STARTEN MET BUCKLE UP! Welkom in Buckle Up! We leggen graag uit hoe je met dit boek aan de slag gaat.

1

Je start met Once upon a time. Daarin maak je kennis met Sam en Dario en het thema van de unit.

In

kij

In Story time kom je meer te weten over Sam en Dario. In dat deel leer je vooral luisteren en lezen. Zo krijg je de nieuwe leerstof aangebracht.

five

In Time to practise oefen je de leerstof in op jouw niveau. Afhankelijk van je resultaat ga je die herhalen (Time to catch up) of verdiepen (Time to get ahead). Een handig kader helpt je daarbij.

BUCKLE UP!

Daarna is het aan jou: Your time!

In

STORY TIME 1 1

Learning about houses Listen to the conversation between Sam and Dario. a What is the conversation about? Highlight the correct statement. 1 Sam wants Dario to join her at the skate park. He can’t because he is moving into a new house. 2 Dario asks Sam to help him move to a new house.

Hi Dario! Are you up to something? Do you want to go to the skate park? Hi Sam! I’m sorry, but I can’t. We’re moving to our new house today. Right. I forgot! Tell me all about it! Well, what can I say. My mother is happy we left the terraced house in Brighton. This one is a smaller house, but it is semi-detached so we have garden on three sides. I know! That’s why I like our bungalow so much. She’s really happy with her new kitchen as well. She loves an open kitchen with white cupboards. Really? What about your dirty pots and pans? You will always have to wash up after dinner. Well, there’s a dishwasher, but I will not hear the television when my parents are cooking. Oh Dario. You will always be in your bedroom anyway. What will it look like? Well, it’s a small room, but I have some nice ideas for decorating it. And I don’t have to share it with my brother! He chose the smallest room, so Clara can put her toys in her room. How kind of him! Hey, I could help you with a mood board. You can put all your ideas on it before you go shopping. Do you know what you want? Great idea! I would like to get a loft bed. I can put a sofa under it. Then there will be some room to put a games console opposite the sofa. I don't know what colour I want. The walls are white now, but I really want a big sticker of a breakdance artist on the wall and a rug with a lot of colours between the bed and the television.

TEENAGER REVEALS HER FAMILY LIVES IN A 'VILLAGE' OF SEVEN TINY HOUSES

By Freya Drohan for DailyMail.com

PUBLISHED: 14:32 GMT, 29 NOVEMBER 2019 | UPDATED: 20:22 GMT, 29 NOVEMBER 2019 1 A teenager who lives in her own little house in a 'tiny village' occupied just by her

family is going viral with her home tour videos on TikTok.

kij

Lennox Brinks, 18, has over 355,000 followers on the platform who can't get enough of her family's unusual living situation.

Lennox told DailyMail.com: 'About five years ago, my mom decided that she wanted to leave Michigan so we searched for land down here in Kentucky. Here she decided, instead of getting a big house, that we should downsize 10 and try to live in a more environmentally sustainable way.' Lennox' parents Keli and Ryan approached a local shed manufacturing business called Wildcat Barns. It then took about a year and a half to get the sheds all set up before 15 the Brinks moved in. 'We bought the houses, and then my dad insulated them and painted them', Lennox explained. 'There are seven all together: the barn, my house, my brother's house, the pool house, the bathroom, my parents’ house and the office.'

'It’s funny because people always think that because I live in “my own house” that I don’t see my family as much, but it’s no different from a regular house. We hang out all the time outside and by the pool', she said. 'I don't know if more family and friends would ever move over to us. Probably not, although my mom would love that! Chairman Meow wiggled his furry bum, getting ready to pounce. Time seemed to stretch like a rubber band. Then it snapped. Charlie sprang into action. He skittered under his bed as fast as his eight legs could carry him. Chairman Meow leaped after him. Charlie ran as far and as fast as he could. Chairman Meow couldn’t quite reach Charlie, but began to swipe at him with his fat ginger paws. Charlie ducked and ran and jumped past the jabbing claws. He reached the corner of his room, under his bed, cowering among old lollipop sticks to wiggle your bum: met je and dusty Match Attax cards, a rotten apple core kont wiebelen and a dead snail that he’d kept as a pet until it had ready to pounce: klaar om te escaped and at least now he knew where it had springen ended up. to snap: breken The swinging, swiping claws were getting nearer. to skitter: snel bewegen to leap: springen Charlie had to think and think fast. to cower among: hurken And then he realized – he would have to spider his tussen way out of the situation. He put one spindly foot probably: waarschijnlijk against the wall. And then another. And another. an ability: een bekwaamheid And another. And anoto thud: ploffen Well, you get the idea. He placed all eight of his a vibration: een trilling feet on the wall. And then he began walking. Up the wall. Now this probably feels pretty normal to spiders, but Charlie did not feel it was in the least bit normal. Quite the opposite. In fact, as he climbed up the wall, Charlie would have been screaming at the top of his lungs, if spiders could scream (which as we already know they can’t). Spiders might not be able to scream, but they are able to see backwards, and this suddenly became a very useful, actual lifesaving ability. Because Charlie saw behind him that Chairman Meow had spotted him. He could feel the cat thudding across the floor towards him through the vibrations in his spider-feet.

