“‘The Aerie’ does quiet, understated ultra-luxury arguably better than any other premier home in the Caribbean,” says Chris Smith, managing broker at Coldwell Banker British Virgin Islands, making note of the details in the design, such as the way the home captures cooling tradewinds. “The home is magical in its simplicity.” Blatant displays of wealth and grandeur are not necessary when there are 270-degree ocean, island, and sunset views to draw the eye.

In 2007, Moskito Island was purchased by Sir Richard Branson. He worked alongside the late Dr. Ken Kao, an architect and professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, on plans for an island community of like-minded colleagues and visionaries. Smith explains, “All of the homeowners on Moskito Island could have purchased and built a home on their own, individual private islands. Forsaking its dusty, rugged heritage, Denver has evolved into a world-class metropolis that embraces its role as the cosmopolitan capital of the Rocky Mountains.

Denver’s humble Wild West origins were eclipsed by an energy boom in the 1970s, and a more diverse economy has fueled recent growth. The high quality of life that appeals to incoming families and Fortune 500 corporations also makes the city an exceptional tourist destination. Luxury hotels, Michelin-starred dining, major league sports, and a vibrant cultural scene enhance friendly, easy-to-navigate Denver.

CITY OF CONTRASTS

Denver-based travel journalist Irene Middleman Thomas — her writing credits include The Denver Post, Colorado Life, and Sunset — reports, “Visitors appreciate Denver’s large number of sunny days, and even in winter temperatures can reach into the high 60s, even 70s.” Suggesting the city has largely shed its Western character, Thomas observes, “Overall, you’re more likely to see the latest fashion trends than cowboy hats, but there are still vestiges of that heritage.” The writer cites Rockmount Ranch Wear, a historic downtown Western apparel store, as a prime example.

A city of delightful contrasts, Denver is a dazzling 21st-century metropolis with an incredibly diverse population juxtaposed with occasional reminders of its rustic roots. The Denver Performing Arts Complex presents a full calendar of classical music and stage performances, while sports fans fill major league venues. In Denver,

you can attend the opera one night, a Broncos game the next, and feast on beef bourguignon or rattlesnake. Thomas suggests a worthy addition to a Denver itinerary is neighboring Boulder, commenting, “It’s got a vibrant pedestrian mall, views of the Flatirons [mountains] and a fun, eclectic mix of people.” With its inviting bistros, boutiques and University of Colorado campus, the community combines an outdoor-oriented lifestyle with a sophisticated attitude.

The Brown Palace — the storied hotel’s sandstone and red granite façade hides a spectacular lobby — has been hosting presidents, royalty, and other VIPs since 1892, when Denver was a very different place. Crawford overlooks the grand lobby of landmark Union Station, while the ART (located amidst a cluster of museums) overflows with paintings and sculptures from acclaimed artists such as Edward Ruscha and Larry Bell. The Maven draws a trendy clientele to historic Dairy Block, re-energized with fashion-forward boutiques, cozy cafés and even a Michelin-starred eatery. While the Hotel Boulderado, a 1909 landmark, remains a bastion of luxury in Boulder.

STAR-STUDDED CUISINE

Once predominantly a steak-and-potatoes affair, the dining scene in Denver has become more refined and eclectic, showcasing artisanal local ingredients and international influences. Landmarks like the Buckhorn Exchange, where local game dominates both décor and cuisine, preserve the city’s Western heritage, but high-end sushi bars and sleek contemporary steakhouses have also arrived. Reflecting the city’s diversity, dim sum, falafel, and pho are as easy to find as burgers and burritos. Linda Hampsten Fox, innovative chef/owner of The Bindery in Denver’s trending Highland neighborhood, reports, “Not only do we have authentic Ethiopian and Vietnamese restaurants, but we have chefs playfully using traditional ingredients and reinventing those dishes into new experiences.” She adds, “I love seeing the depth and diversity that’s happening here in the Mile High City.”

The Brown Palace is exceptionally well-positioned to meet the emerging hospitality industry trend of focusing on unione-of-a-kind que experiences, as opposed to simply providing amenities. “Unlike some other luxury properties, our distinctive architecture, sense of place, and the stories told all contribute to a unique experience at The Brown Palace,” says Smith.

