Hawkcoming 2022 Reflection FROM TIFFANY PENN, 3RD VICE PRESIDENT

The new year is a great time to reflect on the past, present and future.

As I think about the past and to prepare for the future, I reminisce about Hawkcoming 2K22 and the great memories it created. The Life Member and Class Reunion Masquerade Sneaker Ball on Thursday was a class act and the perfect kickoff for the alumni events. If you missed out, be sure to add this event to your list of MUST ATTEND events this year. Thursday night's event is the perfect mix of fun, fashion and fellowship. In 2K22, we added a few new events for a different spin on things. The "In The Game Mixer", an extension of the tailgate inside the game, was well received by all from the bar, to food, vending and seating. We are hoping to add this to our homecoming traditions. We ended the homecoming weekend with an R&B Brunch and a private screening of Wakanda. These events were open to student hawks as well as alumni. Sunday's events provided us a different setting to allow us a chance to network and fellowship with one another.

Year over year, we continue to be blessed with amazing weather for the tailgate. It was also a great day for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the alumni house now named after the last known oldest living graduate of Princess Anne College, Lt. Colonel Louis F. Martin. He transitioned on November 27th, 2021 at the age of 104. He was also the oldest living member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Overall, Hawkcoming 2K22 was truly a week like no other.

NATIONAL & CHAPTER EVENTS UMES SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALUMNI CHAPTER, INC.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, Inc.'s Membership Committee hosted a Meet & Greet, under the leadership of Shenika Sledge, 2nd Vice President, on Friday, October 14, 2022, to increase chapter and National Alumni Association membership. The chapter welcomed fellow Hawks alongside the Executive Board Members, Teonna Wallop, President; Lisa Jackson, 1st Vice President; and Akira Ali, Parliamentarian. Alumni gathered at Blue Dyer Distilling Co., fellowshipped with complimentary food and drinks, reminisced about their college experiences, and learned about local and national alumni benefits and events.

The event helped increase the chapter members to 41 members. If you missed it, you missed a great time.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, Inc.'s Ways & Means Committee, hosted its first Halloween Costume Party, under the leadership of Lisa Jackson, 1st Vice President, on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Blue Moon DC. to raise money for their Fallen Hawks Fund and their efforts to support the UMES Pep Band. The event was a success, the costumes were amazing and Alumni DJ, Sean the Monsta kept the party lit.

NATIONAL & CHAPTER EVENTS NYC TRI-STATE ALUMNI CHAPTER

University of Maryland Eastern Shore New York City Tri-State Alumni Chapter attended The Harlem Renaissance Classic 2022 held at The City College of New York on November 19, 2022. They were met by other HBCU alumni at the event as well.

UMES BALTIMORE ALUMNI CHAPTER, INC. On December 15, 2022, UMES Baltimore Alumni Chapter, Inc. held their 2nd Annual Bowling Party and Toy Drive. The chapter in collaboration with other community organizations assisted The Christmas for Community Partnership, to provide Christmas gifts for over 100 children in Baltimore City and County.

One of the organizations that the chapter provided gifts for is the Christopher Place Employment Academy. This is an organization that provides men that were recently released from incarceration with the support they need to be productive citizens. The chapter provide gifts to help them to reunify with their children. Family support reduces recidivism.

NATIONAL & CHAPTER EVENTS TRI-COUNTY ALUMNI CHAPTER On December 16, 2022, UMES Tri-County Alumni Chapter hosted its "12 Days of Hawkmas" fundraiser. The fundraising efforts allowed the chapter to provide 20 boxes of food to international students who remained on campus over the winter break. Efforts to support student hawks that remain on campus during the holidays is an annual initiative for the chapter.

UMES SOUTHERN MARYLAND ALUMNI CHAPTER, INC.

On December 16, 2022, UMES Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, Inc.'s Community Outreach Committee hosted its annual "Adopta-Hawk" initiative which brings awareness to homeless college students and food insecurities. The chapter was able to raise enough funds to provide holiday gift baskets to 8 students that remained on campus for the holidays. Last year they were able to support 4 student hawks so this year, the support doubled. In addition to providing gift baskets, they were able to provide lunch for 40 students.

