SALVATORE FERRAGAMO, THE "RAINBOW" COLLECTION

Innovation and tradition unite amid a bold and stunning spectrum: Ferragamo Eyewear presents “Rainbow”, a special eyewear introduction inspired by one of the most celebrated creations in the Ferragamo archive. The patent for the original, iconic Rainbow shoe dates back to 1938, with its cork wedge covered with multi-colour suede.

Innovative in both material and shape, it was designed by Salvatore Ferragamo for American actress Judy Garland in a bold array of colours. Although it was a far cry from the linear style of the 1940s, the shoe quickly became a must-have which encapsulated Ferragamo’s extraordinary talent for combining colour and cutting-edge design. The new “Rainbow” sunglasses draw on graphic design and extensive production techniques, pairing an aviator frame with bold, special “tattoo” style lenses which feature a digitally printed, full-colour horizontal design. The rich colour palette includes four variations in daring tones, featuring different patterns, taking the design to the next level. The Shiny Silver/Mint and Shiny Gold/Antique Rose versions have stripes on both the upper and lower parts of the lenses, while the Shiny Silver/Azure and Shiny Gold/ Petrol versions only have stripes on the upper part – with a special lens gradient treatment applied back to front, from dark at the bottom to light at the top. With “Rainbow,” Ferragamo Eyewear is writing the next chapter in a unique story that merges expertise, creativity and memory.

The Pink Star was acquired by renowned jeweller Chow Tai Fook, with the winning telephone bid placed by Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun.

The 59.6-carat diamond measures 2.69cm by 2.06cm and is set on a ring. It is the largest “internally flawless fancy vivid pink” diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America, the industry arbiter, and more than twice the size of the 24.8-carat Graff Pink, the previous record holder for the most expensive pink diamond which fetched US$46.2 million including fees in Geneva in 2010.

The previous record holder for any diamond was the Oppenheimer Blue, a 14.6-carat “vivid blue”, which sold for 56.9 million Swiss francs (HK$441 million) in Geneva last May. Chow Tai Fook, which is owned by the family of late local tycoon Cheng Yu-tung, often bought gems at public auctions.

It bought a 5.03-carat green diamond, Aurora Green, for HK$130 million last year and a 507-carat Cullinan Heritage rough diamond for HK$275 million in 2010. The Cullinan Heritage was subsequently cut and turned into a necklace.

SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS

Silverstone Auctions has enjoyed another hugely successful Race Retro Sale with celebrity cars showing star appeal and attracting bidders from around the world at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire last Saturday.

Joined by hundreds of historic motorsport and classic car enthusiasts, Friday’s Competition Car Sale achieved a very respectable 63 per cent sales rate, followed by the Classic Car Sale on Saturday when 70 per cent of lots were sold, lifting the overall sales total to a heady £3.7 million.

Undoubtedly taking centre stage was the v spec previously owned by Hollywood film star Bruce Willis and pop legend Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, which sold for £94,500, almost double its lower estimate.

Meanwhile, a superbly maintained 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550-Manual formerly owned by music royalty Sir Elton John CBE achieved one of the highest sale prices of the afternoon at £219,375.

However, two rare and modern classics from the personal collection of British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson CBE were not to be outdone. With both cars offered at no reserve, the 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E provoked a lively bidding war selling for a mighty £71,300, while the 1989 Lancia Thema 8.32 sold for an impressive £29,813.

Nick Whale, managing director at Silverstone Auctions, said: “Our Race Retro Sale has always been popular and this year’s was no exception. It was particularly pleasing to see a number of celebrity cars selling well, with respected and well-known collectors such as Rowan Atkinson and Jay Kay trusting Silverstone Auctions to achieve the best possible sale price for their cars.”

Away from the celebrity glitz and glamour, fast Fords also proved that demand remains strong. Among those selling for above their estimates were a 1980 Escort RS2000 Mk2 selling for £50,525, a 1974 Escort Mk1 RS2000 for £37,125, a 1986 Sierra RS Cosworth achieving £41,625 and a 1996 Escort RS Cosworth selling for £58,500, almost £15,000 above its lower estimate.

Other highlights included a one off 90 ‘road spec’ 1987 Ford RS200 achieving £157,500, a rare 1969 Aston Martin DBS reading just 58,000 miles selling for £99,000, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate, a 2004 Honda NSX (facelift) also exceeding its estimate, selling for £84,375.

There was also fast and furious bidding for competition cars including the 1990 BTCC Championship winning Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 ‘Group A’ model driven by Robb Gravett

which sold for £182,250, and a ready to compete 1970 Lola T210 SL210-07 that fetched £146,250.

Nick added: “Our Race Retro Sale was a great success but we’ve no time to rest on our laurels as we’re now inviting entries for our next auctions, A Sale of Ferraris in association with Ferrari Owners’ Club GB and our annual May Sale, which take place on the 18th and 19th of May. Anyone who is interested in selling at these sales should contact Silverstone Auctions early to avoid disappointment.”

WITH ITS OLDER BROTHER’S DNA 26 | UNIQUE

DOPPEL FELIX – THE NOBLE AND TIMELESSLY BEAUTIFUL RATTRAPANTE

Many will still remember the "double helix" as DNA strands from biology class. "Doppel Felix" does not only sound similar, but also has - as the name of the model suggests - the DNA of Felix, which was the starting point of the manufacture age for Habring². This DNA can be found also in Erwin, Felix's younger brother with the "jumping second".

Naturally, what is ticking inside Doppel Felix is the movement A11 developed and produced in the company Habring², which is the only manufacture calibre made in Austria to date. Despite the relatively small numbers that leave the manufacturing site in Carinthia every year, thanks to these “in-house movements” Habring² is absolutely independent from external movement suppliers.

As well as the split second movement developed and produced in-house and the cool and timeless Felix metallic look, Doppel Felix also convinces with a further novelty - the date module by Habring². The date is indicated by means of a hand (the fifth hand of the Doppel) pointing from the centre outwards to clearly discernible, large date digits located on the on the new, raised date ring at the edge of the dial. Combined, they form a very special, very aesthetic, large-digit date. Those who are more puristically tuned will pick the version with the tachymeter and telemeter scale in place of the date indication. What else is left from the Doppel 3 are, beside the Rattrapante, also the small running seconds hand as well as the minute counter on the auxiliary dials on the left and right next to the main hand axis.

While the previous Doppel had a mainly sporty appearance, Doppel Felix with its face in either Satin Silver or Grey/Anthracite and rose-golden hands and hour bars presents itself, in all simplicity, very classy and timeless. A great match are the new, tailored, top-quality leather watch bands – which are also “made in Austria”. On request, the customer can have a deployment clasp for his Doppel Felix.

Also the well-known 42 mm casing, which Habring2 gets manufactured in Austria, has undergone a facelift on this occasion: it has got a new bezel, a new casing bottom, and a new finish achieved with a combination of satination and polishing. The two popular push-buttons (start stop zero at 2 o'clock and the split hand at 10 o'clock) have been joined by a subtle recessed pushbutton at 4 o'clock. It so-to-say triggers the new date indication of Doppel Felix.

