LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to another edition of the Organizational Studies Newsletter. As you will see in the pages that follow, great things continue to happen in our program.

Our plans to grow are in full swing. Last year, we welcomed a new faculty member, Jeremy Levine (a Michigan alumnus), who immediately filled an important gap by teaching our highly-demanded course on non-profit organizations. This year, we hired two new faculty members, Ashley Harrell and Steven Samford, who are joining us this fall. Ashley’s focus is on leadership, while Steve’s interests lie in global entrepreneurship, both of which will allow us to expand our offerings on these topics. We also welcomed two new staff members: Daniel Hartlep, our new student services assistant (who came on board in the fall), and Elizabeth Cain-Toth, in our newly-created position of events and publicity coordinator (who joined us in January). We hope to begin increasing our number of students over the next couple of years, taking care that we preserve, at all costs, the quality of the program by concurrently increasing the number of both faculty and staff as well. We have the full support of the LSA administration in this process, and we are confident that OS will emerge even stronger as a result.

We admitted another outstanding class of students this year, who will join the program in the fall. As with all of our cohorts, this group has distinguished itself in the classroom, and throughout the campus and beyond. Our new class is among the most diverse that we’ve had, but we continue our efforts to increase the diversity of our student body. Our faculty and current students logged numerous accomplishments as well. We are especially proud that Sara Soderstrom received the Individual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education, for her extraordinary teaching. All of our staff and faculty are responsible for the fact that OS continues to score near the top in College surveys of student satisfaction with their major. A further reason for our success is the generous support of our alumni, which allows us to fund internships, study abroad experiences, and aid for students experiencing sudden financial difficulty. The Malkin Family Mentorship Program, which has provided opportunities for our students to “shadow” our alumni at their workplaces, continues to thrive, with 28 students having now participated.

Perhaps our biggest piece of news is our move to the eighth floor of the newly-designed Weiser Hall. Some of us had an opportunity to tour the facility earlier this spring, and the beauty of our space was fully evident. Especially impressive is the atrium, which occupies two full stories, enclosed on two sides by floor-to-ceiling glass. The view is spectacular. We moved into the space in mid-August. Our students, staff, and faculty will love it, and we hope that you will visit when you’re in town.

I want to again thank all the members of our community—our fabulous students, our dedicated faculty and staff, the members of our Leadership Committee, the College and University administrations, and all of our alumni—for making Organizational Studies the best program of its kind in the country. We are strong, and will grow even stronger, because of you.

Visit our website to see how you can stay involved with OS! Be sure to click on the Alumni Gallery (https://lsa.umich.edu/ orgstudies/alumni.html).

NEW TO THE CREW

Ashley Harrell is a sociologist whose work is centered largely on structural and social-psychological solutions to problems of cooperation, collective action, and social order. One key area of her research looks at the dynamics of leadership, power, and influence in groups, with a focus on the social-psychological forces that both 1) promote “good leadership” and 2) allow groups and organizations to successfully meet their goals. Ashley also studied the mechanisms by which interpersonal moral judgments, religion, and social networks produce cooperation, generosity, and solidarity in groups.

Prior to joining Michigan, she earned a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of South Carolina, where she worked and conducted experiments in the Laboratory for Sociological Research. Ashley’s research has recently been published in Social Forces, Social Science Research, Scientific Reports, and other journals.

Steven Samford studies organizations and the political economy of development, primarily concentrating on the developing world. He focuses on how the interactions between state bureaucracies (such as innovation agencies or regulators) and businesses and business organizations affect technology diffusion and adoption. His papers have appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Politics & Society, Studies in Comparative International Development, and Business & Politics, among others. Prior to coming to the University of Michigan, he held research fellowships at the University of Toronto and University of Notre Dame. He has degrees from Reed College (BA) and the University of New Mexico (PhD).

NEW TO THE CREW S T A

Elizabeth oversees websites, provides event support, and develops publicity and marketing materials for both the Organizational Studies Program (OS) and the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI).

An energetic and enthusiastic leader, Elizabeth brings 15 years of events and marketing experience to this position. She’s excited to share her widespread skill set, keen eye for detail and gregarious nature with both BLI and OS.

Brand new to the University of Michigan, Elizabeth looks forward to this fresh environment of working with students, faculty and staff to support the mission and growth of each unit.

