A stirring play about a Black farmer, who opposes the Vietnam War, and his indomitable spirit And a celebratory orchestral program inspired by African American spirituals and jazz, featuring the work of iconic American composers Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin.

These are just some of the performances in The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s powerful and bold 25th Anniversary Season As the United States enters its 250th year, we ’ re spotlighting unheard histories and unforgettable voices, representing many of the key communities that have played a critical role in this country’s history. A diverse group of artists will offer insights into the joys, struggles, hopes and uncertainties tied to the American experience These are American Stories

Events in this Guide

The UMD School of Music offers a vibrant lineup of performances that explore the intersection between traditional masterworks and less familiar works by composers of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies’ productions tell stories from various global perspectives and arise from interdisciplinary collaborations On stage, you will see dance that defies conventional storytelling and theater that explores issues of race, gender and class in a variety of historical and contemporary settings.

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center or “The Clarice” at the University of Maryland is the innovative and collaborative home for UMD’s School of Music (SOM); the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) and The Clarice’s own artistic platform, Clarice Presents, as well as The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL). Together they create a welcoming, collaborative and socially-conscious community for students, artists and patrons The Clarice leverages creativity, innovation, research and engagement and the powerful resources of the university to inspire and support artists, audiences and students while driving positive change in its community. The Clarice nurtures and preserves creative and individual freedoms, acts as a leading cultural change agent and contributes to the future of the arts on campus, locally and nationally

Community Engagement Volunteer Opportunities for Students!

Graduate and undergraduate students can enhance their personal and professional development and make a positive impact by getting involved in Clarice Presents’ community engagement programs. Whether by volunteering with Only Make Believe or Solutions in Hometown Connections, or through community-based learning that is part of our Voices of Prince George’s County work, students can gain invaluable experience while enriching the community through arts participation. No arts experience necessary!

Movements of melancholia give way to an energetic and euphoric conclusion that shows that regardless of his experiences Tchaikovsky was determined to be happy This performance will also feature Márquez's scintillating Danzón No. 2 and Ravel’s mythical ballet, Daphnis et Chloé
