INTENSI-T SIGNS RECORD DEAL TO A MAJOR T

he phenomenon that is Intensi-T; very much understated but extraordinarily vocal with heavy, hard hitting beats fused with epic harmonies and thumping bass-lines bellowing from his vocal cords. With just a microphone and a loop pedal, entire songs created with just the mouth, it has to be seen to be believed. Congratulations on your music deal, tell us about this, how did it come about? “I’ve just signed a worldwide deal with Universal Music; it’s been a long journey looking back on it, to get to this point, but I’ve just taken every month as it comes. So, it really feels like it’s the next natural step of progression for what I’m doing. It feels very right...great team I’m working with too.” What’s your likes and dislikes about the music industry? “I love how you don’t need anyone apart from yourself and the internet to establish yourself as a musician. We have the internet and with YouTube and Twitter you can let people know about who you are with very little effort....It’s pretty cool. Dislikes, probably how people look into it from outside and think it’s all glamorous but really there’s so much hard work that goes into it and people really only see the end result!” What’s your musical sound? “I like to call it, happy hip hop. It’s entirely intensi-t | 8

made from my mouth so it sounds like what it is - beatbox. I like to think its pretty uplifting music too. Feel Good!” We see you’ve performed in front of large crowds, what’s your most embarrassing moment? “I did a festival in Surrey and it was on my birthday and after my set the host decided to get all 20,000 people to sing to me, Happy 20th Birthday, whilst I stood there on stage. Felt so awkward!” Who are you listening to at the moment on your ipod? “On repeat I have ‘Problems’ by Asap Rocky, its so gangster, real head nodding song, ha ha. Other things in my recently

played section are Ben Howard, Example and Lionel Richie - Varied!”

QUICK FIRE 5

What have you got coming up what should we look out for? “A lot of new YouTube videos with my loop pedal! And touring, Derby University Student Union 1st October - Sheffield , The Plug 2nd October Norwich Waterfront (So Solid Crew Tour) 3rd October- Birmingham , The Institute 4th October- Manchester , The Ritz 17th October- Staffordshire University Students Union 9th November- Skegness, Butlins with Professor Green so there’s a lot happening stay tuned!!!” @intensi-t

MINI HAYE interview

XFACTOR FOUND DUO MK1 CATCH UP WITH UKB T

he multi-talented, London based duo, Charlie and Sim, joined forces two years ago mixing traditional dubstep with mainstream production. They then became a household name after reaching the final 12 in the much talked about, X Factor in 2012 and have been touring ever since. Becoming one of the most in demand live acts since the show began. We hear your finishing off your album, tell us about it. What can we expect? Any big names? The album is sounding sooo sick. We have around 25 songs recorded & we still have more to record, lol. We will soon pick the best 14/15 for the album. We’ve been working with industry heavyweight producers, Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran), Rob Davis (Kylie Minogue), & Skripture (Angel) to name but a few. You’ve probably been asked a 1000 times, but why the name MK1? Charlie - Haha, probably more than a 1000 now! Everyone seems to think MK1 is a postcode or something very meaningful to us – it’s actually in fact just the model of my Piano. Sim - No way, all this time I thought it was because Charlie’s first love was from Milton Keynes, lol!!!

How was your overall X Factor experience? Pretty damn intense. But overall we loved it, so glad we decided to audition last minute. The XF is a platform most can easily underestimate; you gain experience & exposure that money can’t buy. How did it feel when the X Factor panel told you to ditch your 3rd member, or was that all staged, lool? Charlie – No, we can honestly say it wasn’t staged. That horrendous look on my face was for real, haha. It was a bitter pill to swallow, mostly because it was in a very awkward situation. Being forced to make any decision under pressure is horrible. I can’t even decide what I want to order in a restaurant under pressure. Sim - It was so hard to digest. I still can’t look back at that footage, too emotional.

