Monessen War Veterans Memorial Trust Honors Founders
The Monessen War Veterans Memorial Trust came about from an idea by Steve Major Sr., who shared it with then Judge Gilfert Mihalich. It was then proposed to the membership of the Thomas McKee American Legion Post 28 and the Allison Lescanac Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1190 in May of 2011.
The first Commanders and Adjutants responsible for initiating the Trust were Gregory Dacko, and Wayne Vlasic, American Legion and James Pallini and John Cheroki, VFW, along with the members of both organizations. Judge Mihalich and John Billy were instrumental in preparing all the legal aspects of the Trust and the By-Laws were written with input from all members of both organizations.
Sadly all but three of the original group are now deceased, but also need to be remembered as the founders of the Trust.
The three remaining, living members, Gregory Dacko, James Pallini and Wayne Vlasic were honored with plaques at individual presentations by the current Chairman of the Trust Ron Chromulak, to recognize them for their service to the Trust and the City of Monessen. They are our Outstanding Veterans. The plaques were donated by an anonymous donor.
One of the objectives of the Monessen War Veterans Memorial Trust is to instill patriotism in our youth by perpetuating the names and memories of the Monessen War Veterans thereby indelibly inscribing the names of those Veterans in the history of the United States of America.
The veterans’ organizations were concerned that future maintenance, cleaning and repair would be neglected thus desecrating the memories of the Monessen War Veterans, especially those who made the supreme sacrifice. The trust was established for the preservation of and the maintaining, repairing and cleaning only the war memorials located in Monessen at the Island in the East Gate section, the Honor Roll the Sherman Tank and the numerous memorial plaques located in the City park, the memorial plaque at the stadium, the Keystone memorial at 12th Street and the memorial plaque at City Hall. Those are the only bonafide war memorials, established by the Veterans Organizations, all other memorials are either private or belong to other organizations.
Anyone wishing to donate to the trust can make out their check to, and send their donation to: Monessen War Veterans Memorial Trust, P O Box 145, Monessen, Pa. 15062

Light Up the Holidays
Join the Ultimate Christmas Tree Decorating Contest at the South Park Township Library!
This holiday season, the Friends of South Park Township Library is turning the library into a winter wonderland, and you’re invited to be part of the magic! Get ready for a festive Christmas tree decorating contest that’s sure to spark some serious holiday cheer and a bit of friendly competition that even the Griswold’s would envy. Families, kids, and teens are challenged to bring their own small tabletop tree (no taller than three feet) and turn it into a dazzling holiday masterpiece. Use homemade and unbreakable ornaments and let your imagination run wild! Whether you go classic, quirky, or totally unique, every tree will be showcased atop the library’s bookcases, blanketing the space in a merry and bright atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. The community gets to play judge by casting votes for their favorite trees, how? Simply bring a non-perishable food item to the library! Each donation counts as one vote and helps support our local Meals on Wheels program.
To enter, participants contribute a $10 donation, with all proceeds benefiting the library’s programs and projects. But don’t wait to start planning as the contest is limited, so gather your family, roll up your sleeves, and sign up at the library soon.
Stay tuned for more details, and get ready to light up the season with creativity, kindness, and a little holiday sparkle!

Garden cemeteries look like parks with pathways, trees, foliage, and benches. Before there were public parks, this is where people went on Sunday afternoons to picnic, contemplate, make love, and take afternoon strolls. Linda Reese invites you to come and listen as she walks with you through a garden cemetery and see the stories the angels tell. Penn Highlands Mon Valley/Carroll Township Police Collect Drugs
Penn Highlands Mon Valley and the Carroll Township Police Department joined forces to help keep drugs off of the streets in the Mon Valley region during the semiannual National Drug Take Back Day on October 25, 2025. The team collected 247 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications during the four-hour event.
“We have been participating in this event twice a year for many years and we continue to be amazed by the number of medications we collect during these events,” said Margaret (Peggy) Brown, PharmD., BCPS, Director of Pharmacy at Penn Highlands Mon Valley.
Once the medications were collected, the law enforcement officers sealed the boxes and representatives from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) weighed each of them. The DEA will safely dispose of the contents.
Penn Highlands Mon Valley is a permanent Drug Take Back site. A secure receptacle is located in the Waiting Room of the hospital’s Emergency Department. The locked container is accessible 24/7. In addition, the service is free and anonymous. People who choose to use the confidential box at Penn Highlands Mon Valley should remove or black out all personal information before disposing of the medications. While liquid products and creams in containers with secured lids are accepted, sharps and syringes are not accepted due to the potential exposure to blood-borne diseases.

Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital Honored for Breast-Cancer Care by Neighborhood Ford Store Volunteer Project
For its outstanding services to breast-cancer patients, both the nurse navigators and radiation departments at Penn Highlands Monongahela Hospital were honored by Quilt for the Cure Supported by Neighborhood Ford Store.
The hospital was selected for a pilot project in which patients in treatment can sign a quilt made by the Martha Washington Quilters Guild of Washington County.
“Usually our quilts are made from squares decorated by the public in support, comfort and remembrance of breast-cancer patients, but we saw the need for the patients to express themselves as part of our Quilt for the Cure outreach. If this pilot project is helpful to patients, our volunteers will incorporate it into the program,” said Dan Wind, a member of Neighborhood Ford Store’s Board of Directors — Washington Ford and Woltz & Wind Ford.
A second, traditional Quilt for the Cure quilt also was presented to the hospital. It was made from squares decorated by the public by the Fort Henry Piecemakers Quilting Guild of Wheeling, WV. In addition, smaller “micro-quilts” were donated for compact treatment spaces.
Quilt for the Cure Supported by Neighborhood Ford Store is a volunteer organization entirely financially supported by the region’s 76 Ford Dealers in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virgina. Quilt for the Cure only
seeks public participation in the decorating of its squares to make its quilts — which is free to all. The project never seeks nor accepts financial contributions for its breast-cancer awareness outreach as it is fully financially supported by the area’s Ford Dealers. Although October is breast-cancer awareness month, Quilt for the Cure’s outreach operates throughout the year. For more info: www.QuiltForTheCure.com
The hospital’s radiation department received a traditional Quilt for the Cure quilt, in addition to “micro quilts” for its smaller spaces. This quilt was made by the Fort Henry Piecemakers of Wheeling, WV.

Christmas Breakfast and Puppet Show Set for December 13
Thomas Presbyterian Church helps to kick off the Christmas season with their annual Christmas Breakfast and Puppet Show on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
A: As a trusted Serta Mattress dealer, we hear this question often—and it’s a smart one to ask. The general rule is to replace your mattress every 7–10 years. However, the right time can depend on how you sleep and the quality of your mattress. Serta’s advanced sleep technologies are designed to extend comfort and support over time. For example, the Serta Perfect Sleeper is built with targeted support zones and cool-to-the-touch fabrics, helping it maintain its feel longer than basic mattresses.
If you're looking for pressure relief and cooling, the Serta iComfort and iComfort Pro lines are worth considering. Made with carbon fiber memory foam and a range of cooling upgrades, these models offer consistent support—often well past the average replacement window, especially with proper care.
For those wanting classic comfort with modern innovation, the Perfect Sleeper X line combines all-foam or hybrid designs with motion control and antimicrobial protection—ideal for couples and allergy-sensitive sleepers.
Bottom line? If you're waking up sore, sleeping hot, or noticing sagging, it’s time to upgrade. Stop by Highway Appliance at 2214 Route 88, Dunlevy, PA, and see why customers from across the Mid Mon Valley trust us for better sleep.
“You're gonna like us a lot!” ...Since 1946.

The Rotary Clubs of Pleasant Hills and White Oak Strike Back at Polio with ‘Pins for Polio’ Cosmic Bowling Fundraiser
Bowling balls, bright lights, and big hearts came together recently as the Rotary Clubs of Pleasant Hills and White Oak — affectionately known as the “Pleasant Oaks” partnership — hosted a lively ‘Pins for Polio’ cosmic bowling fundraiser to support Rotary International’s global effort to eradicate polio.
Held at Spins on Sunday, October. 26, the event featured neon lights, upbeat music, and plenty of friendly competition. Bowlers of all ages filled the lanes, knocking down pins — and barriers — in the fight against this preventable disease.
“This was about having fun for a cause that truly matters,” said, Robert Weiss President Elect of the Pleasant Hills Rotary Club. “Every donation and every game brings us closer to a world without polio.”
Participants enjoyed an evening of cosmic bowling, 50/50 raffle, and community fellowship. Thanks to generous sponsors, lane donations, and individual contributions, the Pleasant Oaks Rotary team raised a generous amount of money to benefit Rotary International’s PolioPlus campaign, which funds vaccinations and surveillance efforts in regions where the virus still exists.
“The power of Rotary comes from partnerships like this,” added Michelle Petrell, our District Governor Elect. “Pleasant Hills and White Oak may be separate clubs, but when we come together, our impact multiplies. Tonight was
proof of that.”
The Rotary Foundation’s PolioPlus program, launched in 1985, has helped reduce global polio cases by more than 99.9%. Rotary continues to work alongside the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to ensure polio is wiped out for good.
Guests who attended said the event captured the spirit of Rotary — service with smiles.
“You could feel the energy,” said one participant. “It wasn’t just bowling — it was hope in motion.”
With the event’s success, both clubs say “Pins for Polio” may become an annual tradition. For more information or to support the cause, visit www.rotary.org or contact the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hills or Rotary Club of White Oak on Facebook.

Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk 2025 – Strength to Overcome
By Jill Runfola
The 22nd Annual Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Walk was held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, in Palmer Park, Donora. It was a day of coming together in victories, battles won, overcoming, love and sharing, and faith present. Over 100 people were in attendance this year. Registration began at 9:00AM, and the one-mile walk was at 10:00AM. The $20 fee went to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital for patients’ comfort items which included blankets, hats, personal care items, cozy socks, etc.
A raffle drawing was held at the end of the walk for a chance to win big seasonal gift baskets, and a 50/50 ticket was sold to win a lovely bracelet. Prizes, goodie bags, commemorative ribbons and games were available just for fun. The newest survivor and longest survivor were recognized.
This walk is to commemorate Lois Orange Ducoeur, who was a courageous lady and breast cancer survivor. Born in 1911, she was from Charleroi, Pa. Lois was married to Fernand or “Duke” Ducoeur, and they owned Orange’s Department store. Duke served in WWII, while Lois ran the business and raised their 4 children. Then in 1955, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery. She bravely fought the disease for 10 years before it ended her life in 1965, at age 54. Lois’s son, Tom, and her daughter-in-law Cora Sue partnered with the Charleroi Chamber of Commerce back in 2003 to establish the walk in honor of his mother and to benefit those with breast cancer.
For the past 22 years, this walk has partnered with Penn Highlands Mon Valley and raised funds to aide local women in their fight against the disease. Lois’s daughter, Carolyn “Susie” Ducoeur Christie also overcame ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed in 2018, and it cleared up in 2020. Lois’s granddaughter Rebecca Brown was pleased with the events. She said, “It’s for our people (at the hospital) that are surviving. It’s still good to do these types of things in the Valley.”
Sam Vida, Penn Highlands Fund Development Specialist and Special Event Strategist, said, “We are so appreciative of everyone who supported the 22nd Annual Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk through donations, sponsorships and registrations. It is truly inspiring how the community came together to uplift one another and stand behind such a great cause.”

Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum Has Old High School Football and Basketball Game Films Available
Among the many items that the Donora Historical Society has in its collection are over 125 basketball and football games of Mon Valley teams from 1955 to 1979. They are original 16mm films that are mostly converted to DVD (104 out of 125). We launched the project in 2015 to start to transfer the films to DVD to not only get them in a usable format to be added to our artifact collection and our presentation offerings, but to get these games in the hands of the players that played in them some 35 to 65 years ago.
Some games feature extensive footage of parent’s nights, football coaches, cheerleaders and bands. Most games sell for $25.00/game plus S&H.
For games that have yet to be converted, there is a cost to transfer to DVD that includes a copy charge. This charge can range from $40.00 to $70.00 depending on the game's length. If you are interested in a particular game that hasn't been converted, please let us know by sending an email.
As you can see below in our inventory list, all the Mon Valley teams are represented in most years. Some of the legendary Donora players included in these films are Larry Crawford, Malcolm Lomax, Bernie Galiffa, Ken Griffey, Art Coleman and Ulice Payne.
Other notable players such as: Fred Cox (Monongahela); Gary Seykoski and John Radic (Ringgold); Larry Hughes and Ken Burkes (Rostraver); Gary Cramer and Gene Belczyk (Belle Vernon); Jeff Petrucci and George Carlock (Charleroi); Marvin Davis, Joe Zdravecky and Lance Wall (Monessen); and Jim Brumfield (Elizabeth Forward) to name just a few.
Some teams have multiple games per season. The high school teams from the Mon Valley that have at least one game in a given season include:
Please consult our website www.donorahistoricalsociety.org and select the “Game Films” tab for a complete inventory. You can also send us an email at DonoraHistoricalSociety@gmail.com or call us at 724-823-0364 and leave a message with any questions.
If your game is not in our inventory, we do not know where it may be and we’re not aware of anyone else doing a project like this. All proceeds benefit the Donora Historical Society in completing this project.

OPHTHALMOLOGY
Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?
A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.
By Aaron S. Wang, M.D. Ophthalmologist Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants,
Inc
Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.
The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.
Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.
There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to
reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.
An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.
A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.
Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc.