36 | UNIQUE

The Porsche 911 is viewed by some as the epitome of success or something to strive towards, but by others as a sign of poor taste and something of a hangover from the red braced‘yuppie’ era. Regardless of this, it is undeniably a design icon of modern times.

Produced in its first form in 1963 there have been more than seven generations of 911 to date and astonishingly the design has stayed almost the same during its whole lifespan. The premise is a reasonably simple one, a low slung 4 seater with the interesting ‘flat six’ engine slung out at the rear. The car has been air cooled and more recently water cooled and available in coupe, convertible and the slightly rarer ‘Targa’ and ‘Speedster’ body styles.

Critics are sometimes quick to deride the 911 but they are usually those who have never driven one. They would jest that it looks like a VW Beetle or that the engine in the back prevents it from being a true sports/ supercar. Again often not speaking from experience.

The modern day 911 range has many variants, two wheel drive, four wheel drive, the more recent ‘base’ model Carrera is now turbocharged and at the top of the power-tree is the mighty 991 Turbo.

However, one variant of 911 has always intrigued me, slightly stripped out and lighter, with a race derived engine block, the ultra-exclusive ‘must-have’ for our supercar club Auto Vivendi was the new second generation ’GT3’.

UNIQUE | 37

When our car arrived in its sublime Miami Blue paintwork it took a few seconds to drink it in. It’s more vivid than other Porsche which are often in quite muted colours. With a huge rear wing and ‘knock-off’ wheels this one screams performance, and whilst you can hustle it along the roads at a very brisk pace where allowed, it’s on the track that it truly comes alive.

We arrange a series of exclusive ‘on-track experiences’ from the private member’s Ascari Race Resort in Spain to bespoke days at the Top Gear test track, so recently we found ourselves at the Top Gear track and the new GT3 had been requested by our client…

We nosed the blue German weapon out on to the famous circuit and within a few laps it was obvious that this was something very special. The car is so poised and with four wheel steering it dances through the corners so effortlessly that it can make an average pilot feel like a fully-fledged racing driver!

38 | UNIQUE
UNIQUE | 39

As you nail the loud pedal, it properly comes to life at a staggering 6000RPM then storming on to a frankly insane 9000RPM with the four litre lump bellowing in appreciation all the way. The seven speed PDK gearbox seems to have powers of telepathy and the correct gear always seems to be at your fingertips and before long the GT3 is dancing to your oh-so-special ballet.

I got out of the GT3 that day and it felt something like a Top Gear episode. I could almost hear the emotive music playing as the shot faded to a slow-mo of the wheels spinning coming out of the corner, this car makes you feel like a driving god, and that’s a very good feeling indeed.

Ok, enough misty eyed rhetoric from me, our GT3 will shortly be leaving us as we have the new (and even more sought after) GT3 Touring edition coming soon, and this time with the purists favourite – a manual gearbox so no time for emotional nostalgia from yours truly. I will miss it though. It comfortably sits alongside our Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini with no hint of embarrassment.

Make no mistake, this car is sensational, and at around £130,000 it could well be the supercar bargain of the century.

When you’ve been making one model of car for over fifty years, you must be doing something right and I’d challenge anyone to drive the GT3 and not get out wanting one. It’s that good.

Perfect match:

the concept of Fine Natural Design— a combination of artistic creativity and natural treasures.

It may be difficult to imagine that a city in Arizona with a population of 500,000 annually becomes the world’s largest platform for gem, jewelry, mineral and the fossil trade. Just as interesting, this gathering of 750,000 diverse enthusiasts has occurred every year for over 40 years.

From January through February, over 50 gem, mineral, & fossil shows occur throughout the city of Tucson, Arizona, including an exquisite show at Granada Gallery. This is a surprising discovery to those visiting Southern Arizona for the first time. Even frequent visitors there would not have any idea of this huge event if the visits occurred at any other time of the year. Huge tents spring up overnight, hotels are filled to over-capacity, shows last for a few days or weeks and then, when it is over, disappear until the next year.

It can be said that we often get lost in today‘s fast paced, hyper-mobile world, forgetting the fragility and transience of human life. We’re only a grain of sand on the timeline of earth‘s history, and emblems from millions and billions of years of evolution powerfully remind us of that. Sparkling crystals and gems formed deep beneath earth‘s surface, ancient creatures of an otherworldly likeness, and dinosaurs of great proportions all are reawakened in the heart of Tucson, under the roof of Granada Gallery.

There you will find a lovingly restored 1908 Craftsman style home. It has been carefully converted into an extraordinary art gallery. Founded in 2013 by Rüdiger Pohl and Alison Magovern, the gallery is located on Granada Avenue in Tucson. Alison is the daughter of an acclaimed fossil preparator and paleo enthusiast. She uses her goldsmith training and eye to curate some of the most exceptional jewelers and gem cutters in the world. Rüdiger also holds a leading position in the Swiss-based company, Interprospekt, which integrates various global initiatives in mining, excavation and trade. Interprospekt aims to further higher education and knowledge surrounding natural history and geological rarities through its multiple museums and exhibitions seen worldwide. Thus, the gallery provides an appropriate framework for their natural treasures and unparalleled artistic works.

Their backgrounds influence the couple to incorporate special themes and exhibitions into the gallery, showcasing different collections and educational installations. For example, this year’s “Gem Room” featured a range of extremely rare Pezzottaite beryls from Madagascar. This was a unique composition of never seen before quality, size and variety of this rare gemstone. The Gem Room was dimly lit and the beryls glowed a vivid hot pink.

Through its different approach, Granada Gallery aspires to bring together outstanding international artists, museum curators, dealers, and worldwide renowned collectors. They acknowledge not only the artist’s work but also the rare, natural treasures with which they are working. In a subtle yet elegant way, this gallery truly bridges the gap between natural history, forward thinking design and the creative power of art.

Together with the Granada Collection, an exclusive assemblage of unique natural treasures, Granada Gallery features some of the world’s most influential artists working with rare and often almost impossible to find natural and precious materials. Their one-of-a-kind objects create a captivating and informative experience based on the world of natural history and design, forging the gallery’s theme of ‘Fine Natural Design’.

Since its opening, Granada Gallery has received a large amount of support and positive response from industry professionals and general visitors alike. A visit to Grenada Gallery is exciting not only because of the various treasures; the opportunity to talk with the artists who are frequently in attendance, provides to visitors a unique understanding of how museum quality gems, jewels and fossils are created, restored or maintained.

This year, at Granada Gallery, one could visit “The Shark Tank” - a special exhibition of fossilized sharks, on display to the public for the first time. The theme focused on depicting the extraordinary evolution of sharks through fossil specimens retaining millions of years of scientific history. This was an especially unusual presentation as sharks contain a large amount of cartilage which does not fossilise well. Dating back more than 400 million years, this humbling assemblage of fossils, offered for lease to museums and universities by Granada Gallery, gives insight into the evolution of our ocean’s apex predator, the shark.