Although the hotel has kept pace with Denver’s emergence as a world-class destination, Jana Smith advises, “If you’re looking for all the latest bells and whistles, you’re probably at the wrong hotel.” The Brown Palace’s celebration during the National Western Stock Show and its hosting of the Debutante Ball reflects the hotel’s pride in honoring local traditions. “Like Denver itself, The Brown Palace remembers where it came from and knows where it’s going,” says Smith.

Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton have joined The Brown Palace in the Denver luxury market, and a plethora of boutique hotels appeal to eclectic tastes. The

Reinforcing the gravitas of Denver dining was the inaugural edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide, published last year. Four restaurants in metro Denver earned coveted stars, and more than 30 others are recognized in the book revered by serious diners. Reflecting the city’s environmental consciousness, four local restaurants were awarded Michelin’s green sustainability stars. “Gastronomically, I think Denver has evolved more in the past 10 years than it did in the previous 100 years,” says Bobby Stuckey, master sommelier and partner at Frasca Hospitality Group, owners of Michelin-starred Frasca in Boulder and two restaurants in Denver.

Exceptional dining is only part of the equation in Denver after dark. For lively entertainment, the South of Colfax Nightlife District (SoCo) features everything from chic, intimate lounges to cavernous, ear-piercing nightclubs. The Church, a dance club named for its original capacity, features 150-year-old

SHOPPING SPREE

Despite its Western roots, Denver’s sense of style has evolved with the growth of the city. Local stylist and image consultant Rachel Dee, a longtime resident, reports that the level of sophistication in local fashion has rapidly accelerated in recent years. “Denver was such a quiet place — some people even referred to it as a ‘cow town’ — but now it’s exploding and is the happening place in the West,” reports Dee, founder of Rachel Dee Style.

“Western wear has never left us here,” says the local fashion professional, who suggests it inspires some contemporary designers, but notes that European luxury brands have also discovered Denver. Cherry Creek Shopping Center is home to iconic designer boutiques Hermès, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, and Dee recommends neighboring Cherry Creek North as a rewarding destination

ELEVATED ARTS

Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory is sheltered by a sculptural piece of modern architecture that doubles as a greenhouse, showcasing tropical flora at Denver Botanic Gardens even when the dome of the Colorado State Capitol is dusted in snow. Designed by Victor Hornbein and Edward White, Jr., the progressive design reflects the city’s creative spirit. Mid-century master Philip Johnson left his imprint on the city’s skyline, while an intriguing hotel tower by contemporary celebrity architect Jeanne Gang is under construction. Also taking shape is a residential high-rise with a tree-filled canyon traversing the façade, from avant-garde Chinese firm MAD.

The Denver Art Museum’s 1971 North Building was designed by Gio Ponti, and a striking 2006 addition was conceived by another world-class architect, Daniel Libeskind. Travel writer Thomas suggests visitors should not limit themselves to just the marquee attractions for artistic and cultural fulfillment. “There are some undiscovered, unheralded museums, such as the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center,” she says. The journalist also encourages a visit to Denver’s River North Art District (RiNo). Alye Sharp, RiNo’s executive director of programs and partnerships, reports the city’s arts scene transcends the galleries of generously endowed institutions. “In Denver, there’s hardly any place you can go where you don’t feel the energy of local artists and their work,” she explains, but in muralclad RiNo, art truly takes center stage. Restaurants, microbreweries, chic boutiques, and trendy residential developments followed the creative community into the former industrial neighborhood, but Sharp cautions, “The ethos of the district is to recognize that the artists arrived first and to keep them in the forefront.” She recommends the lively district’s First Friday events as an ideal introduction to RiNo.

Whether their tastes lean toward the rustic or refined, visitors to this soaring Rocky Mountain metropolis will have no problems indulging their passions.

An escape to the Caribbean or South Pacific is always dreamworthy, but the ultimate tropical fantasy involves being immersed in luxury and natural beauty on a private island. It is a mistake to think that only billionaires have access to such retreats, as intimate resorts and private residences await those with the spirit of romance and adventure.

