6 / OUR LOCATIONS

WHERE YOU LIVE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU LEARN Where you live is a big part of your student experience, and it’s important you feel at home. We have quality accommodation at our three locations: Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd. And no matter where you live, you’ll find the best of South Wales right on your doorstep.

SWANSEA PONTYPRIDD

NEWPORT

CARDIFF BRISTOL

7 / OUR LOCATIONS

CARDIFF We love our capital, and we know you will too. It’s the UK’s fastest-growing major city with real multicultural and cosmopolitan vibes. Here you’ll find a great quality of life, lots of fantastic people, and more green space per person than any other UK city. From historic sites to rooftop cinemas, street food pop-ups, live theatre, coffee shops, global sports, vibrant music scene, festivals, and so much more, you’ll never get bored. Your money goes further here too – Cardiff was named the UK’s most affordable city for students.*

NEWPORT Newport is a compact city with a real can-do attitude. It’s steeped in history with its cobbled streets, Roman baths, medieval castles and Victorian architecture. Newport is also a city on the rise – it’s home to Europe’s biggest redeveloped indoor market, a foodie haven, packed with event spaces and independent businesses. Take your pick of Newport’s cosy cafés, vibrant bars, culinary hotspots, lively nightclubs, and of course, the multi-awardwinning brewery Tiny Rebel.

PONTYPRIDD Pontypridd is an authentic Welsh market town at heart, where you’ll find plenty of local shops, cafés and bars. You’ll also find a welcoming tight knit community. On campus, it’s easy to feel like you’re away from it all – yet hop on the train and you’re in the middle of Cardiff within 20 minutes. Framed by green hills, Pontypridd is also a stone’s throw from the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Pull on your boots and escape into the famous Welsh hills. Or take a morning dip in the National Lido of Wales, if that’s more your thing.

8 / CHOOSING ACCOMMODATION THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

ACCOMMODATION THAT’S MORE THAN JUST A ROOM Your uni home is just around the corner.

9 / CHOOSING ACCOMMODATION THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

CHOOSING ACCOMMODATION THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU We know the idea of moving out can be daunting. Don’t worry, we’re here to make sure you find the right place. There are lots of accommodation options to fit all budgets and lifestyles.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

UNIVERSITY-OWNED HALLS If you decide to live in Pontypridd, you can choose to live in our halls of residence on campus. These halls are run directly by USW, and you can apply through the University (more on that later). Living in halls is a brilliant way to make friends and feel part of the USW family, particularly in your first year. There’s lots going on, and if you’re studying at our Pontypridd campus, you’re only a few minutes’ walk from your morning lectures.

PRIVATE HALLS If you want to live in Cardiff or Newport you can live in halls, too. The only difference is USW doesn’t own the halls there. Instead, we partner with carefully selected private providers. It’s exactly the same warm, welcoming vibe. You’ll meet tonnes of USW students, plus students from other universities and colleges.

PRIVATE HOUSE Another option is to rent a private house or flat with friends. It’s your own space and you can choose your house mates. But it does come with all the admin of renting a house, and you’ll likely have to commit to it for a full year. Our students who rent private houses tend to do so from their second year onwards, rather than when they first arrive.

LIVING AT HOME If you’re local to the region, then living at home is always an option!

18 / ACCOMMODATION CHECKLIST

ACCOMMODATION CHECKLIST Think you’ve found the one? Make sure it ticks all the boxes.

YOU’VE LOOKED AT HALLS. YOU’VE EXPLORED PRIVATE STUDENT RENTALS. AND YOU THINK YOU’VE FOUND THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR YOU. GREAT! BUT BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE, HERE’S A FINAL CHECKLIST:

IS IT AFFORDABLE? Money is one of the most important (and obvious) things to consider when choosing where to live. Based on your student funding and your budget, can you afford to pay the rent every month? Take some time to work out costs. For instance, student halls may appear more expensive than other options but as they include bills and amenities, they may be cheaper in the long run. Check out our budgeting hints and tips on page 22.

DOES IT OFFER EVERYTHING YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? Grab a notebook and write down your accommodation ‘must-haves.’ If you’re a person who values their own space, a studio apartment or an en-suite room is perfect for you. If you’re a fitness fanatic, then an on-site gym will be right up your street. Compare everything each accommodation offers against your list.

WILL IT HELP YOU MAKE FRIENDS? Living in halls offers a real advantage, particularly in your first year, as there are many opportunities to socialise. Our Cardiff and Newport halls are also open to students from different universities, so you’ll meet a broad range of people.