A REVIEW OF GRANADA GALLERY 2018 AND ITS FEATURED ARTISTS

This year’s show highlighted an impressive collection of artists from around the globe. From Germany to Russia, California to New York City; the list of contributors from the gemstone carving and cutting industry featured well known names such as Gerd and Patrick Dreher, Naomi Sarna, Victor Tuzlokov, and Nicolai Medvedev.

NAOMI SARNA

Somewhere between finest craftsmanship and art, one can describe Naomi Sarna. The New York based artist works with precious metals and gemstones to create fine art jewelry and gemstone carvings. Naomi Sarna is the recipient of numerous international awards, including 23 American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Awards in both gem carving and jewelry design. Naomi uses a carving technique which works with light diffusion to play off the colors and clarity of the gemstones, and merges precious metals with fluid natural forms. The results are often fascinating aquatic-like lines and moving forms out of static objects. She has created pieces that are represented in the Smithsonian’s Permanent Collection of American Gems and private collections.

The Gallery is proud to present the work of Gerd and Patrick Dreher, 4th and 5th generation master carvers. The Dreher pieces were placed in the first room at the entrance. INTARSIA BOX BY NICOLAI MEDVEDEV.

NICOLAI MEDVEDEV

Nicolai Medvedev creates intarsia boxes, using materials such as malachite, azurite, sugallite, opal and jaspers to form his beautiful works of art. He studied western European art in Ashkhabad and Moscow, however his eye for pattern and colour was inspired by daily life in his native Turkmenia - a land of carpets, mosques, and woven textiles. He finds his motifs by cutting through specimens to reveal images like wings of a butterfly or a lotus flower to use as a centrepiece.

Nicolai has mastered this kind of work for over 40 years and has been well received for his lapidary artistry. The Garden of Delight held a special surprise; when opened it revealed a mechanical hummingbird flying out of the box.

His “Philosophical Stone” collection opened a new dimension in gemstone cutting, using symbols in a new pattern of facets. Each of the stones are accompanied by a parable, elaborating on the deep philosophical concept of Victor's designs and allowing the viewer to enjoy the works with a spiritual connection and understanding. Victor earned his Graduate's Degree from the Moscow branch of GIA, specialised in Gemology. In 2010 he founded the Russian Faceters Guild, as well as the international faceting competition, 'The Russian Open'. Today, he is engaged in faceting top-quality gemstones and creating exclusive designs. While most faceted gemstone cutters focus on reflection and refraction, Victor's work is distinguished by his understanding of dispersion, the ability to cut gems to contain internal rainbows of colour, the breaking down of white light into the spectral colours.

OCTO, TODAY’S BENCHMARK

The new interpretations of this contemporary watch tell a story of volumes and proportions, style and elegance

Right from the time of its introduction in 2012, Octo by Bulgari renewed the approach to watchmaking by bringing a modern and contemporary vision. Inspired by the architectural harmony of antiquity, its facetted case propelled watch design firmly into the millennium. Whatever its interpretations, Octo is today’s benchmark. In 2018, Bulgari is magnifying its fundamentals and reworking them in a technical material: titanium. Offered in threehand or chronograph versions, these two founding timepieces of the Octo lineage launched in 2012 are back in the spotlight with a new exterior that enhances both their character and their strength. They are joining new executions of the Roma variation with its particularly pure contours.

Since 2012, the Octo model has held a place of its own. Its daring design plays with geometry and light. Fully mastered volumes, complex lines and 110 facets achieve the tour de force of embodying both simplicity and a modern vision of elegance. Born as a three-hand watch, Octo was soon interpreted in versions forming a complete family. Some versions hold records in their category, notably in terms of extreme thinness. In parallel, the chronograph has also been drawing attention among devotees of sophisticated watches since its launch in 2014.

TITANIUM FOR OCTO L’ORIGINALE

These two timepieces representing the origins of the line appear this year in a new and eminently contemporary exterior. Titanium is a technical material greatly prized in watchmaking, as well as in industry as a whole, due to its numerous qualities, including thermal, mechanical and corrosion resistance. Historically, aeronautics and the aerospace industry were the first to use titanium. It goes into the making of most aircraft in the form of forged parts. While military equipment manufacturers see it as an essential component of modern armour-plating, medicine and surgery have leveraged its salutary potential in developing artificial limbs, joints and implants. Lightness is one of its key virtues. Titanium boasts a density 40% lower than that of steel, combined with excellent resistance to mechanical stress, fire and corrosion. Better still, titanium is biocompatible, as are gold and platinum.

The case and dial of the two reference watches in the Octo line are made from this metal. The three-hand version is equipped with a mechanical self-winding movement, Calibre BVL 191 Solotempo, driving the hours, minutes, seconds and date functions. It has a 42-hour power reserve. The chronograph is powered by the high-frequency mechanical self-winding BVL 328 Velocissimo movement. This column-wheel chronograph with a silicon escapement has a 50-hour power reserve.

OCTO ROMA,

THE QUINTESSENCE OF STYLE

In another vein and yet clearly part of the same heritage, Octo Roma enables style to take on substance. Formal design is not a theoretical exercise in spatial geometry. On the contrary, the Bulgari approach is as practical as it is contemporary. It dedicates its mastery of volumes and proportions to serving creativity and aesthetic expression: Octo Roma embodies the quintessence of style. Bulgari is presenting three new references. The first flaunts its elegance devoid of any superfluous elements on a sunburst anthracite dial framed by a steel case. It is fitted with a black alligator leather strap secured by a steel pin buckle. The second heightens its presence by teaming the steel case with a matching articulated-link bracelet. The finishing details and the contrasts between the polished and satin-brushed elements instils luminous touches accentuated by its extremely luminous sunburst blue dial. The third version, unsurprisingly for a Maison with jewellery-making origins, showcases gold, reinforced by the black touch typical of Italian contemporary design. Octo Roma is also available with a steel case featuring a pink gold bezel and winding-crown, while the two-tone bracelet combines gold and steel.

Pleasing proportions and a high-performing calibre

The three new versions maintain the beautifully balanced proportions defined by Bulgari. The 58-facet case combining watchmaking’s typical round and square shapes is structurally complex yet aesthetically simple. The integrated lugs create a pleasingly taut overall design while contributing to the extremely pure overall aesthetic. The 41mm diameter is wide enough to make the dial with its applied hour-markers and openworked hands perfectly legible, while maintaining a distinct sense of moderation.

Watchmaking seduction naturally also encompasses a passion for mechanics.

Bulgari responds to this by treating its Octo Roma watch to a Manufacture mechanical self-winding movement, Calibre BVL 191 Solotempo. It has a 42-hour power reserve, notably ensured by the efficiency of its ceramic components and its frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Its refined finishing, drawing upon the finest Swiss skills such as chamfering and Côtes de Genève, is entirely in keeping with watchmaking traditions. Its generosity and the craftsmanship it embodies make Octo Roma an instinctive favourite: 100% Swiss as well as 100% Italian, it is 200% a watch of passion.