To prosper in the ever changing jungle that is the music business, one needs to have the experience and character strong enough to keep up with the times, whilst experimenting with their own musical identity to strengthen their own craft and verifying image. M.I.N.I Haye may have seen the highs and lows of what the industry has to offer but nothing looks to stop him cementing his presence in the underground scene this 2013. Proudly debuting his solo video ‘McQueen’ M.I.N.I Haye’s smooth beats and illustrative lyrics marks the arrival of the experienced, young talent that London has to offer. M.I.N.I will be working on a number of projects this year he also has a new single, “Perfect Chick” which is available for download on iTunes. @minihaye We were lucky enough to have such a good friend who did not feel bitter about the situation & confidently give us his blessing to progress as a two-piece. Your single LET GO is out now, how’s that going? What was it like shooting the video? Sim - The single went well for us. It was an independent release, literally something to give back to the fans. We had overwhelming support from a lot of video channels (MTV, Flava, Chartshow TV, etc). Shooting the video was crazy, the best house party ever. Big up, Vertex (Marvell Crew) for such a sick job directing. What can we expect from you two in the future? Sim - Big tours, a very big album and a very successful worldwide takeover. @mk1official UKSBIGGEST.COM | 9

INTERVIEW

WEST LONDON RAISED J LYNCH J

Lynch is among the UK’s rising Hip Hop artists. Hitting number 5 on Youtube’s top UK Hip Hop charts. The multitalented Singer, Rapper and Songwriter groomed his talents in the playgrounds of North West London influenced by the early 00’s grime scene. He spent his time free styling to beats played on a Nokia 6230. Admired for his off the wall and deep-rooted lyrical content, as well as his quick-witted responses. Who would we find on your music play lists? “A bit of everything from Nirvana to Ghetts, oh and my old unreleased tapes (haha)” What have been your biggest achievements to date? “It depends, but in music I think it would be persisting in making what I love and starting to ring bells all over the UK urban scene. I’ve never had to conform. If you read in between the lines I’d say that’s an achievement in itself ;). Other important achievements would be having a few number one hits on the underground scene, song of the week ‘Hill Joy’ on BBC radio 1 and 1xtra!” Who would you like to collaborate with? “In no particular order; Kid Cudi, Noel Gallagher, Roots Manuva and Andre 3000! Imagine those artists on an album track list.” (wipes sweat off forehead) What’s your likes and dislikes about the music industry? “I dislike how it is catered to the public eye. It has a bit of a kaleidoscope effect on who it wants to push as the ‘in thing’... Commercial music is a bit sh*t now too, the standards of what is considered as, ‘Good Music’, has dropped. Let’s try to change that. What I really like is how far we have come as a UK scene in the past 10 years, a bit more support from each other and who knows where this could go. P.S. Dizzee spun Big Sean on that Jessie J track...Team UK!” (lol) What’s the connection between you

and Mega? And how did this come about? “Mega is part of my management team. We get on quite well too, from one artist to another. One geezer called Gavin heard my music, gave him a demo and tracked my progress, he made the connect and voila, onwards and upwards.” What’s your definition of success? “For some it’s to leave a mark, change the way the world thinks. If I ever get the opportunity to do so then great, but it’s not a conscious aim. I think there are many kinds of success. For me, doing what I love and loving what I do as cliché as it sounds (and making a bit of gwalla gwalla from it….) is success. Imagine prospering from your talents and then looking after your loved ones from it, what a blessing!” Your EP named WTYHMA is out now, what’s your best track from this and why? “My favourite track off, ‘Wait Til You Hear My Album’ is, ‘Ali R U OK?’ Its music for the soul and the message in that song has touched a lot of people. I just rapped my heart out on that track and the direction of it is left open for interpretation, just like a lot of my music.” When is your album releasing? “Not sure, you’ll know when it’s coming.” Anything else coming up? “Already polishing the next project, I think you’ll really like this one. @lynchuncut

CATCH THAT SPECIAL PERSON AND KEEP THEM

By Louise Baker

ating isn’t easy. We’ve all been there... that awkward first meal, going to the cinema or out for drinks. When you have an extra couple of drinks to calm those nerves, but at the bottom of the glass you’re a little worse for wear. Questions like, what should I wear? Will they like me? Awkward silence and not knowing how to break it, Should I lie about what I do for a living or where I live. Here are some tips to help.

D

Don’t come across as needy, unstable, aggressive and undesirable. It’s not attractive to talk about how much you like that person after a few hours of meeting them. Keep all conversation topics positive and don’t go into your own faults.

