THE UEA PIONEER FUND

MAKING AN ENDOWED GIFT

£10m Pioneer Fund fundraising target by 2030

Karen Jones studied at UEA from 1975 to 1979 and was co-founder of Café Rouge.

A GIFT THAT L ASTS FOREVER UEA’s Chancellor on our new endowment fund for donors looking to the future. What’s your passion in the world? Making society fairer through access to education? Global food security? Better treatments for cruel diseases? Donations to the University of East Anglia help fund our life-changing work and tackle the world’s great challenges. But what if your gift could keep on giving – making a difference not only this year, but every year?

Introducing the Pioneer Fund. UEA’s philanthropic endowment brings together donors like you, who share an extraordinary vision. Find out in the coming pages how the UEA Pioneer Fund could help your gift, and your passion, last forever. Thank you so very much. Karen Jones CBE (EAS75) Chancellor, UEA 02

The Pioneer Fund allows your generosity to make a more significant impact over time. In the coming pages, you’ll read more about how an endowment fund works and meet some of the generous philanthropists already supporting the UEA Pioneer Fund.

What are endowed gifts? Regular charitable donations are put to work straight away at UEA supporting research, teaching, scholarships and student experience. But endowed gifts, such as those to the Pioneer Fund, invest your donation as a capital sum instead. The annual growth made on the long-term investment is used to support activities on campus each year. Meanwhile, the original funds are left untouched so they can continue to grow long into the future. Gifts of any size can therefore go on to make a tremendous difference over time – from a legacy gift in your will or a capital donation now. That’s why giving to the Pioneer Fund is one of the most powerful ways to make a lasting difference at UEA. 04

The UEA campus also provides natural surroundings for quiet study and reflection.

How is the Pioneer Fund managed? The Pioneer Fund is invested on a long-term, ‘low risk with growth’ policy by an independent investment management firm, mostly in equities, gilts or bonds, and property. This ensures that gifts are protected from short-term fluctuations in the markets, whilst delivering meaningful returns to support UEA’s lifechanging work. We aim to generate at least 4% net growth each year after fees, and hopefully more. The fund is invested in line with the University’s strict ethical and environmental investment policy criteria and is closely monitored by the UEA Chief Resource Officer, Finance Division and Finance Committee. 06

Can I choose what my gift helps achieve? As with all donations to UEA, gifts to the Pioneer Fund can fund a specific goal, such as scholarships or research, or can provide general support where the need is greatest. The Development Office can provide help and guidance on how best to achieve your personal aims. Perhaps you are interested in endowing a creative writing scholarship, funding life-saving cancer research or building the next centre of excellence at UEA? If you would prefer to make your gift unrestricted, it will be utilised to support student hardship, scholarships, access to academic resources and campus development. Students across the University will feel the benefit of your generosity forever. 08

How does the Pioneer Fund increase the impact of my gift? Naturally, that will depend on the scale of the capital sum donated to the fund, and the fund performance over time. But in principle, a £250,000 capital gift to the fund will generate a £10,000 annual donation, in perpetuity. As the fund grows, we hope that growth will exceed the annual sum drawn – meaning that balances will grow significantly and create an even greater impact at UEA. Can I leave a gift to the Pioneer Fund in my will? We would be honoured and grateful to know that UEA is part of your plans. Gifts in wills, as well as those made in memory of a loved one, are an ideal way to make your legacy last forever. Please get in touch with the Development Office if you would like to discuss your wishes for future generations. 10

Managing Partner and Founder of Indus Capital Partners. David has 30 years of experience in the financial sector. David joined the Pioneer Fund to endow the Kowitz Scholarship for students on MA Creative Writing (Prose Fiction). “My time at UEA was defining. It was here I met Sarah, my wife, and together we’ve loved being a part of the alumni community. It’s now my absolute pleasure to provide a leadership gift to the Pioneer Fund and continue to support our family scholarship for ever.” 11

NEIL PETTIFER (EUR75)

Owned a property business in Spain, where he lived and organised UEA alumni reunions. Neil joined the Pioneer Fund through a gift from his estate left to UEA in his will. UEA gratefully received a major capital donation from the will of our late alumnus Neil Pettifer, who was an active member of the University’s alumni community. His generous gift has been invested in the Pioneer Fund and will support students for many, many generations to come. 12

Now I am thrilled to honour her by allowing many others to come to UEA and study the science of water, and hopefully help make the world a better place.”

YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL David Richardson, UEA’s Vice-Chancellor, on how your gift will inspire generations. Since 1963, UEA has consistently broken new ground in education and research.