It is resolutely time for transparency. This philosophy of light has led Bulgari to explore a new dimension, expressed through the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire which exalts the quest for balance and beauty in this stunning black version in DLCcoated titanium contrasting with blue.

This watch offers a new interpretation of the formal purity of the octagon. This geometrical figure, conveying a wealth of cultural and spiritual symbolism, has been regarded as a source of perfection since time immemorial, through antiquity and the Renaissance. Following on from diverse formal variations on the Octo theme, it reinvents itself in this new case with its modern, urban proportions.

Bulgari makes no distinction between form and substance. The task of modelling shapes and seeking aesthetic balance is not gratuitous, but instead consistently intended to match functionality. The formal purity of this outstanding watch is now dedicated to a new horological vision: allowing light to pour in so as to magnify the beauty of the movement, imbued with an innovative, modernistic approach.

Through its dial and its transparent caseback, this spectacular 44mm-diameter timepiece crafted in titanium DLC-black coated (Diamond Like Carbon) offers connoisseurs a visual immersion into the system itself. The mechanical manualwinding flying tourbillon movement, Calibre BVL 206, is staged at the heart of the watch and features 11 DLC-coated bridges adorned with blue bars made of ITR2 – a unique composite material laden with carbon nanotube particles and endowed with metal-like hardness – and SLN, a high-tech luminescent material. The bridges are used as hour-markers, thereby serving both to support the movement and as functional elements in reading off the hours and minutes. The timesetting operations of the Octo Tourbillon Sapphire stem from a sophisticated development process. One press on the crown reveals a red dot in the micro-aperture at 3 o’clock, signalling that the time may be set simply by rotating the crown. Once the operation is complete, a further press causes the dot to vanish and locks the time-setting mechanism.

With Octo Tourbillon Sapphire, Bulgari continues to provide its eminently personal definition of horological excellence. A definition that is all about transparency.

EMERGIN G Contemporary ARTISTS

The following highlights a diverse group of emerging contemporary, male and female artists, of different descents and backgrounds, working in sculpture, painting, photography, video, and mixed media. Each of them had a standout last few years, during which they have established themselves as a tour de force of contemporary art, with surely much more to come in the future. All of them represent extraordinary talents of wondrous aesthetics and styles, with prospects of tremendous careers laying ahead of them. If you are an artist, art collector, curator or simply an art lover, you

should definitely keep your eyes open for these names as they are about to shake the art world in the upcoming years.

It’s not easy to be an emerging artist. There is a whole competitive world of contemporary art scene, and sometimes it’s not easy to figure out what is the best path toward success for an artist. Therefore, it’s quite useful to read some books and texts about the contemporary art market. Because, today, almost everything is about the art market. How to sell your artwork, how to make it visible?

The book Selling Contemporary Art: How

to Navigate the Evolving Market offers a number of answers. A sophisticated examination of today’s contemporary art market from an art dealer’s point of view, this book focuses on recent changes in the quickly evolving market. With an emphasis on how the market responded to the global recession that began in 2008, gallery owner Edward Winkleman moves from an examination of the factors beyond the individual dealer’s command to those that the dealer can control.

Take a look at how emerging artists can make a breakthrough on the international contemporary art platform!

CHRISTIAN ROSA

Christian Rosa (1982, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a Vienna based artist whose career has been on the steady rise since 2013. After obtaining a degree from the Akademie der bildended Künste in 2012, Christian Rosa had several important exhibitions of his work which gained him huge attention, including Frieze New York art fair, Venice Biennale and his Los Angeles gallery debut. Rosa’s paintings, executed in pencil, spraypaint and oil, follow the tradition of non-objective art, and express the artist’s subjective experiences. Relying on chance and ‘mistakes’, Rosa allows his instinctive physical actions to create an abstract painterly world on large canvases. What appear to be random sketches and calligraphic scrawling’s, with natural forms only suggested by simply drawn paths, result in highly meditative paintings of intriguing composition.

Julie Oppermann is a Berlin based artist from New York, who started the full-time artist career after her neuroscience studies at Berkley and completion of her MFA at Hunter College in New York. Oppermann’s mind-melting colourful paintings appear like optical illusions and demand an effort from the viewer to establish comprehension. Executed with calculated layering, full of pulsing

waves of colour and vector-like line patterns, these paintings usually hide beneath a soft focused halo of different colour which is revealed only if observed carefully. With her captivating artwork, created in acrylic and oil, Oppermann masterfully stretches the boundaries of visual perception, cleverly playing with optical flicker and sensation of movement.

This artistic elevation of blackness is most directly seen in his critically acclaimed series of photographic portraits, in which Awol Erizku reworked some of the most famous and iconic classic portraits of artists such as Caravaggio and Vermeer, in which Erizku replaced their subjects of white colour with modern black faces.

collage references, is so desired it is already fetching mind-boggling prices at auctions held by the most renowned auction houses worldwide. This was the reason Lucien Smith was featured on the 2012 list of thirty young notable individuals published by the Forbes magazine.

American painter Jeff Elrod (1966, Dallas) is widely known for his abstract paintings of large format which combine hand painted and digitally rendered elements. These hybrid images of flat colour planes and illusory depth, executed in acrylic, spray paint and computer programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, have a pronounced retinal effect Elrod gets by putting sharp geometric shapes out of focus. By employing this technique Jeff Elrod dissolves the images until new shapes emerge, and cleverly removes the focal point to obtain a hypnotic effect. With the lack of visual anchor Elrod’s amorphous paintings of lost objects and indistinct blotches of colour seem to resist coherence and bedazzle the audience.

Zak Prekop (1979) is an American artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He creates the so called non-paintings of barely discernible images that generate the illusion of light and depth. By employing grid structures and subtle fluctuations of colour Prekop’s seemingly casual artworks, often painted on transparent surfaces, are quite challenging and demand closer inspection to be fully comprehended as their shapes and marks interact with patterns and structures. Prekop’s colour palette is extremely scarce, often reduced to nothing more than white, black, and blue, and he usually avoids using brushstrokes of paint and constructs his all over abstractions with the use of palette knifes and stencils.

ZAK PREKOP

Visual poetry of minimal and abstract, deceptively simple paintings created by the renowned and extremely talented German painter David Ostrowski (1981, Cologne), is the result of the artist’s comprehensive and careful study of the true nature of painting. Ostrowski’s aesthetics of telling more with less, fueled by an obvious urge to distance himself from the tradition of technically

skilled art, investigates the concept of error in the process of creation. His most famous, highly controversial and critically acclaimed F series, which consists of what some may call ’empty’ and ‘unpainted’ works, featuring barely noticeable interventions on canvas, reveal a well thought-out and calculated artistic process and Ostrowski’s intention to boil things down to un-painterly essentials.

HOOSEN

Another emerging contemporary artist from Berlin, Germany is Christian Hans Albert Hoosen. Recognized for his strong expressionist imagery, rich in metaphors and symbolism, Hoosen creates comprehensive art which requires careful studying in order to be fully grasped. Hoosen’s multi-layered, wild and chaotic paintings of various sketches and wide array of associations are riddled with eccentric faces and strange, comic-like creatures. Very often left open for discussion, and through clever use of universal metaphors and delicate colour symbolism, they provide a mixed view at both artist’s intimate world and associations of shared experiences of everyday moments and recognisable human conditions.