IS IT IN A GOOD LOCATION? Living in halls is a no-brainer when it comes to picking a convenient location. But if you choose to live further away, make sure there’s enough public transport options available so you can get to campus.

IS IT LEGIT? Before you sign your contract, check the landlord is accredited with ‘Rent Smart Wales.’ This will make for smoother sailing if anything goes wrong later. Always view a property before you commit. Make sure you read the contract thoroughly before signing it. If you’re thinking about living in a private house, check out SouthWalesStudentPad.co.uk our free accommodation search service or contact estate agents and landlords directly.

22 / MONEY MANAGEMENT

MONEY MANAGEMENT Ok, now you’ve got an idea about where you’d like to live, let’s talk about the ‘M’ word. (Yep, money.)

STARTING UNIVERSITY OFTEN MEANS MANAGING YOUR FINANCES INDEPENDENTLY FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHICH CAN TAKE A BIT OF GETTING USED TO. BUT THERE’S LOTS OF SUPPORT OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP YOU BECOME A MONEY MANAGEMENT PRO.

KNOW YOUR INCOME AND OUTGOINGS It might seem boring, but you’ll thank yourself in the long run! Jot down all your income (student loan, scholarships, bursaries or grants, work wages, family support). Next, write down all your outgoings (rent, bills, subscriptions, memberships, petrol etc).

MAKE A BUDGET Once you’ve worked out how much you’ve got to live on every month, you can create a detailed budget. Decide how much you’ll spend on things like food, necessities, travel, (and fun stuff too). Budgeting apps like Wally or Money Dashboard Neon are handy and help you take control of your money.

USE A SAVINGS APP You might not have much spare cash to save but every penny counts. You can automatically save money without even noticing it by using apps like Plum or Moneybox.

BUY SECOND-HAND When you’re on a budget, marketplace websites and charity shops are your best friend! You’ll find loads of bargains so have a good rummage around before you buy something brand new.

BE A SAVVY SHOPPER Find out which stores offer student discount so you can make your pennies go further. Do your food shopping a bit later in the day, when the supermarkets are reducing food items. The Too Good To Go app is another way to buy perfectly edible supermarket/restaurant food for a fraction of the original price. Don’t forget to register for TOTUM – the UK’s #1 student discount and proof of age ID Card. Find out more at www.totum.com.

23 / MONEY MANAGEMENT

BE INTENTIONAL Before you spend your money, ask yourself whether you really need it. We’re not saying to do this all the time (where’s the fun in that?!). But it’s worth being intentional about what you’re spending money on, so you don’t end up wasting it.

USE OUR FREE RESOURCES We’ve got lots of support on our website that can help you with money management and budgeting. Search for ‘Cost of Living’ on the USW website. Also check out www.savethestudent.org to help you save money, find discounts, and get jobs.

SPEAK TO OUR STUDENT MONEY ADVICE TEAM We’re here for you every step of your university journey. If you need support with any of your student funding, be that scholarships and bursaries, your student loans and grants, managing your money or if you are in financial difficulty. To find out more about what we offer, take a look at our online prospectus or visit: www.southwales.ac.uk/money

That way, you’ll know exactly how much cash you have to splash on food. You can even use your budget to include things like takeaway coffees or meals out.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN Save some money by planning ahead. Creating a weekly or bi-weekly meal plan can help save you time, money, and energy. Yummly is a free app that helps you plan your meals. It’s also got over 2 million recipes.

If you’re looking to save, we recommend doing most of your cooking at home. (Of course, the odd meal out never hurts.)

MAKE IT FUN Cooking is all about bringing people together. So, why not take turns cooking for your flatmates? You can come up with themes like Meat-free Mondays or Taco Tuesdays to keep it interesting. Fun, cost-effective and tasty!

COOK IN BULK Save time and money by bulk cooking. Freeze portions so you can enjoy a quick and easy meal later.

26 / HEALTH AND WELLBEING

HEALTH AND WELLBEING It’s important to look after your mental and physical health at university. The first step is to figure out what boosts your sense of wellbeing and then build these activities into your new lifestyle and location.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR TOP WELLBEING TIPS:

MOVE YOUR BODY Whether it’s a rigorous workout at the gym, a Sunday morning yoga class, or a dance party in your kitchen – find something that makes you feel good. There are loads of clubs and societies that can help you get your body moving. Our Pontypridd campus gym offers a great range of facilities, with memberships from £13 per month for an all-inclusive fitness experience.

