BULLDOGS AT ROMANO GYM

ROMANO GYMNASIUM For over half a century, the venerable Romano Gymnasium has been the home of University of Minnesota Duluth basketball. The Bulldog women’s basketball squads over the years have enjoyed success, winning at a .746 clip at the on-campus facility. Romano Gym can hold up to 2,759 spectators since undergoing an extensive $2 million face lift following the 1986-87 season. The facility was named in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983. Since the 1979-80 season, UMD has posted a sparkling 358-122 mark at home, winning at least 10 games on its own court in all but 16 seasons. The Bulldogs recorded 10 or more home victories in seven-straight seasons from 1984-85 through 1990-91 and set a school record with 15 home victories in 1988-89, a season during which UMD made its second straight national tournament appearance. In addition, the Bulldogs have turned in just two losing records at Romano Gymnasium in the last 30 seasons. The Bulldogs are also a perfect 21-0 all-time in postseason games at Romano Gymnasium, a record that included a 16-0 mark in NAIA District play in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now a member of the NCAA and one of the nation’s premier circuits, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, UMD continues to bring the country’s top Division II teams to campus.

Mandy Pearson Third-year head coach Mandy Pearson, following a 14-14 (11-11 NSIC) second season, will look to continue to stamp her mark on the University of Minnesota Duluth women’s basketball program. The Bulldogs doubled their win total from Pearson’s first season at the helm, displaying definite signs of a program headed in the right direction. Pearson will look to continue to take steps forward in the 2017-18 season and vault UMD further up the NSIC standings just like she did at her previous institution. Pearson proved her ability to turn a program around while leading the NCAA Division III Cardinals since the 2007 season, providing stability to a program that posted a 7-18 record during the 200607 season and needed its third coach in as many seasons before she stepped into the role. Saint Mary’s quickly moved up the ranks in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference under her guidance, securing its first playoff bid since 2005 during the 2011-12 campaign. A year later, the Cardinals posted a 22-5 record, second-best in program history, advanced to the MIAC Tournament semifinals, and earned a victory over UMD’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Winona State University. Pearson was named the MIAC Coach of the Year for the first time in 2012-13, repeating that feat a year later, and also earned the SMU Staff Recognition Award following that season. Her last two years with the Cardinals, Pearson’s squads posted a 42-13 combined record including a 24-4 mark--best in program history--in 2013-14. The team found itself ranked in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today Sports NCAA III Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and d3hoops.com polls for the first time ever, as high as no. 12 in 2013-14 and in the top-25 from d3hoops. com in 2014-15. In her nine seasons as the SMU bench boss, Pearson produced one d3hoops.com All-American selection in Courtney Euerle (an honorable mention in 2013-14), who also earned MIAC Player of the Year honors and was the only player from the entire conference to earn All-America recognition that season. Pearson also produced two All-NCAA III West Region Team members, nine All-MIAC award selections, seven all-conference honorable mentions, four All-MIAC Defensive Team selections, and four MIAC All-First Year Team picks. Before joining Saint Mary’s, Pearson served as an assistant with

HEAD COACH, THIRD SEASON

NCAA III Hamline University during the 2005-07 seasons after wrapping up a four-year playing career at another MIAC school, Concordia College of Moorhead. Pearson earned three All-MIAC selections during her playing career and was named a First Team All-American during her senior season in 2004-05. She was the first Cobber to achieve 1,000 points and 500 assists in her career. She also played softball for Concordia-Moorhead, earning All-MIAC citation on the diamond as well in her senior campaign. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Concordia with minors in sociology, health and coaching. While coaching at Saint Mary’s, she earned her Master of Arts degree in human development in 2013. Over the last five years, Pearson has spoken at several camps and clinics, including the Minnesota State High School League Association Clinic in 2011. She also polished her own coaching acumen at the Nike Championship Basketball Clinic, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Northern State University, and Final Four Coaching Clinics.

Jenna Freudenberg Associate head coach Jenna Freudenberg will return to the Bulldog coaching staff for her third season in 2016-17. Freudenberg joined UMD in 2015-16 after a six-year stint with Saint Mary’s University. She began coaching with Pearson in 200910 and quickly ascended to the title of lead assistant and, during 2014-15, associate head coach. “I am extremely excited that Jenna has decided to become a part of the Bulldog family,” said Pearson. “She is a phenomenal person to work with and will bring a great deal of energy and knowledge to our women’s basketball program.” Freudenberg, who shares an alma mater with Pearson having played her collegiate basketball at Concordia College of Moorhead, also obtained her Master’s of Arts in human development from Saint Mary’s in 2013. As an athlete, she earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) MVP honors, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American Honorable Mention, and participated in a pair of NCAA tournaments while with the Cobbers. In her two short years, Freudenberg has helped electrify a program

At SMU, she served as the team’s recruiting coordinator resulting in six All-MIAC selections, an All-MIAC MVP, and one d3hoops.com All-West Region performer. She also set up the team’s camps, helped assemble fundraising opportunities, and aided in organizing volunteer activities for the team. She also worked as Saint Mary’s director of intramural athletics from 2009-15 after spending a year as the assistant director. In the past, Freudenberg attended the MIAC Female Women’s Administrator Mentor Program as well as the Minnesota State High School League, Nike Championship, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Northern State University, and Lasallian Coaches’ clinics.
