrastructure and processes can ensure smooth and efficient travel for international visitors. This reflects positively on
India and can strengthen diplomatic relations.
Conclusion:
Enhancing the value of the Indian passport requires a sustained and multi-faceted approach encompassing strategic diplomacy, economic strength, robust security measures, and the cultivation of soft power. By actively pursuing reciprocal visa agreements, maintaining economic stability, ensuring passport integrity, and strengthening international relations, India can significantly improve the global mobility and convenience for its citizens. This will not only benefit individual travellers but also elevate India's standing on the global stage, fostering stronger international partnerships and opportunities. The path forward demands consistent effort, strategic focus, and a commitment to building mutually beneficial relationships with nations across the world

Research indicates that spirituality can greatly support recovery from various health conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, musculoskeletal issues, and mental health challenges. Numerous scientific studies provide objective evidence of its benefits, including decreased stress levels, pain relief, improved surgical recovery, and lower rates of depression and anxiety, as well as support in preventing and recovering from substance abuse.
DOES SPIRITUALITY HAVE ANY ROLE IN HEALING?
Life often resembles a tumultuous journey. Amidst the constant hustle and the relentless lists of tasks, we frequently overlook the importance of maintaining our mental well-being. It seems we are perpetually in a state of activity, causing tranquility to elude us and rendering our challenges more daunting. However, there is a serene refuge available to us in this fast-paced existence – it is known as spirituality. In recent years, there has been a growing focus among healthcare providers, both religious and secular, on the significance of spirituality in the healing process. Over the last hundred years, technological progress has shifted the emphasis in medicine from a compassionate, servicedriven approach to one that is predominantly focused on technology and cures. While these advancements have resulted in remarkable improvements in medical practice and have enabled us to extend life, recent decades have seen physicians
striving to restore a more holistic approach to care. They are increasingly acknowledging that, historically, spirituality has been intertwined with health care. This spiritual or compassionate care aims to address the complete individual—encompassing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions.
Influence of spirituality on clinical outcomes:
Research indicates that spirituality can greatly support recovery from various health conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, musculoskeletal issues, and mental health challenges. Numerous scientific studies provide objective evidence of its benefits, including decreased stress levels, pain relief, improved surgical recovery, and lower rates of depression and anxiety, as well as support in preventing and recovering from substance abuse. The depth of one's faith play a significant role in these positive outcomes.
Participating in spiritual activi-
ties such as meditation or mindful walking can significantly alter our brain's functioning. These practices facilitate the release of chemicals like Dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, which are the body's inherent mechanisms for promoting feelings of well-being and relaxation.
The influence of spirituality on health is currently a prominent area of research. This topic is being explored not only by medical doctors but also by psychologists and various other professionals.
The research typically focuses on three primary domains: mortality, Adaptive strategies, and recovery processes.
Mortality - Certain observational studies indicate that individuals who engage in regular spiritual practices may have a longer lifespan. Additionally, one study suggests a potential biological mechanism involving interleukin (IL)-6, as higher levels of IL-6 are linked to a greater likelihood of disease. A study involving 1,700 older adults found that
those who participated in spiritual activities were 50% less likely to exhibit elevated IL-6 levels. The researchers proposed that a commitment to spiritual practices might enhance stress management by providing improved coping strategies, stronger social support networks, and a more robust framework of personal values and perspectives.
Adaptive strategy - Individuals with spiritual beliefs often draw upon their faith to manage illness, pain, and the stresses of life. Research suggests that spirituality is associated with a more optimistic perspective and an enhanced quality of life. For instance, patients suffering from advanced cancer who derived solace from their spiritual and religious convictions reported greater life satisfaction, increased happiness, and reduced pain levels. Additionally, some research has explored the impact of spirituality on pain management. One study indicated that spiritual well-being was associated with the capacity to find joy in life despite experiencing symptoms, including pain. This
implies that spirituality could be a significant focus in clinical settings. Spiritual beliefs can significantly aid patients in coping with illness and confronting mortality. In a study involving women with gynecologic cancer, 93% of 108 participants identified spiritual beliefs as a key factor in their coping strategies.
Recovery - Spiritual dedication often contributes positively to the healing process following illness and surgical procedures. It is possible that spirituality helps individuals reduce their worries, embrace the present, and release past concerns. Engaging in meditation for 10 to 20 minutes twice daily can result in a lower metabolism, reduced heart rate, decreased respiratory rate, and slower brain wave activity. Additionally, this practice has proven effective in managing chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, hostility, depression, premenstrual syndrome, and infertility, and serves as a valuable complement to treatments for patients with cancer or HIV.
Spirituality can offer three significant advantages to individuals fac-
ing illness: hope, strength, and emotional support. Through profound spiritual experiences, individuals often find a sense of peaceful contentment with their lives, including acceptance of their illness. It is essential to distinguish between "healing" and "curing." Curing pertains to the physical process of reducing the signs and symptoms of a disease at the anatomical level. Conversely, healing is a spiritual, intangible, and experiential journey that involves the integration of body, mind, and spirit. This holistic approach promotes a sense of inner tranquility. While curing is concerned with the physical integrity of the body, healing focuses on the overall completeness of the individual. Both processes can occur either simultaneously or separately; it is entirely possible to experience healing without achieving a cure, or to be cured without undergoing genuine healing. Studies have suggested a possible connection between spiritual well-being and physical recovery. Therefore, an ideal goal for healthcare should be to ensure that all patients achieve
some level of healing, irrespective of whether they are cured.