Go on a date to the Aquarium, Bowling, Ice Skating or Sightseeing. All places where you can relax and have a good time creating good vibes. There’s no risk of conversation shortage on an active date. You will both have a giggle and have more chance of a second date. A date at the cinema isn’t ideal as you won’t have much of an opportunity to see each other in the dark let alone speak, a meal is risky as there’s the chance of conversation shortage.

Groom yourself and dress to impress, do not show up in your every day casual clothes. Make an effort, (take a look at our fashion pages for help).

Don’t forget the traditional rules of dating. Like the male paying, although modern day means women can pay for themselves, it is a lovely gesture when the man grabs the bill. Always act like a gentlemen and a lady. Do not cry on a date or drink too much. Ladies don’t apply any makeup or pick at clothes or nails in front of your date. Avoid flirting or long conversation with others, it’s rude. Always be on time and don’t show public displays of affection as your date may feel uncomfortable.

Never alter who you are to appeal more to your date, that’s a recipe for disaster. By pretending to be someone you’re not you’re attracting the wrong type of person for yourself and the relationship would be doomed from the start. Then if you do really like that person you have the awkwardness of either covering up or coming clean, neither is ideal.

Don’t speak about yourself the whole time, do ask your date questions showing your interested in that person and don’t spend the night bragging about who you are, what you have and what you do... that’s defiantly not attractive. Talk about who you are today, interests, goals for the future. Keep it positive.

interview

Giggs speaks about When Will It Stop Describe your swag with 1 word? ZOOOOGA! Football or Games Console? Games Console. What would you buy if you had £5? (Any items up to the value)? Chicken Burger, Chips and Orange Mirinda. Beyoncé, Rihanna or your iPhone? Beyoncé. Twitter, Facebook or Instagram? Facebook.

“That’s when I just thought, wow, I can actually do something with this.”

G

iggs the Peckham bred rapper has now announced his album When Will It Stop will be released Oct 14th. With a string of big names featuring, we have no doubt at all that this album will go down a storm as Giggs also never fails to deliver his art form. When it comes to UK rap it’s safe to say that you opened the doors as you didn’t change your style to fit in the scene at that time, how does that feel? “I wouldn’t say I opened the doors coz there is still a lot of work to be done, it’s like kicking open the door running through and its slamming shut again, you know them ones. The scene needs to be bigger, there needs to be more…” Would you say the UK scene is as a good place? “Yeah definitely, because you have a lot of people getting off the streets and getting money from music. It doesn’t even have to be rapping, people are getting money from producing, shooting videos, photography. Look at SBTV, he started around 2009 and look at him now. People are starting to release; they are capable of doing anything. There’s still more work to be done though, so people need to stop showing off and talking about things that aint even nothing.” giggs | 12

Taking it back a bit but how did it feel when your freestyle, ‘Talking the Hardest’ took the industry by storm? “Yeah, that was a madness for me bruv, I didn’t know where that came from, one minute I was on the road and the next everyone was going crazy over me. Girls where going mad over my freestyle, and they don’t really listen to rap music, and they would never in a million years listen to UK rap. That’s when I just thought, wow, I can actually do something with this.” You’ve been in front of the camera for a while now, how would you say you’ve changed musically and as a person? “Umm, definitely more determined and focused, there a lot of people doubting me and a lot of haters but that keeps me going. There was one stage I was like I just want to get big and buss up the ting, when it started happening, I started thinking wow I can probably open the doors for the streets. I’m

always progressing and coming up with new ideas and drives.” What’s the highlight of your career so far? “Good question, I’ve never thought about that, you know… probably when I got signed to be real with you.” Your album ‘When Will It Stop’ is out OCT the 14TH what can we expect from that? Any big collaboration? “When you’re looking at people like Styles P and Anthony Hamilton, that’s big in its self, these are people that done a lot for the game, you can also catch Ed Sheeran. The album is mad, its fire! It’s just something you haven’t had for long, you know them ones there! Albums are dead now days let’s be honest. When have you ever got a Giggs CD when you had to skips tracks, so when people ask what can you expect from it, you just need to expect Giggs going in again.” @officialgiggs

Yungen Set To Cause Mass Hysteria On 9th September With Money, Doe, Paper

BURWOOD PARK IS MORE THAN JUST MUSIC Burwood Park are a music collective which consist of two talented individuals; Cle, the artist and Vision the producer.

