ABOUT THE SITE

DESIGN FEATURES IN THE BUILDING

The site has two buildings: the main office building and the second building with the extra activities. The main concept of this project is to create a area to withstand the hot humid climate of Guwahati.

The shapes of the building are designed as such to absorb most of the sunlight from south direction on the backside by solid walls so that the front facade can have complete glass curtains. The unusual curved shape helps us to block the direct sunlight from the south. By taking into account of the wind flow direction, we have created two different zones in the elevation of the site.

• THE FILTER FACADE / KINETIC FACADE

The two layers of fins that are connected to the building doesn’t only work as shading but also gives a changing look the building.

Titanium dioxide as a material coating Titanium dioxide (tio2) is a multifunctional coating used to provide anti-corrosive, antimicrobial, and bioactive properties to the surface. It automatically filters the polluted air without the need for expensive filtration devices.

GUWAHATI IS THE LARGEST CITY IN THE INDIAN STATE OF ASSAM AND ALSO THE LARGEST METROPOLIS IN NORTHEASTERN INDIA. A MAJOR RIVERINE PORT CITY ALONG WITH HILLS, AND ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING CITIES IN INDIA BELTOLA IS AN ADJOINING AREA OF THE DISPUR CAPITAL COMPLEX, THE CAPITAL OF ASSAM. THE AREA HAS SEEN RAPID GROWTH SINCE THE 1980S AND IS CONNECTED TO THE NATIONAL HIGWAY 27.

• THE HEAT CORE One is the cold air zone and the other hot air zone the cold air after getting collected and filtered by the hepa filter at the ground floor level is transferred towards the upper floors. Each floor has false ceilings and air ducts beneath them so the hot air will then enter through the ducts and flows the hot air zone of the heat core which eventually goes up to the top floor to the heat sink storage.

LAND SOIL AND VEGETATION GUWAHATI CITY IS LOCATED IN THE PLAINS. THE DOWNSTREAM OF BASHISTHA AND BAHINI-BHARALU RIVER BASINS CONSTITUTE A PART OF GUWAHATI CITY, MORE SPECIFICALLY, IT’S CENTRAL PART. THE PLAIN IS MADE UP OF ALLUVIAL SOIL. TREES AVAILABLE IN THE SITE AREA MAINLY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: BAMBOO, ARJUNA TREE, PEEPAL TREE, MANGO TREE, DEVADARU SOME HERBS ETC.

POST PANDEMIC APPROACH ▪ Furniture Design- Post Pandemic Perks: Each unit is designed and oriented in a manner that no two employees face each other directly. In addition to the ensured distancing, protective shield glass has also been provide with all the desks. A green buffer has been provided as barriers that help improve the air quality.

Small storage cabinets are provided between two chairs to enforce social distancing and it helps the employees to keep their belongings and water while they are in a meeting.

Separate entrance for vehicle and pedestrians to reduce the traffic,

The washrooms have touchless doors and uv disinfectants. The basin areas are lined with protective barriers to maintain social distancing protocols. Sanitizer dispensers have been provided in the washroom areas.

The work lounges have unconventional work spaces to divide the employees in small groups. Green plants have been introduced to create a natural ambience in the workplace and to furthermore improve the indoor air quality.

Separate sleeping pods are there to relax and to retain and empower the employees and to reduced sick days.

Each room has sanitizer boot and different work zone to divide the employees in small group to prevent physical distances

Library:

The library is on the roof terrace. It is equipped with touchless doors and sanitizer dispensers. The seating and furniture design is done in order to follow social distancing protocols. Designed to create visual comfort the 1mx1m cubicles are cozy reading cubicle system isolate and provide enough space to read while still giving enough of a window to step out and socialize from time to time from a distance. Green plants improve indoor air quality and provide a natural ambience to the space.

▪ Entrance: The building consists of 2 entrances. One through the parking and the other through the terrace which is elevated to the 1st floor level. The elevated terrace is for the pedestrian circulation throughout the site whereas the ground floor level is for vehicular traffic. All points of entrance and exit have sanitization tunnels installed which ensures sanitization of employees before entering and after leaving the building

▪ Touchless Doors In All Rooms: All the doors within the workplace are touchless to further lower the risk of germ spreading. Also for safety purposes hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed at all points of entrance to meeting rooms, conference rooms, and working lounges.

