Coal Center Resident Places in 2024

“Leap In” State Park and Forest Photo Contest

Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) welcomed over 300 photo submissions for the 2024 “Leap In” Photo Contest and sends a ‘congratulations’ to all participants and the top 20 winners.

“The annual photo contest not only demonstrates the beauty and history of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests, it demonstrates peoples’ connections to these special places,” said Marci Mowery, President of the Foundation. “We applaud the photographers for capturing the images and we applaud the leaders who had the foresight to conserve these special places for today and generations to come.”

Holly April Harris, resident of Coal Center, won Judge’s Choice in the “Beyond the Edge” category for her photo taken at Ohiopyle State Park.

Having extra time from driving around the mountains to see the Mountain Laurel in bloom, Holly decided to stop at Ohiopyle State Park and arrived just in time to watch the kayakers go through the rapids.

“It just so happened that there were 4 kayakers taking turns going over the big falls when I got there, so I decided to see if I could get some good shots of them to share the experience with others. I stood there talking with the park ranger watching them,” she recalls. “The kayakers were very skilled and a lot of fun to watch. I’d never seen anybody going over the falls before and it was a neat experience!”

Holly continues to tell us about her love of the state park. “What is not to love about Ohiopyle? It has everything - waterfalls, wildlife, scenic views, trails, rare wildflowers, the bike trail, the river… I like nature and taking photos and every portion of the park is a different opportunity to see something

cool and beautiful! I spend as much time as I can in our state parks and forests - the beauty, peace and magic of nature is well preserved in our beautiful parks and forests.”

Cook Continues Growing 50th District Through Student Advisors Program

Since beginning his service as state representative, Rep. Bud Cook (RGreene/Washington) has recognized the importance of ensuring young people are engaged in both government and growth in the area. Through his Student Advisor Initiative, Cook aims to keep young people in the region after their academic careers.

Two students from each school district serve on the advisory council. They are charged with identifying assets, attractions and activities within the boundaries of each school district and community and presenting their findings to the representative and staff. In 2025 alone, Cook has already visited seven of the 10 school districts in the 50th District and hopes to visit the rest as soon as possible.

“Our young people are our biggest asset to grow our communities, and our student advisor program gives them the opportunity to work with their own generation to grow the 50th into a region they are proud to call home,” Cook said. “I am thrilled with the input and the hard work of our students to make this program a success.”

The 50th Legislative District is composed of the following school districts: Bentworth, Bethlehem-Center, Brownsville Area, California Area, Carmichaels Area, Central Greene, Charleroi, Jefferson-Morgan, Southeastern Greene and West Greene.

Students interested in being involved in the Student Advisor Initiative may contact Cook’s office at 724-929-2660.

Marketing the Presidency: 125 Years of Presidential Artifacts

West Jefferson Hills Historical Society Presentation

There’s more to an election than simply a discussion of issues; it is also about winning the hearts of the voters themselves. While issues are certainly important, many historic Presidential campaigns went a step further to leave an impression on the voting public. From a catchy slogan to the unusual shower head nozzle, presidential hopefuls over the years found exciting and fun ways to remain memorable to their potential supporters.

At the West Jefferson Hills Historical Society March program, Steve Mihaly, historian and avid collector of Presidential artifacts, will deliver the program "Marketing the Presidency: 125 Years of Presidential Artifacts" on this fascinating aspect of political history. As part of his presentation, Steve will display a number of authentic artifacts from previous Presidential elections. Both society members and the general public are invited to attend this free program on March 26, 2025 at 7:00 P.M. in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building. The evening promises to be as elucidating as it is entertaining.

West Newton Woman's Club will be holding a Craft and Vendor Show on Saturday, April 12 from 9:00AM to 3:00pPM. The event will take place at the West Newton Gym, located at 113 South 5th Street, in West Newton. Many local crafters, vendors and Basket Raffle.

