interview

Asia lo

ekenah ‘Asia Love’ Eccles, singer aged 24, originally from Cambodia, South East Asia, however born in Newcastle and raised in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Asia has been no stranger to the stage where she made her first appearance as a solo artist in 2012, with her bright, bubbly and creative persona that shows in the way she walks, talks and dresses she is more than set for a bright future.

L

When did you first realise you wanted to make a career out of music? I really realised when I was 20 that I couldn’t see myself doing anything singing! I always dreamt of performing and people singing my songs, holding banners up singing along and genuinely enjoying themselves with a bit of me strutting my stuff like i’m Christina Aguilera

You have performed at a number of events what’s been your best and worst experience? Best - I would say the more underground vibes just chilled and people are there for the music, I have done a few at Kings Cross, Surya and my favourite one was Urban Underground. My worst has definitely levelle / saykridd daly | 8 angel | london 16 got to be the time I performed in a night club in Westend, I suppose it wasn’t about the music it was added in asia love | 8

there for complimentary as it was more a comedy event held in a club anyway time was running out they were running late and I was head lining but half way through my set they cut my mic it was horrible, I handled it professionally but was so angry and upset but that’s all part and parcel of it all i guess, you have to have good and bad experience to learn and grow from.

What events would you like to perform at and why?? Wireless would be insane, I vibe off of a crowd like that!!! Break down a typical day in the life of Asia Love Wake up singing the last song that I either listened to the night before or is currently my fave!! Wash my damn skin and think about what lipstick i’m gonna wear today haha. I’m constantly planning and doing something to help me reach my dreams in becoming a successful artist.

Whats your likes and dislikes about the industry? I never use to look into it, I was always away with the fairies as you would say and just think it was all about singing but I’ve learnt that it’s a lot more to being able to sing, nowadays they want the full package. there’s so many image expectations, money and business involved and to be honest its quite scary what the industry can do and have done to many great artists is shocking but I know as long as I have and continue to find great people who have me in their best interest along the way i’ll hopefully have longevity and an amazing career ahead of me.

Describe your musical sound? Ooooh tough one!! I would say it’s beginning to really sound like just me!! I like to think vocally I put my own into any style and make that style my own the Asia love sound haha.. Erm no but from the production side of things I would say it’s very RnB/ Pop at the same time very infectious lol I just can’t wait for you all to hear my music!! In the past I have been told I sound like Aaliyah with a splash of Lisa Lopez (Left eye).. Which is a damn honour but now not so much but hey it’s still early stages and I feel like I’m still finding myself Who is your inspiration? Chris brown all the way he’s amazing! Musically, artistically style wise, argh that boy introduced me to RnB, Soul and HipHop before him I listened to a lot of 80’s and pop music, artist such Rick Astley played a part in my household I didn’t do my research to all other types of music until I heard his album.. Tell a lie Brandy was my girl !! Growing up I would know songs by sound but not the artist behind it and who they were and how they became, I just appreciate great music and every aspect of their artistry .. Late bloomer I know .. thank god for music !! @ASIALOVEMUSIQ

LONDON, UK - What do you get when you mix bold streetwear with imaginative comics and original characters? We’ll give you a moment... Got it yet? It’s mayamada, a story-based clothing brand influenced by Japanese anime and manga. There’s something very unique about this brand. For one, it exists within a fantasy TV network. From the characters, to the inverted kanji logo resembling an old-school television set, the influence is everywhere. That universe is the foundation for the clothing, comic and characters that make up mayamada. And it’s the original characters that really make them stand out. They aren’t just represented by two dimensional designs, but as fully formed characters with stories like those from a Saturday morning cartoon. The best way to think about mayamada is Looney Tunes meets Japanese TV meets British streetwear. With its anime and manga influences, mayamada exists not only to put a fresh spin on streetwear, but to inspire creativity and imagination

The brand was founded by Lao K and Nigel, two graduates from Brunel University and the furthest you’d think of when picturing the brains behind this uniquely creative fashion company. Both have a passion for creating stories and grew up with the rise of anime shows on TV in the UK with shows like Guyver, Samurai Pizza Cats and DragonBall Z.

