Our Most Dangerous Instinct 170 x 240 mm | ca. 328 pages ca. 110,000 words hardcover all rights available

Shines a light on the hidden mechanisms behind group behaviour and dares to challenge established ideas about teams

With sharp real-life examples and practical advice

For everyone who works with others, or who wonders why conflicts arise so often

Our Most Dangerous Instinct

The root of conflicts at work, in politics, and between nations

Collaboration sounds great. But in reality, we often make life difficult for one another. At work. At home. In politics. In (trade) wars. Why does this happen? Because we evolved into social animals with deeply ingrained coalition instincts. We choose sides, seek confirmation within a coalition of like-minded people, and turn away from "the other."

This book clearly explains how these instincts shape our behaviour. It shows why collaboration so often clashes, and what it takes to improve cooperation in countless contexts.

Based on scientific insights from behavioural biology, evolutionary psychology, and social psychology. Concise, critical, and crystal clear.

Patrick Vermeren is an HR professional who fully relies on science as his foundation. He began his career as a manager in various companies (consumer goods, banking, and the automotive sector). Since 1997, he has specialized in leadership, cognitive behavioural coaching, and facilitating group work.

Prof. Dr. Eveline Crone

A Day in the Life of Our Brain

Understand your brain and those of the people around you

Neuroscientist Eveline Crone remains in awe of the human brain: it is extraordinary, not only because of everything it can do (a staggering amount!) but also because every brain is truly unique. Your brain is shaped by all the experiences you encounter throughout your life. These connections are continually built, strengthened, or even dismantled depending on what you go through.

In this book, Eveline Crone offers a clear explanation of how your brain works and shapes who you are. She delves into the ingenious nature of the human brain and the opportunities it presents. We explore the brain across various stages of life, guided by the latest surprising insights. And we uncover the truth about its interactions with alcohol and drugs, healthy nutrition, hormones, multitasking, sleep, and exercise.

In short, by understanding your brain better, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself - and also of the people around you. Why do we humans do the things we do? What makes us feel the way we feel? And what else are we capable of, thanks to our ingenious brain? This book might just transform your perspective on your entire life and the world around you!

Prof. Dr. Eveline Crone is a Dutch professor of Developmental Neuroscience in Society at Erasmus University Rotterdam and also holds a position at Leiden University. Her research group focuses on the development of young people from birth to adulthood, with a special emphasis on adolescence. Eva Munnik is a freelance journalist for Dutch television networks and magazines. She contributed as a writer to this book.

After more than fifteen years of innovative research, Eveline Crone is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of brain development.

In 2017, she won the Spinoza Award, the most prestigious prize for scientists in the Netherlands, and in April 2025,

'This book is the crowning achievement of my work. I see it as the perfect way to make all the insights I’ve gathered in my research accessible to everyone. In this way, I want to use brain knowledge to bring people closer together and bridge (generational) gaps.'

The result of years of research by one of Europe's most renowned brain experts

Almost no science is as complex as neuroscience. Yet, we are all fascinated by it, at least when it is told in an engaging way. That’s why Crone, with her new book, chooses a unique narrative structure: throughout the chapters, the reader follows the life of a family and their surroundings over the course of 24 hours

This way, we are introduced to:

• Teenage son Jimmy, who wants to explore the world and push boundaries,

• Jimmy’s father Ashwin, who keeps his brain fit with bootcamp,

• Neighbor Maud, who just had a baby and is developing a mother's brain,

• Grandpa Kenneth, who feels his wise but sometimes forgetful senior brain evolving.

Eveline Crone added an even more exclusive recognition to this: As one of the youngest researchers, she joined the prestigious American National Academy of Sciences, alongside more than 200 Nobel Prize winners.

This way, the book provides an insider’s perspective on the brain at different stages of life, from the formation of the baby brain to the infamous teenage brain and the female brain during menopause. Additionally, we see various environmental factors influencing brain activity in real time - think of the learning brain, the sleeping brain, the bullied brain, the happy brain, the excited brain... This offers insight into why you are the way you are: how your brain evolves through all your experiences and, in turn, shapes your behaviour.