MARCEL EICHNER

To wrap up this list of contemporary artists we take a look at Berlin based artist Marcel Eichner (1977, Siegburg) who has gained huge recognition for his haunting, mixed media paintings. His hard to categorise art, both enchanting and confusing at the same time, depicts a strange world where borders that separate real and surreal have been completely erased. With his unique

use of ink, acrylics and gouache, Marcel Eichner, graduate of Kunstackademie Düsseldorf, paints fragile characters, grotesque creatures and demons that find themselves in imaginative nightmarish scenes, so chaotic and intense, yet skilfully composed, perfectly balanced and controlled, very often spiced with a splash of humour.

HOW TO THE BEST HIGH-END

Choose Watches for Travel

I’m a frequent flier as well as someone who has become accustomed to wearing a nice watch wherever I go (and by “nice watch” and for the purposes of this article I’m talking about a mechanical timepiece with a starting

price of a few thousand dollars). While traveling, I like to take an assortment of watches with me to wear, and I need to make sure I choose practical watches that offer reliability, utility, and versatility. The watches also need to be kept safe.

Below I’ll discuss some of the basic considerations everyone traveling with nice watches should be aware of, and also offer some expert advice on what watches you might wish to choose for your particular journey.

TYPES OF WATCHES THAT TRAVEL WELL

When you delve into the world of timepieces you’ll quickly find that many available products are positioned as seemingly designed for travelers. Timepieces with second time zones, world timers, and complicated travel calendar systems are available for enthusiasts and collectors alike. But are these sophisticated pieces of horology what you want on your wrist while traveling the world in our modern times?

The simple answer is that the best watches to travel with tend to be the ones which are the least complicated. To understand the logic behind this it is important to consider that most mechanical travel watches have systems designed long before mobile phones and always-accurate clocks were ubiquitous. A pilot flying a plane 50 years ago may have very well benefitted from a wrist watch with two time zones indicated on it. These days that same pilot certainly wants to know the time (and look good) but he or she doesn’t need to rely on their timepiece outside of emergency situations.

Watches that travel well are those which are durable and won’t easily break. The last thing any watch collector needs is one of their precious mechanical watches breaking during transit to be dead weight that requires expensive servicing upon return. Another good reason to travel with relatively simple (mechanically speaking) watches is convenience. Perpetual calendar watches will track the date, month, and leap year when kept set. Let the power wind down and also change time zones, and you’ll find yourself spending several minutes resetting your timepiece when what you really need to do is leave your hotel room for that meeting.

“Simple watches” in the context of this article are those which feature the time (perhaps with the date), chronographs, GMTs (which have two time zones – one in 24 hour format), and some lightly more complicated watches that have annual calendars or more sophisticated multiple time zone features. If you need to baby a watch too much, or are worried about its being damaged during travel – simply don’t travel with it.

World time watches typically allow you to view your local time as well as what time it is in any of the 24 major time zones via reference cities. These are popular for travelers, but I’d only recommend them if you find a model that you’ll want to wear on a regular basis because you like how it looks. With modern technology you certainly don’t need a world timer for keeping appointments while abroad. A slightly more practical travel watch with multiple time zones is a GMT or dual time zone watch. Two time zones can be indicated in various methods (typically “home time” is indicated in 24 hour format), and is useful for those people who want to know what time it is where they currently are as well as the time back home. With that said, traveling with a “time only” watch is never a bad idea. If only because they are the easiest to reset when entering a new time zone.

HOW TO PACK WATCHES & KEEP THEM SAFE

We’ve all heard stories of theft during travel, and even the idea of losing something as precious as a timepiece can be disconcerting. Anytime you take a possession with you while traveling you technically run the risk of loss (criminal or otherwise) – so it is best to play it safe and smart. Prudence also suggests that you probably don’t want to travel with anything that strictly speaking you aren’t comfortable permanently parting with.

It goes without saying that watches you travel with should be durable enough to put up with vibration and shock. These watches won’t always be on your wrist, but even a timepiece on your wrist can come into contact with heavy luggage, tight plane corridors. Avoid complicated watches with overly delicate mechanisms as well as those produced from softer materials such as many precious metals which can be prone to scratch.

If you are like me and travel with more than one watch, you’ll need a safe carrying case for what isn’t currently on your wrist. There are no shortage of watch “travel cases” out there, but I find that most of them are actually larger than they need to be. More so, rather than investing in larger cases that fit multiple watches, consider using multiple single watch carrying cases since they tend to fit in to your luggage better. If you are really in a pinch then there is no harm in carrying a timepiece folded carefully into a sock.

Keeping your watches close to you is a good way to keep them safe. Most experienced “watch travelers” will tell you to keep your watches in carry-on bags as opposed to checking them under a plane. What about security from theft? In my experience the best way to protect a watch is to hide it in plain sight and never (ever) take it with you to a spa or similar destination. Unscrupulous service staff are the most common types of watch thieves and look for instances when people commonly take off their watches. Leave your watch on your wrist or in your room – but never leave them in lockers or off your wrist in other public areas.

CHOOSE WATCHES LIKE YOU WOULD SHOES

In the past when I’ve been asked “why do you need more than one watch?” I’ve simply responded with “could you get away with having one pair of shoes?” I’ve never actually heard anyone say “yes.” Having said that, you can’t bring all your shoes with you on vacation (at least most people can’t). The shoes, like the watches we choose to travel with should be as versatile as possible to make you look good in a variety of casual, formal, active, and leisure situations. I recommend carrying at least one “beater watch” with you which you don’t mind getting wet, dirty, or banged up a bit.

Metal watches on a matching bracelet are often very fashionably versatile – serving their owners well in a variety of clothing options and scenarios. On that note, the more conservatively styled a watch is (mild visual complexity, basic colors, etc…) the more likely it will look suitable in multiple situations. Do not however forget the expressive value watches have. If we don’t travel with watches because we strictly need them, then we are traveling with watches because we like to be seen with them. Despite wanting to travel safely and prudently, don’t forget that your fine timepiece should communicate something about you. People use high-end timepieces to suggest something about their status, success, taste, and personality. Being able to do that during a business meeting in a foreign city or while relaxing at a resort is often more important to people than doing the same thing back home. Watches that travel with you are an important extension of your personality, so choose them wisely.

ALL ABOUT the Girl

Milanese fine art photographer Micol Sabbadini has dipped into her visual archive to create a breezy, summer-centric capsule collection for Weekend Max Mara. Known for her striking images of exotic locales, Sabbadini has drawn on the sun-drenched imagery of the Aegean Islands for this collection. Photographs, taken in stolen moments during her travels, of white- washed houses, lazily drifting boats, intricate mosaics and luscious Mediterranean peonies are thoughtfully collaged or transformed into stunning patterns by the artist. Twelve Weekend Max Mara-designed pieces will receive this visual treatment from her photographic eye: dresses, trousers, shirts, skirts and accessories in shifting shades of white, blue and pink. “The mood of this collection,” Sabbadini describes of the inspiration behind the collaboration, “is European summer — coastal houses in Greece, sailboats in the sea and snatches of text I find wandering around with my camera on days off.”

