UMD BULLDOGS ROMANO GYMNASIUM

A 2,759-seat facility which opened in 1953, Romano Gymnasium has been a welcome home to the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team since the inception of the program in 1971.

in the NSIC. This year features the newest enhancement as a $300,000 12-by-20 feet ultra-high resolution Daktronics video board was installed on the north end of Romano Gymnasium to provide replays and up-to-the-second stats.

Winning 86 percent of all matches in the facility since 1977 (383-62 overall), the most recent era of UMD volleyball has been lethal at Romano, posting a 61-8 record in Duluth the last five years. The Bulldogs have gone undefeated at home eight times, and have recorded at least double-digits victories in a season on 19 occasions.

A Romano Gymnasium record volleyball crowd of 2,441 spectators came through the gates to see the Bulldogs square off with bitter rival Concordia-St. Paul in 2012. It was the largest turnout for a UMD volleyball match since a then-record 2,312 fans showed up to witness a battle between the Bulldogs and Golden Bears at Romano on Oct. 30, 2007 — a contest UMD took down in a decisive fifth set. The Bulldogs played host to the 2007 Division II North Central Regional Tournament, advancing to the regional final before falling to eventual-champion Concordia-St. Paul before a crowd of nearly 1,800 fans.

Named in honor of the late UMD Athletic Director Ralph Romano, the gymnasium underwent a $2 million face-lift following the 1986 season. A new hardwood floor was installed in 2010, providing the Bulldogs with one of the newer playing surfaces

UMD BULLDOGS JIM BOOS

HEAD COACH, 16th SEASON

• 2006-07 NCC Coach of the Year • 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year • 15 NCAA Tournament Appearances

The winningest coach in program history, Jim Boos took over the Bulldog program in 2002 and immediately led the team to the forefront of the NCAA Division II scene. UMD has transformed into a perennial national title contender under Boos, making 13 consecutive trips to the NCAA II National Tournament from 2002 to 2014. The 2015 season proved an illuminating one for Boos and the Bulldogs, they were left out of NCAA II postseason play for the first time in 14 seasons despite a 23-8 overall record, a No. 10 AVCA Il final ranking, and a pair of wins during the regular season over the eventual national champion, Wheeling Jesuit University. That illumination highlighted the impressive nature of that consecutive string of postseason appearances in what is arguably one of the, if not the, toughest regions in the nation. Boos and the Bulldogs plunged back into the NCAA II Tournament scene, securing a fourth-seed following a 25-5, 17-3 NSIC mark in the regular season. Boos wasted little time making his mark on the program, moving his inaugural UMD team into the national rankings after just two weeks. The Bulldogs have been there to stay -- literally. UMD has ranked in every AVCA national poll since 2002. The Bulldogs secured their first-ever No. 1 ranking in school history a month after cracking the national top 25 under Boos on Oct. 15, 2002, just two months into his tenure. Since, UMD has earned the top ranking on 16 different occasions, holding the top spot for four straight weeks in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The Bulldogs would finish 29-3 in Boos’ first goaround, romping to an 18-0 mark against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition as Boos laid claim to the first of his eight conference championships to date. At the end of his debut season behind the Bulldog bench, Boos was recognized by his colleagues as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. He’d repeat that feat in 2011 and again in 2014, when UMD went 20-0 in their tough NSIC schedule defeating 11 ranked teams on the way to a program-best winning percentage with a 33-2 overall record.

record. Additionally, his teams have posted a 182-31 record in 11 seasons of NSIC competition. Following a shift out of the NSIC at the conclusion of the 2003 season, Boos and the Bulldogs won four consecutive North Central Conference titles from 2004-07, posting a 45-3 four-year record and putting together back-to-back 12-0 league records in 2006 and 2007. The NCC disbanded at the conclusion of the 2007 season, when Boos was presented with an NCC Legacy Award (He’s the only UMD representative to receive the honor). Boos made UMD history in 2004 when the Bulldogs earned their inaugural trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight. UMD would advance as far as the national semifinals before falling to eventual champion Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Boos was named the 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year on the heels of a 27-5 record and deep playoff run. Two years later, the Bulldogs made a similar postseason push, again bowing out to an eventual champion (this time the University of Tampa) in the Elite Eight semifinals. UMD has been able to rely on consistently sound recruiting and talent development since Boos took charge. As a result, his players have reaped the benefits on an individual level. So far, Boos has

