Benjamin AD is back with a bang Describe your swag with 1 word? ZOOOOGA! Football or Games Console? Games Console. What would you buy if you had £5? (Any items up to the value)? Chicken Burger, Chips and Orange Mirinda. Beyoncé, Rihanna or your iPhone? Beyoncé. Twitter, Facebook or Instagram? Facebook.

“ I’m getting older; I’m metamorphosing and want my people to grow with me as I do..”

L

ondon’s finest Benjamin AD is back with a bang, unveiling a new video and news of an EP. The rapper has announced that his forthcoming Acknowledgements EP was released on the 15th December and offers a taste of what’s to come with the video for his new song Captain’s Log. The track features the vocal talents of J. Warner and regular collaborator C-Major on production. A lot of people wonder what it’s like to be a rapper, give us a short break down of a week with Benjamin AD. I guess it varies on what type of rapper you are! My life isn’t one big celebration like a lot of people make theirs out to be. There’s only so many times you can be on Twitter and tell the world you’re recording, or writing, etc., but I love it, so it works for me. The crazy thing about the occupation is the lack of routine! That always kills me. Lack of routine = a lot of work and lack of sleep. The previous equation = a confused Benjamin AD every day. Your EP is out and doing well, for those who haven’t listened to it yet, what’s it called and what can they expect from it? The EP is called Acknowledgements. It continues the theme from Chapter 0.5 (my first mixtape) with that being the prologue, this is the acknowledgements stage of a book before the real BENJAMIN AD| 8

substance of chapter 1. People can expect the same essence that has made people support me in the first place, but fused with many new elements as my sound grows. People want you to do the same thing all the time but that doesn’t mean growth. I’m getting older; I’m metamorphosing and want my people to grow with me as I do. How would you describe the music scene at the minute? Interesting, to be generous. There’s a great amount of opportunity, but by the same token there is still the problem of cliques within influential circles that ultimately control most of a genre right now. That’s no quick fix, but strictly musically speaking, it’s definitely interesting. I’m still sitting over here wishing for more creativity though because I get bored Who would you find interesting to work with and why? There are more than a few people,

just probably nobody you’d immediately have in mind for collaborations. Without saying too much, you shouldn’t just think rappers should work with another rapper. F*ck it. It’d be good to work with my brother again (Young Adz) as we haven’t worked together in a while. At one point you was signed to Universal Records what happened with that? In a nutshell, I’m being very mindful of what I’m saying here... it stopped making sense. I thank god it wasn’t a situation I see with other upcoming artists where they release a lead single, it doesn’t do well and then the label drops them. Forgive me for being coy; I just feel that the past should stay there. It’s a newer me, with a better sound, a better quality of music and more momentum. That’s what’s important man. @BeanjaminAD

THE RISE OF JAMES ARTHUR F

ollowing his victory, Arthur’s winner’s song, a cover of Shontelle’s 2010 song “Impossible”, was released as a charity single for Together for Short Lives. It became the fastest-selling The X Factor winner’s single so far, reaching 255,000 downloads within 48 hours and over 490,000 by the end of the week. The single topped the UK Singles Chart in its first week of release. After 11 days, it was the seventh biggest-selling debut single from any contestant from The X Factor, with sales of 622,000. In its second week the single dropped to number two, but reclaimed the number one spot in its third week, and stayed at the top for a further week. After three weeks, it was the fifth best-selling single of 2012 with 897,000 copies sold. After four weeks it had sold 971,000 copies. As of 11 January 2013, the single has sold more than 1 million copies. The song also peaked at number one in Ireland, two in Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland, and eight in Slovakia. As of August 2013, the single has sold 1.2 million copies, 30,000 fewer than Alexandra Burke’s version of “Hallelujah”. On 7 August 2013, Arthur announced via Twitter that his next single would be called “You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You”, which was released to UK radio stations on 9 September 2013. The song was officially released worldwide on 20 October 2013 and debuted at number two in the UK, falling just behind Lorde’s “Royals”. Arthur’s self-titled debut studio album, James Arthur, was released on 4 November 2013. The album charted