FFDan works on recruitment of prospective students, assists faculty with curricular needs, and does some event planning. After working for two semesters in the Psychology Office as a Student Academic Advisor, he made it a goal to continue working for U-M when starting his career search after graduation. He is ecstatic to work first-hand with students and do whatever he can to make their education at Michigan as fulfilling as his was.

Outside of his interest in Student Affairs, Daniel has been involved with Child Development Research and is hoping that his work gets published very soon. He has dreams of getting his Ph.D. in Psychology in the distant future, or maybe becoming a full-time Academic Advisor for a University.

AWARDS RECOGNITION&

OS had much to celebrate in 2016-2017! Our OS community made a difference on many fronts, and in many cases we were recognized for our efforts.

Professor Elizabeth Armstrong received a Faculty Recognition Award, which recognizes a mid-career faculty member who has demonstrated remarkable contributions to the University through outstanding achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors; excellence as a teacher, advisor and mentor; and distinguished participation in the service activities of the University and elsewhere.

Ian Bunting (OS degree expected December ‘17) was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team.

Assistant Professor Michael Heaney received the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Outstanding Research Mentor Award and was nominated for the Golden Apple Award.

Assistant Professor Jeremy Levine was also nominated for the Golden Apple Award.

Zach Miller (OS ‘17), one of this year’s peer mentors, received the OS Spirit Award. The award is given to someone dedicated to the area of student services and the development of a close-knit OS community.

OS Director Mark Mizruchi received the Charles Horton Cooley Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Sociology, awarded by the Michigan Sociological Association in October 2016.

Kate Ruehrdanz (OS degree expected August ‘17) received the Andy Lansing Award for her demonstrated academic excellence in the classroom and leadership qualities in the OS program.

Florence Rivkin (OS ‘17) received the OS Jordan Harris Social Justice Award for her commitment to social justice through volunteer work, academic commitment, and political engagement.

Assistant Professor Sara Soderstrom received the 2016 LSA Individual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.

Seven members of the OS ‘17 class were inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society.

OS STUDENT LEADERSHIP

OS students tend to juggle many balls academically, with double (sometimes even triple!) majors and minors. They “balance” this with heavy engagement in campus life beyond the classroom as well. Students choose from a wide variety of organizations ranging from Greek life to Relay for Life, from K-Grams (serving elementary education) to professional student organizations like Michigan Pre-Law. They also choose many social justice activities through the Ginsberg Center, Michigan Community Scholars Program and the Peace Neighborhood Center. Additionally, they support the investment in their future through employment.

The 2017 legacy project of this year’s peer mentors, Gabrielle Dompierre and Zach Miller, was the creation of a self-editable, interactive web page to locate individual students’ pathways.

Each OS student now has a personal profile page on the OS website. These pages not only display their pathway but are also places to post resumes and other accomplishments to help with their recruitment for internships and jobs.

Once OS settles into the new space in Weiser Hall, an interactive touch screen will be installed for students to explore current student pathways. The Peer Mentors will also have a laptop to assist in their peer advising and help students navigate through the pathways.

Thank you to Zach and Gabrielle for their vision, hard work, and dedication to this project!

LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES

OS provides students with opportunities for leadership as well. The 2015 peer mentors, Jenna Fiore and Anna Moloney, completed a legacy project creating an extensive infrastructure that enables more students to work within the program. As a result of their thoughtful work, OS now has three committees in addition to peer mentor leadership: event planning, recruitment, and social media. Every fall, students are invited to submit applications for these paid positions in addition to two to three additional positions to serve as student representatives at the OS Leadership Committee meeting and the joint faculty/staff meeting.

EVENT COMMITTEE

RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE SOCIAL MEDIA COMMITTEE

Planned and executed events throughout the year including OS 15th birthday party, Zingerman’s dinner, a Ronald McDonald House volunteer event, Afternoon Delight brunch welcoming new OS’ers, and the end of year - Senior Let’s get Disorganized event.

Coordinated panelists for fall and winter Info Nights, presented at social science first-year seminars and in dorms, sent announcements to OS pre-requisite courses and to Newnan advising center, and did outreach to targeted organizations (CSP, First Gen, Blavin and Shipman Scholars, MESA). Their biggest highlight was creating a new video of current students sharing their experience in the program!

Increased OS’s Social Media presence on both Instagram and Facebook through features like #AlumSpotlight, #StaffSpotlight, #ThrowbackThursday, along with up-to-the-minute OS news and events. This year’s lead also created a Snapchat Geofilter for the Ruthven offices!