U

p and coming wordsmith Yungen is gearing up to release another banger with his Diztortionproduced bass-heavy cut set to drop on 9th September. It has all the elements of a club smash, with glitchy-synths accompanied by a dance break and a catchy hook to captivate and vastly amplify Yungen’s already expansive fan base. Whats been your biggest achievement to date and why? My biggest achievement so far has been performing at the wireless festival with Krept and Konan. I remember going to wireless a few years ago to watch so to actually be there and perform was massive! Explain whats been your most embarrassing moment in your musical career? Most embarrassing moment in my music career has to be a show in Nottingham. I was on stage performing and the mic was knocked out of my hand and I had to pick it up off the floor mid song. Very embarrassing haha.

Cle, formally known as soldier is an individual whose writing ability emerged when his tendency for explaining things in a vivid and descriptive detail brought tears to the eyes of friends and family members. Cle has transcended in all aspects of life and has honed in on his abilities by writing a book and two feature film screenplays which are currently shelved as they use the music industry to support and elevate themselves before releasing them under their production company Clevision. @BurwoodPark

You’ve worked with a few big names in the industry, who’s been your best collaboration and why? Best collab so far has to be Krept and Konan. Our chemistry in the studio is always natural and easy going, we seem to work very well together.

In studio I usually work on how I feel at the time.. If I’m happy and got a lot of energy that day I usually make my concept be fun. I was happy the day ‘money doe paper’ was made lol. I like to have input to play in everything from writing to videos to production.

If you wasn’t in the music game what would you be doing? If I wasn’t doing music I would probably be trying to still pursue a career in football. Football still has a massive place in my heart.

What can we expect from you in the future? A lot more music.. I’m still trying to find my sound so I will be experimenting by putting out projects until I fully feel I’ve found myself which would mean ALBUM TIME!

We love the video to Money Doe Paper, whats your music making process and how do you fuse it all together?

MONROE BRINGS A HEAVY INFLUENCE TO THE MUSIC SCENE T

he up and coming British girl group ‘Monroe’ is made up of 3 very talented & beautiful young ladies Kelly, KJ and Katy. The girls have been writing and recording their own material for the past couple of years. They describe their music as ‘Pop’ but with a heavy influence from other genres including dubstep and RnB.

How did you all meet? Katy: Kelly and KJ met through a mutual friend, they were later introduced to me through another contact who knew they were looking to start a vocal group. We haven’t looked back since! There are always different personalities. Who is messy, moany and the loudest one? Kelly: I would say we are pretty equal - we are all loud but not really moany types at all, however KJ might get the crown for the messiest! Katy: Yes I agree, none of us moan but we do have crazy personalities and always have hyper moments together! KJ is the messy member, haha! What’s the groups best experience to date? Katy: That’s a tough one! Our first ever gig opening for the Noisettes at the forum for a university freshers ball was an amazing buzz! We had worked very hard and the feeling of being on stage was very rewarding. The New Year was also an amazing experience being

interviewed live on BBC radio the night before a huge performance to such a large audience worldwide was incredible! Kelly: I would say opening the London New Year’s Day parade at the beginning of the year to a global television audience of 28 million and a live street crowd of 500,000. We stayed at a lovely hotel the night before and watched the fireworks from the hotel balcony. The best part however was the drive through the crowd right before our performance ... It was surreal and an amazing feeling! What would we find on your iPod list? Kelly: You would find almost everything under the sun! I love all types of music so my iPod is quite random! Katy: I have such a wide variety of music on mine... The thing I love about music is there is always something to suit your mood! Whether it’s Linkin Park, old school RnB or Lucy Silvas. What future projects do you have coming up? We have our debut EP coming out very