in at number two behind Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2. “Recovery” was released as the album’s third single on 15 December and debuted at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. In November 2013 Arthur generated much controversy over the use of homophobic lyrics in a song. Directed at rapper Micky Worthless, the lyrics included several slurs including the term “you fucking queer”. This sparked outrage among the LGBT community and led to spats between him and comedians Frankie Boyle and Matt Lucas and singer Lucy Spraggan on Twitter. Arthur immediately apologised for his comments and affirmed that he was not homophobic. Following this he announced that he would not be posting on Twitter anymore, with his

management taking up control of his page. The backlash continued however with a Facebook campaign to see his upcoming appearance on The X Factor be cancelled. iTunes has offered refunds for his album due to complaints from customers. After switching on the Christmas lights on 8 November in Manchester, Manchester City Council have said that if the controversy had happened earlier he would have been replaced. On 22 November, Arthur’s management announced that the singer would be cancelling all public engagements for the next seven days due to exhaustion. Singer Olly Murs came to Arthur’s defence but a few days later said that he was not defending the choice of lyrics. @JamesArthur23

ADVICE

5 STEPS TOWARDS SUCCESS By Sarah Selah

I

f you want to run your own business, you’ve come to the right page. Being an entrepreneur is a high-risk, high-reward position. It’s full of stressful situations - sure, but it’s also chock full of rewards and a sense of accomplishment. It’s not as hard as it seems, as long as you have some diligence, patience and, of course, a good idea; you’ll be your own boss sooner than you think!

1 Think of a great idea Most businesses start with one compelling idea — whether it’s a service people need, a product that would make life easier or something that combines both. Remember that ideas don’t matter it’s what you do with them that counts! • If a great idea comes to you, evaluate if it is realistic. Think of cost, manufacturing time and popularity. • Always be open to different ideas. Ask and record if people would actually buy the product. • If you don’t have an idea yet it is a good start to think of your target market first. Then brainstorm a list of things like places they shop and things they might really like. Narrow the list down to about three items keeping cost, manufacturing time, and popularity in mind. Find the easiest, most realistic product you can offer.

2 Write a business plan Include details and descriptions and plan everything out realistically. Take your time and evaluate your product at each section

3 Network Hang out with entrepreneurs. By meeting entrepreneurs socially, you gain contacts and hear about opportunities. More importantly, you learn how entrepreneurs think. You pick up their attitudes, their nose for opportunity, and their willingness to explore every idea and its opposite (they know that often both work), the great diversity in their styles.

4 Sell Sell and distribute your product. If you’re getting revenue, then you’re in business. You’re testing your theories about the market, you’re finding out what really works and what doesn’t, and you’re getting fuel for more ideas and improvements. If you’re not getting revenue, then it’s all in your head.

5 SELL SOME MORE AND KEEP REPEATING THE CYCLE! Tips Make sure your business plan or objects are perfect before moving on this will make your business run a lot more smoothly. No one plans to fail, but you must always have a plan that could be put in action in the event of failure. Planning for a failure is always better than failing to plan.

SQUIDLONDON THE ENTREPRENEUR’S STORY

S

quidLondon produces a unique range of products that change colour when wet!