Rostraver Township to Hold Annual MS4 Public Education and Outreach Program, March 24

Rostraver Township is committed to safeguarding our precious water resources through the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4). The EPA and DEP regulate this program to combat water pollution and protect our streams and rivers, including the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. Together, we can make a meaningful difference to our environment. Here are some simple yet impactful ways we can make a difference:

•Wash your car on grass or gravel instead of on the street or driveway. Soap, scum, and oil residue can run into the storm drains, eventually reaching streams.

• Avoid fertilizing your lawn the day of a storm to prevent chemicals from washing into local streams and rivers.

•Do n ot empty grass clippings or raked leaves into streams.

• Other small acts include securing trash, shoveling snow before salting, and storing chemicals in waterproof containers.

These small actions can significantly impact the safety and cleanliness of our community’s water. Join us to learn more about Rostraver Township’s MS4 program at our Annual Public Education and Outreach Program on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 5pm and visit our website at www.rostraver.us. Together, let’s champion the health of our waterways for generations to come.

9th Annual Eldora Park Walking Tours

You’ve heard of Eldora Park before, but had no idea where it was. Now is your chance to satisfy your curiosity. After eight years of successful tours, the Donora Historical Society has scheduled their ninth annual Eldora Park Walking Tours for Saturday, April 26 at 12:00 noon and Sunday, April 27 at 1:00 pm.

Located three miles west of Donora, Eldora Park opened in 1904 to an overwhelming throng of five thousand people. Compared to the more famous trolley parks, the amusements were relatively meager: a gravity roller coaster, a carousel, a “bamboo” slide, and games of chance and skill. Just as important were the picnic pavilions, the bandstand and dance pavilion (converted into a roller rink in the winter), an “Electric Theater,” a picture gallery, a restaurant, and curiously Landfeld’s Men’s Clothing Store. Still, this tiny, outof-the-way trolley park was able to attract world renowned speakers and performers.

These tours on April 26 and 27 will be the only Eldora Park tours this year. Names, phone numbers and email addresses are now being accepted and added to a RSVP signup list. It’s anticipated that both tours will fill up, so please respond with your flexibility for each of the two dates. You will be contacted by phone or email to confirm your RSVP. If you can’t make this year’s tour, it’s encouraged that you still contact the Historical Society to get on a RSVP reminder list for next year.

The tours will start at the Smog Museum (595 McKean Avenue) with a photo and newspaper article presentation highlighting the amenities and personalities mentioned above. Two century-old Eldora Park panoramic photos will also be featured. The presenter will be Smog Museum curator and archivist Brian Charlton.

The tour groups will then drive the three miles to the Eldora section of Carroll Township to conduct the walking tour portion on the historic Wickerham farm, retracing the trolley line and trample through the wooded footprint of the original park with the help of one of the Wickerham descendants.

South Hills Coin Club to Meet

The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held Tuesday evening March 11, at 7:30 PM at the Bethel Park municipal building located at 5100 West Library Avenue located in Bethel Park. Applications are now being accepted for membership. For more information call 724984-6611.

Two hiking routes can be taken, one more demanding than the other. You may do as much hiking as you’d like to see the ruins and understand where the park amenities once existed a century ago. Three guides will be on hand to tell stories, point out ruins, and guide the groups. The cost is $12 per person and you should allow two hours for the presentation and walking tour. Appropriate footwear is suggested due to potentially wet or muddy conditions on portions of the trail. Hiking or walking sticks are also encouraged. Space will be limited for each tour.

If you have any questions about our Eldora Park Walking Tours, please consult our website and click on “Donora History” then “Eldora Park Walking Tour” tab, or contact the Historical Society.

The Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum is located at 595 McKean Avenue or at the intersection of Sixth and McKean in the heart of Donora. If you have additional questions, feel free to stop by or email us at DonoraHistoricalSociety@gmail.com or by calling 724-823-0364 and leave a message. All messages will be returned within a few days.