NATIONAL & CHAPTER EVENTS NYC TRI-STATE ALUMNI CHAPTER On December 17, 2022, UMES NYC Tri-State Alumni Chapter hosted its Hawksgiving Brunch Coat & Toy Drive to benefit P.S.93 The Magnet School of STEAM, Isaiah House of East Orange and the TriState Alumni Scholarship Fund. The two benefitting organizations were able to distribute coats and toys to children and parents in need.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS Garland R. Hayward,Sr., recently retired Vice

President of the Princess Anne Town Commissioners in Princess Anne, MD was the first African American to be elected as a Commissioner for the Town of Princess Anne. He is a dedicated community member and continues to work tirelessly to improve living conditions for community members of Princess Anne, MD. He worked effortlessly to provide recreational facilities for youth in the Town of Princess Anne, and in 2008, the town named its first ever youth facility in his honor, The Garland Hayward Youth Center and Park. Mr. Hayward is a retired State of Delaware school teacher and taught at Delmar Senior High School for thirty years.

While at Delmar, he served as teacher, advisor, head basketball coach, and head baseball coach. He received the Delaware Coach of the Year Award for basketball.

Mr. Hayward was also nominated as teacher of the Year for the Delmar School District. Mr. Hayward worked many years striving to develop a strong Town and Gown working relationship with his Alma Mater University of Maryland Eastern Shore. His desire to become a teacher stems from his upbringing in a rural setting in Somerset County (Oaksville). As a youngster, he would “play school” with his younger siblings where he portrayed the role of teacher. He likes to boast that he “taught” his younger sisters and brother to read and write.

Mr. Hayward attended an all-black elementary and high school. He is a graduate of Somerset Jr. Senior High School (now Kiah Hall on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore). He attended Maryland State College (now UMES) on a four-year scholarship. During his matriculation at UMES, he married his high school sweetheart (Mildred) and started to raise a family. Because the scholarship was not sufficient to support a family, he had to work and became employed with Dresser Industries. Though he was able to support his family with his salary, working full-time and going to college full-time took a toll on his grade point average, which dropped from 3.5 to 2.5. Consequently, he lost his scholarship and became very discouraged, and contemplated dropping out of college. At the encouragement and insistence of his wife, he continued to work and attend college full-time. He became more focused on his studies and was now more determined than ever to finish college so that he could fulfill his life-long dream of becoming a teacher. Yet, fate would not yet allow him to realize this dream. In his fourth year of college, he was drafted into the Army to serve his country. After serving his country, he returned to Princess Anne and was re-employed with Dresser Industries and readmitted to Maryland State College, where he received his BS in Agriculture Education in 1975. He later pursued his Master’s Degree in Agriculture Extension Education. Mr. Hayward is also retired military; having served 2 years in the US Army, 10 years in the National Guard, and 15 years in the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Hayward served as Chapel Manager at Dover Air Force Base during the 9/11/2001 attack where he helped process the remains of the victims from the attack.

Mr. Hayward is currently a Lay Speaker at St. Mark United Methodist Church, President of the Somerset Local Management Board and Immediate Past President of the UMES Tri-County Alumni Chapter. He is very active with programs at the Garland Hayward Youth Center, to include the GHYC After School Program, Young Men of Distinction, Sister to Sister and Community Garden Program, to name a few. He is also a member of the American Legion, East Gate Masonic Lodge, the Delaware Retired Teachers Association, Maryland Municipal League of Cities Hall of Fame and Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame. He has received many accolades and awards for his involvement in the community and surrounding areas. Mr. Hayward’s philosophy is “Everyone has a gift given to them by God, use it and be the best that you can be. We are all Kings and Queens.” Mr. Hayward and his wife reside in Princess Anne and have two sons and several grandchildren.

On December 17, 2021, Garland received an honorary Doctorate from University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS Starletta DuPois, a gifted veteran character actress, has breathed life into a bevy of unforgettable roles both onstage and onscreen. Starletta is recognized from her roles in many cult classics including Friday After Next with Ice Cube and Mike Epps, Big Momma's House with Martin Lawrence, and Oliver Stone's South Central. She was recently seen in the faith-based film Mosaic, the inspirational drama Boarding House, and the screen adaptation of the popular book True To The Game. She can also be seen in the film, Magic Max playing Mrs. Chambers. Throughout her illustrious career, she has shared the screen with many gifted luminaries such as James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Jack Nicholson, Lou Gossett Jr. Robert Duvall, Steve Harvey, Gena Rowlands, Marla Gibbs, Denzel Washington, and the late James Garner.