Creating, “wearable pieces of art” - Time Out New York. Their trade signature is white on black and as the product gets wet the white design erupts into a visual effect of bright strong colour delivering the real ‘WOW’ factor. Emma-Jayne Parkes and Viviane Jaeger co-founded SquidLondon in June 2008 at the age of 23 and 24 during their final year at the renowned London College of Fashion. They had gained experience in fashion houses such as Chloé, Mulberry and Selina Blow whilst completing their degree in Product Design and Development. How did SquidLondon come about? Squidlondon was born at The London College of Fashion and came to full fruition at graduation in 2008. Our original inspiration included Jackson Pollock – we love how he produced colourful creations onto massive white canvases through the movement of his body. The umbrella represents a blank canvas upon which our design burst into colour with the rain. What are the positive and negative points of being an entrepreneur? Positive: You are your own boss, you get to implement your idea right through from design to manufacture to retail. Every day is different. You get to meet some incredible people – some whom become great friends. You are constantly learning from people around you and your own mistakes. squidlondon | 24

The not so positive: Sometimes it is tough and there is no one else to take the weight off your shoulders. You have a huge responsibility to your suppliers, customers, investors and yourself. What risks did you have to take while developing your business? I guess you take risks everyday. Risk of failure was a big one in the beginning but no longer as I don’t believe failure is what I once saw it to be. So in hindsight the risks we took (i.e spending all our time on building Squid instead of focusing our energy on building our career in a traditional way) are what have made us learn more, be stronger and in a better position to not make such mistakes again. What are your goals and what can we expect from you in the future? We have many goals – growth is the core

goal that drives them all. The future = super exciting! We are launching a children’s wear brand; SquidKids – colour changing rainwear for 2-6 year old. We have created the autumn/winter 2014 collection, developed the website, lookbooks and promo film and currently in chats with some big retailers. We have been having a debate in the office and we need your input, is success skill or luck and have you been lucky as to why you have both achieved what you have to date? Luck is an interesting concept; it defies all reason and logic! But one could argue we have had a few ‘lucky’ coincidences. Success is down to a few factors as mentioned above. Skill certainly plays a bigger role than luck, so my answer would be skill. @SquidLondon

sories. All of Elevates Clothing designs are inspired by Spiritual Symbols, Philosophy & Positive/Motivational Statements, which makes for very interesting, bold uplifting design concepts.

The brand 1st surfaced in 2010 as a design under So Real Clothing but after receiving a huge amount of interest, the design took flight, elevating into an identity of its own. Creator of the brand Motep Soulstar said “We like people and people like our brand. Unlike many other clothing brands we’re not in it for the money, we just want to spread positive energy. We feel it’s time for a change in the minds and hearts of the people”. When asked what his motives were for creating this positive brand, he replied “Everyone is so focused on stress, problems and general negative things in their lives. I want everyone to just let go and focus on the beauty in life you know “don’t stress, just progress”. The message is simple; your mind shapes your world, Rise Above Negativity, Elevate With Wings”. The UK Brand has done just that, spreading their ethos at showcases around

London from Mayfair clubs such as Aura to Urban events such as Hip Hop Nation. How it Began With Writer/Poet/Photographer/Designer/ Philosopher Motep Soulstar as creator of the brand, it was only natural Elevates journey would begin as a question “where are all the fashion/lifestyle brands with substance/depth?” Shortly after an exploration into this thought, Elevate With Wings manifested and began to grow in 2009-2010, later levitating into the fashion industry in 2011 showcasing Off Shoulder Tops, Vests & T-shirts at The Industry Take Over in Shoreditch, with the “Wings of Elevation” Collection. Don’t waste time focussing on failure and obstacles, excel in what you choose refuse to lose. In 2012 the brand became well known for one of their clothing designs titles “it’s Time to Elevate”. people just loved the energy behind that

statement. Elevate continues to grow and find more avenues to motivate people, releasing Books, Blogs, Mail Lists & more all focused on Words of Motivation. 2014 Plans Whether it’s a photo shoot, video shoot or customer service, Elevate likes to keep it positive. After a successful 10 months of building brand presence, designs and fans Elevate now plans to expand, with talk of jewellery & watches on the way plus a Premium range. The brand prides itself on selling a variety of quality products without the outrageous prices such as Beanies, Jumpers, Quilted Jackets, Tote Bags & more ranging from £3.99 to £54.99. After a year of back-breaking labour to get the cogs turning, Paper Boy Clothing has decided to re-launch. But this isn’t any normal re-launch. Paper Boy started as a men’s e-commerce store for crazy clothing that battled the norm. The team plan to continue their mad designs but change something more foundational in the company. They explained that challenging the norm for t-shirt graphics was just not enough. They had a yearning for something more. To bring a fresh service that would attract attention and most importantly satisfy their customers. Nathan mentioned “We brought nothing new to the market apart from some challenging graphics on t-shirts”.