Charlie ran faster. Chairman Meow pounced high, stretching to get Charlie. 35 He just missed. Charlie ran as fast as he could up to the top of the wall and on to the ceiling just above the wardrobe. He stood spider-still, upside down, utterly terrified, as Meow prowled menacingly below him. Now this is as bad as it gets, thought Charlie. It can’t get any worse. It definitely has to get better from here. 40 Charlie had still not learned his optimism/pessimism lesson. In two swift, lithe leaps, Chairman Meow sprang first on to the bed, and then on to the top of the wardrobe. Without warning, Charlie was trapped upside down in the top corner of his bedroom, looking down at his pet cat, who was now inches away from 45 eating him. Hi Dario! How are you? Hi Sam! I’m fine. What are you up to this weekend? We’re visiting my grandparents on Sunday. I love my grandmother’s Sunday roast. She’s a very good cook. But I don’t have any plans for tomorrow. That’s why I called you. Do you want to do something together? Sure, I have dance practice at 10 a.m. The lesson lasts until noon, so in the afternoon we can meet up. What do you want to do? That’s great! That gives me time in the morning to do the homework that Mister Reed gave us. Do you want to go to the cinema? There are some good movies that I would like to see. Wait! Homework!? Mister Reed!? What are you talking about? Oh Dario, don’t tell me that you didn’t write it in your diary. Mister Reed asked us to find a text or clip about a special hobby. We have to talk about it in class next week. Really? Thanks for telling me. Can’t we do something more active? We can go disco bowling? It can be fun with the music and the lights. I hate bowling. It’s so boring! Do you have another idea? What about football? I like playing football. Dario … that’s like you asking me to do ballet with you. Alright then. There’s a new escape room in town. You can choose between ‘Murder at the Pier’ and ‘Return of the Mad Scientist’. Does that sound good to you? An escape room about science? You know how much I love science! Shall we invite Ali and Grace to join us? That’s a great idea, Sam.

My parents installed a ramp for my brother in our garden. He gave me one of his old skateboards and that’s when I fell in love with it. INTERVIEWER: You were the youngest girl ever in the X Games and now you have already won two gold medals. How much do you practise? HEAVEN: Normally I practise about two hours a day. I love that I can use my creativity to come up with new tricks. INTERVIEWER: Is it difficult for you to combine your schoolwork with your skateboarding? HEAVEN: Most of the time I just go to school as everyone else. My friends and I like hanging out after school and talking about all kinds of things. It's not always easy to get my homework done. I hate doing my homework when I’m at an event. INTERVIEWER: What’s your favourite subject at school? HEAVEN: I like mathematics and PE. I dislike technology and history. INTERVIEWER: Is there anything else that you love, except skateboarding? HEAVEN: Absolutely! I love fashion. I really enjoy going shopping or drawing clothes. A famous skating brand even asked me to create my own clothing line. It will be in the shops soon. INTERVIEWER: That’s great! Is your brother jealous that you are better at skateboarding than him? HEAVEN: Not at all! We practise a lot together. My mum doesn’t like it that I’m away so much. She misses me every time I’m not home. INTERVIEWER: Thanks for your time. Good luck with your skateboarding and clothing line. HEAVEN: No problem. I will do my best.

First, look at the text. Then, follow the instructions on the next page to summarize the text.

How to convince your parents to let you try a sport? 1 You

really want to try out a new sport, but your parents are against the idea. You’re frustrated, and you would do anything to get your parents on board. Parents may think it’s too expensive, too dangerous, or that you wouldn’t have enough time for your schoolwork. To get your parents to come around, 5 you will need to show them how passionate you are about trying out the sport. You also will need to communicate calmly with your parents.

aa

1

Practise the sport around your house.

r

STEP 1: Showing an active interest

pl

If you have the equipment you need to practise, practise the sport on your own. Doing the sport on your own will show your parents how dedicated 10 you are. If you have no idea how to play the sport, watch videos meant for beginners. Watch the sport. Watch the sport on TV at your house. Watching the sport can make your parents more comfortable with the idea of you doing the sport. 15 Read about the sport. Read books or magazines about the sport you want to play. It will give you more information about the sport when the time comes to talk to your parents.

em

2

ke x

3

STEP 2: Making a plan

1

Find the best way to play the sport.