TAKE TIME TO CHECK IN Journal. Meditate. Pray. Bake. Colour in. Do something you enjoy and that helps you feel centred and calm.

TALK TO SOMEONE It’s always good to talk. That can mean talking about your feelings with a friend over a cuppa or speaking to a healthcare professional. The important thing is that you don’t keep things to yourself.

27 / HEALTH AND WELLBEING

REMEMBER TO BREATHE Focusing on your breathing can reduce feelings of stress and help you chill out. Box breath is an easy breathing practice that you can use anywhere, anytime. Inhale as you count to four – hold for four – exhale to the count of four.

EAT WELL You are what you eat so try and fuel your body with good, nutritious food. Lots of protein, fruit, leafy green veg, and healthy fats. Drink plenty of water and take vitamins or supplements if you need to.

GET QUALITY SLEEP Getting forty winks isn’t probably top of your agenda. But sleep is powerful. It affects everything from concentration to mood. Aim for 8 hours most nights and avoid looking at screens last thing before bed. Pace yourself during assignments and exam season so you aren’t pulling all-nighters.

OUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING SERVICES

WELLBEING AND DISABILITY SERVICES Open to all USW students, the team offers free advice and support on everything from physical and mental health to social welfare. You can book a Wellbeing Advice Appointment whenever you need us.

WORKSHOPS At USW we also run regular virtual workshops on a variety of wellbeing issues. To find out more or to book your space on a workshop, just search ‘Courses, Workshops & Events’ on the USW website.

28 / SAFETY AND SECURITY

SAFETY AND SECURITY Your safety is our priority. Here’s how we’re keeping you safe on campus.

OUR SECURITY SERVICES

24-HOUR SERVICE All of our accommodation is staffed 24-7 and has CCTV in operation.

ONLINE HALLS INDUCTION MEETING If you’re living at our Pontypridd campus accommodation, you’ll attend an online halls induction meeting as part of your license agreement. This covers all the key information on living in university halls and staying safe. This process will be very similar if you’re living at one of our selected private halls providers in Cardiff or Newport.

INSURANCE We’ve teamed up with Endsleigh, the leading student insurance provider in the UK, to arrange possessions insurance for students living at our Pontypridd campus. This covers gadgets, cars, travel and more. Check your policy details on the Endsleigh website to see what you’re covered for. Scan here to find out more about our Security Services.

If you opt to live in Cardiff or Newport, remember to check with your provider for up-to-date details of their insurance provision.

STAYING SAFE BEYOND CAMPUS

• Always be aware of your surroundings and take care of your belongings. Don’t let any of your friends go home by themselves on a night out, and make sure you always let someone know where you are.

THERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO TO KEEP YOURSELF, YOUR STUFF AND YOUR FRIENDS SAFE:

• There are loads of free apps that can help keep you safe. Safezone lets you raise alerts, check-in when working alone, connect with mental health resources, and receive important incident alerts. What3words lets you find, share, and save exact locations – handy if you ever get lost or separated from your friends.

29 / YOUR CONTRACT AND RIGHTS

YOUR CONTRACT AND RIGHTS Once you sign a contract with an accommodation provider, you’re legally tied into a property for a specified amount of time. This can make it difficult to get out of your contract or move house if your circumstances change. IT’S WORTH MAKING SURE EVERYTHING IS AS IT SHOULD BE BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE. HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER:

• Whether you choose to live in USW halls or in one of our partner halls run by a private provider, you will be entering into a legally binding rental agreement. Make sure you read the terms of the contract before you sign. If you are under the age of 18, the contract will also need to be countersigned by a parent or guardian. •F ind out if you can cancel your contract before you move in. •B e clear about upfront payments. Accommodation providers can charge a holding fee (up to a maximum of one week’s rent.) This must be either returned to you or offset against your first rental payment. If you pay a security reservation fee, it must legally be protected by a tenancy reservation fee scheme. •L ook for hidden charges such as residence fees, extra utilities or service charges. •G et your contract checked by the USW Student Advice Team for free. You can usually download and view a draft contract before you sign it. If not, ask for a copy and contact us for a free contract check. Make sure you have read and understood everything before you sign. •C heck the property is accredited under one of the National Codes and find out who is responsible for managing it. The National Code of Standards is a set of specific standards that apply to larger student developments. It makes sure students have safe and secure accommodation, resolves any problems, and is supported by the National Union of Students (NUS). Find out more at www.nationalcode.org. •R efer to the Student Accommodation Code as it protects your rights to having a safe and good quality place to live. Find out more at www.thesac.org.uk.