Malagasy Magic

From Time + Tide, a family-owned, environmentally conscious specialist in luxury safari and exotic island tourism, is Miavana, an idyllic retreat off the coast of Madagascar. Occupying the diminutive island of Nosy Ankao, Miavana provides 14 luxury beachfront villas with modern architecture that’s softened by hand-dyed textiles, Malagasy wood and local stone. These low-impact villas seamlessly coexist with the pristine natural environment. “Miavana is on par with, if not better than, any luxury private island environment in the world,” contends Bruce Simpson, CEO of Time + Tide Africa, due in large part to a destination as singularly beautiful and unique as Madagascar. Assessing Miavana’s guests, who are demographically diverse, Simpson reports, “We see them as a combination of well-traveled individuals anxious to see something new or different, and newer travelers looking for exciting, unique products or destinations.”

Confirming their adventurous spirit, Simpson reveals a large proportion of those guests elect to explore off-island attractions, immersing themselves in Madagascar’s beguiling culture, wildlife and geography. Explaining the increasing popularity of this kind of vacationing, Simpson states, “I feel that private islands are developing out of a need for more exclusive and remote environments away from larger hotels and over-commercialized offerings.” For a quintessential private island experience, this resort offers the opportunity to book all 14 villas for an ultra-extravagant holiday.

Presidential Escapes

The Florida Keys have long captured the hearts of travelers who appreciate solitude, natural beauty and a splash of eccentricity, just a leisurely excursion from bustling Miami. Occupying a four-acre islet in the Keys is an intimate hideaway named Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, whose remote location has not kept presidents or movie stars from discovering its charm.

John Allan, Little Palm Island’s general manager, states, “Beyond exclusivity and privacy, the foremost aspiration of our guests lies in the art of disconnecting.” In fact, cell phone use in public spaces is discouraged and distractions like televisions, telephones or alarm clocks are absent from suites. “In a world where technology and the news cycle permeate daily lives, retreating to a private island resort is a way for guests to completely unplug and cherish shared moments,” he explains.

“Our guests can create their own experiences without ever running into a crowd,” says the general manager, who notes that no more than 60 guests are ever present at one time. There is, however, an abundance of non-human activity, including endangered Key deer and exotic birds, in addition to extraordinary sea life. “Our guests look for an authentic, luxury experience in all aspects of their visit,” says Allan, and suggests the resort’s partnerships with local environmental organizations appeal to their philanthropic sensibilities.

HMS Bounty

Situated on the remote French Polynesian atoll of Tetiaroa is The Brando, named for Marlon Brando, who discovered Tetiaroa when scouting locations for the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty.”

The island still represents the epitome of escapism, an experience enhanced by five-star luxury. The actor, who commented, “Tetiaroa is beautiful beyond my capacity to describe,” built a home for himself there, a serene refuge from chaotic Hollywood. With the resort’s commitment to environmental and cultural stewardship, Tetiaroa is as pristine as when Brando first laid eyes on the island. Conscientiously integrated with the delicate tropical environment are 35 beachfront villas and a secluded residence. The cuisine is crafted by a chef whose résumé includes Paris’ renowned Hôtel Plaza Athénée and the storied Orient Express.

Deep Dive

Discovered by travelers seeking to combine luxury with adventure, the Seychelles — an unspoiled Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa — offers some of the most gorgeous resorts on the planet. Four Seasons operates two properties in the Seychelles, but their intimate resort on Desroches Island is a genuine expression of exclusivity. Desroches features a white sugar-sand beach and the island is revered by divers because of its coral composition and access

to deep waters filled with mesmerizing species. A terraced, sculptural lighthouse with panoramic ocean views serves as one of the resort’s restaurants, offering the likes of lobster thermidor, Kobe beef and pistachio-crusted black cod with beurre blanc. “Being in the Seychelles with my family is beautiful, helping us appreciate the wonders of nature and those values are reflected in our restaurants and dining experiences,” reports senior executive chef Carlos Rodriguez. Service and amenities are at a level one expects from Four Seasons, but with a casual, approachable attitude. The height of pampered privacy at this resort is a sprawling villa with 100,000-plus square feet of indooroutdoor living space.

