ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS THAT FUEL INNOVATION AND GROWTH The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center provides a unique blueprint for arts collaboration among academic units, a university-based presenting program and community partners that together elevate and energize the performing arts at Maryland. This form of arts integration ensures that we engage students, faculty, staff and patrons in our process of art making and presenting that fosters expression, unlocks creativity and generates curiosity, investigation and innovation. The arts create new approaches and insights for empathy and understanding our diverse, pluralistic and rapidly changing world. As a public research institution, we investigate and present art representative of our multicultural society and that celebrates and shares the work of women and underrepresented minorities. This year’s season includes beloved classics and new works illustrating themes that include female empowerment, the celebration of life, racism, family, toxic masculinity, LGBTQ+ representation, and yes, the current political climate. Visit us to participate in building the future of the arts while deeply experiencing student and professional work unique to the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region.
Bonnie Thornton Dill Dean & Professor, College of Arts & Humanities
Music, theater, dance and more, this multi-arts presenting center stages art powered by innovative student and faculty artists, as well as awe-inspiring visiting artists.

The UMD SCHOOL OF THEATRE, DANCE, AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES advances and transforms the research and practice of these disciplines through a commitment to excellence and innovative education in the performing arts. This season’s theater and dance productions celebrate the power of women in various contexts today and throughout history with the continued focus on highlighting themes that deeply resonate with society through the performing arts. The Visit Written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt Translated by Maruice Valency Brian MacDevitt, director Leigh Wilson Smiley, acting coach Kendra Portier, choreographer Set in the fictitious town of Güllen, this allegorical dark comedy tells the story of a woman’s revenge on a community that cast her out when she was pregnant and impoverished. The play arcs from absurdist to barbarous in order to question what happens when civil ethics, personal morality, patriarchal rule, justice and democracy go amok.

A Doll House Written by Henrik Ibsen Mitchell Hébert, director Performed by an all-female cast, this production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House questions the roles that society assigns to men and women. This fresh perspective on the classic play encourages audiences to question what has changed since 19th-century Europe through the interpretations of six women actors playing male and female characters.

Noises Off Written by Michael Frayn Lisa Nathans, director Tensions run high as Lloyd Dallas, the director of this play’s play-within-a-play, struggles to prepare his accident-prone cast for the opening of British bedroom comedy Nothing On. Missed cues, jealous lovers, a lost contact lens and a troublesome plate of sardines all conspire to ruin the performance. Michael Frayn’s award-winning farce details the hilarity that ensues behind-thescenes of a theatrical production.

The MICHELLE SMITH PERFORMING ARTS LIBRARY (MSPAL) at UMD is a lab of inspiration for faculty, staff, students and community. As the central home of music, theater and dance materials on campus, it also houses a variety of performing arts special collections, preserving unique materials related to performance, education, recordings and scholarship. MSPAL strives to reimagine the library experience, coming to life through pop-up performances, plays, musical events and lectures, and providing spaces and services to enable the creative process from conception through presentation.
EXPLORE THE GALLERY AT MSPAL THIS SEASON! “Inspired! Jim Henson at Maryland” Exhibit open through May 26, 2020 This exhibit is a window into the profound impact Jim Henson’s experiences on campus had on his creative and professional development, laying the foundation for a remarkable career that included the creation of the Muppets and beyond. It features 25 pieces of original art created by Henson, theatrical programs and ephemera, photographs and an interactive digital archive of Henson’s sketchbooks, student projects and press clippings from The Jim Henson Company Archives, Special Collections in Performing Arts and UMD’s University Archives. Video clips from the 1950s and 1960s demonstrate the breadth of Henson’s genius, already evident in his early work on local Washington television.