Mode of Action:
Recent intriguing studies have aimed to clarify the biological mechanisms that may account for the influence of spirituality and religion on human health and the recovery process from illness. Alterations in brain electrical activity through electroencephalography (EEG) during meditation was documented in early 1974. Significant electrical variations were observed in the frontal lobe of the brain while in a meditative state. Additional research has suggested that specific changes in brain function are involved. Spirituality should not serve to diminish the role of religion; instead, we ought to prioritize a concept that benefits all patients in both technical and practical settings. Additionally, religion if property practices may serve as a means for patients to achieve spiritual harmony. However, if healthcare professionals rely solely on the notion of religion, they risk overlooking the holistic needs of non-religious individuals.
Spiritual retreats alter the brain's feel-good chemical systems:
Researchers at The Marcus Institute of Integrative Health, part of Thomas Jefferson University, have identified alterations in the dopamine and serotonin systems within the brains of participants who attended retreats. Given that serotonin and dopamine play crucial roles in the brain's reward and emotional
systems, these findings shed light on the reasons behind the profound positive emotional experiences associated with such practices. Post-retreat brain scans indicated a reduction in dopamine transporter binding by 5-8 percent and serotonin transporter binding by 6.5 percent, potentially increasing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the brain. This increase is linked to enhanced positive emotions and spiritual sensations. Specifically, dopamine is key in regulating cognition, emotion, and movement, while serotonin contributes to emotional stability and mood regulation. Additionally, research has shown that individuals who engage in regular spiritual practices exhibit cortical thickening in the prefrontal cortex. In contrast, it is noteworthy that those suffering from chronic depression tend to experience cortical thinning in the same area of the brain.
Neurotransmitters and Spiritual Practices:
Dopamine: Engaging in spiritual activities, such as connecting with nature or a divine entity, can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to feelings of pleasure and reward, potentially fostering a more optimistic perspective on life.
Serotonin: Spiritual practices may exhibit antidepressant properties due to their ability to elevate levels of serotonin.
Melatonin and AVP: Elevated concentrations of melatonin and arginine vasopressin (AVP) also play a
role in the antidepressant benefits associated with spiritual practices.
ß-endorphin and NMDAr Antagonism: Research indicates that meditation can enhance levels of ßendorphin and antagonize NMDAr, both of which contribute to its antidepressant effects.
Neuroplasticity and Spirituality:
Neuroplasticity: Participating in activities such as meditation, mindfulness, and expressions of gratitude can enhance neuroplasticity, enabling the brain to adapt and strengthen its resilience.
Visualisation: Visualisation, commonly employed in various spiritual practices, utilises neuroplasticity by reinforcing neural pathways through the repeated mental imagery of favourable outcomes.
To summarise, spirituality significantly impacts how patients deal with chronic illness, suffering, and loss. Spirituality is a supportive adjust to scientific treatment. But relying on spirituality alone may not help in adequate healing. It is imperative for physicians to acknowledge and respond to the various aspects of their patients' suffering—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. This understanding is crucial for delivering compassionate care. By nurturing compassion and actively listening to patients' hopes, fears, and beliefs, we can improve our effectiveness as physicians and become authentic partners in their life and death journeys, incorporating these beliefs into their treatment plans

IMPLEADING NON-SIGNATORIES
TO AN ARBITRATION AGREEMENT BY THE ARBITRATOR–AN EVOLVING SUBJECT
In this article, I intend to share my thoughts on a recent judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the case of ASF Buildtech Pvt Limited Vs Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Private Limited [LSI-488-SC-2025-(NDEL)] where the Hon’ble Supreme Court upheld the power of the Arbitrator to implead a non-signatory.
This view is in harmony with the overall mandate that for Arbitration to remain a viable and effective alternative dispute resolution mechanism, it is imperative to ensure that commercial reality does not outgrow this mechanism. Furthermore, there is no gainsay in reiterating that the mechanisms of arbitration must be sufficiently elastic to accommo-
date the complexities of multi-party and multi-contract arrangements without compromising foundational principles such as consent and party autonomy. Moreover, it is not a settled proposition in jurisprudence that the approach of Courts and Tribunals must be responsive to the emerging commercial practices and expectations of the parties who submit themselves to it.
The Hon’ble Court without mincing words was pleased to hold as follows:
“We are of the considered opinion, that recognition of the power of joinder or impleadment of a nonsignatory by an arbitral tribunal is a necessary intendment of the express provisions of Section(s) 2(1)(h) and
7 and the overall scheme and object of the Act, 1996 as well as the fundamental cannons of the law of arbitration of providing an effective alternative dispute resolution mechanism.” 1. Tracing back into time
The Hon’ble Supreme Court in the landmark judgment in the case of Chloro Controls India Private Limited Vs Severn Trent Water Purification Inc (2013)1 SCC 641 was called upon to determine an arbitration reference in case of multi-party agreements where performance of the ancillary agreements was substantially dependent upon effective execution of the principal agreement. The Hon’ble Court held that in exceptional cases involving composite transactions with multi-party
The Hon’ble Supreme Court in the landmark judgment in the case of Chloro Controls India Private Limited Vs Severn Trent Water Purification Inc (2013)1 SCC 641 was called upon to determine an arbitration reference in case of multi-party agreements where performance of the ancillary agreements was substantially ependent upon effective execution of the principal agreement.
agreements, a non-signatory could be subjected to arbitration by virtue of the ‘group of companies’ doctrine, provided there was a clear intention of the parties to bind both the signatory as well as non-signatory parties to the arbitration agreement.
The Court further observed that although the scope of an arbitration agreement is limited to the parties who entered into it, yet the doctrine of ‘group of companies’ has found favour albeit in a limited sense both under the English Law which was the original genesis of the Act, 1996 and under the international commercial arbitration landscape, particularly in the United States and French jurisdictions in a limited sense both under the English Law which was the original genesis of the Act, 1996 and under the international commercial arbitration landscape, particularly in the United
States and French jurisdictions.
