SPRING 2013
PRESIDENT’S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear UMW Neighbor, The start of the spring semester is a special time, as both a new year and a new academic session begin. New beginnings are an opportunity to celebrate past successes and exciting prospects to come. As the University of Mary Washington launches into 2013, we reflect on our core principles of honor, leadership, and service. It is my pleasure to announce the opening of the Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service at UMW, a concept created to bring greater focus and coherence to the development and recognition of these values. As community members, you are welcome to take part in our service activities by attending one of the many Community Outreach and Resources events detailed in this newsletter. Service is an excellent way for the University of Mary Washington to engage with our neighbors and give back to the community. I also want to invite you to take advantage of the many wonderful lectures, arts performances, exhibits, and athletics events on campus during the spring semester. The ever-popular Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, beginning its 10th season in January, is one highlight of the spring semester. The series presents biographical sketches of leaders and public figures from history. It brings nationally and internationally acclaimed authors to UMW for outstanding programs, which are offered free of charge to members of the community. It is always a pleasure to see you on the Fredericksburg campus. I hope to see you often throughout the coming months. Sincerely,
Richard V. Hurley President
