construction has begun on a multi-million pound project at the University of Nottingham which hopes to improve the student learning experience.

The £50 million investment to create fo u r environmentallyfriendly buildings will see a £20m chemistry centre being constructed along with a £9m building at the Sutton Bonington Campus and a £19m library at the University Park.

The unique

Centre of Excellence fo r Chemistry planned fo r the Jubilee campus will be carbon neutral and will provide a place fo r students to carry out research using the latest technologies.

As part of the funding a new amenities building will be constructed at Sutton Bonington and will house a 500 seat dining hall, common rooms, and a staff lounge.

he wait is almost o v e r, t h e b r a n d n e w N o t t i n g h a m Tr e n t S t u d e n t Union is about to welcome you into its stunning and c u t t i n g e d g e i n t e r i o r. A new era has begun thanks to the innovative nature of this build; Nottingham Tr e n t i s p r o u d t o n o w b e a b l e t o p r o v i d e a c e n t r e fo r the student community that has been entirely designed using students’ visions and that promises to deliver first class facilities.

The project began in the summer of 2011 with the aim to be completed by the start of term in 2013. The much anticipated outcome of this build is that NTSU will become one of the most im-

p r e s s i v e u n i o n s fo r s t u d e n t s i n t h e e n t i r e c o u n t r y.

The size of this building is not to be underestimated.

Fe a t u r e d w i t h i n t h e s t r i ki n g e x t e r i o r i s 5 ,5 0 0 m e t r e s of space dedicated entirely to social and leisure use.

If this is not impressive enough the building also fe a t u r e s a c c o m m o d a t i o n fo r 9 0 0 s t u d e n t s . To p u t t h e s o cial aspect into a little more context, this brand new students’ union will include a sports hall, fitness studio and a health studio, as well as a shop, bars and a climbing wall teetering to just s h o r t o f 3 0 fe e t .

It seems that Nottingham Tr e n t w a s i n t e n t o n e x t r a c t i n g a s m u c h i n fo r m a t i o n a s possible from its students as

Also benefitting from the investment will be the University s p o r t s f i e l d a t G r o v e Fa r m w h i c h has been awarded £5 million to build two new pavilions and improve changing room facilities.

The work which is expected to be completed in 2015 will be the latest in a series of investments totalling £260 million over the p a s t f i v e y e a r s w h i c h h a v e fo c u s e d o n i m p r o v i n g t h e u n i v e r s i t y ’s buildings.

The University hopes that this next phase of development will continue to improve standards of teaching and learning in the 21st c e n t u r y.

The Hidden Gems of Nottingham

Nottingham has some great local restaurants; two of my personal favourites are Pe t i t Paris, a Fr e n c h R e s t a u r a n t o n K i n g ’s Wa l k , and 4550 Miles to Delhi, an award-winning Indian Restaurant on Maid Marion Wa y. I f y o u ’r e h u n g r y a n d have some spare cash, check them out.

A short bus ride from t h e c i t y c e n t r e i s Wo l l a t o n Hall. Housing a natural history collection and an industrial museum, w h i c h a r e n’t f a s c i n a t i n g i n t h e m s e l v e s , Wo l l a t o n H a l l i s w o r t h a l o o k fo r its grounds and because i t fe a t u r e d i n T h e D a r k K n i g h t R i s e s a s Wa y n e Manor… Pretty impressive i f y o u a s k m e . P l u s , i t ’s free!

Speaking of films, the Broadway Cinema is the b e s t p l a c e fo r f i l m l o v e r s i n Nottingham. The Guardian named it as one of the top ten UK cinemas. It is cheaper than the chains, has an excellent bar and c a fé a n d s h o w s a w i d e range of mainstream and independent films. The Broadway also runs courses approved by the British F i l m I n d u s t r y.

