QUICK FACTS

MALOSKY STADIUM

2018 MINNESOTA DULUTH SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Northern Minnesota’s premier outdoor athletic venue, James S. Malosky Stadium has been the home of Bulldog soccer for all 24 seasons since the program’s inception in 1994. The University of Minnesota Duluth’s advantage on its home turf is well known. In 200 lifetime appearances, the Bulldogs have posted a 134-51-15 overall record (good for a .708 winning percentage) at the complex named after legendary Bulldog football head coach Jim Malosky. UMD has also had three perfect home seasons (10-0 in 1995, 7-0 in 1998 and 8-0 in 2009) and only two losing records (2005 and 2015) on its own turf. The advantage goes unoticed as the Bulldogs have sported a 11-1 postseason record at Malosky Stadium. UMD and Malosky hosted its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in 1998, which the Bulldogs ultimately won. Fifteen years later, Malosky added the NCAA Tournament to the long list of hosting events. UMD hosted the 2013 NCAA Central Region Tournament and the Super Regional. After the turn of the century, a $6.5 million, four-level structure, which houses a concession area, suites and press facilities, was added to the grandstand. In 2013, the Bulldogs added a brand new 22-foot-by-12-foot video scoreboard, a project funded by an anonymous donor and dedicated to “walk-on” athletes. In the summer of 2016, the Stadium turf received an upgrade with the gold Bulldog head at center field and alternating shades of green every five yards. Last fall, Malosky Stadium received a $1.2 million renovation to completely overhaul the eight-lane track encompasssing the pitch. In addition to housing the football, women’s soccer, softball, and track and field Bulldogs, the 4,500-seat Malosky Stadium also hosts a number of high school and junior college football, soccer and track events throughout the year as well as various UMD intramural activities.

2018 MINNESOTA DULUTH SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Every team that appeared on the schedule last year for the Bulldogs makes an appearance once again for the 2017 season. UMD has three non-conference bouts before starting the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate. The season begins with a home contest against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside before traveling east to Michigan to battle a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foes in Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, a rivalry that gone on since 2009. Last year, UMD sported a 2-1 record during that nonconference tilt and, in doing so, clinched their first-ever victory over the Rangers (1-0 shutout). The NSIC season begins at Malosky Stadium with a three-game homestand starting Tuesday under the lights against travel buddy St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs engages with Minnesota State University, Mankato, who finished last season 19th-ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, and Concordia- St. Paul that weekend. In addition, UMD will have once more long extended three-game home stretch in the middle of October. Before that, however, is a clash with the defending regular season champions Minot State University. The season ends treacherous as the Bulldogs play three or their final four games on the road including stretching into South Dakota and Nebraska to play Augustana College and Wayne State College. UMD ends their home schedule Oct. 27 against Bemidji State University prior to closing out the entire regular season Sunday against the University of Minnesota Crookston. When it’s all said and done, the Bulldogs will hope to find themselves among one of the top teams in the NSIC. Checking in at No. 6 in the annual league’s coaches poll, captains Skye Finley and Hailey Hoff hope to guide UMD into postseason play. The top-eight clubs face off in the first round of the NSIC tournament which is set for Nov. 1 on home sites with the remaining top seed hosting the semifinals (Nov. 3) and finals (Nov. 5) for a bid into the NCAA II Tournament.

of consistency in the upper midwest. His keen eye for talent and development has generated 27 different NSCAA/Daktronics AllCentral Region players including three All-Americans in Clare Dahmen and Hannah Bengston in 2009 and Maria Leider the following season. Additionally, Cane has manufactured a trio of NSIC Offensive Players of the Year, a pair of NSIC Defensive Players of the Year and a NSIC Newcomer of the Year (Sheridan Reiners) in 2014. For a three-year period, Cane doubled as the head coach of UMD women’s tennis starting in 1995. Under the watch of Cane, the Bulldogs produced a 30-15 overall record and won three-straight NSIC titles. In his first season, UMD set a single-season record for victories and winning percentage with a 15-2 mark as the Bulldogs made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. For his efforts, Cane was named the 1995 NSIC Coach of the Year. Following his graduation from Duluth’s Cathedral High School, Cane played varsity soccer for three seasons at the College of St. Scholastica. After graduating from CSS in 1983 with bachelor’s degrees in both secondary education and history, he remained at his alma mater as the head coach of the men’s soccer varsity team. KELLY GRGAS-WHEELER

ASSISTANT COACH, 15TH SEASON

2018 MINNESOTA DULUTH SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

A name certainly familiar to those in the Duluth area soccer circles, Kelly Grgas-Wheeler returns for her 15th season with the Bulldogs in 2018. Since her arrival, Grgas-Wheeler has helped guide student-athletes to success on-and-off the pitch. UMD has had five All-American citations, as well as 38 All-Central region picks. Her mentoring help craft one of the program’s best offensive players in Maureen Stormont, who left with multiple records etched in her name including most goals and points in a single season (2013). Stormont was also named the 2014 NSIC Player of the Year as she left the program with the most goals and points. UMD has also seen a pair of conference Defensive Player of the Year honorees in Reegan Lloyd and Hannah Bengston during her time as well. In addition, Grgas-Wheeler has shaped Bulldogs into outstanding role models by initiating the program’s Kicks For Causes program in 2014. Three players (Kate McMahon, Kelli Klun and Kelly Duchene) have been awarded the Shjon Podein Community Service Award for best leadership qualities and volunteer contributions to the surrounding communities and 10 athletes have been bestowed with the Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award (at least a 3.75 cumulative GPA), the latest being local native Emily Fleissner just last year. The longest-serving UMD assistant in program history, Grgas- Wheeler joined the Bulldog staff in 2004 with four years of previous high-level collegiate coaching experience tucked under her belt. That included a two-season assistant stint at NCAA Division-I University of Texas

