UNICEF High School Clubs

MARCH 2015 NEWSLETTER The UNICEF Tap Project UNICEF works in over 100 countries to improve water supplies and sanitation facilities in schools, communities, and emergency situations. Since 2007, UNICEF Tap Project volunteers have helped millions of children worldwide gain access to clean drinking water. See the one pager to learn more. Here’s how your club can get involved in the UNICEF Tap Project:  Take the challenge to put down your smartphone. Every 15 minutes you go without your smartphone while running the UNICEF Tap Project mobile experience gives one day of clean water for a child in need.  Host a water walk. Students can walk around campus with jerry cans that are filled with water to simulate the way those in developing countries walk to and gather water for cooking, drinking, and washing. There can be educational signs posted about water along the walk.  Join us for the Tap Project webinar on Tuesday, March 3rd from 7:00 to 8:00pm EST.  Be on the lookout for our new videos on club best practices on Facebook and Twitter!  Organize a fundraiser for the UNICEF Tap Project. See the fundraising toolkit for ideas.  Write an op-ed in your school newspaper or community blog to educate people on how UNICEF promotes water access and sanitation. Utilize TeachUNICEF resources to find more information.

Collaborate with Other Clubs! World Water Month is the perfect season for hosting fundraisers and for collaborating with other clubs. Here’s how you can collaborate with other schools:  Find clubs by checking out our interactive map of UNICEF clubs. Once you know with whom you want to collaborate with, email your National Council member for contact info.  Check out our how-to collaborate guide. Be on the lookout for the March activities calendar, which will soon be on the lower right hand side of our website.

Mesquite High School’s booth to recruit more members!

St. Mark's School of Texas hosted a screening and discussion of Not My Life to raise awareness of human trafficking. They started with some trivia and then watched the film and finished with a discussion!

Northwest High School hosted their annual “Raindrop Project.” Members created paper raindrops saying “Water is ___________.” On the blank, students wrote down what water means to them and then taped their raindrops to a wall. The collage was a sight to see!

Leadership Transitions

Strongville High School handcrafted pen roses for their local Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center using only duct tape! Middlesex County Academy decided to start a social media campaign where students write down what they believe children deserve on a whiteboard and share it on Facebook!

It’s time to start thinking about leadership transitions for your club! Some best practices include creating an application and organizing interviews, hosting training sessions, and having the new board shadow the old board. Need advice? Email us!