soon as well as videos so stay tuned! What can we expect from your EP? Kelly: Expect something fresh and inspiring with an edge! Katy: A female vocal group with an edge and something different to offer! What’s your best track on the EP and why? Katy: Ooh that’s a tough one but I’m going to say I can’t choose one as they all have a story behind them that is special to us when you have written a song from past experiences or a message that we feel strongly about. I think ‘go home’ has the best memories as it’s the single we have released so far. What else do you have coming up? All: We will be performing at lots of venues all over the UK over the coming months so be sure to like our FB page. www.facebook.com/MonroeUKx and check our events page for all upcoming gigs and events. KREPT & KONAN EXCLUSIVE T

he double act Krept and Konan “Play Dirty” have been putting in crazy work and have released their mixtape Young Kingz. By doing this they have done something unprecedented which was chart in the official chart at top 10. This was done all independently, there is no stopping these two. Congrats on charting with your mixtape Young Kings which was all done independently. What can people that don’t know expect from your mixtape? Konan: You can expect different emotions, songs that are heartfelt, songs that will make you gassed, songs that will make you dance, songs that will make you zone out, songs about girls, inspirational songs I can go on, we tried to touch on everything on one CD

to react, but when they actually say ‘Yeah I’m on it, it shows that you’re doing something and making an impact for them to even want to work with you, coz before they probably would have been like, “who”?

Your video ‘My Story’, is like a mini drama and very descriptive in its content to what happened. How long did it take to film? Krept: We started at 1pm and finished about 10pm, they said it was meant to be a two day shoot, but everyone was on time, we just banged out the scenes, had a little break and yeah man, we wrapped it up.

How do you feel about artists portraying a Champagne life but with a Coca Cola pocket? Konan: You know what, I don’t want to judge people to be fair, but you can try and fake it till you make it, but then at the same time you better make it at the end otherwise you’re just going to look like an idiot at the end of it really. That’s the only way I can put it.

Who’s been your major influences and somebody you would like to work with? Krept: A big influence when we started doing rap was actually Giggs. I actually used to listen to Giggs all the time, when we was doing more grime music, everyone was listening to Giggs at that time, I had all of his mixtapes, his albums, and then we ended up working with him and this is when he was working on his second album and he just got his deal. It’s crazy we reached out and he was on it.

Can you name some Coca Cola poppers? Konan: I don’t know you know, I reckon it’s all smoke and mirrors to be fair. You can see with your eyes who’s really doing things. Anyone can go on Twitter and say they got this or their doing that, or people say how much money they got but their videos look really cheap, so you can really see it for yourself what’s going on. The mainstream is where it’s at, that’s a different ball game to us underground guys.

Were you shocked when he agreed to work with you guys as he was one of your early influences? Krept: To be honest you don’t really know a lot of people personally so you never really know how they are going krept & konan | 16

A question a lot of people would want to ask, whats the most you’ve been paid out of PRS? Krept: LOOOOL, a nice few bags still a NICE few grand still I leave it at that

Would you like to be established more in the commercial scene? Yeah, I feel that the underground is just a stepping stone for us, so hopefully it can get us onto the big staircases worldwide, Grammy, all sorts man. @kreptplaydirty @konanplaydirty

Never in its 18 year history has such a fierce competition been witnessed among MOBO music talent with Laura Mvula and Wiley being nominated in four categories each, immediately followed by Disclosure, Naughty Boy, Rudimental and Wretch 32 with three gongs respectively being put forward to be publicly recognised for their achievements over the past year. One particular highlight of the evening was a surprise performance from past MOBO Award winners; So Solid Crew, who opened the evening with a lively performance of their hit track ‘Oh No’. Jahmene gave a rousing, soulful performance singing an Amy Winehouse classic, ‘Back to Black’, while Fuse ODG and the CEO Dancers (Britain’s Got Talent) came together in an explosive AfroBeats collaboration which had all the audience on their feet to his hit track ‘Azonto’. @MOBOAwards