Winning has become a tradition under Boos, who surpassed his predecessor, Pati Rolf, for most career coaching victories at UMD in 2013 when his Bulldogs defeated Minnesota State Mankato on Sept. 28, his 311th career win. Boos also eclipsed the 400-win plateau during the 2016 campaign as he sits 300 games over .500 with a 412-75 overall

produced two National Players of the Year in Vicky Braegelmann (’07) and Kate Lange (’13) and shelled out 22 AVCA All-Americans including six during the 2014 season. Additionally, Boos has produced players who constantly rewrite the Bulldog record book, establishing new career leaders in kills (including the top three), hitting percentage (top three), assists (top two), total blocks (top two), and defensive digs. Boos officially signed on at UMD July 24, 2002, becoming the school’s fourth head volleyball coach since 1976. He succeeded Pati Rolf (1988-2001), who resigned as head coach May 10, 2002 to take over at Division I Marquette University in the same capacity. A native of Delafield, Wis., Boos earned his Bachelor’s

degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1994 and obtained a Master’s degree in educational leadership from that same institution five years later. Boos served as an assistant coach for the Titans from 1992-98, helping guide them to four NCAA Division III national tournaments, including a runnerup finish in 1994. While Boos was a member of the coaching staff, Wisconsin-Oshkosh won two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns and produced three NCAA III All-Americans, one of whom was named National Player of the Year in 1996. Three years prior to taking over at UMD, Boos was an assistant coach at North Dakota State University, where he helped the Bison to their seventh straight NCAA Division II Tournament in 2001. In his three years at NDSU, the Bison compiled an overall record of 80-21 and captured two NCC titles. In addition to coaching at UMD, Boos serves on the AVCA Board of Directors as the Division II representative. He and his wife, Jenn, live in Duluth with their two sons, Mason and Carter.

UMD BULLDOGS CHRISTYN MAY

ASSISTANT COACH, 16th SEASON

• 2012 AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year

The 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year, Christyn May has worked under Bulldog head coach Jim Boos in each of his 15 years at the UMD helm, spending the past 13 seasons as a fulltime assistant after serving in a volunteer coaching role in 2002 and 2003. May came to the Bulldogs following a four-year stint at her alma mater, the University of Nebraska–Omaha. She began on the Mavericks’ sidelines as a student assistant before continuing as a graduate assistant, and ultimately serving as a volunteer assistant coach. May has also served as the head coach for the Duluth Area Junior Olympic volleyball team since 2004.

A native of Palisade, Nebraska, May graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1994 before beginning a four-year career (1994-97) at Nebraska-Omaha. During that stretch, she was the Mavericks’ starting outside hitter on a pair of NCC-Champion clubs. The Mavericks twice advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight during May’s tenure as a player, and claimed the NCAA II National Title when she was a junior. A member of the Elite Eight All-Tournament Team in 1996 and 1997, May played one year of basketball (1998-99) following the conclusion of her volleyball playing career and captained the Mavericks in her one year of duty. May is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education (with a specialization in exercise science) from Nebraska-Omaha in 1999. She also owns a Master’s degree in education from UMD (2008). May and her husband Justin make their home in Hermantown, Minn. with their one son Henry.

KATE STERNS

ASSISTANT COACH, 3rd SEASON

• 2013 AVCA & Daktronics National Player of the Year

One of the most decorated athletes in UMD history and feared players at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II level, Kate Sterns (Lange) returns to the Bulldog ranks, this time as a fulltime assistant coach under the tutelage of Jim Boos for a third year after completing a two-year graduate assistant stint previously. Before landing back on the Bulldog bench, Sterns made a brief appearance in the pro circuit playing overseas for one season with the Terville Florange Olympic Club, which is a member of France’s top pro league. She racked up 166 kills on 471 attacks with 225 digs in 66 sets (2.83 points per set) in 22 matches in her lone season making her the only Bulldog to ever sign a pro contract and play professionally.

8

• Three-time All-American (AVCA & Daktronics) • All-time UMD Career Kills Leader (2,078)

Sterns attended Hibbing High School before starting all four years as an outside attacker for UMD, which made an appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament every season. Her outstanding career concluded with American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Daktronics National Player of the Year honors in her senior campaign. A three-time All-American selection and four-year All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member, she rewrote the record books at UMD placing herself atop the charts in kills (2,078) and attacks (4,058) and positioned herself in a club of her own for her all-around versatility attaining the plateau of 2,000 kills, 1,000 digs, 100 solo blocks and 100 service aces. In addition to coaching duties at the college stage, Sterns spends time on the sidelines developing youth players for the Minnesota North Volleyball Club. A native of Hibbing, Minn., Sterns earned her Bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2013 and completed her Master’s degree at UMD as well in Education. Sterns resides in Duluth, Minn. with her husband Michael.