However, in the said judgment, the Hon’ble Supreme Court went on to hold that that the referral Court under Section 11(6) of the Arbitration & Conciliation Act, 1996 would need to determine whether a nonsignatory would need to be impleaded or not. This rudimentary understanding and legislative position of the extent of judicial scrutiny and determination at the referral stage in terms of Section 11 of the Act, 1996, could be said to be the second reason why arbitral tribunals were not found to be empowered to identify and implead a non-signatory to the arbitration agreement.
In the aftermath of Chloro Controls (supra), the Law Commission of India in its 246th Report observed that a party to an arbitration agreement does not necessarily mean only the signatory to such agree -
ment, and that internationally it has been widely accepted that even non-signatories may be parties to the arbitration agreement. The Law Commission of India further took note of the decision of Chloro Controls (supra), more particularly how the Court has recognized this concept in the phrase “claiming through or under” in Section 45 of the Act. However, noticing the absence of the same expression in the corresponding provision of Section 8 and other relevant provisions where the context requires recognition of non-signatories, the Law Commission suggested that Section 2(1) (h) of the Act, 1996 which defines “party” be amended and the phrase “person claiming through or under such party” be inserted to cure this anomaly.
Based on the suggestions made by the Law Commission, the legis-
lature promptly introduced the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Act, 2015 whereby inter-alia although Section 8 sub-section (1) of the Act, 1996 was amended and the phrase “a party to an arbitration agreement or any person claiming through or under him” was inserted yet for reasons unknown, the suggestion for amending Section 2(1)(h) of the Act by the Law Commission did not see the light of day.
With the passage of time, recently, the Constitution Bench of the Hon’ble Supreme Court subsequently in Cox and Kings Limited (2024) 4 SCC 1 after an extensive examination of the international practices and the scheme of Act, 1996 held that the ‘Group of Companies’ doctrine was invariably a part of the larger arbitration framework that has been developing across the world and was in tune with the avowed object of the Act of 1996 which aims to make the Indian arbitration law more responsive to the
contemporary requirements. It is pertinent to note that the ‘Group of Companies’ doctrine functions on a completely different tangent whereby, a non-signatory is held bound by the arbitration agreement in its own individual capacity AND in addition to the signatories on the basis of mutual consent, regardless of whether they may have derived any rights or benefits from the signatories and independent of the identity of the signatories.
2. Conclusion
The judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in ASF Buildtech Pvt Limited (supra) reiterates the principle that there is no inhibition in the Act which precludes the Arbitral Tribunal from impleading a non-signatory on its own accord. This stands clear from the following passage as extracted from the judgment:
“From the above exposition of law, it can be seen that there is nothing within the scheme of the Act,
1996, which prohibits or restrains an arbitral tribunal from, impleading a non-signatory to the arbitration proceedings on its own accord. So long as such impleadment is undertaken upon a consideration of the applicable legal principles — including, but not limited to, the doctrines of ‘group of companies’, ‘alter ego’, ‘composite transaction’, and the like —the arbitral tribunal is fully empowered to summon the non-signatory to participate in the arbitration. This autonomy stems from the broad jurisdiction conferred upon arbitral tribunals under the Act, 1996 to rule upon their own jurisdiction, including any objections with respect to the existence or validity of the arbitration agreement, as enshrined under Section 16. The impleadment of a non-signatory, being fundamentally a question of jurisdiction and consent falls squarely within the province of the tribunal's powers, free from any statutory prohibition.” [Emphasis added]

GIFT City operates under a specialised legal framework backed by an intelligent confluence of legislationincluding Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA), the Income Tax Act, and the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act (IFSCA Act).
GIFT City: India’s Global Gateway for NRIs
A New Era in Indian Finance
India is rapidly transforming its financial landscape, and at the heart of this change lies Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). As India’s first operational International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), GIFT City offers a globally competitive ecosystem for NonResident Indians (NRIs). Designed to combine international flexibility with Indian regulatory security, it is a unique financial jurisdiction that enables seamless cross-border investments.
Why was GIFT City Created?
In the early 2000s, policymakers identified a major gap: India lacked a financial hub comparable to global centres like Dubai and Singapore. Despite being one of the largest and fastest-growing economies, India’s
financial services were largely fragmented, highly regulated, and limited in global reach.
As a result, billions of dollars in international financial services— investment banking, asset management, and currency trading—were flowing out of India to foreign jurisdictions. The loss wasn’t just in capital—it was in jobs, expertise, and strategic influence.
To plug this outflow and reclaim India’s share of the global financial pie, the idea of GIFT City was conceived by the Government of Gujarat in 2007, later supported by the Central Government and by 2015, GIFT City was formally notified as India’s first IFSC under the SEZ Act. It aims to offer a globally competitive ecosystem within India that would match international standards in infrastructure, regulation, and ease of doing business.
Tax and Regulatory Advantages for NRIs
GIFT City operates under a specialised legal framework backed by an intelligent confluence of legislation - including Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA), the Income Tax Act, and the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act (IFSCA Act). These regulations provide NRIs with significant advantages, such as:
• The ability to invest and transact in foreign currencies (e.g., USD, EUR, GBP) without FEMA restrictions.
• Exemptions from key taxation rules applicable in mainland India, including lower or zero withholding tax on certain investments.
• A streamlined regulatory environment under the IFSCA, replacing otherwise fragmented oversight by multiple agencies like SEBI, RBI,
and IRDAI.
Addressing Currency Risks and Repatriation Issues
One of the biggest concerns for NRIs investing in India is rupee depreciation, which historically ranges from 3% to 5% annually against the US dollar, making longterm income or capital gains from Indian investments vulnerable to currency erosion. The problem is compounded by the fact that all income earned by NRIs in mainland India is computed and taxed in INR, which means that even if an NRI earns a notional gain, much of it may be wiped out by forex conversion losses during repatriation.
One of the most powerful features of the GIFT City is the ability to operate entirely in foreign currency, including USD, EUR, or GBP. This is made possible by the FEMA (International Financial Services Centre) Regulations, 2015, which allow NRIs—to transact, hold, and repatriate funds in foreign currency through IFSCregistered institutions.