The building's atrium, which is connected by two stories, is located on the first floor. It also houses the department's healthcare unit, prayer room, and workplaces. The large foyer of this office welcomes employees to work in a nice setting. Similarly, the remaining floors contain various rooms for different tasks, despite the fact that the arrangement is the same.

SITE LOCATION & CONNECTIVITY Location of the site: Jalukbari City: Guwahati District: Kamrup metropolitan State: Assam Co-ordinates: 26°09'19.6"n 91°40'22.3"e

Guwahati is the largest city in the Indian state of Assam and also the largest metropolis in northeastern India. A major riverine port city along with hills, and one of the fastest growing cities in India.

Jalukbari acts as the main gateway to the major part of Guwahati as well as Assam which is connected via the national highway 27. It is the main center of the city where all communication, transportation and trading's are done.

CONNECTIVITY: VIA ROAD The isbt bus terminal is 11.4 km away from the site.

The adabari bus stand is 3km from the site.

Via nh27 from khanapara- 21 km Via nh27-nh15 from tezpur- 163 km Via nh27-nh5 from shillong- 105km VIA AIR The nearest airport is Lok Priya Gopinath bordoloi international airport at a distance of 15 km from site.

Taxi’s are available from there to the site.

VIA TRAIN The nearest train station is the paltanbazar railway station that is located at a distance of 11km from site.

The kamakhya junction is 6km from the site.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING The residential unit of this mixed Use development is made in such a Way that it defies the typical residential buildings in many ways.

Rather than not even knowing who’s living in your next door in this design we have tried to create a space where everyone sees everybody and connects.

This helps in breaking the monotony of the current apartments. The courtyard present in front of each apartment is the space that every house and family needs, like those of them that we see in our culture.

The blocks were then pushed pull to have a maximum amount of sunlight by exposing more walls.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING The commercial building comprises of 9th floor of an area about 1883 sq. M. The gf floor is an commercial floor having different commercial brands showroom for sale. It consists of two escalators connecting the 2nd & 3rd floor

CULTURAL CENTER The cultural center is home to many talented artists in various genres be it art music drama etc.

The artists can exhibit their works here and also can organize workshops for the locals. This way they don’t only get a stage to showcase their talents but to also learn and improve in the cycle of life.

RECREATING A LOCAL MARKET CHOWK BAZAR: CRIES THAT HEAL

ABOUT THE SITE & HISTORY OF CHOWK BAZAR

MOTIVE THROUGH THE BAZAR

CONCEPT I WANTED TO PROVIDE A CENTRAL OR FOCAL POINT MULTI -USE COMPLEX FOR THE NEW CHOWK BAZAR. IT WILL BE AT THE CENTRE CONNECTING ALL THE ROADS TO ITSELF.

A CHILD DIES FROM THE EFFECTS OF HUNGER EVERY TEN SECONDS. 690 MILLION PEOPLE ARE STARVING, 2 BILLION SUFFER FROM MALNUTRITION, BUT THERE IS ENOUGH FOOD, KNOWLEDGE, AND RESOURCES FOR ALL.

SITE LOCATION: TEZPUR, NEAR MG ROAD AREA: 86.23 X 87.9 M2

EVERY YEAR, NEARLY ONE-THIRD OF THE FOOD PRODUCED IN THE WORLD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION IS LOST OR WASTED. 40% OF THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND 30% OF THE CEREALS PRODUCED ARE LOST DUE TO INADEQUATE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AND DO NOT REACH THE CONSUMER MARKETS. WHILE SIGNIFICANT LEVELS OF FOOD LOSSES OCCUR UPSTREAM, AT HARVEST, AND DURING POST-HARVEST HANDLING, A LOT OF FOOD IS LOST OR WASTED DURING THE DISTRIBUTION AND CONSUMPTION STAGES.