The twelve pieces featured in the collection were designed with long, carefree days in mind. The images were designed specifically for the cut of three of these garments, treating each piece like one of Sabbadini’s artworks. A cotton poplin menswearstyle shirt is collaged with digitally printed sailboats bordered with peonies and mosaic patterns. A Silk Crêpe de Chine T-shirt, with Cotton Jersey sleeves and back, is printed with similar floral motifs and emblazoned with found text. A voluminous, 50s-inspired high waisted skirt in cotton poplin features whitewashed houses, glimpses of the sea and oversized peonies. Meanwhile, a similar pattern featuring a blue and white floral motif, sailboats and ‘LOVE’ boldly written in red adorns a full-length Crêpe de Chine t- shirt dress, kickflare Capri trousers in satin cotton stretch and a 50s-style shirt dress with a full, half-wheel skirt. Creamy silk foulard scarves and iconic Weekend Max Mara Pasticcino bags will also receive the all-over-print treatment from Sabbadini.

“I loved this project,” Sabbadini says about the collaboration with Weekend Max Mara, “using my photography archive in this way was greatly inspiring.” Between Sabbadini’s dreamy images and Weekend Max Mara’s chicly understated silhouettes and luxuriously rendered fabrics, the capsule collection’s Mediterranean vibe seems second nature to the newfound collaborators. But for Sabbadini, it was the opportunity to work in an entirely different medium that was most rewarding, “it was an amazing learning experience and super fun,” she reveals about the partnership, “I was given freedom to make something true to my aesthetic.”

AN ICON BORN TO EXPRESS UNCONVENTIONALITY

Bulgari breaks the rules of jewellery design once again with the new B.zero1 Labyrinth, a ring that is a declaration of the power of self-expression. Through the captivating curves of the spiral in rose and white gold, the ring expresses an innate ability to break free from conventions. Bringing an additional twist to this year’s creativity, the B.zero1 Design Legend line – the product of the combined talents of Bulgari and star architect Zaha Hadid – is enriched with revolutionary new designs.

Modelled on the Colosseum, Emperor Vespasian’s architectural statement of power, B.zero1 was designed to become an expression of strength and character which speaks the language of people who think big, from Imperial Rome to nowadays. With the bold vision of an emperor at its core, the compelling idea behind B.zero1’s unique design was to empower women through a jewel that was both unconventional and chic.

THE POWER OF DESIGN

When B.zero1 was created in 1999, it pushed the boundaries of shape and form, with a three-dimensional and almost architectural look instead of the usual thin band as its focal point. Featuring a broad central band encircled by two flat rings engraved with the Bulgari double-logo, this creation boasted an unprecedented new look. An innovative and iconic design which defies classification.

With its striking appearance, it is also a perfect piece that brings an element of distinction to daily life; B.zero1 breaks the rules of how jewellery can be worn. It looks perfect on every finger, or stacked one above the other, or on a chain or a bracelet. B.zero1 announces a penchant for unconventionality in the very personal and effortlessly individualistic way it is worn. A jewel for both men and women, as self-expression has no gender barriers.

B.ZERO1

Over the years, B.zero1 has displayed an infinite ability to reinvent itself, with countless interpretations and the use of unconventional materials, like never-ending performance art. In 2010 the renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor lent his vision to the iconic ring by applying a mirror-like surface to the finish of the B.Zero1. Combining the traditional tubogasinspired spiral with the gleaming and liquid curves typical of his work, Kapoor smoothly blended contemporary art with B.zero1’s bold identity. A new version of the B.Zero1 was recently launched, designed by architecture legend Zaha Hadid. Infusing Bulgari’s most celebrated icon with her design genius, Hadid added her signature curves to the wave-like shape of the ring, creating a feeling of movement reminiscent of her architectural masterpieces.

B.zero1 has not only charmed some of the great names of contemporary art, it has also taken inspiration from the worlds of art and design, constantly expressing itself with avant-garde shapes and truly innovative materials. From ceramic and coloured marble, to the combination of different types of gold into an ever changing spiral, B.zero1 amazes the world at every new appearance.

THE COLLECTION

A ring of self-expression

With an entrancing spiral, where rose gold blends into white gold in an optical play of fluid and unexpected

forms, the new B.zero1 labyrinth symbolically reflects the Bulgari way of life: reinvent the rules and dare to be who you are, in the most authentic way.

Tailoring this creativity to different jewels, the collection is enriched with four new additions: a bold four-band ring in white and rose gold - also available in an even more precious version with pavé diamonds - and two feisty pendants from which two slightly miniaturized rings hang. The appearance of the new B.zero1 changes according to how you look at it: rose gold from the top and white gold from the bottom - or the opposite - and an entrancing spiral of curves carved by the liquid flow of gold when you get to its core.

your finger, hovering rather than enclosing, tricking the eye and demanding a closer look at its impossible construction.

The labyrinth: a place to be yourself

In the shape of a legend

It took somebody of the architectural calibre of Zaha Hadid to successfully revisit the design and to push the boundaries of the ring's rebellious nature. Bringing fresh radiance to the B.zero1 Design Legend collection, this year the postmodern spiral is enriched with new dimensions of brilliance: two rings in white or rose gold with matching pendants are set with a pavé of diamonds in varying sizes, filling the curvilinear structure of the legendary design with a shimmering sparkle. The gemstones intensify the sense of movement, with their different sizes and undulating settings giving a sense of flow.

For this extraordinary collaboration Hadid deconstructed the original central band with intersecting spirals that resemble undulating gold waves, creating a new geometry that highlights the fluid tactile nature of the silhouette. Held within two flat rings engraved with the classic Bulgari double logo, the Design Legend is both free-flowing and linear, brilliantly presenting a uniquely dynamic appearance that gives the metal an organic feel. When worn, the ring seems to float on

It takes obstinacy, determination and the courage to follow one's own rules to run through a labyrinth, whether it is in one's imagination, in one's dreams or in real life. There is something very exciting about setting out on non-linear paths: it is a way to capture the beautiful in the unexpected, to experience one's own energy, to be open to life and discover new opportunities at every crossroads. As they say: it is the journey, not the destination, that matters.

For Bulgari a labyrinth is not a place in which one loses oneself but it is a place to find oneself. It is a journey of continuous experimentation, where instinct has a fundamental role and choice is the watchword: right or left, stop or go, new possibilities await behind every corner.

From art to cinema, to modern life symbols, labyrinths and women seem to build a perfect equation. The desire to live experiences – and to do so in their own way – is part of the vital energy of women, who are bold by nature and are able to do the impossible in their daily lives.

100 | UNIQUE
The new chapter in the signature collection also introduces two bracelets with an edgy pendant available in black or white ceramic, and hoop earrings intertwined with the iconic spiral in rose gold.