Belle Vernon Public Library Announces Goodwill Donation Drive on April 1

An annual tradition is coming to Belle Vernon Public Library when once again they host a donation drive at Goodwill of SWPA’s Tri County Plaza location. Donations brought to that Goodwill location on Tuesday, April 1 between 3:00PM – 6:00PM will help the library raise money, as well benefit Goodwill in their mission to help people overcome barriers to employment.

“Our theme this year is ‘No joke – your donation matters’,” noted Library Director Elina Filander. “An April Fool’s Day event might seem early to ‘Spring Clean” your clothes, DVDs and what-nots, but you’ll go into Easter with a tidy home and help our local Goodwill.”

The Belle Vernon Goodwill donation center is located at 460 Tri County Lane on the side of the resale shop and will staffed by library volunteers during the event.

Acceptable donations include clothing, handbags, glass and housewares, cooking accessories, musical instruments, sports equipment and toys. Among the items that cannot be included in the donation day is furniture, baby cribs and gates, computers and televisions. A full list of acceptable and unacceptable items is available at the library.

For those unable to get to the Goodwill on April 1, items may be dropped off at the library beginning on Friday, March 21. The library is in the North Belle Vernon Municipal Building, 505 Speer Street. Hours of operation are Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday noon to 6 and Friday and Saturday 9 to 4. For more info, contact the library at 724929-6642.

Sanderson Psychological Continues to Expand Mental Health Care Offerings to the Community

Sanderson Psychological has been serving the Elizabeth and surrounding communities since 2016 and opened a second location in Washington, PA in 2023. With almost 30 counselors, the practice has continued to expand their expertise and service offerings to support mental health in the surrounding communities.

Mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being. As awareness about mental health continues to grow, the role of mental health counseling providers becomes increasingly critical. The importance of mental health counseling providers extends far beyond the individual; they serve as vital pillars in fostering healthier, more resilient communities by helping families improve their relationships, giving couples the tools they need for better communication and individuals an outlet to process life’s challenges.

As the years have gone by, the practice has grown, expanding their offerings to better serve the community including EMDR, bariatric clearances, police candidate evaluations, and more. Sanderson Psychological is now offering psychological testing as well.

Psychological testing is about gathering information so that a clinician can provide a diagnosis which can help a person gain better self-understanding and the support they need whether that be counseling, accommodations, or referrals. Psychological testing can provide clarity on how to move forward with care and compassion and to help a person overcome challenges and harness their true potential. Testing will be available for ADHD (diagnostic and neuropsychological), Autism Spectrum Disorder, IQ, Bipolar disorder and more. Sanderson Psychological looks forward to continuing to be an advocate for mental health in the community and giving access to these much needed services and evaluations. Access to mental health services fosters a sense of security and well-being among community members and Sanderson Psychological is at the heart of building that in the Elizabeth and Washington communities. For more information, or to make an appointment, please call (412) 754-1100 or visit www.sandersonpsychological.com.

Color Your Kitchen: Butter Makes Everything Better

(BPT) - The psychology of color reveals what most people already know: Color can evoke strong emotions. Members of the design team at Whirlpool Corporation are well versed in how color impacts mood, which is one of the reasons they spent years researching color trends to identify the best possible choice for the KitchenAid® 2025 Color of the Year: Butter.

"The Color of the Year program is specifically led by the Whirlpool Color, Finish, and Material team. We spend years analyzing interior design, social, cultural and aesthetic trends to help determine the new Color of the Year - a decision that is often many years in the process," said Brittni Pertijs, Design Manager: Color, Material and Finish at Whirlpool Corporation. "Color of the Year focuses on a specific colorway to express the emotions people want to feel that year."

This year's choice for Color of the Year: Butter

It's not just for baking anymore! This modern yellow with a creamy, satin finish imparts a uniquely comforting vibe, with a nostalgic aura all its own.

our team saw yellow continually pop up," said Pertijs. "Knowing we wanted to tap into comfort and nostalgia, this soft, energizing butter yellow felt like the perfect marriage of all those elements."