Villas Online

Those looking for an island experience with maximum privacy turn to short-term rental platforms that maintain listings for private islands around the globe. “Vrbo exclusively offers private vacation rentals, ensuring guests never have to share space with hosts, and entire islands take that privacy to the next level,” explains Vrbo travel expert Melanie Fish. Hummingbird Cay in the Bahamas, featuring versatile accommodations and a 2,500foot white-sand beach, is one of the private islands listed by Vrbo. Another is Kanu, a tiny private island in Belize — its own coral reef is a major draw for divers — whose five villas can

sleep 20. But Vrbo’s Fish notes this kind of privileged experience can be found closer to home. “Travelers may be surprised to find out that there are private islands available in destinations like Maine, Minnesota and Florida,” she says. Reporting that booking decisions in the private vacation rental marketplace often hinge on amenities, Fish explains, “Private islands tend to dial those offerings up by providing a private chef or water taxi along with the peace and seclusion.”

Currently offered by My Private Villas, a London-based firm specializing in private island rentals, are Cousine Island (with four villas and a helipad) in the Seychelles, or Calala Island off the coast of Nicaragua whose five beachfront suites are supported by a staff of 25. A hybrid between hotel accommodations and independent estate living is a splendid villa on a petite island in the Maldives, offering 24/7 butler service and privileges at Cheval Blanc Randheli, an ultra-high-end resort. Chris Krolow, founder and CEO of Private Islands, Inc., has become a minor celebrity due to the HGTV show Island Hunters, featuring many of his company’s alluring properties. While the Caribbean, Mediterranean and South Pacific are naturally popular, Private Islands, Inc. also offers opportunities in less exotic domestic locations. Krolow’s television appearances simply reinforce the desire of travelers to make the ultimate escape — to their own private paradise.

The most iconic structure in the city is La Seu, a towering cathedral whose spires have become a hallmark over the centuries. One of Europe’s best examples of Gothic architecture, La Seu is built on the site of a former mosque, which was once a Roman temple. Adjacent to the cathedral lies a 13th-century palace and splendid gardens, L’Almudaina. From a hilltop location just west of Palma, Bellver Castle — a unique 14th-century round castle — one can enjoy some of the best views in the city. Palaces are not a rarity here. Many, such as Palacio Can Marqués in Old Town, have been refashioned as hotels. PALM BEACH REVIVAL

The Oetker Collection — the elite brand’s portfolio includes legendary five-star properties Le Bristol Paris and The Lanesborough in London — is scheduled to open The Vineta Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida later this year. “This is a monumental moment in the brand’s history as we announce our first Masterpiece Hotel in the United States,” explains Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection. One of the most anticipated 2024 openings, the Waldorf Astoria New York represents both old and new. This romanticized Art Deco landmark — when it originally opened in 1931 it was the largest and tallest hotel in the world — is part of New York’s cultural fabric. Cruise ships are far more than a means of transportation. Increasing in popularity are ships that have been crafted for a smaller number of guests. These vessels were not designed to appeal to the masses, but rather to encourage more authentic travel.

Recognizable names, such as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Windstar Cruises, are redefining luxury cruises with fewer crowds, indisputable comforts, easy adventures, and impeccable dining options. Travelers can expect vessels that are able to navigate rivers and lakes and offer direct ocean access.

A FLEET TO REMEMBER

On opulent ships such as the Evrima boasting the trusted RitzCarlton name guests are offered the thrill of travel all with peace of mind and ease. Why separately book a safari or a private villa, rent a yacht, or battle large crowds and long wait times when you can comfortably customize your experience in one place against a backdrop of jaw-dropping views?

By 2025, the Ritz-Carlton fleet will boast three impressive ships that have been designed to accommodate the most discerning traveler, while hosting less than 500 passengers. This will ensure a relaxed, personal experience. Evrima, the most

compact ship – small but mighty – has a 298-guest capacity, while the Ilma is slated to sail in September 2024 and Luminara is set to make its debut in July 2025.

AmaWaterways, another cruise company, specializes in river trips and boasts over 25 ships in its fleet. Even with a larger fleet, smaller ships are offered, such as the Zambezi Queen — a ship specifically designed for wildlife viewing — that accommodates just 28 guests. With sustainable technology and small groups, travelers can enjoy a trip to Africa while leaving little trace behind.

The AmaDahlia is a 72-passenger ship that sails the Nile River. On board