Why does that matter? Income earned from IFSC-based invest -
ments—such as interest, capital gains from IFSC-listed securities etc—can accrue and be repatriated in USD, bypassing the need to convert to INR altogether. This drastically reduces currency risk and ensures that an NRI’s after-tax value is preserved. Certain securities traded on IFSC exchanges are even exempt from capital gains tax, further enhancing post-tax returns.
A Game-Changer for NRI
Wealth Management
Traditional NRI investment options in India, such as real estate and bank deposits, often come with heavy tax and compliance burdens. GIFT City provides alternatives through:
• IFSC Banking Units (IBUs): NRIs can hold foreign currency deposits that are fully exempt from income tax under Section 10 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
• Family Investment Funds (FIFs): Unique structure introduced in 2022, these vehicles allow NRIs and their families to pool global and Indian assets under one legal umbrella, with a minimum commitment of just $150,000. The
FIF can be used for long-term asset growth, private equity plays, or estate planning—making it ideal for NRI family offices.
• IFSC Exchanges: Platforms like GIFT Nifty enable NRIs to invest in Indian equities and debt instruments in foreign currency, benefiting from capital gains exemptions under Section 47(viiab). The Future of NRI Investments in India
GIFT City is more than just a tax-friendly jurisdiction; it is India’s answer to global financial hubs such as Singapore and Dubai. By providing a regulatory-safe, taxefficient, and currency-flexible investment environment, it offers NRIs an unparalleled opportunity to engage with India’s growth story while ensuring optimal wealth management.
From interest income to capital gains, and from family offices to public market plays, GIFT City offers a menu of options designed for global Indians who want to stay connected to the India story without compromising on financial sophistication

The team started to function as one unit. More than the on field heroics, this resurgence is credited to the mental aspect and the dressing room environment that they could muster this year. Much of the work had to be done behind the scenes and they did it with élan.
MUMBAI INDIANSFROM DOLDRUMS TO CLOUD NINE
During last year's edition of IPL, when Hardik Pandya was brought back into the Mumbai Indians fold and handed over the reins of Mumbai Indians, expectations ran high as Hardik was the most sought after leader at that point in time, coming on the back of a brilliant two-year stint as captain of Gujarat Titans. However, not even in his wildest of dreams, would he have thought that his "homecoming" would end up like that of a war chief being left alone in a battlefield to face the wrath of his own team's fans. Even if you were to say that Mumbai Indians management was right behind him offering all support, it was apparent that things were not hunky dory within the Mumbai Indians camp and that showed on the field.
The pain was very evident and
all the brave faces that Hardik involuntarily put up didn't help one bit. I would say that the Mumbai management was also at fault for panning out the transition in such a detestable manner. Rohit was kept at bay regarding the change of guard and the fans did not approve of it either. Hardik had to bear the brunt of the fans through the entire season giving him no respite whatsoever. Fair enough to say that business interests should not have come at the cost of hurting the team's morale. They were left with no one else other than themselves to be blamed. There was no 'team' anymore and they had lost their way even before the event kicked off.
Come 2025, Mumbai Indians are on a winning spree with Rohit, Surya, Hardik, Boult and Bumrah stringing out match winning performances one after another.
What changed all of a sudden, this year? We know that the core of the team remains the same. So, what then led to the renaissance.
Firstly, the team started to function as one unit. More than the on field heroics, this resurgence is credited to the mental aspect and the dressing room environment that they could muster this year. Much of the work had to be done behind the scenes and they did it with élan. The smiles were back. All the differences were put to rest and Rohit, being the wonderful leader that he has always been over the years helped Hardik ease into the job of leading the team. He was ready to play second fiddle to Hardik and act and perform as per the team's needs. Needless to say that his inputs from across the boundary line has helped Hardik immensely this year. The team's interests
were always put in front. Hardik on the other hand started earning the trust and respect of his team. It was one step at a time for Hardik and he knew that more than anyone else. Transparency in communication within the fold led to the players owning up to their roles and responsibilities. The thinking cap was put on collectively and it helped the team sail through as and when the team hit rough waters. It was not about one or two players anymore. Different players put their hands up in different games. More importantly players started loving each other's success. The
sight of players celebrating the success of a young rookie bowler, Vignesh Pudur from Kerala was definitely a sight to behold. The team is now slowly getting into that zone of invincibles as they willingly work towards shutting down on the loopholes.
The tournament is moving into the business end and as i pen this, I strongly believe that Mumbai Indians in this frame of mind would be the team to beat as we move closer to the playoffs. Hardik always believed in getting a second chance and as we can see that this year, he has grabbed it with both hands.
The renowned Indian commentator, journalist and sports presenter Harsha Bhogle rightly equates cricket to life, where he explains on learning life and management skills from cricket in his much acclaimed book ‘The WINNING WAY 2.0’. It's a must read for all aspiring individuals who want to succeed in life. This resurrection of Mumbai Indians can easily be seen as a case in point on how life throws you a second chance and it's up to you on how to make the maximum out of it.

BEYOND GERMS: SOAPS TO SANITY
It has been nearly half a decade since the COVID-19 pandemic brought hand hygiene into global focus. We still remember the government campaigns, NGO advisories, and posters that showed exactly how to wash our handspalms, backs, between fingers, and under nails, for at least 20 seconds. For many people, it was the first time such a basic act was explained in detail, on national television and social media. The message was simple but critical - proper handwashing can prevent disease and save lives. Hand hygiene is more than just preventing COVID; many illnesses like the flu, diarrhoea, and other infections spread through contaminated hands and poor personal hygiene.
