Adding to this year’s excitement is this opportunity to highlight the School of Music’s major performances, faculty recitals and guest appearances while also celebrating the inspiring achievements of our amazing faculty and students.

Together with the rest of our imaginative offerings, this festival embodies the School of Music’s commitment to three core pillars that we believe are crucial to the future success of our students and to the continued viability of the art form that we so cherish: broad intellectual and artistic engagement with the campus, the community, and the world around us; a spirit of entrepreneurship that infuses the bold endeavors of our faculty and students and reflects the innovative skills needed to succeed as a musician in the 21st century;

The Maryland Opera Studio presents Weill’s Street Scene, a work that brilliantly combines elements of opera and musical theater and that is widely acknowledged as one of the composer’s masterpieces. Set in a crowded tenement in 1940s New York City, the opera portrays life among a diverse group of working-class immigrants and the climactic events of one sweltering summer day. Based on a story by Elmer Rice with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Street Scene addresses social justice issues, race and the complexity of human relationships.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO UMD Professor Irina Muresanu

Associate Professor Irina Muresanu’s most recent album, “Four Strings Around the World,” says a lot about her approach to teaching violin. The recording grew out of a project exploring the highly diverse sounds and evocative colors of the solo violin in music of different world cultures. It features folk-inspired works by, among others, composers of Romanian, German, Indian, Chinese, Iranian and Native American descent, including two pieces that were commissioned by Muresanu with the help of a Creative and Performing Arts Award from UMD. Encompassing the music of four continents, the scope reflects Muresanu’s own international pedigree as a Romanian-born violinist who has taught largely in the U.S. and whose prolific career has taken her to prestigious concert venues across the globe.

with their adventurous and skilled playing, they’re turning their passion for music into fighting hunger. Last year, they initiated a Music for Food concert series to support hunger relief. Part of a nationwide initiative, Music for Food strives to end hunger through donationbased concerts. Musicians receive no fee to play, and concert tickets are free with a donation encouraged. The Omer Quartet presented one concert each semester, featuring works by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Bach, with 100% of the proceeds going to the UMD Campus Pantry and the Elizabeth House of Laurel. Plans for 2018-19 concerts are currently in the works. Comprising the School of Music’s Graduate Fellowship String Quartet, violinists Mason Yu and Erica Tursi, violist Jinsun Hong, and cellist Alex Cox have the opportunity to foster their careers as members of an emerging string quartet and also to give back to the community.

“THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC ENCOURAGES US TO EXPLORE, AND THIS IS A REALLY GREAT WAY FOR MUSIC TO MAKE PEOPLE’S LIVES BETTER.”