Stay tuned to find out what’s next for mayamada and their mix of fashion meets comics. There’s a lot more to come and you’re going to enjoy being part of the journey.

interview

GORILLA CAMP - JAREK arek Drzewiecki is a dedicated Polish power lifter and personal trainer who often competes in and wins in the Strong Man competitions nationwide and around Europe.

J

When did you first realise you can make a career out of Body building? Well, i realised that once I finished basic school as I never liked to do what doesn’t give me pleasure. I’ve decided to surround my business and life around sport! Roughly 10 years ago, but I’ve been involved into sport my whole life! What events will you be performing at? The upcoming events are definitely advanced strongest man U80kg 1st OF March in Northampton , 17-18tm April polish IBFF championship men’s physique, 25th April UKBFF Portsmouth men’s physique and maybe one of competitions in May at BodyPowerexpo (to confirm). I will see what’s next after the recovery of my body! What is your training regime? My training regime depends on the goals set ie strongman, physique or just photo shoots! Basically my training programme fits with nutrition 1000%, as for example strongman training is specific with performance, movements etc so nutrition varies (more calories needed) when it comes to physique competitions there is more resistance training, and body needs to look lean at the end of the day! There is no short description of training regime! All is specific!!! What’s the hardest part of your training? The hardest part is defo recovery as there is always temptation for hard training during this time! At the end of the day you have to switch of temptation and read what your body needs! Stretching, massage, sleep etc, thats the hardest for sure! angel | camp 16 gorilla | 16

How did you get involved with Gorilla Camp? GC crew found me online via common friends Yayhe! My friend showed the GC crew some om my videos and pictures and from there they was interested in me joining the team! The got in touch and I obviously agreed as it’s an awesome opportunity with such a team! What vision do you see for Gorilla camps future?

Instagram: jdr88pt

GC is definitely expanding and it’s all going towards great directions with lots of potential! There are a lot of great things in store such as cartoons for kids, GC sports Centres, leading sportswear brand and which is an amazing way to encourage everyone to be fit, strong and look amazing! What is a typical training session for you? There is no typical training session but let’s break down squats! Including strength and hypertrophy! First part is mobility so making the joints moving and warm up the body :-) Second part is going to be movement specific progressive warm up so basically barbell back squats adding extra weight up to target weight for 3-5 restrictions! Once weight has been found, third part is to stay on it for 4-5 sets with pretty long rest periods (3-5min between sets) That’s the main part for strength Fourth part is hypertrophy (high reps) and

here depends on the programme, you could do walking lunges, front squats etc. It all will be on high reps. Fifth part is stretching! All for health and recovery! It’s a cool down by the way! Never skip it! It’s a very important part of a training session! Where do you get your inspiration from? Inspiration? 100% people who progress! We learn all and I’m inspired by every ordinary or extraordinary person who can move forwards! I’m bored of people who stay at the same place forever but the one who can move forwards even by little steps cheers me up and gives me power! Not only sports wise but the everyday living. @GORILLACAMP1 INSTAGRAM: GORILLA_CAMP HTTP://WWW.GORILLACAMP.CO.UK/

interview

GORILLA CAMP - ROMA oma Oliver is a Florida based bodybuilder who is building and sculpting himself for Mr Olympia 2020, he has accomplished a lot so far and still has a lot to offer.

R

When did you first realise you can make a career out of Body building? I’ve always loved bodybuilding and knew I wanted to compete but like other kids I had dreams of being a lawyer or a doctor. It wasn’t until my 20’s that I realized I could make a career out of bodybuilding and devote all of my time to the sport.