Dr.

Luc Swinnen

I'm Stressed Out, Doc!

If you understand how stress and burnout works, you can do something about it

Stress is everywhere. Every year, countless books are published, and you can’t open a newspaper without stumbling upon yet another new method to tackle stress. Yet the core is simple, says stress doctor Luc Swinnen, who has studied the subject for more than 30 years: stress is your body’s reaction to danger. A highly effective reaction, in fact, only nowadays we are constantly bombarded with countless stress triggers. The result? We’re under continuous stress. Our body shifts into overdrive until, eventually, the light goes out: burnout.

Luc Swinnen is clear: if you understand how stress works, you can actually do something about it. His solution for chronic stress and burnout is threefold: (1) reduce the number of stress triggers; (2) give your brain sufficient rest (and no, that doesn’t mean simply sleeping more) and (3) seek deep, meaningful connections with others.

Dr. Luc Swinnen is an internationally recognised expert in the field of stress and burnout. Like no other, he knows how to translate scientific insights for a broad public.

The Drive to Move

The remarkable science behind an active lifestyle

The human body is an athletic machine, built to move a lot. Huntergatherers did this for millions of years, but over the past century, we’ve become largely sedentary. This lack of physical activity is taking its toll, triggering a wave of chronic diseases.

Science has already shown this for cardiovascular diseases and type-2 diabetes. New studies reveal that the benefits of movement extend far beyond what we once thought - it is a powerful ally in the fight against chronic illnesses, as well as dementia and cancer. That is why health has become a major motivation to move.

Through inspiring stories and recent scientific insights, this book challenges you to examine your own lifestyle. You’ll learn how much movement is truly necessary, and where the limits lie - because too much isn’t healthy either. A book that motivates, provides nuance, and gets you moving.

Wim Derave is a professor of physiology at Ghent University. In his research and teaching, he is passionate about how muscles work and how they adapt to physical activity and training. The Best Is Yet to Come

The Best Is Yet to Come Learn to age well

When it comes to aging, we tend to focus more on the quantity of life than on its quality. But what if much of the hardship of growing older could be avoided simply by looking at aging differently and by dealing with it in a new way?

This book does not offer advice on how to live as long as possible, . Instead, it provides guidance for anyone struggling with the deeper questions of growing older. It explores three central themes: how to free yourself from prejudices about aging, how to cope with a changing body and mind, how we as a society approach caregiving, and how we can remain engaged and continue to contribute to one another. Along the way, it draws not only on scientific research, but above all on the author’s experience as a psychiatrist for the elderly.

A fresh and positive perspective on aging

Focus not on living as long as possible, but on aging as well as possible

A counterpoint to the traditional narrative of aging as a burden or cost

Through the author’s personal reflections, illuminating stories, and the latest scientific insights into the aging brain and body, this book offers a deeply personal and original perspective on how we can prepare for old age, even at a younger stage of life.

How to become stress-resistant with your breath

Breathing is something we usually do unconsciously. But, by breathing consciously and correctly, you can improve your focus, flow, and strength.

After years of study, he became an expert in breathwork and now coaches numerous companies, athletes, and other professionals. His guidance is brought to life with vivid stories from his own past.

Whether you want greater endurance as an athlete, sharper thinking as an entrepreneur, or simply a healthier life, the message is clear: take control of your breathing.

My Child Has ADHD

A complete guide for parents: from recognition and diagnosis to practical tips for home and school

An estimated 3 to 5% of all children in Europe have ADHD

Based on the most recent research

An essential guide for raising children with ADHD

When parents, teachers and caregivers notice that their children struggle with concentration, act impulsively, or need extra support, they search for answers but often don’t know where to start or are overwhelmed by a flood of complex or conflicting information. ADHD is frequently suggested as a diagnosis, but is that always accurate?