The 5th of May is observed as World Hand Hygiene Day - an initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote hand
hygiene. It is a reminder that basic hygiene practices are still one of the most effective tools in preventing diseases. Personal hygiene such as bathing, oral care, and clean clothing is important not just for health, but also for our dignity in the society. But in today’s world, hygiene goes beyond just protecting us from germs. While handwashing and personal cleanliness are still important, they are only part of the larger picture. Our daily lives and wellbeing is shaped by many factorsthe information we consume, the stress we deal with, or the constant digital overload. Just as germs can infect the body, negative thoughts, emotional baggage, and toxic online environments can affect our mental and emotional health. Hygiene has to be more comprehensive, covering not just our physical health, but also our emotional, mental, and digital
well-being.
Classic Hygiene: The basics still matter
As discussed, hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that over 80% of infections are transmitted through touch, making handwashing with soap essential. Soap helps break down oils and dirt that trap germs, while the mechanical action of rubbing the hands together helps dislodge and remove contaminants. While alcohol-based hand sanitisers are convenient, it is important to remember that they are less effective in killing certain germs like norovirus (causes gastroenteritis or stomach flu), Clostridium difficile (severe diarrhoea and colitis), and Cryptosporidium (gastrointestinal illness and diarrhoea), which require

more thorough cleansing with soap and water.
In addition to hand hygiene, other personal hygiene practices, such as regular bathing, oral care, and grooming, are also crucial for preventing infections and maintaining overall health. Bathing removes dirt, sweat, and oils from the skin, reducing the risk of skin infections or irritation. Brushing and flossing prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria that can lead to gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. Maintaining proper hygiene also has significant mental health benefits. Cleanliness is commonly associated with self-respect and confidence, which can improve overall emotional wellbeing. Good hygiene practices help protect not only your physical health but also your mental and emotional balance.
Mental Hygiene: Managing
what enters our mind
We live in a time where the mind is constantly under pressure from the information we consume, the people we interact with, and the environments we inhabit. Mental hygiene is a lot more than just “positive thinking.” It is also about what we allow into our mental space, how we process emotions, and those coping mechanisms we build to reduce mental clutter and stress. Various studies have time and again proved that prolonged exposure to stressors like digital distractions, unresolved emotional issues, and chaotic environments can contribute to anxiety, sleep disturbances, burnout, and even weaken immunity. Like physical hygiene, improving mental hygiene also requires consistent and structured habits.
Digital Hygiene: With the average person spending over 6 hours
per day on digital devices, maintaining digital hygiene has become crucial for mental health. Excessive screen time and constant exposure to social media can lead to cognitive overload, anxiety, and decreased attention span. Excessive screen time, especially before bed, can disrupt sleep, and also increase the risk of mental health issues including depression and anxiety.
• Set screen time limits: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting screen time to 1 hour per day for children aged 2–5 years. For adults, experts suggest keeping recreational screen time under 2 hours a day. There are mobile apps that can help us track the screen time and even lock us out from social media apps, if we are getting addicted to them
• Take digital detoxes: Designate certain hours of the day or en-

tire days for no screen time to give your mind a break.
• Curate your feeds carefully: Social media algorithms track your usage and browsing patterns, showing you more of what you engage with. If you follow stressful or negative content, the platform will feed you more of the same. Instead, follow accounts that educate, inspire, or support your goals to create a healthier digital environment.
Relational Hygiene: We know that our relationships greatly influence our mental health. Toxic or stressful interactions can lead to chronic emotional strain, which in turn can contribute to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and even lead up to other lifestyle diseases including cardiovascular issues.
• Set boundaries: Assess your relationships and set boundaries where necessary. It is crucial to learn to say a ‘NO’, where it is required. Communicate effectively - an open, honest communication can prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.
• Prioritise positive relationships: Invest time in relationships that provide support and encouragement. Social support is a protective factor against mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Emotional Hygiene: Emotional hygiene refers to regularly addressing and managing your emotions before they become overwhelming.
• Acknowledge and express emotions: Instead of suppressing negative feelings, acknowledge them. When you feel a negative emotion like anger, sadness, or anxiety, don’t ignore or push it away. Instead, name the emotion (“I’m feeling frustrated” or “This is making me anxious”). Research shows that labeling what you are feeling helps
the brain process it better, making the emotion feel less intense and easier to deal with. Find healthy ways to express emotions, such as journaling or talking to a trusted friend.
• Practice gratitude: Regularly practicing gratitude has been linked to improved emotional health.
• Declutter regularly and maintain a routine: The physical environment around you also can impact your mental state. Keeping your living and working spaces decluttered and organised, and creating a daily routine can help reduce mental strain.
• Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness-based practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress levels. Mindfulness meditation can significantly reduce our stress levels and improve both physical and mental health.
Our body is always in the present moment, but our mind often drifts either to the past, which may bring feelings of guilt, or to the future, which can lead to anxiety or worry. Mindfulness is the practice of bringing the mind back to the present by focusing on what is happening right now.
One effective way to do this is through the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, which uses your senses to anchor you in the moment: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. This method helps interrupt racing thoughts and re-centers your attention on the present, reducing stress and increasing awareness.
Sleep Hygiene: India is among the most sleep-deprived countries in the world. Poor sleep doesn’t just
cause fatigue; it has a significant impact on both mental and physical health. Inadequate sleep reduces cognitive function, impairs memory, and increases the risk of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. It also elevates cortisol levels (the stress hormone), raises the risk of heart disease, and reduces insulin sensitivity, which can contribute to metabolic disorders like diabetes. Prioritizing good sleep is essential for overall well-being.
• Establish a sleep routine: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. A consistent sleep schedule improves sleep quality.
• Create a sleep-friendly environment: Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet.
• Avoid stimulants before bed: Limit caffeine intake in the evening. Ideally, avoid coffee after 4 pm as it can keep you alert and interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Also, reduce screen time at least an hour before bed. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and TVs can suppress the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.
