Caracterização artística e arquitectónica Art and Architecture O projecto inicial deste edifício, traçado pelo arquitecto Lucínio Guia da Cruz de acordo com uma gramática moderna e classicizante, acabaria por sofrer algumas alterações impostas pelo arquitecto Cristino da Silva. A vincada austeridade e uniformidade das formas arquitectónicas foram atenuadas em determinados sectores com a aplicação de elaborados conjuntos escultóricos e pictóricos. Ergue-se, no cunhal do lado poente do edifício, um grupo escultórico da autoria de Leopoldo de Almeida, representando a figura alegórica da Medicina ladeada por Hipócrates e Galeno. Nos dois portais da fachada principal do edifício, destacam-se os doze bustos de Euclides Vaz. Os diversos portões foram ornamentados com pequenos bronzes alusivos à história da própria faculdade. No átrio poente encontra-se o baixo-relevo de Vasco Pereira da Conceição alusivo ao tratamento dos doentes, enquanto no nascente, figura o fresco de Portela Júnior, dedicado à história da Medicina. Adornando a entrada do Instituto de Medicina Legal estão dois baixos-relevos da autoria de Numídico Bessone, personificando a Morte e a Vida.

Lucínio Guia da Cruz was the architect responsible for the initial design, in a modern style of classical inspiration, but the plan suffered some later alterations, introduced by architect Cristino da Silva. The austerity and uniformity of the building were mitigated in certain areas with the setting of elaborate sculptural and pictorial ensembles. On the western corner of the building is a sculptural ensemble by Leopoldo de Almeida, which represents the allegorical ﬁgure of Medicine ﬂanked by Hippocrates and Galen. On both portals of the main façade of the building, the twelve busts created by Euclides Vaz stand out. The various gates were also decorated with small bronze sculptures alluding to the history of the faculty. In the western atrium there is a bas-relief by Vasco Pereira da Conceição, on the theme of the treatment of the sick, and in the eastern atrium a fresco by Portela Júnior on the history of Medicine. The entrance to the Legal Medicine Institute is decorated with two bas-reliefs by Numídico Bessone, representing Death and Life.

Proposta de Intervenção Proposed Intervention O edifício albergará, de acordo com o Plano de Pormenor da Alta Universitária, diversos programas, incluindo funções comerciais associadas à vida universitária e outros serviços. Também de acordo com o referido Plano, o edifício deverá permitir a utilização e usufruto do pátio central, ao nível da Rua Larga. Assim, será necessário cobrir na sua quase totalidade o estacionamento existente no piso inferior. Essa solução permitirá a utilização de uma nova plataforma para espaço de animação e utilização púbica.