The typical image of a child with ADHD as someone who can’t sit still is long outdated. Yet ADHD is still too often seen as to a problem only, which can cause children to struggle, whereas understanding, the right knowledge, and practical tools can help children with ADHD thrive.

This book provides an in-depth understanding of ADHD, debunks common misconceptions, and offers guidance for a wide range of challenges, including insecurity, procrastination, and anger. It is also useful for parents who suspect their child has ADHD but do not have or do not want a formal diagnosis. Recognize emotional manipulation, break the cycle, and reclaim your confidence

Gaslighting is a subtle yet devastating form of emotional manipulation that undermines victims by twisting the truth and sowing doubt. These small comments gradually erode self-confidence, leading to self-doubt, emotional exhaustion, broken relationships, and even physical symptoms like insomnia and stress.

In this groundbreaking book, narcissism expert Alice Vlottes explores the mechanisms of gaslighting from both the manipulator’s and the victim’s perspective. She reveals how gaslighting shows up not only in romantic relationships but also in the workplace, within families, friendships, and even in the way we talk to ourselves. Packed with case studies, scientific insights, and concrete strategies, this book teaches you how to recognize gaslighting, protect yourself, and rebuild your confidence.

An essential guide for anyone ready to break free from manipulation and reclaim their life.

Written by two experienced sleep coaches with a strong scientific background in child development

Full of practical tips and tools to support your baby’s natural sleep development

Gentle Nights

A revolutionary book to support the natural sleep development of your baby and toddler

Is your baby not sleeping as the books say? Congratulations, your baby is completely normal!

There is nothing natural about a baby sleeping alone, in a different room, through the night. Does this mean you should just accept sleepless nights? Absolutely not. In fact, by letting go of unrealistic expectations and adapting to your child’s rhythm, you can create a healthy sleep environment that benefits both you and your baby.

In this groundbreaking book, sleep experts Hanne Wils and Anouk Van Nuffel debunk persistent myths about baby sleep. They provide countless tools to gently and supportively guide your child's natural sleep development. The result? Happy babies and well-rested parents!

Hanne Wils holds a master's degree in educational sciences. Anouk Van Nuffel is a bioengineer, former scientific researcher in medical sciences, and a lactation consultant. Both are holistic, baby-led sleep experts. They support families in their search for more and better sleep.

We expect so much from babies: for instance, that they sleep through the night quickly, even though that’s not the biological norm at all, but rather a socially imposed ideal. Such persistent misunderstandings make many parents feel very uncertain. Thankfully, this much-needed book finally shows what normal baby sleep really looks like.

A comprehensive book on how language reveals much more about us than we realize

Why do men use 'bigger' words when flirting? How do we adjust our behaviour to others? How does forensic linguistics help track down terrorists?

Exceptionally well-written and stylistically strong

What Language Reveals

A brief history from brain to civilization

Language is more than just sounds and letters - it reveals who we are and where we come from. It tells us much more about ourselves than we realize, constantly evolving while also shaping the society we live in.

This book explores the history of language and its deep connection to human development. How do language and culture reflect each other? What signals do we send about ourselves through the way we speak? Does language shape our thoughts? And how does the way we use language reveal our gender, age, biases, and beliefs?

Watch the author introduce his book:

Freek Van de Velde is a research professor at the Faculty of Arts at KU Leuven, where he teaches historical linguistics and language variation. In his research on the history of language, he combines classical philological methods with insights and techniques from various fields, including biostatistics, cultural evolution, and machine learning. He is a sought-after speaker and a frequent guest expert in the media.

Few professors manage to captivate both their academic peers and a wide audience with their insights.

Freek Van de Velde is the kind of person for whom you'd happily sit for hours in a dusty lecture hall to listen to.