THE REST OF RAZOR N

orth west London artist Razor has spent the last few years networking tirelessly, and raising his profile with a series of nationally recognised mixtapes, magazine features and award nominations. Since 2010 Razor has released four mixtapes which includes ‘Reinventing’ (2011) that got nominated at the OMA awards for ‘Best Newcomer’. He had a number of video’s featured on Link Up TV, Rap City, Spiff TV, GRM daily. Klear TV and Channel AKA. He has also had his songs rotated and been interviewed by Dj Quincy on Choice FM (Capital Xtra), recently he was invited out to Ayia Napa to perform. In 2014 Razor plans to release his 5th mixtape called ‘The Rest Of Razor’, and has tracks with Gappy Ranks and Jay Soul coming out. How did you feel when you got paid for your first gig? When I got paid for my first gig it felt good because I had been doing a lot of open mics and free shows, so I felt like it was well deserved. What was your most embarrassing moment when performing? It was actually one of my first shows; I was a bit nervous and had a drink to settle my nerves. I was performing with 3 other people, I only had one verse to perform and I forgot the last 8 bars of it. I promised to never do that again. What does music mean to you? Music means a lot to me, when I first got into it I felt like it was just a hobby but the more I got involved in the industry doing shows, interviews, videos etc., the more inspired I got. I’m way too involved now because it’s all I think about and do. What’s your likes and dislikes about the music industry? I like the industry because I feel like as an independent artist I can write about what I want and a lot of people relate to me. Knowing I can influence people makes me feel like I’m doing something right. What I dislike about the industry is that a lot of people and music organisations can be extremely disloyal. razor | 16

What would you call your musical sound? I would say its UK hip hop. People that know my music say I’m a conscious rapper, I wouldn’t say that. I think I just know how to make real life experiences rhyme very well. Most of my music is based on my everyday life; I just try and put a different twist on it. Where did your journey start? In 2009 I had plans of taking music seriously, on New Year’s Eve that year I met Wretch 32 and that put the nail in the coffin on my decision to take music more seriously. At the start of 2010, that’s when I started doing open mics and performing. @Razorartist

ALL ROUNDER - DUANE JONES uane Jones is a DJ, designer, TV and radio presenter with ties in the sport, music He’s a BRIT School graduate whose first real job was on national radio. He boasts an impressive back catalogue, including credentials with Radio 1, 1Xtra, 5 Live, MTV and the list goes on.

Da and fashion industries.

Did you always want to work on radio and how did you get into this? Radio was something I always enjoyed listening to but never planned on being a part of until I went to the Brits School of Performing Arts to pursue media. From the day I first sat in their radio suite I fell in love and knew it’s what I wanted to do for the next few years, launch myself into the media/music industry. So I spent a lot of time on Brit FM and pirate radio stations until I landed a show on BBC Radio. What artists are you listening to at the moment? As the Renowned Group artist roster is quite big, I spend most my days listening to our artist’s and producers new music. Wretch and Jacob banks are working on their new albums and producers Wizzy Wow and KZ are working on some really special albums cut for top vocalists, both here in the UK and US. Apart from Renowned projects, recently I found myself listening to a lot of Reggae/Dancehall studying and enjoying Super Cat, Ninja Man, Shabba Ranks, Sizzla, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Buju Banton etc. Plus a lot of free format music, instrumentals from all different genres. You are also proving yourself to be a natural businessman and entrepreneur as you have co founded a company called Renowned, tell us about this and how did it come about? I’ve always been driven and keen to be as creative as I can possibly be, literally waking up to new ideas every day. With all the experience I had gained from TV/Radio/Music/DJing and Fashion, it krept & konan | 16