Lifestyle Hygiene: Habits for long-term health
Nutrition Hygiene: Maintaining good nutritional hygiene means following a diet that is scientific, sensible, and sustainable. That means avoiding extreme or harsh diet trends, and instead focusing on balanced meals that you can stick to over time. A healthy diet includes the right mix of macronutrientsprotein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates, as well as micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. Overeating, even the healthiest foods, can lead to health issues such as fatty liver, high cholesterol, and
weight gain. Similarly, it’s not just about calories; the quality of your food matters too. High levels of sodium, trans fats, and food additives can negatively impact your health even in small portions. A sensible approach also means understanding how food combinations affect nutritional value. For example, pairing a healthy dish with sugar-laden beverages or deep-fried sides can make the meal unhealthy overall. Example - Brown bread with sugary jam! A sustainable diet also includes room for flexibility. You don’t need to eliminate all foods that are considered “unhealthy.” In fact, including occasional pleasurable foods in moderation helps prevent feelings of restriction and reduces the risk of binge eating later. Following an 80–20 approach where 80% of your
food choices are nutritious and 20% allow for indulgences is more realistic and easier to maintain over the long term. Trying to eat 100% clean all the time can lead to mental fatigue, food obsession, or rebound eating, especially in social or stressful situations. The goal is to build habits that are practical, consistent, and enjoyable, rather than extreme and unsustainable. Remember - a balanced approach is far more effective than short-term diets and restrictions.
Exercise: Regular physical activity is not just about weight management; it plays a key role in heart health, insulin sensitivity, mood regulation, and sleep quality. Exercise helps regulate hormones like cortisol and endorphins, improves blood circulation, and enhances muscle
and bone strength. It also supports brain function and reduces the risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Exercise also elevates our mood - thanks to the happy hormones that are produced with increased physical activity.
The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week for adults. This can include cardio, cycling, strength training, or yoga. Even simple movement throughout the day like taking stairs, stretching, or walking after meals can make a significant difference.
Remember, when it comes to hygiene (any hygiene) consistency matters more than intensity; what counts is making all these activities a regular part of your lifestyle

In leadership roles, ego provides the inner strength to assert authority and be an inspiration for others. A charismatic leader often has a well-calibrated ego that inspires confidence among the followers.
EGO: THE DOUBLEEDGED SWORD
Ego, it is such a common term we often use in our day-to-day conversations. This very familiar word is often laden with negative connotations, but we all know it is indeed a complex and essential part of the human psyche. Ego plays a crucial role in shaping our identity, moulding our characters/behaviours, managing our self-esteem and controlling our perception of the world outside. Positively, in both professional and personal spheres, ego can act as a super catalyst for triggering ambition and confidence to trailblaze towards success. But unchecked, it can lead destructively to arrogance, conflict, biasedness and stagnation. Thoroughly understanding the dual nature of ego and learning to manage it skillfully is a powerful inevitable tool for long-term success, fulfilment and mental peace.
The positive role of ego in our lives inherently gives us a sense of
purpose and identity. It fuels resilience, helps forgiveness, drives ambition, and empowers individuals to take up accountability and initiative. In the professional realm, a healthy ego can foster assertiveness, proper discernment, leadership and innovation. In our personal lives, it helps us to stay grounded, maintain healthy boundaries, assert our needs, validate ourselves, engage in constructive communication and build selfrespect.
A well-balanced ego enables individuals to believes in their own selfworth and abilities. Confidence and ambition, by-products of healthy ego, encourage risk-taking, push individuals to strive hard for excellence, courageously break patterns and surpass limitations. When facing criticism or undeserved rejection, a resilient ego maintains self-worth, understand one’s own essence and value, which in turn helps one to improve and take new successful
detours rather than to succumb to defeat. In leadership roles, ego provides the inner strength to assert authority and be an inspiration for others. A charismatic leader often has a well-calibrated ego that inspires confidence among the followers. In personal relationships, ego plays a role in maintaining personal boundaries, self-respect and dignity. It boldly allows individuals to advocate for their needs, speak up against injustice, prevent being taken advantage of and contribute healthily to interpersonal dynamics.
While rightly nurtured, Ego can be empowering, however, when inflated or wounded, it becomes a significant barrier to harmony and personal/professional growth. An unchecked ego often manifests reactive bursts, arrogance, stubbornness, cold/silent treatments, inability to accept criticism or to engage in productive communication, biased towards genders/situations, or the
inability to open up and collaborate. An inflated ego oftentimes will create a superiority over others. This can lead to poor teamwork, alienation, and a toxic work culture. Arrogance blinds a person to their own flaws, improvement areas and value/thank of others’ contributions in their life. A negatively inflated ego often resides in admitting mistakes or accepting feedback or missing opportunities to make the very necessary changes for development. Ego-driven behaviours can strain
relationships. It makes one want to dominate conversations, control situations that leads to conflict, resentment and emotional distance due to misunderstanding. Ego can also trap individuals in their comfort zones. Fear of failure, appearing vulnerable or being exposed may prevent them from seeking help or initiating responsible actions. Over time, this leads to stagnation and isolation. Decisions made from egocentric perspective often lack objectivity. Such decisions tweaks facts
and may prioritise personal pride over collective welfare, leading to suboptimal results.
As Sigmund Freud wisely states, “The ego is not master in its own house”. In relationships, ego can manifest as jealousy, possessiveness, or the refusal to compromise. Egodriven individuals fail to see things from the other person’s perspective. This lack of empathy can make the other person feel unseen, unheard, rejected, abandoned, undervalued, and push them to chasms of despair.
Over time, relations become transactional or toxic, lacking the reciprocity needed to thrive. Instead of approaching disagreements with constructive communication, empathy, a desire to understand the other person’s feelings, ego pushes individuals to win arguments and to punish people around them. Over time, constant power struggles lead to permanent disconnection, resentment and irreparable emotional distance.