Whilst visiting The B r o a d w a y, t a ke a s t r o l l around Hockley and the L a c e M a r ke t w h e r e t h e r e a r e s o m e e xc e l l e n t i n d e p e n d e n t shops, bars, and clubs. As a n a d d e d b o n u s t h e a r e a’s architecture is particularly i m p r e s s i v e … E v e n i f y o u ’r e not usually that interested, i t ’s w o r t h a l o o k .

a t O c e a n n i g h t c l u b . Yo u might have heard rumours about this place but let me put you straight, those rumours are 100% true.

F i r s t a n d fo r e m o s t we should probably let you know that Ocean is mainly filled with people (drunk and delirious students) dressed from head to toe in fancy dress so do not bother splashing out on a fancy shirt as your money is better spent on a selection of items from the local fancy dress shop.

S e c o n d l y, b o t h g u y s a n d girls need to listen up to this one, clothes and shoes need to be of the cheaper

v a r i e t y. T h e y w i l l b e r i p p e d , they may be stolen, and they will most definitely end up covered in alcohol.

Unless you are ready to kiss goodbye to your £500 N i ke A i r m a x ’s because O c e a n i s l i ke l y t o t a ke hold of them, so word to the wise, stick to Primark.

And girls, leave the heels at home, the extensive bar crawl and treacherous stairs combined with the copious amounts of alcohol you have just consumed mean that any heel above one centimetre is quite e n o u g h . ( B e l i e v e m e ; i t ’s fo r y o u r o w n g o o d . ) T h i r d l y, j u s t a q u i c k h e a d s u p o n t h i s m a t t e r, you will realise after your f i r s t fe w t r i p s t h a t t h e r e is a certain song played

or most of you this will be the first time you have moved out of the parental home, and as liberating as it is to leave behind the nagging, moaning, and constant eye-watch of the mother a n d f a t h e r, a t l e a s t i n the beginning, you will h a v e t o ke e p i n t o u c h with them with frequent updates on what you’re up to, to put their minds to rest.

Now in my experience i t i s e a s i e r t o t e l l a fe w porkies instead of telling the whole truth of what y o u ’r e d o i n g a n d w h e n y o u ’r e d o i n g i t .

Tr y i n g t o e x p l a i n t o m y m u m d u r i n g f r e s h e r ’s w h y I was sat in McDonalds at 4am was a long and gruelling task. She could not comprehend how and why I had stumbled into the establishment at that hour.

So to save you e x p l a i n i n g , a n d t h e fo l k s w o r r y i n g , h e r e a r e a fe w ‘white lies’ or ‘half lies’ which ever term absorbs the guilt most to use whilst settling in.

One question which m i g h t b e f r e q u e n t l y a s ke d i f y o u m a ke y o u r d a i l y phone call while hungo v e r i n b e d , fe e l i n g s o r r y fo r y o u r s e l f : W h y a r e n’ t y o u a t y o u r 9 o’c l o c k lecture?

L e c t u r e r d i d n’ t s h o w up after ten minutes so they tell us to leave – which I did. Just abiding by the rules.

We got an email through saying it was cancelled this morning. (really you had a heavy night and even the thought of leaving your t h r e e - q u a r t e r b e d m a ke s you feel queezy) To a v o i d h u r t i n g t h e i r fe e l i n g s : W h y c a n’ t w e skype?

Deadlines are approaching mum, e v e r y o n e ’s o n t h e i n t e r n e t i t ’s t o o s l o w ( r e a l l y y o u ’ r e just about to start predrinks as oppose to being t u c ke d u p i n b e d c a t c h i n g u p o n r e a d i n g l i ke y o u told her)

Oh not late I’ll be h o m e b e f o r e 1 a m . I t ’s a ver y sophisticated but f u n n i g h t o u t . Yo u w o u l d approve! (really you’ll still be there gone 2am, wondering where half your fancy dress has gone) Why are you in your overdraft already?!

Books cost me a lot o f m o n e y, a n d i t i s important to socialise, go o u t a n d m a ke f r i e n d s a t u n i v e r s i t y (c o u g h , c o u g h beginning of term 20% student discount offers were just too tempting).