was time to build something special. I’d always had a friendship and great working relationship with Wretch 32 and Zeon Richards from day one and we shared the same creative visions from a young age. So in late 2012 early 2013 it was time to launch the ‘Renowned Group’ which has allowed us to express ourselves creatively on multiple platforms such as music, art, film, management and publishing, giving the precocious talent around us a home and vehicle to deliver their vision also. You have delivered valuable time and platforms to the UK music scene, how would you describe the scene at the moment? The music scene is in a strong position. Our production and fashion values are world class. The rest of the world is looking at us right now. If you put together a good team consisting of originality and knowledge sky’s the limit. Have you had any embarrassing moments while doing an interview? Not really, but people often remind me about my Alicia Keys interview because I was completely thrown off by her. Pre interview she stroked my face and asked if I had a girlfriend, she wasn’t making a move, it was just a compliment. By the time I started the interview my head was gone and at one point during the interview I asked her the exact same question twice in a row because I was struggling to focus, she stopped me and asked if I was ok, lol.

What have you got coming? As far as presenting goes, I have already recorded a few MTV shows that go out from February this year. Plus following on from my recent BBC 5 Live and Football Focus appearances, I have another sports project on the way. Our company Renowned Films have had quite a few show formats commissioned this year, one to look out for is ‘F2’s Kicks Off’ which will be launching on ‘London Live’ as one of their flagship shows in March. I’ve also just became the EuropeanCommercial Director for Starter and Mitchell & Ness so look out for my headwear and apparel projects with Wretch 32, Disturbing London, Rio Ferdinand and Island Records. @Duane_Jones

ortuguese born Rapper and Music Producer Elson Barbosa found his passion for music during his teenage years. Drama and struggle were surrounding his life from early years when his father and mother separated. Elson’s mother raised him by herself, Elson always turned to music to escape from negativity. At this point, Elson idolizes artists such as: Michael Jackson, Usher, Timbaland, 50 Cent, Dr Dre and Boyz ll Men. In 2003 Elson gained an interest in music that leads him to start experimenting with rhyme and flow, so he began writing lyrics to rap music. During school years Elson spent a lot of time in the music department with friends; they would play drums, piano, rap and sing. “Whilst growing up I felt that there was a gap in the UK Music Industry for me, I felt like my creativity needed to be heard, I was developing my sound, based on the influences I had...” In 2011 Elson took his music to a new level, as he matured his skills and experience allowed him to take new steps within a music and media career, he started building bridges within the industry and make connections with people who gave him guidance. At this point, Elson found a new partner who became very encouraged to empower his music career. Elson’s creativity brings a unique sound to the Music Industry.

The music industry is changing fast and Elson is taking an innovative approach to his music production, Elson will continue to break new ground as he continues to create new music. Music that is fresh and unique. Song writing is Elson’s primary creative outlet and live performance is one of his sources of inspiration; even when he’s not performing himself, he attends live shows because it sparks his own inner muse. His lyrics tend to be reflective, energetic and vibrant. A live show with Elson Barbosa will definitely get the crowd going! Much like Elson himself, there is a deeper energy under the surface as well as the typical fiery hype that so often comes from young talent trying to make a name for themselves. Elson Barbosa is one to watch, a slow burn; a growing fire that

you know is going to be burning for some time to come. The music doesn’t only make you want to fist-pump, but the songs will stay in your head for days and they will keep you coming back.

QUICK FIRE 5

Elson uses his charisma in his everyday life, his determination and focus is what makes him stand out from others. Elson sees himself as a product, so in all aspects he endeavours to reach his full potential, by constantly studying, researching and training to be the best he can. @mrelsonbarbosa