THE SITE IS ABOUT 1KM FROM THE RIVER BRAHMAPUTRA'S BANK. THE OLD CHOWK BAZAR WAS BURNED AS A RESULT OF A SHORT CIRCUIT PROBLEM. SITE IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDILE OF BUSY TOWN THE FIRE THAT BROKE OUT BURNT THE ENTIRE BAZAR PHYSICALLY BUT EMOTIONALLY IT SCORCHED THE HEART OF SHOP OWNERS WHOSE ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME WAS THEIR SHOPS. THE THOUGHT BEHIND NEW PROJECT OF RECREATING THE MARKET IS TO KEEPING ITS OLD CHARM AND ALSO RECREATE AS A NEW MARKET HAVING TOUCH OF YOUTH AND HOPE.

THROUGH MY DESIGN, I WISH TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF FOOD AND THE HARDWORK INVOLVED IN THE CULTIVATION OF SUCH FOOD PRODUCTS.

CENTRALISATION

OVAL AND ELLIPTIC FORMS BELONGED TO ARCHITECTURAL DICTIONARY OF FORMS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. THE BASIC SHAPE, EASY TO CONSTRUCT WAS OF COURSE A CIRCLE.

THE MAIN AIM OF THE PROPOSAL IS TO GIVE A HEART TO THE MARKET.IT WILL CENTRE AND FOCAL POINT OF THE MARKET SYMBOLISING UNITY AND HARMONY.THE ENTIRE MARKET WILL BE RADIATING OUTWARDS ALONG THE ROADS OF THE MARKET.

INTERSECTION OF TWO CIRCLES WAS THE FIRST AND THE MOST SIMPLE OF CONSTRUCTIONS ON THE PATH TO THE OVALS. IN THE ARCHITECTURE, IT WAS NECESSARY TO ADAPT RADII OR DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CENTRES OF THE CIRCLES ACCORDING TO THE RHYTHM OF THE VAULTS OR DISTANCE BETWEEN LOAD BEARING ELEMENTS. THE SYSTEM OF THE INTERSECTING CIRCLES (VESICA SHAPE ALSO) WAS CONTAINED IN RELATED SYMBOLS KNOWN AS THE SEED OF LIFE AND THE FLOWER OF LIFE, FIG. . THESE SYMBOLS WERE KNOWN TO ANCIENT EGYPT. IN THE SLAVIC REGIONS THIS SYMBOL WAS USED AS A SOLAR SIGN.

This open market concept is for temporary shops dedicated for the local people to sell local produces. the void on the middle complex can be perfectly used as open market for the local producers of Tezpur.

• GREEN ROOF GARDEN & ORGANIC FARMING Introducing of green roof garden will bring life and serenity to the market. It will be a green area where small size organic vegetables will be grown using its in house organic fertilizer. The roof will be open to the public giving an exhibition feel to the organic farming carried out there.

I created a sitting space in front of the chai tapdi, which holds a tree, and people can sit under the tree, which provides shadow.

I have designed some bamboo structure which will be in different places around the bazar which hold some vessels of food and water for stray hungry dogs, birds and other animals which usually does not get food and water.

THE CONCEPT The site location is Gurugram, Delhi(India), which is a most polluted city of India. So, the facade of this building is treated with Tio2 (Titanium dioxide) coated jali and Vertical gardening.

In this process of treatment, Tio2 coated jali can remove pollutants from the air by decomposing them into harmless compound and Vertical garden can remove the

level of air pollution and thus improve the air quality.

ABOUT THE SITE

•

SITE LOCATION: PATHORICHUK, MAJULI, ASSAM AREA: 100X 75 M2

The site is situated between a paddy field and many local trees. So I decided to turn this site into a jungle and placed different structures like admin, library, community gathering spaces, and so on, all of which are minimum requirements of a school. In between there is a 25m dia play ground for kids to play outdoor games. The requirements are as follows, according to the design brief-

THE MISHING COMMUNITY'S CULTURE INSPIRED ME. I WANTED TO CREATE A PRIMARY SCHOOL IN A JUNGLE FOR THE KIDS OF THE MISHING COMMUNITY. SINCE THE CHILDREN IN THIS COMMUNITY ARE FAMILIAR WITH NATURE LIKE THE RIVER, THE JUNGLE, AND SO ON. SO, I CREATED THE SCHOOL IN A JUNGLE TO RAISE AWARENESS AMONG KIDS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF JUNGLE, WHICH PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE ECOSYSTEM FOR LIVING HUMAN IN THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD.