How did you get involved with Gorilla Camp? The link between Gorilla Camp and I came through Instagram, which has given me an excellent social media outlet for sharing my progress. What vision do you see for Gorilla camps future? What Gorilla Camp has in store for the

future is nothing short of exciting. The clothing and designs feel as clean and fresh as the attitude that comes with wearing it. The workout regimes and actual camps themselves are going to prove to be a training ground for all those who want to succeed in their fitness goals. @GORILLACAMP1 INSTAGRAM: GORILLA_CAMP HTTP://WWW.GORILLACAMP.CO.UK/

What events will you be performing at? Next year I plan to compete at the Europa, a large event here in the US that draws great crowds. I’ll compete in a few shows prior to the Europa, which will be chosen at a closer date. What is your training regime? I prefer to train primarily one bodypart per day and I usually workout with a 2 days on 1 day off split if my schedule allows. This routine has given me the best results out of everything I have tried, I did not use rest enough and was not making progress. What’s the hardest part of your training? Training isn’t hard, in fact it’s what I look forward to every day more than anything else. The strict diet and maintaining a real life around training is the hard part. Being the guy who has to eat every few hours makes friendships and work difficult.

interview

GORILLA CAM - JORDAN ordan trains in the field of Calisthenics. This form of exercise consists of a variety of exercises, often rhythmical movements, generally without using equipment or apparatus. They are intended to increase body strength, body fitness and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one’s body weight for resistance.

J

When did you first realise you can make a career out of calisthenics? When I started training I didn’t think anything of it, I just thought it was a new training style for me and I liked it. Then I started to realise that a lot of people were impressed in the things I could do and barely anyone could lift their bodyweight so I realised I could capitalise on this niche market.

What is your training structure? I try to go gym every day, sometimes even twice a day. Most of the time though it ends up being 4 days a week because there’s always one day when my whole body is in pain. What’s the hardest part of your training? For me the hardest part of training would definitely have to be either abs, legs or shoulders. Not necessarily because it’s hard but I just don’t like training those areas but I have to do it! gorilla camp | 18

We see you rocking some Gorilla camp merchandise, tell us about this? I’m actually due to get some more gear soon and hopefully some personalised stuff! I get a lot of questions about the brand when I’m training so it seems like it’s very likeable.

What is the gorilla camp movement all about? You’re right to call it a movement, because this isn’t just another gym clothing line, this is a lifestyle brand! Gorilla camp is about more than just training and getting big, to me it’s about empowering others to be the best that they can, not only in the gym but in every aspect of their lives, all walks and all ages. It’s about training your mind as well as your body, a strong body with a weak mind is like a bed with no mattress. @GORILLACAMP1 INSTAGRAM: GORILLA_CAMP HTTP://WWW.GORILLACAMP.CO.UK/

When did you first realise you wanted to make a career out of MMA fighting? I knew the sport was growing at the time I started training (MMA). With a natural power explosive frame I found that this sport really suited me and I really excelled with learning. 10 years later I’m 8-2-0 and I have a really good team (London Shoot fighters). What events will you be performing at? At this moment in time I’ve signed a contract with Indian promotion (Super fight league ) until I hear more I am very active on the Top UK promotions so Twitter/ instagram me @JRadcliffeMMA @ gorilla_camp keep posted on the journey. What’s the hardest part of your training? Every day is hard I push my body and mind to the limit, but when I have a fight planned oh all hell breaks loose and it’s Go Time, my coaches make sure every area is drilled!! it’s crazy I Love it . What vision do you see for Gorilla camps future? We are just gonna keep it simple and work hard on the brand, keep bringing out new products and stay consistent. Instagram: jradcliffemma

WHAT IS BINGHI’S? ounded in 2008 By Princess Nyah, Binghi’s had its first breakthrough from pre selling out of a limited edition ladies T-Shirt via MySpace. The bossy and feisty slogan, ‘The Billionaire Girls Club’, caught the eye of 100 females with its statement of female empowerment, who flocked to their PayPal accounts to make an order that would be a staple part of history.