Other worries might be why you have been throwing up all day – blame your lack of culinary skills a n d y o u u n d e r c o o ke d y o u r c h i c ke n ! Top tips on how to make friends in your first year at university ‘Be upfront but not cocky’

oving to a completely new c i t y, with new people and new surroundings when you are only 18/19 years old is probably the most daunting and scariest thing you will ever do. So when it comes to making friends, your nerves can a l m o s t t a ke o v e r . T h e p h r a s e ‘Ever yone is in the same boat’ really does come into action.

My first tip would be to

not panic when faced with introducing yourself in front of people on your course. Be yourself, be upfront - but not cocky and arrogant otherwise y o u w i l l n o t m a ke f r i e n d s and engage in conversation.

Some would consider it rude but I engaged in other p e o p l e’s o p e n c o n v e r s a t i o n s and now one of my best friends was from one of them!

My next tip would be to mingle with your course m a t e s . D o n’t j u s t s t i c k t o one group of people, meet p e o p l e o n Fa c e b o o k w h o a r e o n t h e N o t t i n g h a m Tr e n t freshers pages, go on Twitter.

Sometimes you have to m a ke t h a t f i r s t s t e p a n d y o u may find they will become one of your closest friends.

When moving into your accommodation, always prop your door open so you and your new flatmates can say hi when going past each o t h e r ’s doors.

The Bodega: What is it?

H o w e v e r, with their recently renovated neon sign now bathing t h e u p p e r e n d o f Pe l h a m S t r e e t i n i t s w a r m g l o w, i t ’s s t e p p i n g o u t o f t h e shadows.

‘Looking back even over the last year it’s slightly mind bending.’

The Bodega is a venue o f m a n y f a c e t s . B y d a y, i t s bar is a relaxing sanctuary f r o m N o t t i n g h a m’s b u s y streets, where you can chill out whilst sampling their impressive selection of craft beers, and the equally choice selection of music o n t h e i r j u ke b ox . O r o f c o u r s e t h e r e’s t h e i r b e e r garden, which still remains o n e o f t h e b e s t - ke p t s e c r e t s in Nottingham.

Later on above the bar is a live music venue, which is the best place in the c i t y t o c a t c h t o m o r r o w ’s big bands in an intimate setting.

Looking back e v e n o v e r t h e l a s t y e a r i t ’s slightly mind-bending to t h i n k t h a t fe s t i v a l h e a d l i n e b a n d s l i ke T h e 1 9 7 5 a n d Fe n e c h S o l e r p l a y e d t h e r e , and going back even

Free wi-fi on NCT Go2 Uni buses

o t t i n g h a m ’ s University students will be able to Tweet, status update, check emails and even surf the net for those last-minute ‘Help!

I’ v e g o t a p r e s e n t a t i o n next seminar!’ panics, as N o t t i n g h a m C i t y Tr a n s p o r t introduces free wi-fi on its Go2 Uni buses.

Fr o m t h e s t a r t o f t h e n e w academic year on 23rd S e p t e m b e r, G o 2 U n i b u s e s 4, 31 and 34 will all be f i t t e d w i t h t h i s t e c h n o l o g y, enabling passengers to connect to the internet using their smart phones or tablets free of charge –

Anthony C a r v e r-S m i t h explains, “With real-time technology indicating exactly when buses will arrive, plus regular updates on our website, Fa c e b o o k a n d T w i t t e r fe e d , our customers have come to recognise that they c a n r e l y o n u s fo r c l e a r, a c c u r a t e i n fo r m a t i o n . We believe this has helped us

achieve an 11th successive year of passenger growth, when nationally bus usage in England (outside London) has fallen by 2 .5 % .

Our l o n g e r- t e r m plan is to roll out free wifi across more busy bus routes and continue to find innovative, 21st century ways of improving journeys fo r o u r p a s s e n g e r s . ”

How to stick to a student food budget

fter a summer of s p e n d i n g , i t ’s s a f e t o say that budgeting is the last thing on our minds as term starts and we begin to plan ways to spend our s t u d e n t l o a n s . B u t l i ke i t or not, you have to eat, and no matter how you look at it, surviving on a d i e t o f p a s t a j u s t d o e s n’t cut it. But spending money o n fo o d s h o p p i n g d o e s n’t have to break the bank.

eing a university student does not s c r e a m l u x u r y. I t d o e s n’t n o w, i t d e f i n i t e l y d i d n’t ‘back in the day’ of our parents and it probably w o n’t i n t h e f u t u r e .