However, millions around the world still remember her playing the late Whitney Houston's mother in Waiting To Exhale. On television, her resume is equally as impressive. Small screen highlights include: Lost, Cold Case, Any Day Now, Strapped, The Carmichael Show, The Rich & The Ruthless, and the Lifetime movie Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland where she played Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

Her theater roots run deep and have garnered her numerous recognitions starting with her Tony Nomination for The Mighty Gents and a NAACP Theater Award nomination for Miss Evers Boys at the Mark Taper Forum. She has also done a ton of regional theater including Intimate Apparel, King Hedley II, and Before It Hits Home at St Louis Black Rep where she received The Woodie Award, named for her theatrical mentor and dear friend Woodie King Jr. She also has the distinction of originating the role of Bernice in August Wilson's The Piano Lesson directed by Lloyd Richards.

Another unique and remarkable feat is that fact that she has played all three female characters in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun. Not only did she receive an NAACP Image Award for her portrayal of Ruth Younger in the landmark PBS American Playhouse production opposite Danny Glover, she was awarded a Best Actress award for playing Lena Younger at the Royal Exchange in London, England. Her work has also been lauded by the Los Angeles Women's Theater Festival which gave her their Eternity Award, and is the recipient of not one but two Living Legend Awards: one from The Giving Back Corporation and the second from the National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A Philadelphia native, Starletta holds a B.S. in Biology from University of Maryland Eastern Shore and an MFA from UCLA in Theater Arts where she graduated magna cum laude. A lifelong philanthropist she has a passion for mentoring aspiring artists, Starletta has proudly served as an adjunct professor at USC. This unstoppable talent has successfully toured the solo play, Order My Steps, and is hard at work on her autobiographical solo play.

On May 20, 2022, Starletta received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS THREE-TIME UMES ALUMNUS

Dr. Kadeem Turnbull, has been serving as the

Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events for the past three years at the university. Mr. Turnbull earned all three of his degrees, undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate, from UMES. Kadeem has been an active member of the university community since his arrival on campus almost ten years ago. He has served in many roles during his undergraduate career and post-graduation as an Area Director and Graduate Assistant in the Office of Residence Life. He is active in the community and very involved with Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne. Kadeem works alongside the NAA President, Teonna Wallop to create a true partnership while bridging the gap between alumni and the university.

Kadeem doesn't believe the work stops at 5 o'clock. After work, he serves on campus in the capacity of teaching theatre 203 and 204. He stated “Our students need different outlets to express themselves the way they want to.” His vision is the same, “One Hawk at a time.” While in his current position he has learned that in order to be successful the team needs to cohesively match one beat. His primary focus is our alumni community and making sure the changes that are needed are being made. There is progress being made but there is still much more work to be done.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS ALUMNI HAWK TV DEBUTSPOTLIGHT Brandon Larkins, is a proud Class of 2001 alumnus.

Brandon attended the university on a track scholarship, where he majored in Rehabilitation Services. He is originally from Baltimore, MD but now residing in Los Angeles, CA. In November 2022, Brandon joined ABC’s long-running daytime drama General Hospital as the new character, Axel.

Larkins is known from previous appearances on FOX’s 9-1-1: Lonestar, and TBS’ Cougar Town.

Aside from acting, Larkins is also an executive producer of the series, Chronicles of Jessica Wu. The series just wrapped its third season. This upcoming season of the series will introduce veteran award-winning actress, Jasmine Guy to the cast.

Larkins is also the creator and writer of the new sitcom “ON THE PHINTZ”, (pilot presentation currently being pitched to networks.)

Brandon Larkins is repped by agent Sueanne Edan of Tangerine Talent and publicist LaTonya Carmouchè of Carmouchè PR. General Hospital is both the longest-running American soap opera and currently in production and the longest-running scripted television drama currently in production. The show has won the Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Drama for a record 15 times.

Harold A. Fowler, Aviation Science program

alumnus and Baltimore native, was named as the new Chief of Airport Operations and Maintenance for the Martin State Airport in Middle River, about 10 miles east of downtown Baltimore. He previously served as the Director of Fixed Base Operations for Martin State Airport. His earlier airport and aviation management experience includes positions with Signature Flight Support, Aircraft Service International Group, and BBA Aviation. Mr. Fowler also served in a leadership support role with MDOT’s Office of Minority Business Enterprise. He succeeds Al Pollard, who recently retired after 30 years with MDOT MAA and Martin State Airport.