Before talking to your parents, make a plan of how best to play the sport. Whether it be a school team, or lessons at a local gym, find the best location to play the sport. You will want to have all this information ready when you talk to your parents. Figure out how much money it will cost. Some sports require a lot of expensive equipment. Find out how much 25 it would cost you to play the sport. If you have to buy equipment, look on second hand sites to see if you can buy something used. You can also ask friends who play the sport for hand-me-downs or advice. Figure out how to maintain your grades. Draw up a schedule for yourself about when you will be able to study and 30 do homework. This could make your parents worry less about letting you try a sport. 20

STEP 3: Talking to your parents

1

Tell your parents why you want to play the sport. Talk to your parents about why you want to play the sport. Make sure to 35 express that you’re interested in the sport itself, and let them know that it’s an interest you have been developing. Don’t say things like, ‘Well, all my friends are going to be on the team.’ Explain the positives. Talk to your parents about why playing the sport will benefit you. 40 You can use personal arguments or you could explain the benefits of team sports in building leadership skills and good physical health. Show your parents the plan. Tell your parents the best way you can participate in the sport, and give them any papers that you’ve picked up. Your parents will be impressed 45 and it will make giving their permission much easier.

I thought as you had ice cream last night,’ began mother, ‘and the night before that, and the night before that, and the night before that–’ ‘In fact, every night in living memory, o beauteous daughter of mine’, interrupted Father. ‘That tonight it might be a good idea to have some–’ Mother winced as she said it– ‘fruit.’ The little girl stared at them. ‘Fruit?’ Her eyes flickered with fury. ‘FRUIT?!’ First, her bottom lip began to quiver, then her top. ‘FRUIT?!!’ Then her face began to turn the colour of an angry beetroot. ‘FRUIT?!!!’ a tantrum: een woedeaanval to wince (v.t. winced): huiveren

Next, her hair began to stand on end. ‘FRUIT?!!!!’ 20 Then she took a deep breath and let out a scream … ‘WHHHAAA!’ … so terrible that: People’s spectacles cracked … Melons exploded … Birds fell out of the trees, stone dead … Plates flew off shelves and smashed on the ground … Buses skidded off the road … Garden sheds collapsed … Earwax melted and 25 splurged out of people’s ears … Cats’ fur fell out … Books caught fire … Cathedrals crumbled … ‘NOOO!’ her parents screamed as they plugged their ears with their fingers in a desperate attempt to block out the noise. ‘WHAAAAAAA! I HATE FRUIT!’ Tandy wailed. 30 ‘Please, darling daughter!’ pleaded Mother, shouting over the din. But there was no stopping the girl. ‘Just one little piece of fruit, my speck of stardust! Please try it! You might like it!’ implored Father. He handed her a grape from the bowl. There was calm for a moment as Tandy’s tantrum stopped, and she placed 35 the grape in her mouth. Mother and Father shared a tentative smile. It was to be in vain. The girl spat the grape back at her father. It hit him square on the nose. ‘OUCH!’ he cried. ‘WHHHHAAAAAAA! I HATE GRAPES!’ 40 ‘Well, if you don’t like grapes, how about a banana, my ray of sunshine?’ said Mother, hastily peeling one. She handed the fruit to her daughter. Once again, she put it in her mouth before firing it straight back at her mother. It hit her bang in the eye. ‘OW!’ shrieked Mother. 45 Tandy was quite the spitter. This week alone she’d spat back a pear, some pineapple chunks, a strawberry and a kumquat. Father hated the waste, so put it all in the compost heap at the end of the garden. ‘WHHHHHHAAAAAA! I HATE BANANAS!’ The house began shaking at the noise of Tandy’s tantrum. It was as if there 50 were an earthquake hitting. The cutlery on the table started rattling. The lemonade in the glasses began bubbling and frothing. Ketchup spurted out of the bottle, repainting the ceiling red. Pictures fell off the walls and smashed on the floor. The goldfish leaped out of its bowl, and landed on the carpet. It flapped around there for a few the din: de herrie 55 moments before Father placed it back in its bowl, where it in vain: tevergeefs to froth: opschuimen buried itself under some gravel. Soon snot was flying out of the girl’s nose like water from a hose. Mother and Father were soaked.

