PRESIDENT HIGHLIGHTS FACULTY OF NURSING NEWS

The work and accomplishments of the UNB Faculty of Nursing were once again recognized and featured in the UNB President’s newsletter. Notably, President Mazerolle’s comment, “Our faculty play a significant role in driving innovation in health care, contributing to advancements in treatments, technologies and patient care practices. As educators, they influence the next generation of health care professionals, shaping the future of the nursing profession through their knowledge and mentorship” exemplifies the Faculty of Nursing’s commitment and efforts to address and advance our academic plan.

SHANNEX AND UNB PARTNER FOR AGING RESEARCH AND NURSING EDUCATION

Shannex and UNB have signed a $1 million partnership agreement to expand education and research in the field of life transitions and older adult care.

Half of Shannex’s strategic investment – $500,000 – will be used to establish the Shannex Research Chair in Aging Transitions as part of UNB’s Integrated Health Initiative (IHI).

Shannex will provide $400,000 to UNB’s Faculty of Nursing

in Fredericton to support the development of a Shannex LongTerm Care Summer Institute and a new Care of the Older Adult certificate program.

A further $100,000 will be dedicated to the construction of a Shannex Aging Transitions Lab in the soon to be completed Health and Social Innovation Centre (HSIC) on UNB’s Saint John campus to support the work of the chair and the interdisciplinary research team the chair will lead.

newsletter included the UNB-MAHE Summer Institute and visit from Manipal students, faculty, and other delegates including the Consul General of India, Siddhartha Nath. President Mazerolle also featured the Nursing Education Design Summit, which was led by the UNB Faculty of Nursing and brought a range of university, government, and community stakeholders to examine and envision the– BN student and RN role in long-term care. Possibilities for a mentorship program that would better prepare and motivate students toward careers in long-term care.

The UNB and Shannex partnership for aging research and nursing education was also recognized.

NURSING EDUCATION DESIGN SUMMIT

In May 2024, the UNB Faculty of Nursing hosted a Nursing Education Design Summit. This two-day event brought together a range of stakeholders including educators, policy makers, and long-term care directors to discuss how to best prepare BN students for careers in the long-term care sector. Based on the aging population nationally and in New Brunswick, care of the older adult in community and in long-term care settings is of critical importance and will require leadership among nurses and allied health professionals.

The Nursing Education Design Summit facilitated discussion of challenges and opportunities related to older adult health including opportunities within nursing education that can lay the groundwork for innovative and compassionate care of older adults and careers in long-term care.

The UNB Fredericton Downtown Community Health Centre (FDCHC) Nurse Practitioner Pilot Project, launched more than a year ago, continues to serve an identified need in the UNB community. The project supports increased access to episodic primary health care and other health related resources for UNB faculty, staff and dependents who do not have a primary health care provider and are registered with Patient Connect NB.

MANIPAL NURSES VISIT UNB

The Faculty of Nursing hosted seven nursing students from India, providing them with the chance to gain clinical experience in a New Brunswick healthcare facility and an opportunity to explore what the province has to offer. The MAHE students were welcomed at a ceremony on June 17 at the Harriet Irving Library on the Fredericton campus. This visit is part of an innovative partnership between UNB and MAHE, in which students earn a dual nursing degree,