F

The Unique fashion brand quickly picked up through the summer of 2009, where every DJ in the urban scene was draped in a Binghi’s brand T-Shirt. Event’s such as ‘Sex, Drugs and Funky house’ was a complete sell out, as well as ‘Big Boy’s do big things’. A touch of Princess Nyah’s Bossy flare and British twist made her new men’s range a cut above the rest. While their influences were pulled from street culture and everyday phrases, The London born brand was mainly influenced by what was happening in their hometown. Daniella Dawkins, “Head designer” at Binghi’s, explains that most of the designs are a mixture of Princess Nyah’s style and love for Nike Jordan’s.

Clothes For Positive People’ Princess Nyah explained “Its not about how many people are wearing the clothes it’s about evoking an emotion so that our customers come back” which they most definitely do. The arrival of Binghi’s onto the ASOS Market Place platform in 2013 increased traffic to the site in tenfold. Binghi’s throughout the summer season have a pink stall at Portobello Market where you can find the one of gems created in the Bond Street work shop.

In 2011, Binghi’s teamed up with International Recording artist J-Cole and managed the distribution of his dreamville clothing line, giving it that Binghis UK influence. He became a huge fan of the brand and continues to wear Binghi’s Boutique products.

ADVICE

How to Be Self Motivated And The Psychology Being self-motivated means being ready for driven, focused discussion and behaviour. It also means being sharp and smart enough not to be manipulated and to be open to positive learning. Being in this state of mind is the challenge! Luckily, you have every tool at your disposal to get started right now.

1 It’s pretty hard to get anything done when we’re stuck on thoughts like, “Ugh, life sucks and it’s raining.” Thoughts like those make us want to just curl up in our beds until someone physically drags us out. You can’t do that! Positive thoughts are the only way you’ll even find motivation in the first place. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, just stop. Don’t finish it. Divert your attention elsewhere. Especially if you’re thinking about your motivation! This task in front of you? It’s doable and you have the abilities to do it. Any other thinking will keep you from even trying.

2 Get confident. With thinking positive about your world, you have to think positive about you. If you think you’re incapable, it’ll seriously put a damper on the amount of effort you give this task. Why would you bother doing something you don’t think you can do? Exactly. You won’t. To get started, count your successes. What do you have going for you? What have you done in the past that was awesome? What resources do you have at your disposal? Think of all the things you’ve achieved in the past. For what reason would you not be able to achieve what you want now?! You’ve done similar things before.

3

Get hungry. When Les Brown talks about motivation, he repeats, “You got to be hungry!” What he’s saying here is that you have to actually want it. You can’t imagine a life without it. If you don’t really, want it, what are you doing trying to motivate yourself? Sometimes it involves a little twisting to convince yourself that you want it. It’s a lot easier to do something you don’t want to do when you have a purpose in mind -- a purpose that you’re hungry for. Know setbacks will happen. It’s important to go into a behavior knowing there will be failures along the way. Being a perfectionist about yourself will just leave you frustrated and tempted to give up. There will be times when you fail. You just have to know that you’re capable of getting back up. Your failures or setbacks have nothing to do with you and everything to do with being human. They happen. Sometimes they’ll happen because of you, but sometimes they’ll happen because of circumstances that are beyond your control. Going into this with a level head will benefit you greatly in the end.

THE INSIGHT MIXTAPE REVIEW JP Cooper - When The Darkness Comes EP Manchester soul singer/songwriter delivers an incredible 5 track EP. Hailed as “ future sound of 2015” and having recently signed a deal with Island records this EP is a perfect start to 2015. Although only 5 tracks long, this EP takes you on an emotional journey and the inclusion of Closer as both an original track and an acoustic is a fantastic touch, both versions even though same songs deliver completely different feelings Rating: 5/5

Dizzee Rascal - Pagans EP Dizzee Rascal released what I would like to call a passion project, the hardcore Dizzee fans get the treat they have been waiting for. Although it’s only 4 tracks long and some may say it’s more like a single than an EP this shows the old school Dizzee fans that he is back with a vengeance Rating: 4/5