We still need to get some groceries: two bottles of milk, some fruit, a kilo of flour, a kilo of sugar and plasters! Dario That’s it? Sam Yes, at least on my mum’s list. I still want to go to the bookshop and we can go back for your shirt at the clothes shop. Dario Sure and let’s go to the electronics shop as well. Woman (39) almost forgets distracted daughter (7) at shopping centre

By Ed Smith

n The people who were at the Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighto yesterday might have seen the cute little girl looking at the aquarium without thinking too much about it. Just like her mother who continued 5 her shopping trip without noticing that her daughter wasn’t with her anymore. Luckily an attentive shop owner watched the girl until her 10 mother returned. ‘ ‘Our shopping trip started just like always. First we went to the baker’s to get a cake as a treat after school. Then we had to do some shopping at the supermarket and the clothes shop. There was an aquarium next to the clothes shop and that must have been 15 when Annie got distracted. After walking past the aquarium I went to the chemist’s and finally I stopped at distracted: afgeleid the newsagent’s. That’s where I discovered she wasn’t to continue (v.t. continued): with me anymore. At the same time I got a call from the vervolgen owner of the bookshop to tell me she had Annie with her. the owner: de eigenaar 20 I’m so grateful!’ a treat: een traktatie/beloning to discover (v.t. discovered): ontdekken c Answer the questions. 1

The train leaves in fifteen minutes! Come on, Dario! Don’t worry so much, Sam. We can always take the next train if we don’t make it, or we could take the bus or a bike … Sam It's not funny, Dario. We have to be in London on time if we want to make the most of our day and we still have to get a ticket at the ticket machine. Dario I wish we could skip that part, have you seen how much a single ticket to London costs? Sam That’s why we’re buying a return ticket. That’s cheaper than buying two single tickets. Let’s go to the pedestrian crossing with the traffic lights. That should be the safest and quickest way to cross the street. Dario We’re lucky! The lights just turned green. We’ll have plenty of time to buy our tickets and to get to the correct platform. Sam Do you even know which platform we have to be on? Dario That’s what I have got you for, Sam! We both know you’re the organised one. Sam There’s the ticket machine and on the screen next to it we can read which platform we have to be at for our destination. Just in case they changed it. The train to London will leave from platform three. Dario Control freak. See, they even announced it! We have to be on platform three. Just as we planned it! Let’s go. Sam

Dario Sam

It is not even summer and the temperature is already twenty-five degrees today! You would not believe that we’re in Great Britain. It should be rainy here this time of the year! We should go to the beach this afternoon. First our homework about the different nationalities in our class and then the beach, Dario. So, we already know that I’m British, you are Brazilian, Lee Ching’s father is from China … Did you know that Grace’s grandmother is Irish? Oh, really? We could put that in our presentation! Don’t forget that Ali is Turkish and do you remember where Layla comes from? I know it’s from an Arab country, but I can’t remember which one. I’ll text her and ask her. You know, Sam, I don’t know why you are always complaining about the British weather. I like the fact that it’s not always so hot here. I do like a cool wind from time to time. What’s the weather like in Brazil then? I always think of it as sunny, nice and warm … First of all, it’s not just warm in Brazil. It’s almost always hot. At least in the part where I come from. Even when it’s raining and everything is wet, it’s still about thirty degrees. That sounds like my dream holiday! Water sports in the morning and relaxing next to a pool with a good book in the afternoon. Maybe some sightseeing … What would your dream holiday be like? I have never seen snow before, so I would love to go skiing in France or Italy! I hope my parents want to go next year during the winter holiday, but my mum hates the cold. I understand her! But, to be honest, I would love to go snowboarding one day. But, enough about holidays. Where’s Winston from? He’s Congolese, I think. Oh, look, Layla texted me back. She’s from Morocco, so we can put that in our presentation as well. Great! You start looking for all the flags and I’ll use this globe to find the capital cities. This can’t take too long and then we go to the beach!

Best time to visit Brazil

Seasons and weather 1

Most of Brazil sits in the tropics, meaning it enjoys a warm climate rarely dropping below 20°C. The further south you travel the more diverse the climate can be. Generally speaking southern Brazil has two seasons: a dry season from March to RIO DE November, and a wet season from December SÃO PAULO JANEIRO to February. Temperatures can get especially cool from June to September, which is considered by many as Brazil’s ‘winter’. Rio de Janeiro enjoys hot and humid summers, while the winter months bring cool evening temperatures and warm balmy days. São Paulo experiences a similar weather pattern though, due to its high altitude, it can get chillier in the evenings.

In the northeast of Brazil the weather is warm yearround at a balmy 20-30°C with a pleasant ocean breeze coming off the coast. June to July is slightly wetter with cooling showers throughout the day. In the north, the Amazon is hot and humid throughout the year with temperatures going from the mid to high 30°C. June to December is considered the dry season when the climate is warm and sunny, while December to May is referred to as the wet season with afternoon heavy showers and higher humidity, though maintaining clear and sunny mornings and evenings. Center-west, in the Pantanal, the wet season lasts from December to March and brings with it incredibly hot temperatures reaching up to 40°C, whereas in the dry season from May to October the climate is much cooler.

0°C is the same as 32°F. If you want to know how warm the temperatures on the map are in Celsius you have to do Fahrenheit minus 32 and then divide it by 1,8. For example New Orleans: 62 – 32 = 30 > 30 : 1,8 = 16,67°C