TAKE A LOOK

This centuries-old masterpiece offers a unique glimpse of a country that continues to intrigue people today

The fine illustrations by Japanese artists give a wealth of information about ancient rituals, scenery, the art of war, court culture and much more

Nippon

Japan through the eyes of Philipp Franz von Siebold, 1832-1852

Japan was isolated almost completely from the West for more than two hundred years, from 1641 to 1854. One of the first Westerners to penetrate that barrier and reveal fundamental information about the country – and the Far East in general – was Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a doctor from Würzburg in Germany. From 1823 to 1829 he lived on the small island of Dejima, a Dutch trading post in Nagasaki that was then the only point of contact between Japan and the West.

Full of ambition, Siebold was sent from the Dutch East Indies to Japan with the task of gathering as much information as possible about the country, its geography, its people, religion, customs and traditional costumes. Working with Japanese artists including Kawahara Keiga and Hokusai, Siebold embarked on an unprecedented visual and scientific project, culminating in the book Nippon.

In this publication of Nippon, we give Siebold’s work a new lease of life that lets us understand the Japan he saw. This edition includes all the original prints, while newly written essays and commentaries introduce the present-day reader to Nippon's most striking stories and details.

How wonderful that this remarkable book is now receiving the recognition - and the admiring readers - it has always deserved.

– Annejet van der Zijl, bestselling author and biographer of Franz von Siebold

Kuniko is a book historian who has worked at Japan Museum Siebold Huis since 2012. Matthi is an art historian and authority on Japan. 50 Manuscripts from Medieval Europe

For centuries, we have studied the works of Cicero and Horace. We have drawn inspiration from the Book of Job and the world-famous Aratea, the astronomical treatise from around 816 which became one of the most important illuminated Carolingian manuscripts. Our knowledge of the world is built upon the writings of classical and medieval poets, philosophers, theologians, and jurists. But without the diligent monks and scribes of the Middle Ages, these texts would not have been preserved. The modern world would be unimaginable without this transmission of written knowledge.

Written Treasures introduces you to the fascinating world of medieval manuscripts. Fifty remarkable manuscripts have been selected from the treasure trove of Leiden University Library - stunning masterpieces as well as hastily recorded works on second-rate parchment.

Thirty-eight international experts explore their content, appearance, design, and journey through generations of readers and owners to the present day. With beautiful images and accessible texts, this book is essential for history and book enthusiasts alike. It is a celebration of cultural heritage and a tribute to the extraordinary transmission of written knowledge across the ages.

Irene O’Daly is a university lecturer at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society, specializing in book history, the history of science, and the reception of classical ideas and texts in the Middle Ages.

The Chronicles of Death

155 x 240 mm | ca. 320 pages ca. 57,000 words hardcover with dust jacket all rights available

Literary non-fiction that takes you to the most controversial stage of the 16th century: the scaffold

Witness an execution through the eyes of the executioner, his “patient,” and the crowd, while gaining insight into major events of the time, such as the Dutch Revolt and witch burnings

The Chronicles of Death

Rebellion and executions in the Low Countries

A gaunt, shackled prisoner steps onto the scaffold. The ruthless executioner stands ready, sword in hand. A frenzied crowd gathers, shouting for blood. This is how we often imagine executions in the early modern era.

But is that really how it was? Historian Isabel Casteels studied thousands of eyewitness accounts of executions and, for the first time, reveals what people truly thought. Contrary to popular belief, the public did not see an execution as entertainment, but as a solemn and meaningful event. The crowd watched with a critical eye, often feeling compassion for the condemned. Yet if the executioner, the prisoner, or even fellow spectators failed to meet expectations, chaos erupted – and the audience itself could turn into executioner.

The Chronicles of Death offers a unique perspective on the executions in the 16th century. What unfolded on the market squares of Antwerp, Amsterdam, and countless other towns in the Low Countries? And what do these events reveal about human nature and society at the time? Told through shifting perspectives – from judge to criminal to the corpse itself – this book casts an entirely new light on one of the darkest chapters of Western-European history.

Isabel Casteels studied history at the University of Amsterdam. For her PhD research at KU Leuven and Leiden University, she explored executions in the sixteenth-century Low Countries.