The labyrinth is the direct expression of the powerful insight that is expressed in Bulgari’s B.zero1 creations: all rules can be challenged, changed or reinvented. It might seem a paradox that in a construct that proposes a single solution with only one correct route from the outside to the centre, every person actually finds their own individual way.

A metaphor for life, this inspiring symbol encourages women to choose their own path and abandon predefined routes, with a mind that is open to everything and an ability to constantly reinvent the rules.

She rvles, by reinventing the rvles. Charismatic and powerfully beautiful just like her favourite ring, Bella Hadid defines herself through her natural unconventionality. Determined yet shy, Bella faces her life under the spotlight with great determination and a touch of charming ingenuity: a model, an athlete and famous since birth, she willingly embraces change, accepting her life as herself with all her contradictions in the name of authenticity.

Strong, fierce and independent like a modern-day Amazon, Bella runs through her adventurous life as if she were on the catwalk - with feline instinctive force and innate energy. She has the ability to capture the camera lens with a single look, yet behind that serious and slightly sullen look, there is a passionate love for life and the natural brightness of a Californian girl. An incurable optimist, she knows how to make good things happen.

Reinventing the rules in everything she does, Bella believes in an individualism which is synonymous with following one's own path. She doesn’t care about being rebellious, she wants to live her own way. Wearing B.zero1 for Bulgari, Bella believes like the Roman jeweller that jewellery can inspire women to make their own rules: “B.zero1 represents my powerful side, the one that proclaims difference in the face of conformity.”

In her world of sharing, a piece of art, a dress, a jewel, or an object are the most exciting ways to express her true colours: “I think design says a lot about how we live, who we are and what we find beautiful. The world today is fluid: a painting becomes a bag, a dish inspires a dress, an architectural masterpiece is crafted into a ring… To me design is one of the arts that best catches this flowing energy.” For Bella design always has its own story and the innate power to be captured in the most personal way.

DOUBLE FIRST

The first Royal Oak Concept models for women since the birth of the collection in 2002 – and the first Audemars Piguet flying tourbillon. Haute Horlogerie is in union with Haute Joaillerie in these two generously dimensioned 38.5mm wristwatches available in 18-carat white gold, either set with brilliantcut diamonds or baguette-cut diamonds. With the added fascination of a dynamic complication that appears to float…

Satin-finished bridges, polished angles and white lacquered decorations are visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, and on the dial, there’s a glimpse of the openworked barrel at 11 o’clock, a snowflake amid diamond-set icicles.

Distinctive aesthetic: the white gold dial features faceted stone set “icicles” and white lacquered decorations, reminiscent of winter in the Vallée de Joux.

Big, bold and intensely feminine: the original character of the Royal Oak Concept adapts beautifully to a woman’s wrist.

Beautiful gemsetting: includes 397 brilliant-cut diamonds (~3.49 carats) for the case and buckle, 62 brilliant-cut diamonds (~0.16 carat) for the dial.

The baguette-cut diamond version boasts invisible setting.

THE LOEWE SPRING SUMMER 2018 WOMEN’S COLLECTION

The LOEWE Spring Summer 2018 Women’s collection is presented in a suite of white oval-shaped spaces, a reductionist backdrop against which especially commissioned, large-scale tapestries and miniature ceramic sculptures by artist Mo Jupp provide a specific cultural context and guide the eye through a precise interplay of scale and sinuous line. A perfect union of craft, art and technology, the impressive tapestries feature vivid images from LOEWE’s forthcoming campaign —shot by Steven Meisel— as well as black-andwhite 19th and 20th century photographs, all carefully transposed —by means of advanced software— into thousands of threads before being woven into giant

textiles by experts near Limoges, France. An interpretation of femininity informs a highly textured collection of classic garments that have been innovatively reconfigured. The character is a worldly and craft-savvy traveller, whose utilitarian side is offset by a softness evident in pastel panels, gingham prints and paisleys. Recurring asymmetry, cutouts and form-accentuating elements sharpen a fluid silhouette, while hand embellishments add dimension and showcase a range of special artisanal techniques. Anagrams and rich, varied workmanship give straightforward items the stamp of the house, as do layering, draping, and, in one case, a diamond patchwork of leather, lace

and embroidery. Everyday fabrics are employed in extraordinary ways; jerseys are present and simulated, replicating the ease of a T-shirt in pieces that ingeniously elevate their casual inspiration. Crushed and crinkled surfaces lend a sense of depth, while padding enhances proportion and thought-out details help create movement; a fringed Spanish shawl becomes an abstract dress. The show also introduces two new shapes to join LOEWE’s iconic bags: The Gate, a modern take on a classic saddle carrier featuring a distinctive knot belt and brass hinge, in 2 sizes, and the unlined, reversible Tent bag, seen here in two signature house colours: Oro and caramel.

TALENTED ARTIST ALEX, 27, IS HOSTING HIS SHOWCASE IN LONDON. HE SOLD HIS FIRST PAINTING AGED 16 WHILE STILL AT SCHOOL FOR £950 - IT JUST RE-SOLD FOR £35,000

112 | UNIQUE

A young British painter whose work has been compared to the great international pop artists Warhol and Lichtenstein, and who is fast becoming a favourite among British celebrity art collectors, is to be exhibited for the first time by a leading London gallery.

Alex Hall, 27, is now regarded as one of Britain’s most promising home-grown and talented emerging contemporary pop artists. His collection, or brand, ‘Haut de Gamme’, (translated from the French: “Top of the range”), is a celebration of colour, form and technique and depicts racing cars, wild safari animals and his signature image, magnum bottles of champagne.

Following in the mold of Warhol’s focus in the 1960s on every-day objects from consumer society such as Campbell’s soup cans, Hall’s chosen themes, 60 years on, of hedonism and excess run throughout his Haut de Gamme series, as his works reflect modern society’s attraction to some of the trappings from life in the fast lane in 2018.

One of London’s most popular art establishments, Box Galleries on the King’s Road, Chelsea, is staging its premiere of Haut de Gamme’s new series next week (Thursday, March 22) and some of Hall’s rich and famous admirers and collectors will attend.

In marked contrast to Haut de Gamme’s energetic, apparently extrovert style, showing canvases splashed with wild and explosive bursts of rich colour and splattered paint specs, Hall himself is an artist who treasures his privacy and lives quietly above his studio in a secluded west London mews.

Struck by Hall’s talent and originality, widely respected ‘gallerista’ Emma Moir, Founder of Box Galleries and an artist herself, recently became his agent and signed up the artist whose growing popularity, especially among celebrity collectors and investors, also impressed her.

Among famous names now collecting Haut de Gamme’s works are the well-known British entrepreneur and television business guru Peter Jones, a pundit on BBC TV’s Dragons’ Den. Famed for his keen eye when seeking out a wise investment on the long-running series, he has, to date,

bought no fewer than 27 of Hall’s paintings, and has decorated his home, Buckinghamshire office and 15 of his boardrooms with Hall’s iconic works.