Clean ducts don’t just help with comfort; they help with your wallet, too. A peer-reviewed energy study conducted by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) found that cleaning HVAC systems can improve airflow and efficiency, leading to measurable energy savings. That means your system won’t have to work as hard to heat your home, lowering utility bills while keeping rooms cozier.
Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality is also important. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends managing contaminants inside your ducts to help maintain healthier air indoors. When ducts are clogged with dust, pollen, even mold, every cycle of your furnace spreads those irritants throughout your home.
Asthma and allergy sufferers benefit most from the home having a professional duct cleaning. Removing dust mites, pet dander, and other airborne triggers can make breathing easier and reduce the frequency of flare-ups.

Beyond Mowing: Checklist for a Healthier Yard
(NAPSI)—Don’t put away your lawn equipment just yet. Fall isn’t just about admiring the colors and taking care of the leaves; it’s also a critical time for yard care. The TurfMutt Foundation, which advocates for the care and use of yards, parks, schoolyards and other green spaces, urges homeowners to get outside and start preparing their yards for the seasons ahead.
“Fall is the secret to a successful lawn,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation. “What you do in your yard this season will pay off with a greener, healthier yard next spring. By taking a few simple steps, you can set up your yard for a stunning comeback just in time for next year’s backyarding season.”
The TurfMutt Foundation shares this fall checklist to ensure our yards¬—and the planet—stay healthy:
• Aerate the Soil: Aerating creates small holes that let air, water and nutrients reach the roots, making them stronger to withstand the winter. This is especially important in compacted, high-traffic areas.
• Mow at the Right Height: Keep mowing until the first hard frost. For the final cut, lower your mower blade
(Continued on following page.)
from previous page.)
to about two inches. A shorter cut helps prevent mold and allows the grass to dry out quickly in the spring.
• Overseed: Fall is a favorable time to overseed to fill bare spots and make your lawn resilient. The combination of the warm soil, cool air, and moisture in autumn helps seeds germinate.
• Mulch Leaves: Instead of bagging your leaves, consider mulching them. Mulched leaves return valuable nutrients back into your lawn, acting as Mother Nature’s fertilizer.
• Think About Wildlife: Nature starts at your back door. Limit deadheading and trimming to provide food and shelter for local birds, insects, and other wildlife that rely on our yards during the colder months.
• Plant Bulbs for Spring: Before the ground freezes, plant spring-blooming bulbs such as daffodils and tulips that will add a burst of color to your yard in the spring. Use the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to find the best native bulbs for each area: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/. For more ideas, visit www.turfmutt.com.

A recent study from Texas A&M University found that the U.S. has experienced a 20% annual increase in power outage severity since 2019. With that has come increases in the length and frequency of power outages with more customers being affected annually. Areas that have reported some of the highest risks of weatherinduced blackouts fall along the coastlines and in the Great Lakes regions –

areas that commonly see severe weather like hurricanes, tornadoes or powerful thunderstorms.
“As the number of severe weather events rise, so too has the number of blackouts,” said Kyle Raabe, President of Consumer Power for Generac Power Systems. “In 2024, the U.S. had nearly 1.5 billion electric outage hours, which was the most since Generac began tracking this statistic.
For National Preparedness Month, the power outage experts at Generac advise people to make a plan for severe weather that includes a source of backup power and to identify the backup power option that will best fit their home’s needs in the next outage.
Several options exist for those looking to secure backup power in emergency situations. Each has advantages and drawbacks, and the choice will depend on individual needs, budget and the specific risks posed by the local climate.
• Home Standby Generators are not only a more permanent solution but also the most reliable option. These units are installed outside the home and are connected directly to the electrical panel. Standby generators are powered by natural gas or propane and automatically activate when utility power is disrupted, allowing for continuous power for extended periods of time. This makes them ideal for homes in areas prone to frequent or prolonged outages.
• Portable Generators, also known as open frame generators, are an ideal option for emergency backup power. Fueled by gasoline or liquid propane, portable generators can power the whole home or connect to individual appliances with an extension cord. While larger than inverters and portable power stations, portable generators include features like handles and tires for easy positioning.
• Inverter Generators are an efficient, lightweight portable generator, perfect for those who want a compact but powerful backup power solution. Unlike classic portable generators, inverter generators are fully enclosed and operate quietly. The easy start function is a distinct benefit of inverter generators, which start with the

turn of a dial instead of the manual pull cord used on larger generators.
• Battery-Powered Portable Power Stations are an emission-free option that doesn’t require fuel, offering a backup power source designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Ideal for condos or apartments, they are even quieter than inverter generators, operating without any sound. Portable power stations are the smallest backup power option and can power a wide range of electronics that are crucial during an outage, including phones, refrigerators, sump pumps, laptops and more.
The 2025 fall and winter seasons are expected to bring a high risk of extreme weather events, making backup power solutions a preparedness priority. A backup power source is not just about convenience; it’s about being prepared for the unexpected.
