Women Who Made a Difference.

The book is about 3 women who fought for gender and racial equality and disabled people rights.

Gertrude Bell: Gertrude Bell was a very intelligent woman; she enjoyed studying and reading. She went to Lady Margaret Hall, a women´s college at Oxford. At first, male students and teachers in Oxford ignored her but when she took part in college debates, they realized that she was very smart. She worked for British Intelligence and she also became one of the most important advisors of the King of Iraq, that´s why people called her “The Uncrowned Queen of Iraq”.

Hellen Keller: Hellen Keller is a very good example of strength. She was a disabled woman; she was blind and deaf. Her illness didn´t stop her from studying; she wanted to go to Harvard but women weren´t allowed to study there so she went to Radcliffe, a women´s university next to Harvard. She was the first blind person to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree. She established a fund called “Hellen Keller International” that stills operates today and fights against diseases. She met all the USA presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to John F Kennedy, and convinced them to improve disabled people rights.

Rosa Parks: Rosa Parks was a black woman; she grew up hoping that someday, people would have equal rights no matter the colour of their skin, but this was hard because on those days, a racist terrorist group called Ku Klux Klan was becoming very popular. Rosa is known because she refused to give her seat on a bus to a group of white people. She fought for equal opportunities for everyone, she became an icon of the Civil Rights Movement and was presented the Congressional Gold Medal.

She also met many famous people like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Nelson Mandela, who told her that thinking about her encouraged him during his jail sentence.

Personal opinion I loved the book. I like books that talk about people who made a difference in society and who changed the way of thinking of many people. The fact that the people in this book were all women is what I like the most; females have always been oppressed in some way and learning that these strong women fought for equal rights and opportunities for everyone gives me hope that someday the world will be a better place.