HONORS RESEARCH

The Organizational Studies Honors Program is designed to enable OS students to gain experience in the design, implementation, and analysis of research on organizations and organizational behavior. Honors students collaborate directly with a faculty mentor to complete an original research project. For students with strong academic records and an interest in research, the honors program serves as a capstone for their undergraduate studies and as important preparation for graduate studies or other future endeavors.

On April 19, 2017, Organizational Studies hosted its annual Honors Symposium. This year, three honors students formally presented their research to fellow students, faculty, staff, and family.

This past year, OS had several students that were notable for their accomplishments beyond their academic pursuits.

Becky Bereswill (OS ‘16 graduate) Disney on Ice Figure Skater

Becky is a recent OS honors graduate, and before that was a talented amateur figure skater. She got the call from Disney in 2014, at the end of her junior year in OS, offering her the amazing opportunity to originate the role of Elsa in the Disney on Ice production of “Frozen.” She took a leave of absence from OS to tour the U.S. with Disney on Ice, also appearing on Good Morning America and other national media outlets. She returned to U-M and OS in the summer of 2016, and completed her honors degree in December. She was able to join the European tour of “Frozen” for a short time before starting her job in Texas as a Management Consulting Analyst for Accenture.

Heather is an OS honors graduate and dual degree graduate with the School of Music, Theater, & Dance (music education and violin performance). Even before graduating, she joined the SMTD staff as the Program Director for the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. While completing her studies, she also found

Notable OSers

2016 — 2017

Congratulations to all these talented OSers (and many others past and present too numerous to highlight here)!

Ian Bunting (OS rising senior) Tight End, U-M Football Team

Ian is the first varsity football player to major in OS! He is a two-year letterman, having started 7 games and appeared in 23, with a career-best performance in the Orange Bowl last December. While we all enjoy watching his athletic prowess on the football field, he is equally talented in the classroom, and was named an Academic All-Big Ten honoree last Fall. In addition to his athletic and academic commitments, Ian has also successfully launched an entrepreneurial venture as co-founder of the Valiant Clothing and Apparel company.

Jathan Malik (OS rising senior) U-M Men’s Tennis Team

Jathan is the first varsity tennis player to major in OS! For the 2016-17 season (his final season), Jathan competed at the #1 Singles and #1 Doubles positions. Last fall, Jathan and doubles partner Kevin Wong won the title at the regional ITA tournament and then made a run all the way to the semi-finals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. After a successful regular season campaign, the U-M Team received an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament in Stanford, CA, making it to the second round before falling to Stanford. UM’s 23 wins this season are the third best total in school history.

Heather Kendrick (OS ‘16 graduate) 2017 Miss Michigan

time to compete and be crowned in the Miss Michigan scholarship pageant, and will soon vie for the Miss America title in September in Atlantic City. And this is not the OS Program’s first success in the pageant world! Heather hopes to follow in the footsteps of OS alumna Gina Valo (’06), who held the Miss Michigan title in 2007.

Gifts and Pledges to the Organizational Studies Program

5/1/16 - 4/30/17

We deeply appreciate the gifts and pledges made this year by our donors. Gifts made this year have helped to secure the existence of the Program by sustaining the Director’s Strategic Fund. Gifts provided many internship and study abroad opportunities; other gifts made the difference in helping students in need or honoring those who have demonstrated leadership. Donations from alumni and friends of the program provide funding for numerous talks and workshops, and help to fund graduation and other community-building events between students and alumni. The Program could not offer any of these exciting opportunities for students without the generosity and support of our donors.

WE HAVE MOVED AGAIN

We are excited to announce that our department moved to a new location in Weiser Hall. Our old suite in Ruthven Museum served us well, and we made great memories there, but we couldn’t be more excited about our new space.

Weiser Hall, located in the heart of central campus at the University of Michigan, is home to a number of interdisciplinary and internationally-focused units within LSA, and will be a center for active and engaged learning. Formerly the Dennison Building, Weiser Hall was renamed in 2014 in recognition of U-M alumni and donors Ronald and Eileen Weiser.

Weiser Hall will be an active, tech-enabled hub that encourages different types of interaction across groups of people, geography, and disciplines, offering new opportunities to students. If you’re in the area, feel free to stop in and say hi!