Charlie Sloth - Hood Heat Vol1 2 discs full of some of the hottest hip hop tracks around, this could be seen as a typical compilation however the inclusion of exclusive tracks “Look Like” and “keep on” which feature Jadakiss, Stormzy & JMC which are produced by Charlie himself allow this compilation to introduce the world to not only Charlie the DJ but Charlie the producer too Rating:4/5

Amique - The Ecstasy EP 4 track EP from Liverpool based Soul singer which will leave you almost in a trance, a wonderful blend of jazz & soul complimented with incredible songwriting and a voice which you could compare to that of Prince

Rating: 5/5

CELEBRITY GOSSIP Steve Carell Oscars 2015 nomination gets slammed by Noel Clarke While there are clearly those who really enjoyed the movie Foxcatcher and feel that the performance of Steve Carell was more than Oscar worthy, one man in particular has spoken out against it. British star Noel Clarke, who has done everything from writing, directing and starring in movie projects, has hit out at Steve Carell’s Oscar nomination, stating that it should never have happened. Noel Clarke has said that he does not feel that the movie Foxcatcher was that good and feels that Steve Carell being nominated for the Best Actor in a Leading Role award is a travesty.

Sam Smith is “trying not to go mental” The 22-year-old singer has confessed he has worked equally hard trying to keep himself grounded as he has promoting his music since releasing his debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ last year. The four time Grammy Award-winner said: “I’ve spent as much energy this past year trying not to go mental as I have plugging my record. You have to. It’s like your body’s trying to float away from you. And you’re hanging on for dear life.” Fortunately, the ‘Stay With Me’ hitmaker is currently taking some time off to relax following the release of his first record, and feels no pressure to produce a follow-up album any time soon due to his debut offering’s immense success.

Drake has “borrowed” a line from Skepta on Lil’ Waynes new mixtape Drake has seemingly borrowed a line from Grime MC Skepta on a new track for Lil Wayne’s latest mixtape. The Canadian rapper has professed his love for the British genre in the past, but has taken his adoration to the next level on ‘Used To’, using an entire line from Skepta’s ‘That’s Not Me’. On the new track, Drake raps “Shout out to the Gs from the ends, We don’t live no girls from the ends”, whilst ‘That’s Not Me’ famously features the line “Love for the Gs in the ends, But we don’t love no girls in the ends”. The line is clearly more of a homage to Skepta

Big Narstie speaks facts An ever-outspoken figure, Big Narstie dropped past Charlie Sloth’s 1Xtra show to deliver some words of wisdom. Discussing grime, the MC took aim at recent Fire In The Booth guest Chipmunk and at the BBC’s perceived failure to support ‘road’ artists – such as Big Narstie, presumably. “Tinie (Tempah) and Chip trying to beef on a hardcore grime level is like Boyz II Men and Dru Hill,” he joked, before adding that when the pop world was open to them, both artists were happy to pursue this route – but now this has been closed, they want back in with the original scene.

GAMES Hands of Fate PC | Xbox One | RPG

Hand of Fate is an action-RPG with Oregon Trail-style decision making and a deckbuilding game all rolled into one. Most of your time is spent sitting at a table as a cloaked dealer lays encounter cards face-down to make a board. You move a game piece from card to card, each of which trigger events and decisions, making you battle skeletons in real-time hack ‘n’ slash combat, gamble with demons, or decide between giving your supplies to the needy or hoarding it for yourself. Most are as simple as reading the encounter’s text and making a decision, and not every encounter will be good for you.

The Escapists PC | Action

As a mix of sandbox, puzzle and open-world action, The Escapists offers something fresh and entertaining. The nature of what it’s simulating leads to careful handwaves to keep things light, but with both enough space between those moments to feel like I was actually producing my own plan. It’s a clever game that’s not afraid to be challenging, and a very enjoyable puzzle if you don’t mind it also being a touch vague, often repetitive, and happy to quickly get as hard as figuring out an actual prison break.