S t u d e n t l i fe i s a b a ke d bean filled existence wearing bed socks and dealing with a constant battle with a lack of clothes due to a lack of washing.

But, in the final year of your university experience, I say i t ’s t i m e t o g i v e y o u r s e l f a fe w g r o w n u p t r e a t s .

Lesson 1 – Friends from home should never be alone.

One such friend was R o b e r t p i c t u r e d b e l o w.

He was staying with a friend in Hampden Hall, a residence known fo r i t s w i l d p a r t i e s a n d i n h a b i t ants. Whilst on a night out with

his student friend Robert made the tragic decision to disappear back to halls by himself, unable to ke e p u p w i t h t h e a l c o h o l c o n t e n t .

Unable to access a bed as he had n o ke y h e w a s fo r c e d t o i n t r o d u c e h i m s e l f t o t h o s e w h o w e r e d r i n king in their flats.

A d e c i s i o n w a s fo r c e d u p o n h i m – sit outside or be initiated into the halls. Fifteen minutes later Robert emerged with the hairstyle b e l o w, r i d d i n g h i m o f a s t y l e h e h a d g r o w n fo r n u m e r o u s y e a r s . I t is said the train home the next day was one of the least amusing of his l i fe a n d h i s s t u d e n t f r i e n d n e v e r had any more visitors.

2,4 Dinitrophenol, commonly known as ‘DNP’, is an industria l c h e m i c a l t h a t h a s b e e n fo u n d in a number of weight loss products targeted at body builders and those wishing to lose weight. Join Trent Tigers Come and join the Cheerleading society 2013-14!

T

his year marks the first ever pre-season f o r t h e Tr e n t T i g e r s . We chose 25 of the teams most dedicated and hard working girls to train relentlessly fo r t w o w e e k s l e a d i n g u p t o a p e r fo r m a n c e a t Saturday Antics on the last Saturday of freshers week. The 25 girls will be led by our returning coach and a new All Star coach.

We w i l l b e l o o k i n g fo r n e w g u y s a n d g i r l s fo r t h e team at all the freshers f a i r s . We h a v e h u n d r e d s o f p e o p l e s i g n u p e a c h y e a r, some with experience but

most without. During the two taster sessions and two pre-tryout training sessions everyone is taught basic skills, dances and jumps.

New recruits do not have to have experience but must have a drive to learn and to dedicate themselves throughout the year.

Our first full team p e r fo r m a n c e t h i s y e a r w i l l be at Xplosion on Sky Sports to support Nottingham Tr e n t ’s A m e r i c a n Fo o t b a l l Te a m .

This is a big a p p e a r a n c e fo r o u r s q u a d s o i t w i l l t a ke a l o t o f h a r d work from all members to

put together a big routine to stand out against the other cheerleading squad t h a t w i l l b e p e r fo r m i n g .

Cheerleading is a high risk, high flying, athletic sport which requires a lot of training both as an

individual and as a team in o r d e r t o e xc e l e a c h y e a r. O u r team includes incredible gymnasts, dancers and a lot of strength giving us incredible potential this season!

fo o t b a l l , c r i c ke t a n d r u g b y are readily available there are many more that slip under the radar.

The week gives you a chance to settle in at University a n d s a m p l e t h e l i fe y o u a r e about to embark on. Part of this is the chance to sample t h e d i f fe r e n t c l u b a c r o s s the campuses.

No w t h e r a n g e o f s o c i e t i e s is endless so whether it is tennis or scuba diving you want to get in to, there is s o m e t h i n g fo r y o u . A n d i f i t i s n’t a l r e a d y s e t u p , g e t y o u and some mates involved and the ability to set up your own club is there.