Jones privately approached Alex, who has never appeared on the programme, and offered him an initial commission of one painting, which led to Jones acquiring many more. He has

also become Alex’s unofficial mentor and biggest Haut de Gamme fan.

Other well-known names who have now followed in the Dragon’s footsteps, with celebrity collectors of Haut de Gamme art including actress and TV presenter Denise Van Outen and former Liverpool and England footballer Steven Gerrard. Millionaire property

developer Bruce Ritchie, owner of Annabel’s nightclub Richard Caring, champion English National Hunt jockey Richard Johnson, Formula 1 racing driver Brandon Hartley and ‘Made In Chelsea’ cast members Millie Mackintosh, Binky Felstead and Rosie Fortescue have also recently bought his work.

Box Galleries Founder Emma Moir, (now available for interview), praised Hall’s artistic talent and said international art dealers and collectors are now actively on the hunt for fresh pop art talent.

“Alex Hall is now one of Britain's top contemporary emerging pop artists. He has incredible talent and is one to watch. He’s a rising star. The contemporary pop art market is booming right now in London, New York and Los Angeles. There has been a significant surge in investment.

“We know there are guaranteed secondary market sales of works by Warhol and Lichtenstein. But buyers today are also looking for new pop artists, not just those who have reached the top of the market - artists just like Alex Hall who are following in the tradition of those great Titans of the Pop movement.

“Alex Hall is part of a new generation of artists that are breaking the mold and doing things differently. His work is highly collectable and his rise in the art market will be reflected in the next few years through museums and auction houses. When I saw Alex Hall’s vibrant and uplifting paintings, I was immediately blown away.”

Alex Hall, whose great grandfather was a fellow student and associate of 18th century artist JMW Turner, who came to be regarded as the greatest of all English landscape painters, said: “I started selling work in 2006 and sold my first painting when I was 16 and still at school. It was a painting of Princess Diana and a Swedish collector wanted to buy it. I thought it was a joke to tell him the price I wanted was £950 but he bought it. I’m told it recently sold for £35,000, which came as a shock. I am very excited to be given this opportunity to exhibit my new work in a one-man show at Box Galleries in London.”

BeauRivage Geneva

Beau-Rivage is an exceptional and elegant property with a glittering history and unmatched location, with views across Lake Geneva and its iconic Jet d’Eau, to the towering Mont-Blanc and snowy Alps beyond the city. The destination of choice for an ever-growing list of extraordinary personalities, your stay at Beau-Rivage is sure to be unique.

BEAU-RIVAGE GENEVA

The atmosphere at Beau-Rivage is both cosmopolitan and intimate. And guests are pleasantly surprised to find that their host awaits their arrival—this is not an illusion, but rather shows the Mayer family’s passion for treating its guests as friends. Elegance here is innate; as in any private home, this feeling is reinforced by a warm spirit and complete discretion. The knowledge of what is special and an eye for detail have been developed to the point of becoming a part of daily life. Because, for those who insist on having the best when they travel, the real privilege is to feel an incomparable well-being.

Beau-Rivage was created in 1865 by Jean-Jacques Mayer, and has remained in the hands of the same family for five generations. It is one of the rare hotels in Switzerland that is still run by the founder’s direct descendants. Jacques Mayer and Catherine Nickbarte-Mayer, who own the hotel today, have reason to be proud of this family legacy. Alexandre Nickbarte-Mayer, son of Catherine Nickbarte-Mayer, joined the company in September 2010 as Director of development and was named General Manager in 2016. He represents the fifth generation of the offspring of the Mayer family. They

have remained true to the same Beau-Rivage spirit, shaped by exceptional staff at the service of illustrious visitors and historic personalities which contributed over time to the global fame of the five stars.

In 2015, Beau-Rivage celebrated its 150th anniversary. Proud of its values, expertise and social aptitude, the establishment continues its vocation towards the singularity, asserting its identity and its difference, cultivating passionately human relationships and the sense of hospitality.

Beau-Rivage reinvents itself every generation, retaining the best of each era while remaining faithful to its spirit and its soul throughout the centuries. Enlivening the present with unique artifacts from the past, the Beau-Rivage has always had a unique place in hospitality in Geneva. Decorative arts are the heart of its inner wealth. Visitors with a discerning eye will stop to appreciate the beauty of the playful cherubim or well-preserved fireplaces.

Impressive historic stained glass, made by Enneveux & Bonnet in the early 20th century and carefully stored in the attics, has been restored and placed in the floors of the hotel, highlighted by lavish corridors that serve as its backdrop. For more than 150 years, the family collected and restored rare and exceptional furniture pieces thanks to the talents of the best craftsmen. Walls are covered in the most precious fabrics, while the more intimate private spaces, such as the Salon Masaryk, are fully dressed in rare lemon tree woodwork and original stained glass windows.

In recent years, the hotel has undertaken major renovation programmes to meet the criteria of Swiss hospitality. It started with the development of new private terraces in continuation of the suites that accompany them, the highlighting of the Atrium, the complete renovation of the Executive and Deluxe rooms as well as the historic suites. The suite “Sissi” was the private suite of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary. Containing souvenirs and objects which belonged to the Empress, the room is decorated with its original antique furniture and features a panoramic view of the lake, the Ludwig II of Bavaria suite, a tribute to the architectural and artistic legacy of the Bavarian “Swan King” – a devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner, whose historic suite is also found at Beau-Rivage. The Wagner Suite mirrors the creative emotions of Richard Wagner’s music, which includes some of the finest operas of the 19th century, is decorated with

antique furniture that blends harmoniously with the natural surroundings and breath taking views beyond the windows. Finally, the Maharaja of Patiala Suite and Damerong of Siam Suite ooze their historical leaders’ noble grandeur.

In the following years, a new phase was also initiated on the upper floors with the creation of Duplex which reinvent the luxury of tomorrow by adding soul to it. An ambitious bet for a project that is the result of combined synergies of two generations, those of Jacques Mayer and of Alexandre Nickbarte-Mayer. Between 2014 and 2017, 28 units have been completely renovated, the back of the building, the restaurant, the kitchens, the terrace, the elevators, the roof is completely redone to the point that it could have the Minergie label, the system of air conditioning is in geothermal sync with the water of the lake.

The renovated include 6 duplex apartments ranging from 100 to 150 m2 and suites up to 500 m2. All with a private spa bathed in daylight, exceptional views, unique volumes and an extremely comfortable bed from which you can admire the stars if you wish.

Each room of the hotel has its own particularity. Beautiful furniture, a period lamp, a rare trinket, each object is unique and transforms a simple night into a privileged experience. Equipped with the latest technology, the rooms offer the very best in the art of living. In order to bring all of these elements together in harmony, Beau-Rivage worked with Leila Corbett Elwes as well as with Pierre-Yves Rochon, two international famous interior designer and architect.

At Beau-Rivage, each step is a discovery, every look turns a page of history. The rooms are the largest for their category and all the Deluxe, Prestige and Suites are different. Every room, every piece of furniture has a story to tell. We pay a great attention to detail, from the fabrics to the objects… at Beau-Rivage you feel good. It’s like coming home.
