YUKON/ UNB PARTNERSHIP TO OFFER VIRTUAL DEGREE PROGRAM TO YUKON NURSES

The Yukon government partnered with the University of New Brunswick’s (UNB) Faculty of Nursing to offer UNB’s “Learn Where You Live” program to licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in the Yukon. This unique pathway program allows LNPs to continue working in the Yukon while pursuing a bachelor of nursing degree (BN) through virtual learning.

“UNB is committed to developing impactful programs that make a difference in New Brunswick, in Canada and around the world. The LPN to BN pathway partnership with the Government of the Yukon will provide them with much needed nurses by developing the workforce they already have in place,” said President and Vice Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick Dr. Paul Mazerolle.

POND-DESHPANDE CENTRE TO SUPPORT HOUSING RETENTION IN MONCTON

The Pond-Deshpande Centre (PDC) at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) announced the launch of a transformative Innovation Challenge aimed at supporting housing retention for individuals transitioning from homelessness to stable housing in Moncton. This Innovation Challenge, which launched at the end of July and will run for 100 days, brings together key stakeholders to address critical health and support needs through innovative and collaborative approaches.

The need for this project began with the nursing faculty contacting Mayor Dawn Arnold to help the city with the housing crisis’s impact on health care. Mayor Dawn Arnold and Dean Lorna Butler have championed this initiative leading to the 100-day challenge. The challenge started with a summer launch workshop in Moncton, where participants set their goals and developed a comprehensive work plan. Participants, spanning the nonprofit sector, healthcare, academia and various government departments such as Social Development and the Department of Health, as well as Addictions & Mental Health specialists, were recruited for their expertise on the issue of homelessness.

Nurse Practitioner and former UNB Faculty of Nursing Teaching Professor Sharon Hamilton was elected as incoming President of the Nurse Practitioners of New Brunswick. Congratulations Sharon!

RECOGNITION

DR. KELLY SCOTT-STOREY AWARDED UNB AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH

Dr. Kelly Scott-Storey received the UNB Award for Excellence in Research on Thursday, Oct. 24. Dr. Scott-Storey is a professor and the assistant dean of the bachelor of nursing program and the UNBHumber Collaborative bachelor of nursing program in the faculty of nursing at the University of New Brunswick.

through adulthood, whether as a target or perpetrator.

Dr. Scott-Storey’s groundbreaking research has redefined how violence is conceptualized and measured in health research. Her work has shed light on the fact that traditional approaches to measuring violence, which often focus on single forms of victimization at a single point in time, do not fully capture the complexity of violence experiences across the lifespan. To address this, Dr. Scott-Storey developed the Cumulative Lifetime Violence Severity measure, a tool that tracks the interconnection of multiple violent experiences from childhood

In addition to her work on violence measurement, Dr. Scott-Storey has been instrumental in developing the Composite Abuse Scale Revised Short Form, a widely used measure of intimate partner violence (IPV) in national surveys. Her leadership on the iHEAL program, a nurse-led health promotion intervention for women experiencing IPV, has led to significant advances in addressing violence in Canada, including the development of the iHEAL app, a bilingual resource to help Canadian women who have experienced abuse from a past or current partner be well and stay safe.

Dr. Scott-Storey’s work has earned her numerous accolades, including a Fellowship with the Canadian Academy of Nursing.

HIGHLIGHTING DR. JASON HICKEY INNOVATION

Dr. Jason Hickey’s work was highlighted in the UNB blog: UNB’s New Brunswick Institute for Research, Data and Training and Indigenous Research Chair in Nursing.

Dr. Jason Hickey, partnered with the Under One Sky Friendship Centre to investigate the medium-and long-term benefits of their Aboriginal Head Start in Urban and Northern Communities program for children and their families.

AWARD NOMINATION

The UNB Faculty of Nursing Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation (IVRS) Project Team was nominated for the 2024 SIM

Innovator Award.

They were recognized for pioneering the integration of immersive virtual reality simulation (IVRS) in nursing education through the Learn Where You Live program, enhancing access for remote learners, providing real-time feedback in clinical training, expanding the program to include partnerships with the Yukon Territory, and demonstrating a commitment to ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational outcomes.

Peer Assisted Learning leader Casey Flanagan (Year 2 BN student) worked with the Year 1 Nursing students in weekly tutorial sessions for their Human Anatomy course. While this is a completely voluntary weekly tutoring session, a consistent group of approximately 30 students attended every week, with many more joining prior to the midterm and the final exam.
