Growth

From Fall 2008 to Fall 2012, the College of Communication and Information has experienced nearly 46% growth in total college enrollments, compared to the University’s 7.82% growth.

The College of Communication and Information is one of the two fastest growing colleges at the University of Kentucky.

CI undergraduate enrollment alone experienced a 45.6% increase in students served.

Due in part to participation in the UKCore, the Division of Instructional Communication and the Department of Communication experienced an 88% increase in students served.

Student Success

Enhancing the Student Experience •

Within the past year, the number of student ambassadors has increased from 2 to 6, including one graduate student ambassador.

There are currently over 20 graduate and undergraduate student organizations and interest groups active in the College, providing the opportunity to develop both professional and personal connections with peers and colleagues.

The Kentucky Kernel was named the best college newspaper in the state in the Kentucky Press Association’s annual competition. The Kernel has won this honor 9 of the past 10 years.

The Journalism program finished 10th in the national Hearst News Writing Competition.

The Multimodal Communication Consulting Center (MC3), a prototype lab for the QEP Presentation U!, serves students across the university by providing one-on-one tutoring consultations and workshops regarding effective multimodal communication presentations.

Kentucky High School Speech League returns to UK’s campus after a 30 year absence and attracts 862 of Kentucky’s best and brightest potential recruits from over 90 high schools. Furthermore, Fall 2012 marked the addition of a competitive college speech team to complete the CI Forensics team (both speech and debate competitions).

University of Kentucky’s new undergraduate academic initiative iNET, hosted by the College of Communication and Information, is the first to bring a focus on training future leaders and entrepreneurs.

13.36% of the College’s 2012 graduates studied abroad during their time at UK compared to 11.62% of the UK Class of 2012 as a whole (undergraduate programs).

Fall 2008 through Spring 2012, CI has had a 91.6% success rate.

At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, there was less than a 2% rate of unsuccessful completion.

Successful advising and student mentoring is reflected in the 84.3% retention of freshman from their first semester to their second semester.

For Fall 2012, the College of Communication and Information ranked #6 in terms of entering freshmen admitted to the University Honors Program.

The College of Communication and Information is proud to have over 175 First Generation students enrolled in our undergraduate programs.

Over 80% of 2011-2012 seniors majoring in communication participated in a professional internship prior to graduation.

In the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, 184 majors completed for-credit internships in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Graduation rates are above that of the University, with the College awarding 263 bachelor’s degrees and 92 graduate degrees for 2011-2012.

The School of Library Science has produced 435 master’s degrees over the last five years, or 6.8% of total master’s degrees campus-wide.

Student Success Enhancing the Student Experience (continued) •

The College of Communication and Information offers one of only 109 accredited programs by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the only accredited program in library and information science in Kentucky.

The Division of Instructional Communication holds 4 sections of CIS 110 and 111 specifically for registration of First Generation Students.

The College is piloting a new course on “Strategic Business and Organizational Communication” through a partnership with the Gatton Business School (CIS 300).

As of Fall 2012, the Department of Communication is the only unit in the University to offer upper division courses to meet the UKCore requirement of Intellectual Inquiry in the Social Science.

In response to concerns about career orientation beyond UK, the undergraduate communication curriculum was revised to include several very specific professional tracks: Business and Organizational Communication, Health Communication, Digital and Mass Communication, Communication Honors, and a Communication University Honors joint program.

Through CIS 590, we offer undergraduate apprenticeship teaching assistant opportunities for exceptional students to get credit for the experience of working with a primary instructor.

Technology of Learning Integration of Resources to Improve Higher Education •

The College offered 26 distance learning courses for Fall 2012 and is one of only six established DL Programs.

Currently, 48% of information requests and 19% of applications for the LIS program come from Google Ads (see graph below).

Creation of COMMTV (a searchable, streamable, archive of television over the past 5 years) which now facilitates extramural funding with USDHS, CDC, and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), with the intention of commercialization.

CI is now regularly active on 3 social media platforms and has begun an assessment of the usage and content of electronic and internetbased communication with alumni and donors.

Development Investments and Networking to Enhance Growth and Success •

The CI Phonathon has raised record-breaking amounts over the last four years.

CI has awarded over $412,000 in student scholarships over the past four years all generated from private gifts to scholarships and endowments.

CI has put in place 28 endowments over the past four years.

CI received its largest bequest of $300,000 to date from Jack Guthrie a ’63 Journalism Alumnus.

CI has in place four RCTF matched endowments.

CI’s private gift count has increased from 1,155 in 10-11 to 1,829 in 11-12 and our donor count has increased from 1,017 to 1,050.

The membership of the CI National Advisory Board has increased to 20 members and has now been in place for two years. Twelve of the 20 members have established endowments, scholarships, fellowships, bequest, or hosted an event to raise funds in support of the College.

The College continues to use newsletters to communicate with alumni from all units: 10,250 JAT alumni, 2,803 COM graduates, 750 SLIS graduates and over 400 Graduate Program in Communication graduates.

Outreach Faculty Endeavors that Strengthen Student Learning •

The University’s QEP (Presentation U: YOU are the ultimate presentation) was developed by CI faculty to reaffirm the need for multimodal communication across the curriculum.

We have grown from 15 active grants in 2009-2010 to 28 active grants in 2011-2012. Six students in the Graduate Program in Communication are authored on grant research.

College faculty taught 6 study abroad courses in 2011-2012: London, England, Florence and Rome, Italy, and Cape Town, South Africa.

The School of Journalism and Telecommunications is in the 5th year of a PEPFAR-funded partnership with journalism organizations in Zambia and Botswana; 6 faculty members participate in this program.

CI Consulting, a college-wide business, will be launched in January 2013. The initiative will offer workshops and executive education programs to people in business and industry seeking to improve communication skills needed for success in a global and technology-intensive marketplace.