Dr. Alyssa Reese, Class of 2022 pharmacy program, won the Next-Generation Pharmacist's Future Pharmacist Award. This award is given to students who “demonstrates spirit and passion for the profession, primarily through academic achievement, in conjunction with one or more of the following criteria: industry advocacy, patient advocacy, technology innovation, civic leadership and/or environmental stewardship with regard to pharmacy,” according to the Next Generation Pharmacist website.

Anfernee Robinson, Founder of AnimeBae Studios

was recognized by Forbes 30 under 30 in Media for 2023!

Anfernee Robinson is the founder of AnimeBae studios which creates Manga, animations and TV pilots featuring characters of color. In 2020, he published a Manga series that was a #1 read for four months on Amazon.

LT. COLONEL LOUIS F. MARTIN ALUMNI HOUSE On November 12, 2022 during homecoming we hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Alumni House which is named after the last known oldest living graduate of Princess Anne College. Lt. Colonel Louis F. Martin was last with us virtually during Hawkcoming on November 11, 2021 and passed away on November 27, 2021. He died at the age of 104. Lt. Colonel Louis F. Martin was also the oldest living member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and pledged the Almighty Alpha Mu Chapter on the yard in 1939.

HAWKCOMING 2022 SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY, INCORPORATED CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION "Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin and Cubena McClure. The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University.

Soaring To Greater Heights of Attainment Around the World, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., as a leading national service organization, has met the challenges of the day and continues to grow through Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service."

Celebrating 100 Years

The Nu Delta Chapter was charted on our campus on October 17, 1992.

During Homecoming weekend, on November 12, 2022, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated celebrated 100 years of service WITH SERVICE! On November 12, 2022, they participated in their Annual Restock the Pantry National Day of Service Project. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated solicited snacks, drinks, hygiene products and canned foods for the UMES Hawk Shares Pantry to assist UMES students facing food insecurities.

They also adopted a family on the lower eastern shore and provided them with holiday gifts. In addition, they provided holiday cookies and greeting cards to the residents at the Candle Light Cove Assisted Living Center.

The Nu Delta chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho also celebrated its 30th charter anniversary on October 17, 2022. Members of the charter class of 1992 and past members of the Nu Delta Chapter celebrated during the Homecoming 2022 festivities.

HAWKCOMING 2022 Golden Hawks Class of 1972

UMES Class of 1972 celebrated their 50 year anniversary, in conjunction with the Class of 1971, during Homecoming. On Saturday, November 12, 2022, our Golden Hawks held their celebration in the Student Services Center. The success of their anniversary celebration allowed them to raise $20,000.00 to donate back to our alma mater.

UMES Class of 2002 kicked off their 20 year celebration at the Life Member & Class Reunion Masquerade Sneaker Ball on Thursday, November 10, 2022. During the event they raised $1,000.00 to donate back to our alma mater to commemorate their anniversary.

HAWKCOMING 2022 Class of 2012 10th Anniversary UMES Class of 2012 kicked off their 10 year celebration on Friday, November 11, 2022 at the Fountains Wedding & Conference Center and then concluded the celebration with a table at the tailgate.

ALUMNI RECRUITERS Alumni Recruiters assist the UMES Office of Admissions & Recruitment by covering college fairs that our Admissions & Recruitment staff are not able to attend.

They also accompany our recruiters for added support. All alumni recruiters go through virtual training on a yearly basis to obtain and maintain their certification.

WINTER COMMENCEMENT Congratulations to the Fall Graduating Class of 2022 On December 16, 2022, Madam President led the Class in taking the alumni oath.

As they recited the alumni oath, our newest alumni were joined by our Golden Hawks and all alumni present during the commencement ceremony. While the alumni oath was new for our newest alumni, for all other alumni it was a chance to renew their oath to the association. All new alumni receive a free membership to the National Alumni Association for one full year.

UPCOMING EVENTS We have raised $3,778.81 towards our effort to raise $30,000.00 to support our Student Hawks. While scholarship has always been the main focus of our donations, we noticed that our Student Hawks have some additional needs. The Pep Band could use new uniforms and instruments. Harry the Hawk could use a makeover and the student wearing the uniform could benefit from a scholarship. The proceeds will be split in three ways to accommodate those needs.

You have the option to give a one-time donation or recurring payments. No amount is small and we certainly understand if you are not in a position to give.