Ego can significantly influence dynamics, performance, growth and culture. Leaders with balanced ego inspire loyalty and innovation, recognizing the importance of humility and inclusiveness. Collaborations thrive in such environments bringing ensured sustained success. When people prioritise team’s success over personal recognition, productivity and morale soar. Ego clashes, on the other hand, can be very detrimental, can derail projects and fracture teams. With bad ego, disagreements become personal battles rather than constructive feedbacks. Emotional intelligence and ego management are key to resolving conflicts diplomatically. Those who balance goals with humility are more likely to earn respect and opportunities. Holding grudges, inability to forgive, refusing to compromise, unable to let go are ego-based behaviours. They prevent reconciliation, resolutions, keeping conflicts aggravated and relationships strained. Ego can fuel negative self-talk and set unrealistic expectations. When our ego is bruised, we may deny others justice, react with anger or withdrawal, sabotaging meaningful connections and personal happiness. It negatively affects your mental and physical health as well.
To successfully harness the positive aspects of ego, while mitigating the negative, individuals must turn inward and develop self-awareness. Mastery over ego is not suppression, but understanding and managing it skillfully. The first step is to recognise its presence. Regular selfreflection, mindfulness, identifying ego-driven patterns, can be a foundation of change. Vulnerability counters the ego’s need for control, and fosters authentic connections. Individuals who are transparent, authentic and show vulnerability are often perceived as more trustworthy and relatable. Welcoming feedback of any genre/type, and acting on it is a sign of mature ego. It demonstrates commitment to learning and improvement, essential traits for success. Gratitude shifts focus from self to others. Empathy fosters genuine understanding and connection. Ego often ties self-worth to external achievements and materialistic success. Clear boundaries prevent exploitation and burn-out. Ego is a double-edged sword that can either empower or undermine our personal and professional lives. When understood and managed effectively, it fuels confidence, ambition, connection, peace, harmony, love, accountability and leadership. When left unchecked, it breeds arrogance, disconnection, disharmony, conflict, and isolation. In cultivating selfawareness, we not only enhance our own success and well-being, but also contribute positively to the lives, endeavors and future of those around us. The journey of mastering ego is lifelong, but it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding paths to personal excellence and authentic connection
THE GUT FEELING: HOW PROBIOTICS TRANSFORM YOUR HEALTH
Have you ever wondered why your grandmother swore by that jar of homemade pickles or a bowl of yoghurt every day? Or why the latest health trend seems to be all about probiotics and gut health? It turns out, she was onto something! Fermented foods, those tangy, tasty treats like dosa, idli, raita, and pickles, are more than just flavourful additions to your meals—they're packed with powerful health benefits. From supporting digestion to boosting your immune system and
even improving your mood, these foods play a huge role in keeping you feeling your best. In this article, we’ll dive into how these ancient foods can transform your health, one bite at a time. Ready to discover the power of probiotics? What Are Fermented Foods?
Fermentation is a natural process in which microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, or moulds break down food sugars into acids or alcohol. This process enhances the food’s shelf life, alters its flavour,
and can even make certain nutrients more bioavailable. Popular examples of fermented foods in Indian cuisine include yoghurt, curd, raita, idli, dosa, dhokla, pickles (especially mango and lime), and kanji. Internationally, foods like kimchi, miso, and kombucha (a fermented tea) are also rich in live bacteria, or probiotics, which play a crucial role in maintaining gut health.
Role of Probiotics in Gut Health
The human gut is home to trillions of bacteria, both good and
bad. The balance between these bacteria is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. When the balance is disrupted, it can lead to various health issues, such as bloating, indigestion, and even mood disorders. Probiotics, found in fermented foods, help restore this balance by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting the growth of harmful microbes.
One of the key benefits of probiotics is their ability to improve digestion. By supporting the gut microbiome, probiotics enhance the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food. This can help alleviate common digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Moreover, research suggests that probiotics can boost the immune system. Since a significant portion of the immune system is located in the gut, maintaining a healthy gut flora is essential for defending against infections. Probiotics can help strengthen the gut lining and increase the production of certain antibodies, providing a first line of defense against pathogens. Fermented Foods and Mental Health
The gut-brain connection has garnered significant attention in recent years. Studies have shown that the health of our gut can di-
rectly influence our mental health, including mood, stress levels, and cognitive function. The gut produces a large portion of the body’s serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood and emotional well-being. By supporting gut health with probiotics from fermented foods, we may also be supporting better mental health.
Research has linked the consumption of fermented foods to reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. While more studies are needed, the evidence suggests that the beneficial bacteria found in these foods can positively impact brain function by regulating inflammation and promoting the production of neurotransmitters.
Benefits Beyond Digestion
Fermented foods offer more than just digestive benefits. Many of them are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, vitamin K, and various minerals like calcium and magnesium. For example, idli, dosa, and dhokla are excellent sources of B vitamins and fibre, which are important for overall digestive health and heart health.
Additionally, fermented foods contain compounds that may help detoxify the body. The fermentation process can break down harmful substances, such as lectins or phytates, which may interfere with
nutrient absorption. As a result, the nutrients in fermented foods are often easier for the body to absorb and utilise.
Incorporating Fermented Foods into Your Diet
Adding fermented foods to your daily diet is relatively simple. Start with a small serving of curd or raita with your meal, and enjoy a plate of idli or dosa in the morning. Kombucha is another great international option, and kimchi can add an exciting zing to your salads. Miso can be used to flavor soups, while Indian pickles and kanji provide a burst of flavour and probiotic benefits. As you introduce these foods into your diet, you’ll not only enjoy their unique flavours but also reap the many health benefits they offer. As you can see, fermented foods are much more than just a trendy addition to your meals— they’re a delicious way to nurture your gut, boost your immunity, and even improve your mood. Whether you’re sipping on kombucha or enjoying a bowl of raita, you’re giving your body the gift of probiotics that help keep everything running smoothly. So, why not give it a try? Start small, add a few fermented foods to your daily routine, and see how your body responds. You might just find that these flavourful, gut-friendly foods are the key to a healthier, happier you!