The UMD volleyball program continues to exceed its own standards for individual success. After a 2013 season that saw four Bulldogs receive All-American honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), highlighted by unanimous National Player of the Year, outside hitter Kate Lange (’13), UMD took another step forward and saw six players earn All-America recognition: setter Ashley Hinsch, libero Julie Rainey, middle blockers Monica Turner and Sydnie Mauch, and outside hitters Mariah Scharf and Maddy Siroin. Hinsch continued that success in 2015, earning her fourth All-America nod from AVCA, becoming just the second Bulldog to ever accomplish that feat, joining Vicky Braegelmann (’07) in accomplishing one of the most decorated careers in UMD history. Braegelmann, the only four-time AVCA All-America First Team selection (2004-07) in UMD history, added a second team nod from Daktronics in 2006 and a first team selection from that same entity in 2007. As a senior in 2007, Braegelmann ripped 449 kills while hitting .367 for the year with 76 blocks en route to claiming the Honda Division II Athlete of the Year Award — the only Bulldog athlete in any sport to do so, though Lange earned the distinction of finalist in 2013. Since the arrival of head coach Jim Boos in 2002, UMD has had 22 different individuals land All-American status (first team, second team, third team or honorable mention) from either the AVCA or D2CCA (formerly Daktronics). With several Bulldogs snagging multiple All-America nods during the same season, those 22 players have combined to bring home 52 All-America awards— including a whopping 21 selections to the AVCA’s first team. Not only has UMD compiled a staggering amount of All-America honors, but the Bulldogs have placed at least one representative on a nationally recognized All-America team each of the past 15 years. Prior to 2002, Jodi Jost was the only All-American in UMD volleyball history. The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native became the first Bulldog to take home such a prestigious honor, landing a second team nod from the AVCA as a senior in 1996. A two-time All-NSIC selection, Jost ranks in UMD’s top ten in career solo blocks (57).

UMD BULLDOGS ALL-CENTRAL REGION HONOREES

While UMD has been cranking out All-Americans since 1996, the Bulldogs began producing AVCA All-Region selections 10 years earlier. Shelia Browne and Rachel Howard were the first to earn AllRegion honors. Each landed a first team selection in 1986 while leading the Bulldogs to a mark of 45-19. Browne, Howard and the rest of the UMD squad ran the table (12-0) in the NSIC to claim the seventh of the Bulldogs’ 23 NSIC titles. Howard banged home 600 kills on 1,556 swings for the 1986 season. It’s safe to assume Browne, the team’s primary setter, was in on the vast majority of those kills. Browne finished the season with 897 assists and 126 total blocks. Three decades has come and gone since that dynamic duo got the ball rolling on UMD All-Region selections but the Bulldogs have done over that stretch of time is come up with 41 more all-region caliber players and placed at least one individual on an all-region team in the last 18 seasons dating back to 1998. After the 2015 campaign, the Bulldogs produced a third fourtime all-region pick as setter Ashley Hinsch (2012-15) added her name to the ranks with right side hitter Vicky Braegelmann (200407) and setter Katie Gangelhoff (2005-08).

In 2014, UMD was represented on the AVCA All-Central Region team with a program-high six Bulldogs who went on to earn AllAmerican status: Hinsch, middle blockers Sydnie Mauch and Monica Turner, libero Julie Rainey, outside hitter Mariah Scharf and right side hitter Maddy Siroin. Hinsch, selected the Region’s Player of the Year by Daktronics, was joined by Rainey, Scharf and Turner on the Daktronics All-Region teams. Head coach Jim Boos was the region’s Coach of the Year as well.

THOUSAND-KILL CLUB

A milestone that many attackers try to reach, the Bulldogs have commonly entered themselves into a lucrative group of outstanding hitters who have reached 1,000 kills in their careers. The program’s first to accomplish the feat was Linda Nicoski back in 1987. Since her initial inception, 18 more Bulldogs have etched their names into the 1,000-kill club. In fact, the club has expanded recently as five Bulldogs eclipsed that quadruple-digit mark within the last six years with the most recent being Sydnie Mauch, who did that just last year. In 2006, Rachel Langseth made her final kill of her collegiate career a memorable one as it placed her exactly on the illustrious milestone. Joleyn Young held UMD’s distinctive honor as top gunner for nearly 13 years after her final collegiate season in 1991 until Callie Zwettler claimed the top spot in 2004. To no ones surprise, the top two placeholders are UMD’s most distinguished players in Kate Lange and Vicky Braegelmann. Between the two of them they have combined for 13 All-American honors, 25 All-Region nods and have both received volleyball’s most prestigious accolade in the American Coaches Volleyball Association Player of the Year award.