rant of the month Now I don’t mean to be picky but can someone kindly explain to me what females of today are playing at? What possesses a woman to destroy, dismantle and remove the eyebrows that she currently owns to then use her JSA to buy crayola and replace them, walking around looking like your angry, happy, confused and scared all at the same time. A friend of mine, no names mentioned (Tasheequa), suffers from this same problem but I don’t front, I’m just waiting for her to upset my good spirit one day so I can lick both thumbs and sort out the mistakes on her face... What are friend for, aye? And it doesn’t stop there not only are they using their children’s arts and crafts kits to do this monstrosity to their foreheads but their now using tattoo artists as well. These women need the father, the son and the Holy Spirit to create Optimus Prime and transform their face back into something that makes sense to society, these women need kicks with hands and punches with feet, head butts from knees and body slams from 54 buses. These clueless clowns walking around looking like their advertising Nike! The actual joke is there are different styles to this nonsense too; you have the classic, “I am unaware of the fact that my eyebrows are supposed to be equal in width and length” look. Then you have the, “My eyebrows just so happen to run down the sides of my face to my cheek bones” look, you also have the popular, “I have currently transported my eyebrows up into my hairline” look and last but certainly not least you have the, “I’m showing the world that I am a fan of a good big mac meal”. And don’t get me started about the men that condone this nonsense from their partners! YOU allow your wives, girlfriends, birds, bats, and bees, whatever you call them these days, to walk along side you looking like they offered to be your children’s drawing paper. Stop embarrassing each other’s lives with this stupidity, make yourself useful you should be doing azonto to her nose, dougie to her mouth and gully creepering her with a left hook, give her a blast from the damn past for her insulting ways. And just a friendly tip, your child’s teacher’s whiteboard markers are not to be mistaken for makeup tools either! Eyeliner is not a mechanism used to make you look like your still a victim of slavery. It’s not only black females its white women, black men and white men too, what’s this about guyliner... I rest my case!

CELEBRITY GOSSIP Madonna Named Highest-Paid Celebrity By Forbes Queen of Pop Madonna has raked in an estimated $125m in the last year. She has received the title of highest-paid celebrity after earning an estimated $125 million (£80.7m) between June 2012 and 2013. Research by Forbes shows the Queen of Pop beat director Steven Spielberg ($100m/£64.5m) to the top spot helped, mainly by a world tour promoting her MDNA album. Along with her jaunt, earnings came from merchandise sales including her Material Girl clothing line and perfume. Elsewhere on the list, X Factor creator Simon Cowell came joint third with Fifty Shades Of Grey author EL James both earning $95m in the last year (£61.3m). Lady Gaga came in at No.10 with an estimated $80m (£51.6m) despite her Born This Way tour ending early due to an injured hip, while Katy Perry pocketing $39m in the past year.

Rizzle Kicks: Louis Walsh Is A Puppet Rizzle Kicks have lashed out at The X Factor judge Louis Walsh, describing him as a “puppet”. The youthful hip-hop duo took their pot shot at the veteran boy band manager and reality TV judge in an interview with Bang Showbiz. Jordan Stephens said, “I don’t think I could stand to see Louis Walsh on that programme ever again. The guy is a puppet. He prayed to Jedward.” And band mate Harley Alexande-Sule added, “Jedward are so annoying - I walked out before I had to meet them. I don’t think they’re horrible guys, they are nice, but I just don’t like the situation they’ve been put in.”

Ashley Walters : Angry Television Viewers? ANGRY TELEVISION viewers have taken to social media sites to complain about the new series of Channel 4’s Top Boy, starring Ashley Walters. The widely-anticipated drama, which relied heavily on social media to promote the first season, returned to TV screens on August 20, but left some viewers unimpressed by its “one dimensional” representation of ethnic minorities. Ashley Walters says ‘It’s a drama and its entertainment”, and we agree. Bigg up Bashy, Ashley Walters and Kano!

Miley Cyrus : Television Councils up Raw Miley burst into the big time in 2006 on Hannah Montana , a TV show about a girl who lives a double life as an average teenage school girl named Miley Stewart by day and a famous pop singer named Hannah Montana by night. After a couple of series and a feature length film, Miley took Hannah Montana on tour and started to lose her American girl-next-door image. Before Sunday’s performance Miley had already been posing provocatively but it was the explicit nature of her moves which thrust the six minute performance into the limelight. It was even described as sexual exploitation by a leading parents group. The Parents Television Council has called for “heads to roll” at MTV after Miley’s raunchy performance with Robin Thicke aired on the family orientated show.