It is ideal to begin exploring Hampi by first visiting the imposing Vijaya Vithala Temple which dates back to the 15th century. It is a visual symphony created out of stone.
HAMPI: AN ENCHANTING SYMPHONY IN STONE
Are you looking for a destination that takes you back in time, offering a visual treat with a dash of spirituality? Then pack your bags and head for Hampi in Karnataka. The capital of the erstwhile Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi was once a magnificent metropolis that rivalled other capitals in the 16th century. Though devoid of its original
splendour, the remains of this city carved in rock have enough charm to leave you bedazzled. Nestled on the bank of the Tungabhadra River, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an open-air museum strewn with more than 1,000 monuments spanning 41.5 square kilometres.
Walking amid the ruins itself is a journey back in time that will leave you speechless. Imagine
the splendour of the city before its invasion by the forces of the Deccan Muslim Sultanates. No wonder travellers such as Domingo Paes waxed eloquently on the magnificence of the edifices dotting Hampi. From every nook and cranny history and architectural splendour cast furtive glances at travellers. After the downfall of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire and the pillaging by the victori-
ous armies, Hampi was left in ruins and it was pretty much obscure until the 1880s when it was accidentally spotted by Colin Mackenzie, a British surveyor working for the East India Company. Later excavations unearthed what we see today.
Hampi’s Best-kept Secret
It is ideal to begin exploring Hampi by first visiting the imposing Vijaya Vithala Temple which dates back to the 15th century. It is a visual symphony created out of stone. Dedicated to Vithala, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, the temple has a fascinating shrine shaped like a chariot, and it is the de facto trademark of Hampi. As you enter through the massive eastern entrance tower, you will notice a series of platforms along the central axis and at the far end stands the stone chariot. It once contained an idol of Garuda, the eagle on which Vishnu rides and it faces the sanctum. The elaborate carvings cleverly disguise the several mammoth granite blocks that comprise this shrine. The chariot rests on a stone platform that is a foot high. It is decorated with motifs showing mythical battles. The gigantic stone wheels are replicas of the original as you can see the shafts and the brakes as well. There is a series of concentric floral patterns on the wheels.
The temple boasts elaborately carved pavilions having depictions from Hindu mythology. Worth mentioning is the Mahamandapa whose grand balustrades are flanked by stone elephants. The centre of attraction is the pavilion that sits on a stone platform carved with figures of horses and flowers. The pavilion used to witness dance performances in the days of yore. But its best kept secret are the musical pillars. The 56 pillars carved from single blocks of granite are also known as the singing stones as they produce the sounds of musical instruments and Carnatic notes. When there were dances for the royalty, musicians
would gently strike the pillars with sandalwood sticks to create music. Royal Opulence in Stone
If opulence can be expressed in stone, then there is no better example than the Royal Enclosure, which was the seat of power of the Vijayanagara Empire. In its heyday, the enclosure used to house 45 buildings, including the royal courts, tanks, temples and subterranean chambers. Blending south Indian and Mughal styles, the enclosure has three portals—two in the north and one in the west. The palaces rest on granite platforms and they face either the east or the north. The platforms are decorated with flowers, geese, demon faces and human figures. The craftsmen of those days extensively used granite and soapstone to make these edifices.
Within the Royal Enclosure, the network of stone aqueducts is worth mentioning. They connect more than 20 wells and ponds. Thanks to restoration experts, a major chunk of this network has been renovated and some portions deliver water even today. The most prominent aqueduct is the one named after King Bukka towards the north of the river. One of the most well-preserved
monuments within the enclosure is the stepped tank, which was discovered in 1985. The five-tiered tank is spread across 22 square metres and has a depth of seven metres. Its architecture which matches elegance and precision speaks volumes of the skills of the ancient master designers.
Queen’s Bath and Lotus Mahal
Another must-visit is the Queen’s Bath, which served as the bathing chamber of the ruler and his consorts. As it is located outside the enclosure, there is speculation that the bath also served as a royal pleasure house. While its exterior is spartan, its inside is ornate and the architecture is Indo-Islamic. The rectangular structure spans 30 square metres and it has a large sunken bath in the centre measuring 15 square metres and having a depth of 1.8 metres. It is surrounded by elegant vaulted corridors with pillars and projecting ornate balconies with windows.
After peeping into the Queen’s Bath, you can visit Lotus Mahal, another structure built for the royal family. The palace has equal projections on all four sides while the dome appears to resemble an open
lotus bud. Both storeys have arched openings in multiple planes and there are eight pyramidal towers over the corners and one big one in the middle supported by 24 pillars. Each pillar has carvings of aquatic flora and fauna.
Where to Stay
Hampi is dotted with plenty of accommodation options to suit all types of travellers. They range from homestays and budget hotels to luxury resorts.
Dos
and Don’ts
Do dress conservatively as some of the temples are still functional. It is advisable to carry a bottle of cold water and a packet of biscuits or dry fruits with you as the long treks through the ruins can be pretty exhausting. As there is plenty of boulder-hopping along the way while you discover one ruin after the other, do wear a pair of good sneakers.
How to Reach
The nearest airport is Bellari, which is 64 km away. You can hire a taxi from the airport or take a bus to reach Hampi. Hosapete railway station is just 10 kilometres away from this town. You can also hire private taxis from cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru or even take a bus

The novel’s exploration of forgiveness, sisterhood, and the strength it takes to break destructive cycles is both timely and timeless. Crewson crafts a deeply affecting story that lingers long after the final page—equal parts harrowing and healing, and completely unforgettable.
