Celebrating our Achievements The Department of Neurology, continues to strive to be a leader in neurological care, discovery and teaching. Through the challenges of 2020 we continued to transform lives for many of those suffering with Stroke, Headaches, ALS, Parkinson’s, MS, Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders, Epilepsy, Brain Tumor and other neurological disorders.

We want to share some of them:


Clinical Care Achievements n

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY expanded to include 105 faculty members in 15 divisions. Physicians offered advanced medical care via telehealth and in person, conducting almost 53,000 patient visits, extending the power of academic medicine into your homes and communities.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY physicians lead and serve at: • Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Primary Stroke Center at UHealth Tower and Jackson South Medical Center • FL DOH Level 1 Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital • Level 4 Epilepsy Center recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers • A Parkinson’s Disease Center of Excellence as designated by the Parkinson Foundation • A Parkinson’s Information and Referral Center designated by APDA (American Parkinson’s Disease Association) • A Tourette Association of America Center of Excellence • A Treatment Center for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in South Florida designated by the State of Florida Department of Health performing gene therapy • ALS Center of Excellence certified by the ALS Association • MS Center of Excellence designated by the National MS Society • Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence designated by the Huntington Society of America • Lewy Body Dementia Center of Excellence designated by the Lewy Body Dementia Association • Wilson Disease Center of Excellence designated by the Wilson Disease Association • Charcot Marie Tooth Center of Excellence • Miami VA Epilepsy Center of Excellence n


Research Achievements n

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY ranked #15 in NIH funding; 68% of faculty have research funding; maintained >$17M for the last 3 years; research represents 45% of total revenue.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY Continues to lead collaborative research initiatives such as:

• The Brain Endowment Bank (a NIH NeuroBioBank) • The NINDS StrokeNet and NeuroNext clinical trials network • Part of the 1FL Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center

• Part of a RCMAR grant to study Alzheimer’s in Native Americans • The Florida Stroke Registry

The McKnight Brain Institute, 1 of 4 in the US studying age related memory loss The new Comprehensive Center for Brain Health, a research and clinical center with a dual focus of diagnosis and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal degeneration

• Deep Brain Stimulation program, treating neurological symptoms in patients with movement disorders, psychiatric disorders and epilepsy

• Growth of the NINDS/ALS CReATe Consortium • Stem Cell research in patients with Alzheimer’s or ischemic stroke


Education Achievements n

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY continues to be ranked as one of the largest residency program in US with 42 residents and 20 fellows; have excellent MATCH and fellowship placements; had many presentations at meetings, including AAN; moved didactics and journal clubs to a virtual platform; and RITE exam scores 85th percentile overall.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY organized and hosted:

• The 6th Annual CReATe Consortium meeting virtually, with 100+ U.S. and international attendees from academia; NIH, foundation, and industry partners; and ALS patient groups • The 22nd annual ALS Patient Symposium, virtually. It was attended by 150 patients and family members

• The 8th Annual FL Stroke Registry Stakeholder Meeting (virtual)

• The 12th McKnight Brain Institute’s Inter-Institutional Meeting, first to be held virtually, with more than 260 attendees from the four Institutes and the McKnight Brain Research Foundation Trustees n