El Paso. While in El Paso, she helped mold the Miners into one of the most potent offensive clubs in the nation (UTEP led the nation in goals scored in 2002). In addition to duties behind the bench, her responsibilities with the Miners also consisted of scheduling, game management and recruiting. Before accepting the UTEP post, Grgas-Wheeler was an assistant coach at Cochise College (Ariz.) for two years. As a forward at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., Grgas-Wheeler was a three-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) First Team selection (1996-98). A two-year captain, she was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player three times while rewriting the school’s record books. She left Ottawa owning all-time marks for goals, assists, and points and still owns the number three mark for assists in a season (10 in 1997) and the eight spot for points in a single season (32 in 1997). Grgas-Wheeler was also a four-year letterwinner for the Braves on the basketball court and earned her bachelor of English degree from OU in 1999. Grgas-Wheeler received her NSCAA National Diploma in June of 2007. Since 2000, she has served as a Gitchi Gummi Club soccer coach, including as a technical coach for the U-9, U-10 and U-12 age groups the past three springs. She has directed multiple club teams to the MYSA state tournament, including in 2013 and 2010, as well as a U-13 state title in 2003. Grgas-Wheeler is a graduate of Duluth East High School and also serves as the women’s hockey sports information director at UMD, a role she has held since 2007. She lives in Duluth with her two-year old twin sons Lachlan and Luka.

SONJA BARR

GOALKEEPER COACH, 3RD SEASON

Joining the Bulldogs for a third straight year of duty, Sonja Barr will continue look over the goalkeepers for the 2018 season. A native of Duluth, Minn., Barr has ties associated to UMD as her father, Calvin, played football and her mother, Anita, played tennis. She is also familiar with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, as she competed four seasons at Bemidji State University as a goalkeeper. Barr earned numerous accomplishments over her

stellar career - including holding the Beavers’ record for lowest goals against average in a season (0.81). A NSIC all-conference selection in 2013, Barr holds down the sixth most shutouts (16) in conference history. Barr graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in sports management and coaching specialist. Following collegiate play, Barr earned a level three goalkeeper coaching license, which she shares her experience with the Bulldog goalkeepers.

2018 MINNESOTA DULUTH SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

The Bulldogs have compiled a 3-3 lifetime record in the NCAA Division II playoffs. UMD has made three NCAA postseason appearances with its initial appearance seven years after the inception of the program. It wasn’t until 2009 that the Bulldogs would return to the postseason field and pick up their first collegiate postseason victory -- a 2-0 shutout of Minnesota State. The latest postseason run reached new heights for the program as UMD clinched the second seed and hosted one-half of the central region tournament. That season, the Bulldogs moved onto uncharted territory in the NCAA Super Regionals. They also hosted the event, losing to the eventual NCAA National Champions Grand Valley State.

Dahmen capped off her stellar career with her best season recording the Bulldogs first and only first team All-American recognition from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (also second team accolades from Daktronics). The Hopkins, Minn., native potted 11 goals and added four assists for 26 points, the highest offensive output by a Bulldog since Nicole Fietz notched 36 points in 2003. The forward scored eight game-winning goals, tops among the NSIC. The two-year captain took home NSIC All-Conference First Team honors, a spot on the NSIC All-Tournament Team, and earned the tournament MVP award; all in propelling the Bulldogs to the teams’ fifth NSIC Tournament championship, and the program’s first NCAA postseason victory.

Bengtson was a key catalyst getting UMD back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000 receiving National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Daktronics Third Team honors. The Lino Lakes, Minn., native was named the Bulldogs’ first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Year as she registered 12 shutouts, the second-highest total any Bulldog netminder has put up (Michele Filipczak recorded 14.5 in 2000). Bengtson finished the year tops among her NSIC net colleagues in goals against average (0.63), saves percentage (0.886) as well as shutouts. Her saves percentage mark was eighth-best in the NCAA. Bengtson’s 109 saves that season is still the second most in program history.

Leider became the first Bulldog defender to receive All-American acclaim from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The senior captain earned a position on the NSCAA All-American Second Team. A key defender for UMD in 2010, Leider assisted in holding opponents to a maximum of three goals in a game, and only 15 goals all season. She was a part of a backline that allowed the fourth lowest goals against average (0.73) and fifth most shutouts in program history (15). The Duluth, Minn., native contributed some offensive stats of her own. Leider had 19 shot attempts with 10 shots on goal. She combined for one goal -- a game-winner nonetheless -- and three assists for five points.