According to a 2024 online Ipsos Survey*, nearly 3 in 4 consumers (72%) agree that a buttery yellow color radiates warmth and comfort, and 67% associate the color with a sense of richness and creaminessmaking it a top choice for creating a welcoming atmosphere in the kitchen. More than half (52%) connect the hue with comforting homemade meals, and the same percentage agree that a buttery yellow color transports them back to nostalgic childhood memories. A majority of consumers (64%) also connect this color to the simple pleasures in life.

"The color yellow has the ability to transport you back in time, evoking some of your warmest memories," added Pertijs. "The color might remind people of kitchens from the

1950s or 1960s that were decorated with a similar soft yellow color. While it echoes past kitchens, Butter feels fresh and modern, leaning into present-day design trends. It's a classic neutral that will last over the years."

Design tips: How to make the most of this year's color

To maximize the warm, comfy vibes of this year's Color of the Year, you can choose to upgrade to the new KitchenAid® Stand Mixer in Butter. The Butter Stand Mixer works well as a design feature in any style of home, from eclectic and traditional styles to clean and contemporary spaces. It's also created to fit in perfectly with the latest kitchen designs and finishes. While some may recall the Majestic Yellow color, "that was developed in 1995, which was reflective of interior trends such as red cherry woods and glossy countertop finishes. The new Butter model represents today's design trends, in which woods are more natural and countertops are matte and satin," explained Pertijs.

For anyone looking to accessorize or update their kitchen this year, the Butter Stand Mixer complements various shades of blue well, including periwinkle blue. If you're looking to mix and match it with other appliances, Butter looks great with the KitchenAid Blue Velvet colorway, or more muted tones like sage green.

Pertijs also recommends pairing the Butter Stand Mixer with the KitchenAid® Bread Bowl attachment: "They go together like bread and butter (pun intended)!"

7 Garden Growing Basics for Beginners

(Family Features) Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your at-home garden:

1. Select a perfect spot. You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily.

SOUTH

2. Choose between ground and containers. The best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.

3. Understand the importance of quality soil. The soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or aged manure all help improve soil quality.

4. Keep water close. Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose.

5. Plan for plenty of sun. A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day.

6. Consider what you’ll grow. Early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. Plant according to a calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?

A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.

Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.

The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.

Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.

There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to

If

reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.

An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.

A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.

Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc. To contact Dr. Wang, please call 724-483-3688.

NEUROPATHY TREATMENT

South Hills Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers Now Have Hope

Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA is currently scheduling patients at their Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road.

Dr. Michael Renk, Tri State Neuropathy Centers

Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.

“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it early.”

Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 12,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.

West Mifflin Area K-5 Students Recognized for Academic Growth

West Mifflin Area School District elementary and middle school classrooms recently were recognized for achieving the most significant growth in math and reading during the first two quarters of this year.

West Mifflin’s mascot, ‘T the Titan’, was a surprise visitor in the classrooms as the announcements were made to the teachers and students by district Math Coach Tina Keller and WMASD Literacy Coach Dina Fouser.

Soon after the school year began, students in Grades K-5 were given the Acadience Benchmark test for reading and math. The students were retested in January, the data compiled, and the classrooms in each grade that made the most significant growth in their composite scores were recognized.

“During the benchmarking process, Ms. Keller and I have the privilege of witnessing the remarkable growth of West Mifflin K-5 students,” Fouser said. “Their success is a testament to the dedication of the teachers and staff, who work tirelessly to ensure that all students continue to achieve and thrive.”

“We are really proud of how hard the students are working, and we look forward to seeing them progress even more this year and continuing to highlight their accomplishments,” Keller stated.

In addition to the growth accolades, classrooms also were recognized for winning the monthly Spring Math competition (Mrs. Maria Rader and Mrs. Gina Hilligsberg) and Mr. Dzuka’s students were the top fifth grade Study Island math class in January.