The architectural style of the admin block is the same as the architectural style of the Mishing community's residential buildings.

Building materials are easily accessible near the construction site and cost effective , and the locals are aware of this sort of construction technique.

NATURE INSPIRED ME TO DESIGN OF THIS CLASSROOM. THERE IS MORE VENTILATION TO ALLOW FOR PASSING WINDS AND SUNSHINE. THE BUILDING'S FORM IS INSPIRED

BY A LEAF. THE HALF OF THE LEAF IS SEMI-CIRCULAR, WHICH I CHANGED TO A PARABOLA-SHAPED STRUCTURE. BECAUSE CHILDREN ENJOY CIRCLES AND I DEVELOPED A SEMI-CIRCLE CLASSROOM FOR THEM. I USED BAMBOO AS A BUILDING MATERIAL AND USED CONCRETE FOR FOUNDATION. BAMBOO IS AVAILABLE NEAR

BY THE SITE AND ONCE MAHATMA GANDHI SAID THAT THE BUILDING SHOULD BE CONSTRUCT WITH THE MATERIAL AVAILABLE IN THE 1KM RADIUS OF THE SITE.. SINCE IT IS A FLOOD PRONE AREA SO I HAVE TO MAKE STILT STRUCTURE LIKE RESIDENCE OF THE VILLAGE. AND I HAVE GIVEN MORE OPEN SPACES FOR PROPER VENTILATION AND NATURAL SUNLIGHT.

BAMBOO ROOF The roof the house is made of bamboo also since when tin roof was not invented .

During raining season they faced difficulties since the bamboo roof can‘t protect them from rain. After so many years local politicians provided them the tin roof.

At plinth level of the stilt house there three windows facing each other in parallel way for proper cross ventilation.

The wall is slightly tilted to bottom to take load of the upper part of the building.

The truss of the house is made of wood and it’s a simple truss. There are 5 wooden truss to hold the roof. The construction technique is also so simple that anyone of that village can construct.

BAMBOO SKELITON FRAME The frame of the house made of bamboo strips. Bamboo strips are hold by the wooden frame as seen. And they used clay and mortar upon these bamboo strips frames.

WOODEN FLOOR The flooring material of first floor is made of 25 mm thick wood. Wood planks are made of pine tree.

WOODEN JOISTS The joists of the house are 110 mm thick and there are 7 joists to hold the first floor of the house. The joists are at a distance of 1150mm.

The floor plan of the house which was 70 years old had a simple plan . The people of sangti village live in very simple way. The walls are made of stone masonry which are easily available near by the site in the bank of the river.

The brought these stones are cut the stones in sharp edge with hammer only. They use the ground floor for storage or shelter for domestic animals like cows, goats, chicken etc.

The wall of the house is 445 mm thick of stone masonry. Stone are connected with each other with mud only and the villagers made the house themselves with hand using only manual tools like hammer, sizzle etc.

The use of the floor is to keep their domestic animals. They used this floor as storage.

The architecture of the house is to simple. The first floor part is wooden framed structure and the ground floor is made of stone masonry. Also the riling is made of wood and they used wooden joinery for construction.

30 THE ROOF

The roof of the house is made of bamboo 70 years ago.

Hey faced difficulties during rain. They also did not know the use of plastics that time.

After so many years local government provide them tin roof to get rid of rain.

The skeleton of the wall is made of bamboo strip. They mixed mortar or clay with small gravels and applied on the bamboo strips. The bamboo strips are work as natural reinforcement bar.

THE WALL

The bamboo strips are hold between the wooden frame. There is a hole in the wooden frame to hold the bamboo strips.

The railings are made of pine wood which are locally available and used tongue and groove joinery for this construction.

The joinery they used to construct the railing is tongue and groove.

The people of Sangti village used stone masonry to construct the ground floor of their building since stones are easily available near by the bank of the river.

The ladder to go to first floor is made of pine tree. They made this type of ladder with the help of nail. It lasts more than 70 years. And 70 years ago every people of each generation use this type of ladder instead of staircase.

They used clay and small stone gravels as mortar to connect the stones and they cut the stones in sharp edges with the help of hammer. They used large stones in the bottom of the wall as a foundation.

Nut and bolt was used o hold the wooden column with the stone wall.