CAN I REQUEST A ROOM BASED ON MY PERSONAL PREFERENCES? Yes, you can. We have a range of accommodation options such as accessible rooms, Welsh-speaking, single gender, alcohol free and quiet flats. Let us know your preferences when you submit your application, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. WWW.SOUTHWALES.AC.UK/ACCOMMODATION

FEES AND PAYMENTS

DO I NEED TO PAY A RESERVATION FEE? Yes. You’ll need to pre-pay £200 to secure your accommodation. This amount will be taken off your overall fee.

HOW DO I PAY FOR MY ACCOMMODATION? If you opt for a place in USW-owned accommodation, the total annual rental amount is split into three easy payments over the academic year. If you choose to live in one of our partner halls that are operated by private providers, the process is likely to be very similar. Further details of what to pay and when will be provided at the time your room offer is confirmed.

WHAT DOES MY RENT INCLUDE? Your room, Wi-Fi and all your utility bills (electricity, heating and water) are included in your rent. If you’re living at our Pontypridd campus, you’ll also have access to our ResiLife programme. See page 16 for details.

WILL I NEED TO PAY FOR A TV LICENCE? If you’re planning on watching TV, you’ll need to buy a licence.

MOVING IN

WHEN CAN I MOVE INTO HALLS? If you opt for a place in USW-owned accommodation, we often stagger start dates to ensure a smooth moving-in process. We’ll email you all the information in the weeks before your contract begins. If you choose to live in one of our partner halls that are operated by private providers, the process is likely to be very similar. Your provider will confirm moving in dates in plenty of notice.

CAN I CHANGE STUDENT ACCOMMODATION? If you aren’t happy with where you live, please let us, or your private provider know us as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to move you somewhere else.

LIVING IN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

WHAT IS PROVIDED TO STUDENTS LIVING IN HALLS? The benefits of living in halls are that the price that you pay is all inclusive – covering utilities, Wi-Fi, maintenance and a 24-hour security service. Depending on where you choose to live and what room type you choose will determine exactly what furniture is provided, but as standard all rooms will have a bed, desk and chair, storage space, and if en-suite, a shower/wet room, toilet and sink. The use of a shared kitchen is also provided so you can cook up a tasty meal or make a quick beans on toast!

41 / FAQs

IS THERE ANY ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES OR CHRONIC ILLNESS? Please let us know if you need any support to live in accommodation. We work closely with the USW Wellbeing and Disability Team to make sure you’re well-supported and have a fantastic student experience.

DO I HAVE TO BE HOME BY A CERTAIN TIME EACH NIGHT? No, you’re free to come and go as you please.

CAN I BRING A BIKE? Sure! There’s bike storage in halls where you can keep it free of charge. We suggest bringing a bike lock with you.

CAN I BRING A CAR? Yes. If you live at our Pontypridd campus, you’ll need to apply for a residential parking pass. These are usually in high demand so parking options may be limited. If you’re living in Cardiff or Newport, you’ll need to organise your own parking permit. It’s a good idea to research the costs beforehand as parking passes can be expensive.

CAN I HAVE OVERNIGHT GUESTS? Of course, you can have someone to stay for up to three nights a month. You’ll have to sign them in. All your guests must comply with the type of flat you live in. For example, if you live in a female-only flat, your overnight guest should be female.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF A STUDENT ACCOMMODATION CONTRACT? When you sign up for a room, either with USW or a private provider, you’re entering a legally binding contract. It will specify how you can be released from a contract without being charged. Check out page 29 for further details.

THE HOLIDAYS AND END OF TENANCY

DO I NEED TO EMPTY MY ROOM OVER A HOLIDAY PERIOD? Not over the Easter and Christmas period. However, you’ll need to clear out your room before the summer holidays unless you have a 51-week contract or an agreed extension.

CAN I STAY IN HALLS OVER THE SUMMER? Yes, if you have a 51-week contract or an extension, you can stay in halls over the summer holidays. If you apply for an extension, this will incur an additional cost.

DO I NEED TO CLEAN MY ACCOMMODATION WHEN I MOVE OUT? Yes, you’ll need to clear all your belongings out of your bedroom and communal spaces. Accommodation should be clean and tidy before you leave.
