UK THEATRE TRAINING AND EVENTS

Welcome Welcome to UK Theatre’s Training and Events programme for Autumn / Winter 2018. This season we are launching two new courses to enable you to future-proof your organisation and help the industry to thrive. The Business of Inclusion (p17) delivered by Paul Anderson-Walsh and Deborah Sawyerr of The Centre for Inclusive Leadership explores the irresistible link between inclusion, profit and performance. Making Change Happen (p23) delivered by Lucy Kerbel of Tonic Theatre will provide you with tools to achieve enduring change. These two new courses complement our popular modular courses focused on d/Deaf and Disabled Access for audiences and workforce (p14) led by Michèle Taylor of Ramps on the Moon, and our suite of Dignity at Work (p16) training, designed to help you create more supportive workplaces. Look out for the launch of our new series of What Works Webinars (p25), practical chaired discussions with your peers and experts on key topics. Keep an eye on our Training and Events email updates and follow @uk_theatre to stay informed of further announcements. UK Theatre training, conferences and events are open to everyone. Claire Owen, HR Manager at Birmingham Royal Ballet, talks to us about her career and shares her life lessons. Tell us about your early life. What were your goals and dreams?

EDUCATION 1981 - 1988 HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, GLOUCESTER O LEVELS / A LEVELS

1996 - 1998 UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Maybe not a surprise - I studied ballet from the age of five, so my first ambition was to be a ballerina. I auditioned for the Royal Ballet School but was unsuccessful and at that point, dancing became a hobby along with acting, singing and some choreography in the local am-dram society for many years. For one season I choreographed and performed as a cheerleader for Gloucester Rugby Club, cannot top an audience of 12,000! Home for me is in Gloucester, where I have grown up and currently live, commuting to the day job in Birmingham. Talk us through your career journey to date.

Photo: Ty Singleton

After A Levels I joined a local insurance company, Ecclesiastical Insurance, where I worked in many roles for twenty-six years. Starting in payroll then personnel, I worked my way up the ladder to roles such as HR Operations Manager and HR Business Partner for UK and Ireland. I took a voluntary redundancy option in 2014 and took a year off work. In 2015 I started at the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

6

I am proud to have worked with and supported colleagues on their development/careers. Seeing people grow personally and professionally before your eyes is the best feeling ever. What are you most proud of in your career so far? The development of others. I have been lucky to lead teams and work with many line managers on their own leadership skills. Various HR / Insurance roles

2000 - 2009 What are you working on now? I am working on the integration of a new HR system into Birmingham Royal Ballet along with integrating General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) changes. Moving forward I will be looking at developing our apprenticeship offering as well as diversity and inclusion. Ongoing, I work with my colleagues on developing their skills and behaviours, hopefully making a difference.

A day in the life: John Duncan John Duncan, Stage Manager at Scottish Opera, tells us about a day in his life.

Photo: Jane Hobson

I’ve always loved telling people about what a stage manager does – it’s very common for people to be surprised that it’s a real job! When we are in a theatre, I typically lead a backstage team of five people. Between us, we cue all of the scenery changes, lighting effects, singers coming to the stage and so on. We ensure that all the props are where they ought to be, in good condition and ready for use; and keep the backstage area safe, free of trip hazards and fire risks.

Most of my job, though, happens long before we get anywhere near a theatre. Part of my responsibility is to ensure that we complete everything we need to during the rehearsal period. This means keeping the creative team, singers, musicians and stage crew on track, ensuring that we have enough time to bring everything together. I didn’t know too much about opera when I started; I had done a bit, but this was different. The main difference is simply the sheer number of people involved – on stage, in the chorus, in the orchestra

– and the logistical challenges that brings. My first opera at Scottish Opera was Sir David McVicar’s Der Rosenkavalier, which was a baptism of fire! David is so exciting to work with and I learnt from him that it’s vital to listen to your gut when making decisions about what should happen on stage. In the rehearsal room, one of the things I have to do is work out the logistics of sets. If a designer wants us to bring a large piece of furniture on stage it has to fit through the spaces left by the set in the wings – or it has to be dismantled and then reassembled on stage. We have had to come up with some interesting solutions in the past to ensure that beds, wardrobes and other large items can be handled safely. It feels like trying to work out how to get a series of camels through the eye of an oddly-shaped needle – and it usually has to happen in under 90 seconds and in complete silence. We have recently finished our run of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and it’s been a total pleasure to work on. In a first for Scottish Opera, this production featured George, a 15.5 hand horse and it’s been fantastic! Having George on stage posed a number of challenges, as part of the set had to be structurally strengthened to take his weight. The area around the stage is on a

steel deck which becomes very echoey, so we had to come up with a way to reduce the noise – we used layers and layers of black carpet to deaden the sound of George’s hooves while he walked around backstage. One of the hardest things he had to do was step down through a French window on to the stage. It took quite a few attempts for him to work out what he was doing with his feet, but it was amazing to watch an “I am animal learn like that!

We can be away for up to four weeks at a time when we are touring with a show. We tend to share self-catering flats and whilst it’s a lot of hard work, it’s fun. I’m always really impressed at the new generations of singers we are working with. It so grateful seems as if they can do every day to be anything: they can sing, they can act, they can For a performance at 7.15pm, in the profession dance. We ask a lot of George arrived in his trailer at I’m in” our artists and I feel very the theatre at 6pm. Top Ten Tips for... EMBEDDING EQUALITY FOR d/DEAF AND DISABLED PEOPLE INTO YOUR THEATRE Michèle Taylor, UK Theatre Board Member and Director for Change for Ramps on the Moon shares her thoughts.

1

2

3

TRAIN ALL STAFF in Disability Equality (from a disabled person) and at least your front of house staff in Deaf Awareness (the training team must include a Deaf person). PUT ACCESS AND INCLUSION as a standing item on agendas at every level and across your organisation.

CONVENE A USER GROUP OF d/DEAF AND DISABLED PEOPLE Be clear about what their remit is and how much influence they have; and listen to them; also consider how they will be remunerated.

4

ENSURE YOUR RECRUITMENT PRACTICES HAVE A WIDE REACH State explicitly that you want applications from d/Deaf and disabled people, including accepting applications in a variety of formats.

5

CONCESSIONS Devise a coherent and easy to implement policy on concessionary ticket pricing.

6 WEBSITE Ensure your website meets at least basic accessibility standards.

7 MAKE BOOKING TICKETS AS STRAIGHTFORWARD AS POSSIBLE Ensure that box office staff are confident in giving information and asking questions appropriately.

8 ENSURE THAT STAFF HAVE THE INFORMATION THEY NEED TO PROVIDE AN APPROPRIATE SERVICE Make sure that key information, for example, booking Sign Language Interpreters, does not sit with just one person.

9 WHEN IN DOUBT, JUST ASK

Always remember that the person in front of you is just that - a person.

10 JUST DO IT Don’t wait until you think

you’ve got everything right, or until you feel you know everything you need to know: take risks, embrace the mistakes, and be open to learning.
